SPOKANE, Wash. – Colorado track and field competed in three meets Friday evening with two different meets in Spokane at the WSU Combined Events Open and Invitational and at the Mines Winter Classic in Golden.

Colorado took home a win and posted two marks on the top-10 lists as Nick Bianco entered the men's heptathlon record books ninth in CU history and Amanda Opp had a huge personal best in the weight throw to move into a tie for third with teammate Gya'ni Sami.

Bianco closed out the second day of the men's heptathlon with a win in the pole vault at 4.80 meters. He finished with 5,054 points, the ninth-most in CU history. He was joined by John Swabik who finished fifth with 4,787 points.

In the WSU Open women's weight throw, Amanda Opp tossed a three-foot personal best to place second in 17.65 meters (57-11). She moved from ninth in CU history to tied for third with Sami who finished fifth in the event in 16.40 meters (53-9.75). Both women along with Elena Opp competed again in the WSU Invitational portion with Amanda Opp finishing fifth with a toss of 17.49 meters (57-4.75) and Sami finishing ninth in finals with a mark of 16.72 meters (54-10.25).

Also competing twice was Kylee Harr in the women's high jump. Harr won the WSU Open high jump with a leap of 1.72 meters (5-7.75), then came back and jumped in a second competition to finish ninth with a clearance of 1.66 meters (5-5.25).

Competing in the Invitational high jump tomorrow is Noah Bouchard who placed third in the Open 60 hurdle finals today in 8.42 seconds. He ran 8.47 in the prelims which was the seventh-best mark in the first round. In addition, he jumped 6.63 meters (21-9) to finish sixth in the men's long jump. His hurdle mark was just two-hundredths of a second from tying the 10th-best mark in CU history.

The Buffs finish out competition tomorrow in both the WSU Invitational and the Mines Winter Classic.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will send the distance crew to the 2022 Husky Classic at the University of Washington, while the sprinters will head to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque this Friday and Saturday.

Around 20 distance athletes will compete in every distance 800-meters and above, while the sprints crew of around a dozen will compete in all of the sprints and the 60 hurdles.

This will be the first indoor distance showing for most of these athletes in their career for Colorado with the older athletes having not run indoors at sea level since the 2020 MPSF Championships. The men will compete in all four distance events while the women will have athletes in all of the events except the 800.

One of the keys to watch is Eduardo Herrera in the men's 3,000. Herrera is currently 23rd in the mile in the NCAA and 47th in the 5,000. He races with Shaw Powell and Jake Derouin while Kyla Christopher-Moody will be the lone women's representative in the race.

Most of the distance crew will race in the 5,000s Friday with Andrew Kent, Jace Aschbrenner, Charlie Sweeney, Alec Hornecker and Austin Vancil all scheduled for the men. India Johnson, Emily Covert, Gabrielle Orie and Kaitlyn Barthell are set to race for the women. Vancil, Aschbrenner, Sweeney, Vancil and Covert are all ranked in the top-50 in the NCAA in the 3,000 with Covert leading the way in 31st.

Saturday the distance crew switches to the 800 and mile with Ryan Lindrud and Jonathon Horton racing the 800 and Noah Hibbard, Caleb Niednagel, Rachel McArthur and Micaela Degenero in the mile.

This is the first of two meets for the distance squad on the Dempsey track with the inaugural Pac-12 Indoor Invitational set for two weeks later.

For the sprinters, it is a 400-packed weekend with nine athletes entered in the open 400. Tyler Williams is 45th in the NCAA in the men's 400 and will lead Aaron McCoy, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson, Kellen Monestime and Nick Nuhfer in the two laps around the banked track at the Albuquerque Convention Center. For the women, Abbey Glynn is on the outside looking in at 21st in the NCAA and will race with teammates Jaida Drame and Grace Jenkins.

All of the 200 races will compete Friday with Luc Andrada, Monestime, Nuhfer, Emma Pollak, Kaleah Ruff and Reese Renz scheduled. The only other races that day will be the unseeded 400s. On Saturday, things ramp up with Ruff and Andrada in the 60-meter dash while Renz hurdles. Both squads will also try for a fast 4x400-meter relay as both relay teams are ranked in the top-50 in the NCAA.

Both meets will be live streamed via paid subscriptions with the Don Kirby on FloTrack and the Husky Classic on Runnerspace.

