As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout the regular season, as the 1st meet (or possibly meets?***) are scheduled for later this week. It will also be used for any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals.
(I will set up a separate thread for the NCAA Championships (scheduled for 3/11-12/2022). Typically, I also do a separate thread for conference (in this sport MPSF) championships, but looks like there's none scheduled this season. There IS a Pac 12 Invitational before the NCAA's; if it seems like Coach Wetmore and the rest of the team seem to be emphasizing it, I may also set up a separate thread for it.)

The team starts action this Friday at the Air Force Academy, followed by a trip to Laramie next Friday. There are 2 home meets scheduled (at the IPF), with the Potts Invitational 1/14-15, and the Colorado Invitational 1/28-29.
(***There is also a BIG meet for distance runners this Saturday (12/4) at Boston U., where it's traditional for many top NCAA title contenders (although I can't remember any Buffs running there before) to use their peak shape from the recently completed cross country championships to earn NCAA T & F Championships qualifying times in the longer races (5000M and 3000M) at the VERY fast BU track before they take their typical post XC Championship season break and then begin again with a new training cycle for the NCAA's. I saw a post by a couple random posters on Letsrun that indicate, at minimum, CU's Eduardo Herrera may (???) be running the 5000M this year at that meet, but there are no official entry lists to confirm this.)

Full Schedule:
(Note- as I often like to point out, my recollection is that track and field is much more likely to add or subtract meets from their schedule than other sports, even after the season begins.)

Mainly copying from a prior year's thread, an explanation of how qualifying for the NCAA Championships works for the indoor track and field season:

Unlike outdoors, there are no regional championships run to choose who advances. It's merely-
  • Individually, it's just the athletes who earn the top 16 times or marks during the qualifying period who accept the invitation to go to the championships for that event.
  • For relays, it's the teams with the top 12 times who accept a bid.
  • Note that there are adjustments made for (1) altitude and (2) facility rating. (An Altitude conversion app and facility conversion factor document can be found in the next link below.)
  • Full explanation of qualifying is at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1ITF .
To keep up with how individual Buffs are placed to qualify, I believe the official resource for times are-
(For awhile, the last "normal" season's (2019/20) results are probably more indicative of potential qualifying marks. Links to last season's results are:
Just for reference purposes, here are the results from the last conference championships (held late Feb., 2020), and last season's (held March 2021) NCAA championships:

BOULDER – Colorado track and field will kick off the 2021-22 indoor season this weekend at a pair of meets at Air Force and Boston University this Friday and Saturday, respectfully.

A majority of the track squad will compete at the Air Force Holiday Open this Friday with 23 student-athletes entered in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws. The one exception is Eduardo Herrera, who is breaking the normal CU mold and heading to the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener to compete in an elite 5,000 with a number of the top-tier distance runners coming together to chase a fast time to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and more before the winter break.
...

This Friday will officially kick off the start of the season with the throws and combined-events and jumps teams competing at Air Force. The men will send 10 athletes with four different athletes competing in the long jump, weight throw and high jump. The women are sending 13 athletes with six competing in the weight throw, five in the long jump and four in the 60-meter hurdles.

Six athletes will make their CU debut. For the men, Isaiah Bouchard will compete in the weight throw, Noah Bouchard will compete in the high and long jump, Aidan Christiansen will compete in the 60-meter dash and long jump, Jackson Meyer will compete in the high and long jump and John Swabik will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump. On the women's side, Amanda Opp is the lone freshman to debut in the weight throw.

The men are mostly focused on the weight throw, long jump and high jump. The throwers in the weight are Lars Atkinson, Bouchard, Clayton Castro and Tyler Sconce. Bouchard, Ryan Charles, Meyer and Swabik are in the high jump while the same except Charles will compete in the long jump with Christiansen competing there instead.

The women are focused on the weight, long jump and hurdles. Heptathletes Elise Gillett, Jada Green, Kara Lucyk and Avery McMullen are all hurdling with each either in the high jump or long jump. Sarah Aanenson, Gillett, Green, Lucyk, and Allie Routledge are all long jumping. The throws crew consists of Bella Braun, Opp, her cousin Elena Opp, Jane Powers, Gya'ni Sami and Lauren Whyrick.

