College Football News, Rumor & Humor

I think we will just see more moving of the goalposts when it comes to kicking this season off.

Can’t say I blame Marcus Peters, given that he was kicked off the UW football team. You would think the Washington athletic department staff would have a clue.
True enough. I would think they’d at least have the courtesy to ask him for permission to use his likeness on their website. It sounds like they just did it and didn’t consider the consequences. Kind of stupid, really.

I know CU does similar stuff. I would hope we go through proper channels.

ACC throwing ND a massive bone. I am guessing this is in the hopes they eventually move over in full ACC membership.
Not really though, it was just scheduling 4 more games against the ACC and having them/sharing their money is huge for them. Really interested to see what the income is for the ACC this year.

Norte Dame is signed with NBC through 2025. Let's say this is a trail membership for the Fighting Irish.

I am guessing the ACC would not have agreed to that without ND coughing up that money. Plus, this gives them an even number for conference games.

Yup, just have to wonder how much it really helps since there are 14 teams to split it with. Good move nonetheless

Yes, I think this is a good deal for both sides. ND gets a full schedule now instead of being left scrambling for P5 opponents and the ACC gets to equally share the NBC money.

I don't know how much their NBC contract is but now they have to split that money 15 ways, whereas in years they get to keep the rest after the visiting team payouts

my understanding is that ND is giving up a lot of their NBC TV money to make this happen. agree the ACC wants ND as a full member and will bend over to make that happen though.

All I could find is notre dame making 15 million a year from nbc sports.

Yeah it's a private deal but educated guesses are it's around $15M. Stewart Mandel on The Audible podcast said it actually might be a bit of a wash or Notre Dame could even come out ahead if they get an even revenue split of the ACC TV money. Notre Dame's deal isn't actually that good when compared to what they would make in a conference.

Yeah, it seems like notre dame makes a killing on getting paid for their away games. They get 15 from nbc for their home games and then those ACC and OOC teams pay a lot to get them to play in their home stadium so it could be a bad year for them.

I have seen that $15M deal when doing Google searches so I am guessing that is correct. That means Norte Dame would command about $3M per away game just to get to about the same amount that CU is getting from the Pac-12 every year for media rights alone.

That explains why ND's days as an independent could be numbered. They must be making a killing with ticket sales at their home games to offset the smaller media rights deal from NBC. Given the timeline for media rights deals, I think Norte Dame has about a two or three years to decide whether they will join the ACC in football after that NBC deal runs out or is bought out.

If Norte Dame joins in football, I'm sure that will trigger a renegotiation with ESPN on their media rights deal that runs through 2036 unless there is a clause in that contract that triggers significant increases in the gold given to those schools.

If the ACC really smashes it with its football TV viewership this fall, that ACC-ND relationship in football could be made permanent.

just a note -- I've been following conference realignment topics for a while and the ACC/Notre Dame relationship specifically since 2012.

I still believe it's at least equally likely that Notre Dame ends up in a conference other than the ACC (most probably the B1G) as they do the ACC. Nobody who follows ACC conference news seriously is taking for granted that ND ends up as full members there.

The money is better in the B1G, there's more legacy with those schools (i.e. established rivalries), and these GoR contracts still have yet to be tested with a legal challenge in court.

I realize that this has limited interest, and it's not clear if this was intentional or not, but all of VT's road games in 2020 are now bus trips. this is something that (within the P5) practically only ACC and SEC schools can likely do. i need to look and see if other ACC schools achieved similar schedule results, and if the SEC does this when theirs comes out.

It definitely did not happen for BC, Pitt, and Syracuse.

yeah, those schools need to merge w/ the B1G for that to happen.

after looking, it appears this only worked out for VT. so I'm guessing it was just luck and not planned intent.

Norte Dame to the B1G does not look like it will happen before 2036 and it had more to do with where most of their alumni lived and where they were more visible (Catholic Church for instance) plus increased exposure down the Atlantic coast as opposed to the Big Ten. It's also where quite a few former Big East members that ND was with for many years went as well.

The Big Ten's upcoming media rights deals will be very telling. If they go deeper with Fox (who owns the BTN) and reduces ESPN's share (fat chance ESPN gives more to the Pac-12), ESPN can just go to the ACC and ND how much money they get and they like it, it's a done deal. If the money dries up for Norte Dame with those road games, they will have no choice but to join the ACC.

Given that the Big Ten canceled three ND games along with the Pac-12 which has some sort of special relationship with the Big Ten and the ACC comes to the rescue for ND, why would ND want to join the Big Ten after that happened when the Big Ten could have had a "plus one" game along with the Pac-12. Maybe Stanford just cut all of those sports because they know that ND money will no longer be coming to that school and USC is probably pissed at the Pac-12. ND was also mentioned with the Big 12 in the past and notice they haven't dropped their OOC games so far?

I think that ND to the Big Ten ship has sailed and isn't returning to shore.