In Seattle, sounds like some great performances by the distance crew, led by a couple results in the 5000M where senior Eduardo Herrera sets the all-time Buff record with what will surely be an NCAA qualifying mark, while sophomore Emily Covert enters the top 10 all the way up to the #4 fastest Buff all-time. (I would think her time should also put her in the NCAA Championships as it's #8 right now, but times have crazy fast this year, so who knows for sure.)

In New Mexico, new Buff sprinter Luc Andrada also continues to go up the Buff record book in his 1st month at CU.

"
SEATTLE – Colorado track and field's Eduardo Herrera completely destroyed the previous school record in the men's 3,000-meter run here Friday evening at the Husky Classic to highlight a day that included six marks in the CU Top-10 performers list.

Herrera, who set the school record in the 1,500-meter run last year and has the second-fastest mark outdoors in the 5,000, finished second behind Northern Arizona's Abdihamid Nur in what will go down as one of the fastest men's 3,000-meter races in NCAA history. Nur's winning mark of 7:40.66 is the third-fastest mark in NCAA history in all-conditions while Herrera's mark is fifth. Both marks will not count on the NCAA top-10 list because they were run on an oversized track, but the previous best oversized track mark was 7:43.08.

Herrera becomes the only CU man to hold two distance school records after surpassing CU Hall of Famer and Olympian Adam Goucher's 3,000 mark of 7:46.03 set in 1998. He is now ranked 17th in the world in the event this season and will be second in the NCAA following tonight.

In the longer race, Charlie Sweeney made history in the men's 5,000 with the second-fastest time in CU history of 13:37.75. Sweeney finished eighth in race that featured five men under the previous facility record, and his time is second only to Olympian Joe Klecker on the CU top-10 list. Sweeney surpassed Goucher's second-best time set in 1998.

Sweeney wasn't alone as Andrew Kent finished 10th in the race in 13:39.40, becoming the sixth-best performer in CU history. The two knocked a pair of CU Olympians out of the top-10, Morgan Pearson and assistant coach Billy Nelson. Sweeney's mark would've been good for 17th in the NCAA this season, but only one runner in the seven ahead of him had run the event this season.

Moving to the women's races, the 5,000 saw Emily Covert finish as the top collegiate athlete in 15:35.40, the fourth-best mark in CU history. Covert's mark is good for ninth in the NCAA this season. Her teammate India Johnson finished ninth in 15:50.10 to move to seventh in CU history. Both the women's 3,000 and 5,000 were won tonight by former CU athletes with Olympian Val Constien winning the 3,000 in 8:52.19 while Carrie Verdon won the 5,000 in 15:33.50.

The sprints crew also began action at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque with Luc Andrada improving three spots in the men's 200 top-10 list. He moved from a tie for 10th into a tie for seventh with a 12th-place finish in the seeded 200 event, finishing in a time of 21.42 seconds.

The Buffs continue action tomorrow in both meets with the bulk of competition coming from the sprinters at the Don Kirby. The distance runners will compete in the two shorter events, the 800 and mile.

SEATTLE – Colorado track and field put up a pair of top-10 marks in the women's mile here today at the Husky Classic to put a cap on a record setting weekend in Seattle and Albuquerque.

The women's mile featured three Buffs posting marks better than 10th in CU history, led by Madie Boreman finishing eighth overall in 4:34.66. Boreman won her heat and had teammate Rachel McArthur right behind her in ninth overall in 4:34.92. The two led the second-fastest heat of the afternoon, surpassing the eighth heat and were only surpassed by seven runners in the final heat. Micaela Degenero finished second in the sixth heat for a 17th-place overall in 4:40.37.

Boreman, who had the 10th-best mark at 4:41.41 from 2017, moves to fifth in CU history while McArthur enters the list in sixth. Degenero would've made the list but now sits in 11th after McArthur lowered the 10th-best spot to 4:40.35 by Sara Slattery. The list is one of the strongest in CU with two marks in the NCAA top-10 including the NCAA record, five national champions and three Olympians.

With the marks today, Boreman and McArthur will move to 10th and 12th in the NCAA this season, pending other meets around the country.

"The women in the mile were a pleasant surprise," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "They will be close enough to edge of qualifying that they will likely need to try again in two weeks. I think all three have a good chance for Birmingham."