Saturday's race will be live-streamed on FloTrack while Friday's events can be followed here.

USAFA, Colo. – The Colorado women's track and field program etched five new marks in the top-10 record books in program history here Friday afternoon at the Air Force Holiday Open.

Sophomore Avery McMullen picked up a pair of wins in the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles today. Her winning jump of 1.75 meters (5-8.75) puts her tied for ninth in CU history in the event indoors. The mark was a five-centimeter improvement off her best mark of last season and three centimeters better than her previous indoor best. She also won the women's hurdle race, tying her time of 8.55 that she ran in the prelims of the Championships at the Peak last year for eighth in school history.

Joining McMullen in the hurdles was Jada Green in second who ran 8.65, good for 10th in CU history. Reese Renze also broke the nine-second barrier for the Buffs at 8.99, good for eighth.

Moving to the throws, Gya'ni Sami jumped a spot up the record books to third in the women's weight throw with a toss of 17.65 meters (57-11). That mark was good for second overall. Freshman Amanda Opp took just two throws in her CU career to move into the record books, launching the weight 16.57 meters (54-4.5) to take over the ninth spot in the CU record books. Her mark was good enough for fifth in the event.

The CU men also had strong showings, most notably Noah Bouchard in the men's high jump. Bouchard finished second in the event, clearing 2.05 meters (6-8.75) to finish behind Air Force's Collin Schulz. CU freshman Aidan Christiansen also had a top-three finish for the Buffs in the men's long jump, leaping 6.87 meters (22-6.5) to finish third overall.

Colorado returns to action tomorrow when Eduardo Herrera races in the BU Season Opener Elite 5,000. Herrera is second in the record books in the outdoor 5,000 but has never run an indoor 5K for the Buffs. His outdoor mark is nearly 10 seconds faster than the current school record, held by Olympian Joe Klecker.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field will separate to a pair of meets this weekend at the Wyoming Power Meet and at the UCCS Colorado Running Company Pre-Holiday Open/Multi this Friday and Saturday.

The throws crew will head to Wyoming to compete Friday while the combined event women will compete in the pentathlon Friday at UCCS. The rest of the jumps crew will compete Friday at UCCS while John Swabik will be the lone Buff competing on Saturday in UCCS in the men's heptathlon.

The Buffaloes had a strong opening meet last week at Air Force where the women put five new marks in the CU Top-10 lists. Avery McMullen is coming off of tying a mark in the hurdles and adding herself to the indoor high jump list. She will lead four Buffs in the women's pentathlon Friday at UCCS, an event that she is fifth in CU history and on the verge of breaking the 4,000-point barrier. She will be joined by Jada Green, Kara Lucyk and Elise Gillett.

The men's squad at UCCS will feature Ryan Charles in the high jump, Nick Bianco in the pole vault and Aidan Christiansen, Noah Bouchard and Jackson Meyer in the long jump. Swabik will compete in his first heptathlon for the Buffs as the only Buff competing Saturday at UCCS.

The throws crew will head north to Wyoming to compete in the Power Invite. There are three women entered in the shot, Lauren Whyrick, Elena Opp and Obi Osafo-Mensah. All three are also entered in the weight throw along with Gya'ni Sami, Amanda Opp, Jane Powers and Bella Braun.

For the men, Lars Atkinson is the lone Buffalo competing in both the shot and weigh throw, while Tyler Sconce, Clayton Castro and Isaiah Bouchard will all compete in just the weight throw.

This will be the final weekend of competition in a long 2021 season that featured two cross country seasons, an Olympics season and an outdoor season. Colorado will return to action next year at the Potts Invitational January 14-15 in Boulder.

