Socks, dryers, college football this week. What is the connection? Mismatches. Last weekend gave us multiple upsets, if that is going to happen again they will likely be big upsets because this week we have a lot of games between teams that don’t look to be evenly matched.

Wednesday night starts with what shouldn’t be possible but is. South Alabama (1-5) at (2-3) Troy. Two bad teams but South Alabama is so bad that this is our first expected blowout. If South Alabama stays this bad will they become a permanent part of the Nebraska rotation of creampuffs? Likely, they need teams they know they can pay to take a beating.

Thursday night we get to find out if UCLA (1-5) can continue to be as bad as they have been against surprisingly mediocre Stanford (3-3.) Bruins may redefine wasting talent.

Friday night gives us Northwestern (1-5) who despite losing gave us close games against Wisconsin and Nebraska. Lots of people would be surprised if they keep it close against (4) Ohio State. Buckeyes may cover the over on their own in this one.

Saturday should again be a day that the PAC12 is in the spotlight with 2 games matching top 25 teams. Outside the PAC the only top 25 match has (16) Michigan visiting (7) Pedo State. Will the thought of showering there be enough of a distraction to keep them from focusing on the game.

Harbaugh and his Wolverines got a rare win over a ranked team a couple weeks ago beating Iowa. They have the opportunity to take the pressure off or intensify the focus with Penn State this weekend followed by hosting (8) Notre Dame next week. Lose these and the pressure will be on Harbaugh going into their season ending game against Ohio State.

Most of the other top 25 teams have opponents who are at or below .500. An exception is (18) Baylor who has had a schedule easier than convincing their administration that the girl consented. They go to Stoolwater to play Oklahoma State (4-2) who has had a much tougher schedule and will likely give them their first loss of the season.

Another game that is lower profile but could be interesting has (19) SMU hosting better than expected Temple (5-1.)

Garbage game of the week could be an epic blowout. What is it like to be a Rutgers fan? Since opening the season with a win over UMass they have lost 5 straight by a combined score of 195-23, three of those games they were shut out. This wasn't exactly against a murderer's row either, included in the losses are Boston College, Maryland, and Indiana. This week they get to play (20) Minnesota who is 6-0 coming off a blowout win over Nebraska. Is Rutgers the new Kansas?

Fusker fans don’t have to worry about another embarrassing loss this week. They don’t play. They don’t realize that they are embarrassing even when they don’t play. Might be a good weekend for sisters and sheep to lay low.

In the PAC we have two of the biggest games in the country. (17) Arizona State has only lost to the Buffs this year. They will have to play their best game to keep it that way at (13) Utah.

The really big game though looks to decide the North and influence the weak hopes the PAC has for the playoffs. (12) Oregon travels to (25) Washington who was expected to be better but is still good enough to maybe derail the Dayglow Ducks.

Closer to home CSU gets another week to bask in the glow of their win against New Mexico as they get a bye. This week is Wyoming’s (4-2) turn to play the crumbling Lobo’s as New Mexico goes to Laramie.

In a game between 4-2 squads AFA should be better than Hawaii but somehow you can never count on an easy game when you travel to the islands.

Northern Colorado (1-6) hopes to surprise a much better Portland State (4-3) in Greeley.

Local small colleges the top teams continue to win. Mines remains undefeated at 6-0 and host Fort Lewis this weekend. Pueblo and Dixie State continue right behind at 5-1 each. Pueblo host Mesa and Dixie goes to Western.

Just when I think we can't look sillier as a league......we do something like put a top 25 game on the conference network.

When the evidence stands in equipoise, I think the stench of the entire Penn State administration probably tips the scale, even if it was in the past.

Disagree. If we want better distribution, we need to have more attractive games on the network.
 
It's not like they are the only University to err. CU produced the biggest hack in the history of the planet in Rick Reilly.

This is the problem I have with schools like Penn State, Michigan State, Baylor, Nebraska, etc.

I can understand limiting what they say in terms of accepting responsibility because that makes it easier for those who are suing them for damages. My problem comes when they insist on making complete and blanket denials, when they victim blame, when they deny the possibility that their actions could have been at least partly responsible for what happened, and worse when they refuse to make substantive changes to either the people who are in charge or in how the programs are overseen.

Because of their failure to even consider substantive changes they are allowing conditions that could and probably will allow for similar events to occur again. I would not be surprised to have another rape scandal come out at Baylor anytime. I could see Penn State or Michigan State shuffling the actions of an evil person under the rug again to protect the "image" and "reputation" of the cash cow they call the program.

If one of these schools actually stepped up and said "We aren't going to be responsible for this happening again" and took real steps to change their culture I would be much more willing to move on as well. Replace the administration who should have prevented it, put in a real system of checks and balances that makes it so individuals can't hide things and get away with it.

My takeaway from the Penn State pedophilia scandal was that the athletic department and administration valued the reputation of Joe Paterno and the football program over all else. You can change administrators, that doesn't mean you're changing a culture.

Complain all you want about Albino and the CU recruiting "scandal." I will take that every day and twice on Sundays over covering up the kind of **** that got covered up in State College. I'm looking at you, too, **** Baylor.

The scandal exposed some pretty disgusting attitudes of their fans too. For every fan that was legitimately horrified and wanted it investigated, their were about a half dozen who screamed nothing burger.

They changed the parts of the administration they were forced to by legal action. Much of the administration on the next levels down stayed.

The people they brought in to replace them were predominantly "Penn State" people, individuals who came out of the same culture. They fought every change that was recommended to make the athletic department accountable to upper administration and the academic end of the university.

You can say the same thing to an even greater extent for Baylor.

For now-no. Put as much content like Utah-ASU on ESPN and FOX. If we can get a deal when the contracts are up 23-24 that allows for that, I'd be all for having a game like this on the network.
 
I don't really see the California schools playing football much longer honestly. First the Ivies will drop it, then Stanford. Then others will follow suit....

We will see some changes happen but if you think the California schools or any other significant P5 programs are going to drop football for any reason short of being forced to by outside powers you are wrong.

The financial impact is to large, the public impact is even larger.

When CU was on national TV earlier this year against Nebraska there is no way the school could have purchased anything approaching the publicity received. It may not make sense but having a football program brings a school many more applicants. More significantly it keeps former students and others attached as donors.

If you don't believe it is important just watch as the big money donors jockey for influence at USC as the decision on a new AD is made. These are people who give tens of millions of dollars a year to non-athletic programs at the university and the football team matters to them.