On the men's side, freshman Caleb Niednagel made his way into the CU top-10 in the men's mile after finishing 19th in 4:02.63.

In Albuquerque, Grace Jenkins pushed into the CU top-10 in the women's 400 after finishing 10th in 55.59 seconds. Abbey Glynn was the highest finisher in the open 400s for CU, finishing fourth in 53.13 seconds. Aaron McCoy was the men's high finisher in eighth in 47.60, though all four CU men ran under 48 seconds.

The men in the open 400 came together and won the men's 4x400 at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in 3:08.98. Their mark improves their third-best relay mark in CU history. The men continually got faster leg-by-leg as Tyler Williams opened in 47.33, followed by Ian Gilmore with a 47.31 split and Garrett Nelson in 47.26. McCoy closed in a blistering 46.80 second anchor to get Colorado the win.

With the time, CU is now 23rd on the indoor qualifying list with eight duplicate teams ahead of them, making them the 15th-fastest school in the NCAA pending altitude conversion and other meet results.

The Buffaloes will compete in one final meet at the Air Force Collegiate Open next Friday before heading back to Seattle for the inaugural Pac-12 Indoor Invitational which will replace the MPSF Championships.

DENVER — The Sportswomen of Colorado will honor Sage Hurta and Abby Nichols this March for their outstanding 2021 performances while representing the University of Colorado.

Hurta earned her award as a member of the track and field team before turning professional in June. Nichols was selected for her performance as a member of the cross country team.

Sage Hurta, Track & Field
Hurta became the second woman in CU history to be named the Pac-12 Woman of the Year after she won the 2021 NCAA Mile National Champion and earned her second Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team honor. Hurta's three total Academic All-America honors tied her with six other Buffaloes to accomplish the achievement.

She finished her career with a national runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter as the NCAA Outdoor Championships, giving her seven total All-America finishes including becoming the second-ever four-time cross country All-American for CU women. Hurta turned pro following the NCAA Championships and raced in the 800-meter run at the 2020 USATF Olympic Trials.

Abby Nichols, Cross Country
Nichols led Colorado in four of its five varsity races, winning two of those. She won the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on October 15 and followed it up with a win at the Pac-12 Championship, becoming the second female Buff to win the prestigious title. With the conference win, she helped the Buffaloes win the team title as they defeated the runner-up, Utah, 24-52. Nichols placed third at regionals and was eighth at the NCAA Championships, earning her second consecutive All-America honor. Colorado finished fourth as a team.

During the season she was named the USTFCCCA Female Athlete of the Week (after winning the Pac-12 title) and she was honored by the Pac-12 as the Pac-12 Women's Athlete of the Year. She was also named to the Pac-12 First Team and was an all-region honoree.

BOULDER — Colorado track and field will send a small group of mostly jumpers and throwers to the Air Force Collegiate Open Friday for the final tune up before the inaugural Pac-12 Indoor Invitational.

The Buffs will compete in both throwing events, both horizontal jumps, the high jump and the two 60-meter events with a few in the sprint and a few in the hurdles.

Luc Andrada will join Aidan Christiansen and John Swabik in the 60 meter dash alongside Avery McMullen on the women's side. The only other running event will be the women's 60 hurdles with Elise Gillett, Jada Green and Allie Routledge.

The rest of the athletes will focus on the jumps and throws. A bunch of athletes will compete in the high jump including Nick Bianco, Noah Bouchard, Ryan Charles, Swabik, Gillett, Green, Kylee Harr and Routledge. For the horizontal jumps, Bianco, Bouchard, Christiansen, Jackson Meyer, Sarah Aanenson and McMullen will all compete in the long jump with Meyer doubling in the triple.

Moving to the throws, the combined event athletes Green and Gillett will compete in the shot put alongside Bella Braun, Obi Osafo-Mensah and Lauren Whyrick. Osafo-Mensah and Braun are the only throwers doubling back in the weight throw while Lars Atkinson, Clayton Castro, Tyler Sconce, Amanda Opp, Elena Opp, Jane Powers and Gya'ni Sami are all competing only in the weight.

Colorado currently has athletes in the top-20 in the Pac-12 rankings in every event except the women's 60, women's triple jump, women's pole vault and men's shot put. The Buffs have the top-ranked Pac-12 individual in the men's heptathlon, women's pentathlon, women's 5,000 and men's 3,000.