Article after yesterday's action, which looks to be highlighted by a great start to the season for junior Avery McMullen, who betters her previous best in the pentathlon by quite a bit (122 points) in her 1st competition of the season. This moves her up to 4th (or 2nd since an event change to the event) all-time in the Buff record books, and shows she's very capable of an NCAA Championships qualifying performance (and this one might be good enough???) when the later season big meets take place. A couple other multi-eventers also earned strong results that have to be a good sign towards them having their best seasons.

Unfortunately, looks like, due to weather, the throwers ended up not making up it up to Wyoming.

And, best wishes to the one Buff, multi-event freshman John Swabik, still in action today, as I assume he looks to consolidate or move up from his current 4th place in the heptathlon at the UC- Colorado Springs meet.

"
COLORADO SPRINGS – Colorado track and field sophomore Avery McMullen recorded the top women's pentathlon mark in the nation this season thus far here Friday at the UCCS Colorado Running Company Pre-Holiday Invite.

McMullen won four of the five events to take the win with 4,041 points, jumping her one spot up the CU top-10 list and pulling within 30 points of the school record held by Annette Tannander. She won the 60 hurdles in 8.58, just three-hundredths of a second from her personal best she hit last week. In the high jump, McMullen bettered her previous best by a centimeter at 1.76 meters (5-9.25) to move herself into a tie for eighth in CU history in the event. She destroyed her previous best in the indoor shot put with a toss of 11.88 meters (38-11.75) which was more than a meter improvement from her previous best in 2020. McMullen followed that up with her second-ever six-meter jump in the indoor long jump, hitting exactly the 6.00 meter mark (19-8.25). She closed the event running 2:36.83 in the 800.

Last year a 4,000-point mark would've been good enough to go to nationals. In the past five years it has taken on average 4060 points with three of those years between 4071 and 4082. The previous national-leading mark was held by Allison Gerads of Minnesota at 4,037 points.

Colorado also had Jada Green score 3,500 points for fourth and Elise Gillett finish eighth in 3,171 points.

Moving to the men's field events, Nick Bianco placed second in the pole vault and was the top collegiate athlete at 4.98 meters (16-4). His mark is good for fifth in school history and was more than a foot higher than his previous indoor best. His mark is the highest in CU history since 1995.

In the men's long jump, Aidan Christiansen placed 10th with a jump of 6.73 meters (22-1) while Jackson Meyer placed 17th in 6.43 meters (21-1.25)

John Swabik competed in the first day of the men's heptathlon, finishing the day out in fourth with 2,591 points.

The throwers were scheduled to compete at the Wyoming Power Meet but did not compete today due to weather.

"
BOULDER – Colorado track and field returns to the Indoor Practice Facility for home indoor competition for the first time since February of 2020 this weekend with the 2022 Potts Invitational.

All field events will compete on Friday beginning at noon, while all track events will be on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

Colorado will have 49 total student-athletes competing in 25 of 28 events. The only events CU won't be represented in are the men's 3,000-meter run, women's pole vault and women's triple jump.

The men's mile will be the marque running event with five total CU men racing. On the women's side, the most competed event is the women's weight throw with seven women entered. There will also be five women competing in the mile, 3,000 and 60 hurdles.

The Buffs competed in three meets in December, highlighted by Avery McMullen who sits second in the NCAA in the women's pentathlon. She is also ranked 11th in the high jump and 13th in the long jump and is the lone Buff early in the season in the top-16 in the NCAA. McMullen will be competing in the hurdles, high jump and 800-meter run.

For many this is not only the first meet of the season, but also the first time on a track for Colorado. There are 11 student-athletes making their debut for Colorado in a track event and eight more that are running indoors for the first time after the complicated 2021 indoor track and cross country schedule.

Friday's events are free to the public, while Saturday's event is $8 for everyone 12 or older. All events can be followed live at cubuffs.com/tracklive.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field concluded the first day of the 2022 Potts Invitational here Friday with a win in the men's high jump by freshman Noah Bouchard.

Bouchard added to his personal best with a final clearance over 2.06 meters (6-9) to take the only victory on the day for the Buffaloes. He was the only athlete to clear the mark, ending the competition against three other jumpers at that height. He made three attempts at 2.11 meters (6-11) but came up just short.

