USC fires Clay Helton

Heard a discussion saying why Brian Kelly would consider leaving ND. He's limited on what players he can get into ND and while they've had some very good seasons when the schedule breaks right for them, they've struggled badly against elite competition under Kelly. So he's maxed out at ND and this season he will pass Rockne as their all-time winningest coach, even though his overall accomplishments pale in comparision to Rockne. At USC he could get any player in that he wanted and he could pretty much own the P12 South and legitimately compete for national titles.

The drawbacks I see is Kelly is an Eastern/Midwestern guy so would he want to move to southern California, and I just don't see Bohn making a move this bold. He absolutely needs to make a big, bold move but I don't think he will.

I don’t think they fire Helton two weeks in like this if they aren’t prepared to go big (and likely have a good handle on interest from at least a few candidates).

Makes sense.

May indicate that they have either settled on someone who is currently not working as a head coach (Del Rio i.e.) or who has an exit strategy from their current job (Urban). This would likely exclude guys like Kelly unless they are willing to go this entire season with an interim coach.

I think if it were someone currently not working, Stoops, Petersen, JDR, etc, that person would get signed and start ASAP, no?

But is says “for the remainder of the season”

FWIW I heard an interview with Buddy Martin who knows Urban very well and he feels certain that Urban will not leave Jacksonville after 1 season.

Geez, it seems like last time they did that (if I remember correctly - I could be wrong) they ended up with Helton.

And the time they did it before, they let the guy go and he ended up winning a natty at LSU.

With any other AD, I’d tend to agree with you. Remember this is the same guy who got played by a dude hiding behind a food cart.

Totally agree with Klatt here about making these coaches say no, although I wouldn't have Kelly on that list. USC needs to shoot big. Chances are that those first 5 would all say no but MAKE them say no.

Cristobal should probably be in the top group and having Hafley and McDaniels on there seems odd.

Josh McDaniels? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I don’t really get your point in this thread. I know it’s popular to **** on Bohn, but I still don’t really get your point about Klatt and I don’t understand this post. Bohn hired Luke Fickell at Cincinnati. Maybe the University of Colorado football job has a perception issue from outsiders that we don’t care to admit.

Typical Bohn move. If you are going to fire a coach after the first lost of the season then why not fire him last fall. They had a plan in place to evaluate Helton 4 times during the season to see if they should fire him - if that is the case just fire him.

I am sure all the assistants will spend as much time looking for jobs as they will USC football...they know a high profile coach will want to hire his own assistants.

someone suggested earlier that the timing of the firing could be a BMD, disgruntled over the Stanford game, going to Bohn and offering to pony up for Helton's buyout.

seems plausible.

He expected Helton to start 4-0 (probably 6-0) which was an entirely reasonable standard.
