The soccer team (6-1-2) eases into conference play (at least quantity-wise) with one of only three one match weekends scheduled this season, as they host the undefeated ASU Sun Devils (4-0-2) this Friday afternoon at Prentup Field.

Don't know about the quality of their opponents, but ASU will probably be feeling confident both offensively and defensively after coming off two straight 5-0 victories last week over Grambling State and Toledo. (They probably will have less non-conference matches than most other if not all Buff opponents, as the Sun Devils have already had 3 (all home) matches cancelled, one in August due to persistant lightning, and two in early September (9/4 & 9/8) due to Covid-19 issues on their team at that time.)

The match looks to have video coverage scheduled on "Colorado Live Stream". (Link near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER — The 2022 Pac-12 soccer season gets underway for head coach Danny Sanchez and his Colorado Buffaloes when Arizona State comes to Prentup Field on Friday (4 p.m. MT).

The Buffs start the conference slate with a 6-1-2 record and have already matched last season's scoring output with 31 goals. Colorado starts the weekend ranked fourth in scoring offense with 3.44 goals per game, but knows that scoring chances will have to be earned in the remainder of the year.

"I think we've had some really good tests over the last few weeks," Sanchez explained. "Especially with BYU, Michigan, Michigan State and Denver. I think we faced four teams with qualities that we're going to see in the Pac-12. I think it prepared us well as we start Pac-12 play on Friday."

Arizona State comes to Boulder with an unbeaten record of 4-0-2. The Sun Devils missed two games early on this season due to COVID but recovered by outscoring their last two opponents 10-0. Nicole Douglas, the NCAA's leading scoring in 2021, already has nine goals in six games this season.

"Obviously [ASU] has the returning leading scorer in the country, Nicole Douglas," Sanchez added. "She's a challenge for everybody in our league. They are an experienced team with a lot of for and five-year starters. They will provide a big challenge for us with their experience and their quality of play. I think it will be a great opening match for both teams."

The Buffs look to counter ASU's experience with their depth. 20 of the team's 23 field players have more than 100 minutes played this, with younger players getting the chance to fill in for some of CU's veterans who have been out of the lineup at points this season.

"We've had some players out of the last few weeks and I think some other players have really stepped up and shown what they can do," Sanchez noted. "We feel really good about where we are at right now."

Early and often the CU offense has run through Shyra James. She has scored in all but one match this season and 12 of her last 13. Her 10 goals are second in the NCAA and her 21 points are already a career-high. Civana Kuhlmann is second on the team with six goals in her eight games. Fifth-year forward Kayleigh Webb has scored in back-to-back contests and has four goals on the season.

"I think we're in a good place," Sanchez stated. "We know our ultimate fate of how our season is going to be lies in these next 11 matches."

Friday's game will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc. Free Gold Rush t-shirts for Saturday's football games, will be handed out to students while supplies last.

Traffic Advisory: The intersection of 30th St. and Colorado Ave., is closed from Sept. 10-23. Prentup Field is now only accessible by turning onto Colorado Ave. from Foothills Parkway.

I accidentally posted all the match and 1st post-match updates in the wrong thread (see https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/ma...osting-du-saturday-9-17-22-1-00-pm-mt.151761/ fpr those pearls of banality.)

In short, heartbreaking loss, as the Buffs lost 2-3 on a long and controversial "goal" with ~3 seconds left that may or may not have crossed over the goal line. (The referees discussed the decision for minutes before calling it a goal.)

Highlights of the 2 Buff goals (by Edwards and Kuhlmann) -

Media after the loss. (I assume with the post-match red card, the Buffs may be without Jenny Beyer for a match or two?)

The camera is at the far end, so it's not 100% definitive, but after looking at the end of the below highlight video, it sure looks like the 3rd ASU "goal" was NOT a goal.

BOULDER — A controversial goal with three seconds to go in the match handed Arizona State a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes at Prentup Field on Friday.

All square at 2-2 in the final minute, ASU's Eva van Deursen sent a desperation shot toward the top left corner of the CU net. Colorado keeper Dani Hansen met the ball at the crossbar and batted it forward, seemingly keeping it from crossing the goal line. The officials ruled the shot a goal at the 89:57 mark and despite a lively protest from the CU bench, the crew ruled they were unable to review the call in question.

"We came out too slow," Sanchez noted. "We didn't play with any urgency until we were down 2-0. Then we played how we're capable of playing. We scored two great goals and we're pushing for the game-winner. That's where the game was lost. We just didn't play with enough urgency."