On the women's side, Avery McMullen tied her personal best in the high jump at 1.76 meters (5-9.25). She finished second based on jumps as both her and Jordan Lanning missed at 1.79m. She was joined by Kylee Harr who finished in the top-three with a jump of 1.71m (5-7.25) for third.

The women put two in the top-three in both the shot put and weight throw today, while the men added a third-place finish in the weight throw. Jane Powers got things going with a toss of 13.17 meters (43-2.5) in the shot put on her second throw in finals, good enough for third overall. Gya'ni Sami moved from seventh to second in her final throw of the finals in the women's weight throw with a mark of 17.29 meters (56-8.75), while Tyler Sconce finished third for the men in the event with a toss of 17.53m (57-6.25). Sconce was the top-finishing collegiate athlete, following behind CU school record holder Alex Kizirian in second and Dominique Williams who won the event as an unattached athlete that has expired his indoors eligibility. Williams' mark would've been good for second in CU history at 19.80 meters (64-11.5).

The venue switches over to the track tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m. with the men's mile. Tickets are $8/person 12 or older and results can be found live at cubuffs.com/tracklive.

BOULDER – The Colorado track and field sprints crew had an explosive start to its season here Saturday with three marks in the CU top-10 records.

The team took out marks in the men and women's 200-meter dash as well as adding one in the men's 60-meter dash. Sophomore Luc Andrada, a transfer from BYU without a single day of practice with the CU team, started things out finishing second in the men's 60-meter dash in 6.78. His mark ties him with 10th in the CU top-10 lists with Ben Kelly and is only the second entry in the 60-meter dash in the past eight seasons.

Moving to the 200s, true freshman Emma Pollak had a stellar debut to her CU career by placing second in 24.06 seconds. In her first collegiate race she surpassed eight former athletes to move to third all-time, trailing only the top two sprinters in CU history Amaris Buchanan and Ana Holland who sit 1-2 in both the 60-meter dash and 200 indoors. Pollak's time was fast enough to rank her seventh on the CU outdoor list.

Senior Aaron McCoy followed suit by winning the men's 200-meter dash in the second-to-last heat in 21.33 seconds from the inside lane. His time is good for fifth in CU history behind former teammate Duane McClurkin Jr. and was a personal best by nearly half a second.

The crew also took the title in the women's 400 from walk-on true freshman Grace Jenkins in her collegiate debut. She won the event in 56.38 seconds, just six-hundredths of a second from becoming the 10th-best performer in CU history in the event.

Colorado heads to Air Force next weekend for the Air Force Invitational Thursday through Saturday before returning home for the Colorado Invitational Jan. 28-29.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Wetmore

I think what jumps out immediately are performances by some of the freshmen. Grace looked good winning the 400, Emma looked very good winning her heat of the 200 in what I think is very close to our school record, within a couple of tenths of our school record in her first outing. Remember they all came back Monday after four or five weeks away from us. I was impressed with McCoy winning the 200 from not the fastest section, but also how aggressively he ran a 4x4 when there wasn't a lot on the line today. He ran hard, he ran low 47s just because he wants to be good and he knows good guys run hard so I was proud of him. Maybe a little bit lost in the results is our new guy Luc. Luc got cleared yesterday and said I'll run the 4x4 which is not his event, he is a short sprinter and did a good job and helped us to win the race. So real proud to have him on board. Aaron was great. Those two young women are great. There were some good freshmen or redshirt freshmen in the men's mile. Of course, Noah won yesterday, another freshman so a lot of new young people that can help us in the future and we're glad to be back here at work with four or five months of good hard work to go before the meets get really important.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field continues action at the Air Force Invitational starting Thursday with the pentathlon and continuing through Saturday.

The Buffaloes are coming off a strong indoor opening at the Potts Invitational where the sprints crew put three marks in the top-10. Both Aaron McCoy and Emma Pollak are top-35 in the nation in the 200-meter dash and the men's 4x400-meter relay is ranked 46th early. Both McCoy and Pollak are taking this weekend off.