Currently the Buffaloes have five athletes in qualifying position for the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Eduardo Herrera and Avery McMullen have the third-best mark in the nation in the 3,000 and pentathlon, respectfully. Emily Covert is the other CU athlete that has all but secured her spot at the national championships with the eighth-best mark in the 5,000. Madie Boreman and Rachel McArthur are currently in a qualifying spot at 12th and 15th in the women's mile but both would like to better that position and secure their spot inside the top-10 where their marks will be safer following conference championship weekend.

USAFA, Colo. – The University of Colorado track and field program posted a top-five mark in CU history in each gender in the 60-meter dash and the weight throw here Friday afternoon at the Air Force Collegiate Open.

The CU women had an amazing day, winning five events including two from Avery McMullen. The sophomore raced the 60-meter dash for the first time this season, winning the race in 7.56 seconds. That mark is good for fifth in CU history. She also followed it up with a win in the long jump at 5.95 meters (19-6.25).

Another huge mark for the women came from Gya'ni Sami winning the women's weight throw with a toss of 18.80 meters (61-8.25). The nearly five-foot personal best moved her to second in CU history in the event. She was joined by a plethora of Buffs that placed second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth in the event.

The other wins for CU women came from Kylee Harr in the women's high jump (5.95m | 19-6.25) and Lauren Whyrick in the women's shot put (13.50m | 44-3.5).

On the men's side, Luc Andrada came up second in the 60-meter dash but moved to a tie in CU history for second in the event with a mark of 6.67 seconds. His improvement ties him with Jonathan Prather from 1999 and trails CU school record holder Joe Morris by a tenth of a second.

The other top mark on the day came from Tyler Sconce in the men's weight throw. Finishing second behind teammate Dominique Williams who competed unattached, Sconce threw a two-foot personal best with a mark of 19.40 meters (63-7.75). He moved up one spot in the record books to third overall and was less than two inches from moving into second.

The Buffaloes close out the indoor season next week at the inaugural Pac-12 Indoor Invitational with four CU athletes in position to compete at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships thus far.

Preview for this Friday's and Saturday's meet. (As noted in the article quoted below, although "Pac 12" is included in the title, this is not a team scoring meet, but is instead being billed as a last chance meet for those with aspirations of earning NCAA Championships qualifying mark(s). Action on Friday is scheduled to begin at noon PT (1:00 PM MT) on both the track and in the field, while on Saturday the 1st field event is scheduled for 10:00 AM PT (11:00 PM MT), with track action beginning 30 minutes after that.)

BOULDER – The Colorado track and field program will head to the inaugural Pac-12 Indoor Invitational in Seattle, Wash., Friday and Saturday for the final indoor meet before the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

The meet replaced the MPSF Championships and will not be scored or count as a conference championship, but instead will serve as a last chance qualifier for the Pac-12 schools.

Colorado enters the meet with four athletes leading the Pac-12 in their respected events with Eduardo Herrera in the men's 3,000, Emily Covert in the women's 5,000, Avery McMullen in the women's pentathlon and Nick Bianco in the men's heptathlon. Herrera, Covert and McMullen are in the top-eight in the NCAA rankings and will not compete in those events this weekend.
...

In the women's mile, Madie Boreman and Rachel McArthur are currently ranked 12th and 15th in the NCAA. Though both women are currently in qualifying position for NCAAs, both women are looking to drop some time to secure their spots. Ranked fourth and sixth in the Pac-12, respectfully, the CU women are among seven Pac-12 women ranked in the top-20 for the NCAA with two others ranked in the teens and looking to drop time. The 10th spot in the NCAA sits at 4:34.35, so Boreman, McArthur and Micaela Degenero will all be trying to break 4:34.

Other athletes racing with outside shots at making it to NCAAs include Abbey Glynn, Emma Pollak, Tyler Williams and Aaron McCoy in the open 400-meter run. Glynn is third in the Pac-12 and needs to drop half a second to make it to NCAAs with the final qualifying mark at 52.58. Luckily for her, two USC women sit in qualifying positions and can help pull her into the championships. The same goes for Williams who will need to drop a half of a second to 46.46 to have a chance at making it to nationals. All four will be a part of their respected 4x400-meter relays with shots at the championships. The women chase USC and Oregon who are ninth and 10th in the NCAA, respectfully, and will need to run 3:34.30 or better. The men have the USC men that are heading to NCAAs and the ASU men that are the last qualifying team currently at 3:05.99.

