#Fire Coach Dorrell

As a CU fan, this is enraging and depressing.

TBH though, if I was HCKD looking at that, I'd be making subtle changes too. Zero motivation to work hard, improve or innovate. I'd 100% be "coasting" for the rest of my contract, right into retirement.
Retired on the job.

Here is a link to his contract.

If the University terminates this Agreement on or before December 31, 2021, the University shall pay Dorrell fourteen million eight hundred thousand ($14,800,000) dollars minus compensation Dorrell already earned in Base Salary, Supplemental Salary, and Incentive Salary prior to the effective date of termination.

Does this mean $14.8 million minus what he’s already earned? So minus the ~$3.5 million from last year and this year? Please correct me if I’m reading this wrong.

I'd read it the same as you. The unqualified word "prior" seems pretty clear.

It would only be the salary from this year. The date based figures are adjusted annually to factor the changing base salary. So, if he starts a season and is fired within the season, his only offset is the already paid base salary.

Fisch $6.7M after one season? Ugh.
This is the one that sticks out to me- a program that was/is a complete rebuild job going after a guy who presumably didn't have many options other than staying as NEs QB coach, and his buyout was negotiated down to less than half of what Dorrell's is? just a complete misread by whoever failed to push back on KDs agent.

So because he’s already been paid $6.6m by 12/31 ($3.2m for 2020 and $3.4m for 2021), if he were to be fired on 1/1/22, CU would cut him a check for $11.4m, correct?

Taking this back on track a bit, as it really seems very unlikely that KD will be fired this year, replacing Chev and Rodrique with halfway competent coaches could potentially help next season. But I fear the damage is done and only a complete housecleaning is going to get the ship turned around at this point.

So then technically it's not a $14.8m buyout right now.

If it was going to be fully guaranteed no matter what, they should have structure it in a way where he receives like half or 60% over the first 2 years, so the remaining balance is smaller, with incentives and escalators tied to success and revenue for years 3, 4, and 5, so he still has the opportunity to make a decent amount during those years.

Then again, that would require a creative AD to structure a contract in that kind of manner

The only thing that makes sense is that it was intentional on his part so there would be no choice but to keep him for 3-4 years at minimum.

Bingo! This is exactly what I said in another thread. My contact in the AD tells me that he believes that last thing RG wants to do is hire another football coach, so he made it contractually impossible to do so.

I think my favorite part about all this (well not really favorite because it all sucks) is knowing how long you've despised RG because of his lack of attention to MBB, and now everyone is finally agreeing

There were other reasons too, that was just number one.

And I'm not right often, so I have to beat that dead horse as long as I can on the few occasions that I am.

So…not quite reachable as a Go Fund Me figure? I’m good for a couple/few c notes…especially if the possibility of an unused balance goes towards a home run HC candidate and a modern-minded staff (recruit HS, portal, and current roster like a MFer), and turn CU into a solid gold brand.

He makes $266K a month at the moment. The buyout number goes down by that amount until 1-January 2022. After that, he will make $283K a month. The buyout number goes down by that amount until 1-January 2023. After that, he will make $300K a month. The buyout number goes down by that amount until 1-January 2024. After that, he will make $333K a month. He will be owed that entire amount regardless of whether or not he’s fired.

This is why I think Dorrell is the coach at least through the 2023 season.

So RG has given up like we all speculated. At least we know he is gone in the next 5 years. Just gotta hope CU has a football program by then.

My point is, if CU wants to fire him after this season, he will be owed $11,666,000 not $14.8m, which is where some confusion lies.

He's definitely getting 2022, but the buyout number after that season is more reasonable at ~$8m ($7.8m remaining for years 4 and 5 + $283k for the month of December, 2022 - Assuming they fire him at the end of November/early December).

The school is not going to fire him after 2022 either. We do not have donors who will pay the buyout, unless it is attached to an AD change.

I would add replacing Langsdorf here too. Most OCs coach the QB position so he should be gone by default.

is there any chance KD gets his head out of his ass and hires a good offense staff? I have no idea but this O is so bad only a complete overhaul in system and coaches is gonna start the process to fix it.

Since we are stuck with KD my focus (if I care to follow this program anymore) will be on the O changes this off-season.

I wouldn't bet on it-but I guess the defense changes after last year give you a TINY bit of hope?

Langsdorf, Chev, and Nim Rod would show me KD is at least serious about revamping the offense and the issues that plague this offense. I expect maybe, possibly, one change though.

The major problems are with the O, KD has multiple stints as OC, so how much of the current problems are from what he created? If he has nothing to do with the O and it is all on Chev, great lets fire Chiv and find someone else. If KD has been heavily involved with the O, getting rid of Chiv will do nothing. Who is going to come in here after an historically bad season to be OC? Anyone with any skills are going to pass, knowing KD has one foot in the grave. Right now KD is an anchor that is going to sink the entire program. He can fire everyone, but I don't have any faith in his ability to hire anyone better.