Leading Colorado in rankings is Avery McMullen who is second in the NCAA in the pentathlon, 18th in the high jump and 31st in the long jump. Jada Green is also 18th in the nation in the pentathlon and will be competing in the pentathlon Thursday along with Elise Gillett who is ranked 39th in the nation.

A surprise in his first day eligible was transfer Luc Andrada who tied the 10th-best mark in CU history in the 60-meter dash without a day of practice. He will be competing in the 60 and 200 along with Kaleah Mitchell-Ruff. Aidan Christiansen will also be in the 60 while Nick Nuhfer will be in the 200.

McMullen is taking this pentathlon off but will compete in the 60-meter hurdles along with Reese Renz, Nick Bianco and John Swabik. McMullen will also compete in the high jump and long jump along with a large set of Buffs competing in those events with five in the high jump and seven in the long jump.

In the throws, four athletes will compete in the shot put, while 10 will compete in the weight throw.

Green and Gillett will be the first athletes on the track Thursday in the pentathlon. Friday the hurdles and sprints will run through the first round of all the races while the weight throws, long jumps and men's high jump will all compete Friday. Saturday will run the finals of the sprints and hurdles alongside the shot puts, men's pole vault and women's high jump.

Colorado returns home next weekend for the Colorado Invitational with field events set for Friday and the track events Saturday.

NEW ORLEANS — The University of Colorado cross country team placed four individuals on the 2021 USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.

India Johnson and Abby Nichols were selected to the women's team, while Brendan Fraser and Alec Hornecker were named to the men's team.

Johnson is working towards a master's in creative technology and design and has a 3.85 GPA, while Nichols has a 3.38 GPA while majoring in organizational leadership.

Fraser, another organizational leadership major, has recorded a 4.00 GPA. Hornecker is finishing up his master's in finance and currently owns a 3.30 GPA.

Both the women and men's teams earned the academic team honor. The women recorded a 3.540 cumulative GPA in the fall, marking the 35th consecutive semester over a 3.0 and the 18th straight semester over a 3.2. The men's team recorded a 3.216 cumulative GPA after earning their highest fall term GPA (3.354).

There were 168 women's programs and 150 men's programs which qualified for the team honor in the NCAA Division I. To earn the award, a team must have a cumulative GPA greater than 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. Individual honorees must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater and must have finished as an All-American (top 40) or among the 25 finishers (or 10 percent) in their regional meet.

Today's racing has begun-

Edit - Looks like a VERY solid time for Eduardo Herrera, with his 4:03.53 converting to 3:57.52 (If I entered everything correctly in the NCAA Altitude converter). Looks like that time would have been #11 back in 2019/20 (the last more "normal" regular season), so may qualify him for the NCAA Championships (although times keep getting quicker and quicker due to the shoes, etc.) IF he chooses to go for that distance. Edit 2- Finally looked at the season to date results in TFRRS for the men's mile, and his time may not be quite quick enough to qualify for NCAA's. Still a VERY good early season race, but it looks like his altitude adjusted time "only" slots in at a tie for #12 in the NCAA, with A LOT of the season remaining.

Many more great (including Top 10 all-time) Buff results in yesterday's track portion of the meet. Team definitely showing the capability to earn some NCAA-championship qualifying events, with many more being able to contribute at the MPSF (conference) level.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field concluded its indoor home season here Saturday picking up eight wins during the track portion of the Colorado Invitational.

CU's men's distance took the meet and ran away with it in the mile and men's 3,000. Charlie Sweeney led a trio of CU men in the 3,000, picking up the win in 8:08.23. Close behind was Austin Vancil in second at 8:08.66, while Jace Aschbrenner finished third in 8:10.47. All three men's altitude converted times were good enough for top-10 in the NCAA before today, but are 12th, 14th and 21st in the NCAA as of 4 p.m. Saturday.

The distance crew started things off with the seeded versions of the miles where Eduardo Herrera took the win with ease at 4:03.53. His mark is good for 16th in the NCAA thus far. For the women, Emily Covert took the win in the 3,000 in 9:26.32 which puts her 16th in the NCAA as well.