Nick Bianco is the top-ranked Pac-12 athlete in the men's heptathlon and will be competing alongside John Swabik who is ranked third. Jada Green is seventh in the pentathlon and needs 350 points to be in consideration for the NCAAs.

SEATTLE – The University of Colorado track and field program picked up a title from each gender here Friday in the first day of the 2022 Pac-12 Indoor Invitational.

The Buffs were led by Avery McMullen picking up the win in the women's long jump with a jump of 6.03 meters (19-9.5). McMullen had the lead going into finals and fouled the rest of her jumps in attempts to dial in a huge mark.

McMullen also advanced to the finals in the women's 60-meter hurdles by placing seventh in prelims in 8.39 seconds. She will compete in the hurdle finals and the high jump tomorrow.

The winner on the men's side was Andrew Kent in just his second-ever track event for Colorado. Kent won the men's 5,000-meter run in 13:43.08, winning decisively by a couple of seconds. His teammate Charlie Sweeney finished fourth in 13:54.40.

In the women's 5,000 race, India Johnson and Gabrielle Orie finished third and fourth, respectfully. Johnson crossed the line in 16:05.28 while Orie finished in 16:10.39.

Colorado picked up two more top-five finishes in the first day with Gya'ni Sami placing fifth in the women's weight throw with a toss of 18.23 meters (59-9.75) and Luc Andrada finishing fifth in the 200 in 21.78 seconds. Both athletes meet has concluded as Andrada finished one spot out of the finals in the 60-meter dash.

For the women sprints, freshman Emma Pollak finished seventh in the 200-meter dash in 24.55 seconds. She will look to bring that speed to tomorrow's women's 400 final and 4x400-meter relay.

SEATTLE – The Colorado track and field program finished up action here Saturday at the 2022 Pac-12 Indoor Invitational with a pair of titles in the mile races, including a school record from Eduardo Herrera.

Herrera captured his third CU school record in the men's mile, dominating the race in 3:57.16. He now owns more school records than any CU male with the outdoor 1,500-meter record, indoor 3,000 and the mile. Herrera's mark will be outside of the time needed to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championship, but his 3,000-meter mark should be good enough to get him in.

The men also had strong showings with Andrew Kent finishing fourth in 4:00.59 and Noah Hibbard finishing seventh in 4:01.69.

In the women's race, Madie Boreman led a trio of CU women across the line, finishing the mile in 4:33.59. She was joined by Micaela Degenero finishing second in 4:34.49 followed by Rachel McArthur in 4:35.45 in third. Boreman's mark should get her through to NCAAs, while Degenero is around 12th in the NCAA and McArthur is around 16th depending on meets around the nation.

Another CU woman with an extraordinary race was Abbey Glynn in the women's 400. Glynn finished second in the race, breaking the 53-second barrier in 52.69 seconds. She becomes just the second Buff ever under 53 seconds in school history. She was joined by Emma Pollak who finished seventh in 54.85 seconds.

Rounding out the distance events, Emily Covert finished fourth in the women's 3,000 in 9:04.20 while Austin Vancil finished seventh in the men's race in 7:55.54. Ryan Lindrud also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 800 in a time of 1:51.82.

Colorado had a pair of individuals in the finals of the hurdles with Avery McMullen finishing sixth in the women's race in 8.41 and Noah Bouchard finishing sixth in 8.47 in the men's race. Both also were in the high jump with McMullen finishing eighth on misses while Bouchard finished fourth with a clearance of 2.08 meters (6-9.75).

In the women's high jump, McMullen, Kylee Harr and Allie Routledge all cleared 1.70 meters (5-7). Harr and Routledge went into a four-way tie for fourth, while McMullen finished eighth based on misses.

The final events of the day were the 4x400-meter relays. Tyler Williams and Aaron McCoy, fresh off finishing sixth and seventh in the open race, helped lead the CU men to fourth overall in 3:10.83. Glynn and Pollak helped the CU women finish fifth in 3:40.24.

Colorado will likely send five to six individuals to the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala., in two weeks with the two or three women in the mile, Herrera in the 3,000, Covert in the 5,000 and McMullen in the pentathlon. The rest of the team will turn their attention outdoors for the opening meet at home Mar. 18th and 19th.