Colorado (6-2-2, 0-1-0) fought back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to even the game with 20 minutes to play. Juliauna Hayward and Civana Kuhlmann scored two minutes apart to get the Buffs back to even. Hansen made three saves, including a diving denial in the 83rd minute to keep the game tied.

Arizona State (5-0-2, 1-0-0) got on the board first with Alexia Delgado in the first half. van Deursen scored two in the second half for the Sun Devils.
...

CU's comeback got started in the 70th minute with Hayward weaving through the ASU defense and firing a rocket of a ball off the right post and into the net. Not two minutes later it was Kuhlmann racing down a serve from Phoenix Miranda and slotting a shot from the right side to tie the game at 2-2.

"We have a lot of fight in us," Kuhlmann said. "We can't ever count us out of the game even if it's in the second half and we're two goals down. It gives us confidence going forward. If we don't dig ourselves into those holes, we can go up 2-0 first before we even get into the situation of being down. I'm really proud of the mentality we showed today. It didn't go this way at Michigan State, and we had a much different response today. That's promising because every game is going to be had in the Pac-12."

van Deursen's second of the day closed the game in controversy.

"It's the worst kind of situation," Kuhlmann added. "You fight to get in the game, and I definitely felt like it could have gone the other way. We made a few mistakes to lead up to the [third] goal, but for it to be something out of our control to call the game is defeating at the moment. However, we were encouraged by our swing in the second half. The way we got back into it and these things [calls] tend to even out. So, one time it'll go our way."

Up Next
Colorado will hit the road next week, traveling to Washington State (Sept. 28) and Washington (Oct. 2).

Notes: The Buffs a now 5-7-2 all-time against ASU…Kuhlmann's goal was her seventh of the season…she missed the last game against Denver…Kuhlmann now has 18 points this season, the most since 22 at Stanford in 2017…Hayward's goal was her second of the season…CU was still without Jade Babcock-Chi (missing the last four games)...Jenny Beyer was issued a red card in the 90th minute amid the controversial goal.

By now everyone who is passionate about CU soccer has formed an opinion about the final “goal” of the game. Just as important is the way in which the Buffs played for most of the match, which as head coach Danny Sanchez stated was, without “urgency.” Until Juliauna Hayward’s brilliant goal in the 70th minute, the attack was dead in the water. It looked at that point like CU would be shut out. They were a step behind, not winning many second balls and not confident. In fact they were very close to going down three goals.

Arizona State 3 - CU 2.

The lack of urgency has been an issue this season, even in matches they’ve won easily. Now that conference play has arrived, playing on the front foot has to be the norm. Losing at home with thee Washington schools on the horizon leaves no margin for error in the quest for an NCAA tourney birth.

For the second game in row CU was without Jade Babcock-Chi and it looked as if Civana Kuhlmann wasn’t 100%. Also, Hannah Sharts was in the midfield to start as she was versus DU.

Too frequently in the first half the Buffs gave up possession by hitting the ball into the middle of the field rather than taking the easy option to an open player on the outside. Fortunately, none of these turnovers led to a goal for ASU. Rather it would be a set piece in the 30th minute that gave ASU their first goal. It appeared that Dani Hansen left too much space at the far post and when Alexia Delgado hit the ball Hanson didn’t even really move as she had no chance. At the other end, CU’s only shot on goal was weak and at the keeper.

ASU looked to have the game wrapped up when they scored their second goal in the 59th minute on a wonderful combination that got them 1 v 1 on the keeper for an easy finish. And it really looked like CU was dead in the water at that point, until the individual effort by Hayward who was playing up top with Kuhlmann on the bench. Juliauna loves to dribble at the defense and in this moment she was able to keep possession until she was just outside the box where she was able to launch a curling shot with her left foot. Her goal seemed to wake the Buffs and they were then on the front foot, for a few minutes. Kuhlmann came on after the goal and took a long feed from Phoenix Miranda and then hit a perfect ball at a hard angle to the far post. Two exceptional goals in quick succession had the Buffs back in the match. Unfortunately, Kuhlmann reinjured herself and didn’t come back in.

With the score tied and about 20 minutes left it looked like CU had the momentum as the ASU players looked demoralized. Unfortunately, CU didn’t take advantage as they reverted to a more passive role again. This set the stage for the disputed goal in the last few seconds of the match. The referee's assistant on the sideline appeared to make the call that the ball crossed the line. It was a real letdown for the CU who had figured they had earned a tie at that point. Needless to say, many players and coaches vigorously challenged the goal, none more so than Jenny Beyer who got a red card after the final whistle for her efforts.