One of the most anticipated events was the women's 400 and it proved to be what was expected. CSU's Lauren Gale took the win in a facility record and NCAA leading time 51.53, but closely behind her was Abbey Glynn in 53.00 and Emma Pollak in 53.76. Glynn was also under the previous facility record held by CU alum Gabby Scott.

With those astonishing marks, Glynn and Pollak slide into second and third in CU history, both passing previous school record holder Leona Russell. In the past three seasons, CU has had three women under the previous school record that stood since 1996. Glynn was just a hundredth of a second off of Russell's mark of 54.00 as a freshman, dropping over a second off her previous indoor best. This was the first open 400 for Pollak in her young CU career. Glynn now sits 17th in the NCAA while Pollak is 28th.

The men's 400 was also a huge showdown as Tyler Williams came up just short to CSU's Tom Willems who won in a facility record 46.54 seconds. Williams' time of 46.97 was also under the previous record of 47.10 by CU alum Duane McClurkin Jr., and with the new mark Williams moves to third all-time in CU history. The CU men took three of the top-four spots in the open event with Aaron McCoy in third at 47.41 and Garrett Nelson in fourth at 48.00. Williams' mark is top-30 in the NCAA at 29th.

Both set of quarter-milers performed well with second-place finishes as the men's team of Ian Gilmore, McCoy, Nelson and Williams ran 3:09.69 to finish second by two-tenths of a second. Their time is good for third in CU history. McCoy had the best split at 46.62 on the second leg, while Williams closed in 46.97. Nelson was just under 47.5 for his split while Gilmore was under 48.5. The mark is good enough for 25th in the NCAA.

The women's quartet of Grace Jenkins, Pollak, Jaida Drame and Glynn ran 3:37.77, good for second in CU history as they finished just behind CSU who broke the facility record. Both teams were under the previous best which was a CU school record at the time it was run. Glynn did all she could and anchored with a 52.28 split while Pollak ran under 53 with a 52.83 second split. Drake, who hadn't run yet this season, split out just under 55 seconds while Jenkins opened in 57.5. The women are now 21st in the NCAA.

Two Buffs took home a pair of titles today, Luc Andrada in the men's 60 and 200, and Avery McMullen who won the 60 hurdles to join her high jump win from yesterday. Andrada won at the line in the 60-meter dash in 6.74 and tied the 10th-best mark in the 200 at 21.50. McMullen dropped another huge personal best in the hurdles to win in 8.37, good for third in CU history. She also finished third in the 200 to move to fifth in that event in CU history with a time of 24.27.

Micaela Degenero made her season debut to win the women's 800 in a time of 2:10.61, good for eighth in CU history.

The meet was an incredible one with six total facility records falling, including all of the women's sprint records. Colorado heads to Spokane for the Washington State Combined Events Open and Invitational, while the rest of the team will compete at the Invitational At The Peak hosted by Air Force.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Colorado track and field sophomore Avery McMullen shattered the school record in the women's pentathlon here Thursday at the WSU Combined Events Open and Invitational with a winning mark of 4,231 points.

McMullen's mark broke the previous school record held by Annette Tannander since 1983 by exactly 160 points. The sophomore posted three personal bests within the five events and now ranks third in the NCAA.
...

With the record and the mark over 4,200, McMullen has all but secured her spot in the NCAA Championship. In the past five years, it has taken on average 4060 points with three of those years between 4071 and 4082. Her mark would've scored fifth at last year's NCAA Championships.

Also in competition today was Jada Green who finished sixth overall with a mark of 3,573 points. Green placed second in the shot put and fourth in the hurdles. Nick Bianco sits in fifth after the first day of the men's heptathlon with his strongest event remaining in the pole vault, while John Swabik is in seventh after day one of his first collegiate heptathlon.

Things heat up tomorrow with the conclusion of the heptathlon as well as the rest of the team beginning competition at the WSU Combined Events Open and Invitational.
