With men's golf being one of those sports that has MANY tournaments in both the fall and spring semesters, I wanted to set up a thread that as normal we can use to cover anything that comes up on and off the course up until the post-season begins with the Pac 12 Championships (scheduled to begin April 25th, 2022 this academic year). (I'll give the post-season its own thread(s).)

I'm starting this thread now as I see the team has both its current year schedule (https://cubuffs.com/sports/mens-golf/schedule) and roster (https://cubuffs.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/2021-22?&sort=class) appearing at cubuffs.com, and they've informally started their team season with what looks like, possibly (???), an intrateam tourney to determine who's in the team lineup for the opening season tourney (hosted by the AFA in Colorado Springs).

Go Buffs!!!

The one note re the roster that I see from QUICKLY looking at it- it looks to be one of the younger I've seen for any Buff sport (outside of when lacrosse started up many years ago with pretty much a full freshman class), with the 11 member team consisting of 8 freshmen***, 1 sophomore and 2 juniors.
(***4 of the freshmen (Hughes, Mason, Mendez and Olkowski) were also on last season's roster, so assume they are taking "mulligans" that the NCAA allowed whereby last academic year's seasons did not need to count for eligibility purposes being that they were so abbreviated due to the pandemic. Also wanted to note only 1 of those freshmen (Olkowski) show up in last season's stats, but the roster entries for the other 3 do note that they did participate in practices last academic year, so assume they were in Boulder at least part of the time.)

More on the intrateam tourney I briefly mentioned in the original post-

(Looks like this is just a 36 hole tourney, being held at the golf teams' (both men's and women's) home course in Erie, with the 2nd round scheduled to begin around 1:30 PM MT this afternoon.

Obviously one round of golf doesn't mean much compared to the MANY rounds still to come, but to possibly indicate and amplify on the youth movement inherent in the team (with 8 freshmen on the roster), it looks like after the 1st round, it was 3 TRUE freshmen sharing the lead at -2.)

(Looks like both Buffs have finished, with Mr. Holland in a tie for 15th at +18 and Mr. Matteson tied for 33rd at +23. With many other golfers on the course and everyone over par, assume they may end up better than their current positions.)

The team has the last round of its fall schedule today, and it looks like they've had a solid tournament so far on the Islands.

"
LAHAINA, Maui — The University of Colorado men's golf team moved up one spot into second place here Saturday, as the second round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate came to a close.

No. 14 Kansas, tied for the lead after one round, zoomed into the lead after recording a 22-under pat team score of 262; that gave the Jayhawks a total score of 38-under 530. That's 16 up on the Buffaloes, who scored a 9-under 275 in the second round and finished the day at 22-under 546. CSU-Northridge (548), Connecticut (548) and Loyola-Maryland (553) round out the top five.

Second through seventh are separated by just nine shots.

Junior Kristoffer Max is in fourth place and in contention for medalist honors, as he had bogey-free round of 6-under 65 Saturday on the 6,700-yard, par-71 Ka'anapali Golf Course; that gave him a career-best 10-under 132 for 36 holes and stands just two back of the lead. His 13 birdies over two days are tied for the second-most in the 80-man field, and he's played the par-4 holes the best at 7-under.
...

The final round is set for a Noon MDT (8 a.m. local) shotgun start. The Buffaloes will tee off on the No. 17 through No. 1 holes and be paired with Kansas, CSU-Northridge and Connecticut.

NOTES: The average score was 71.11 for the second round, lowering the average for the two days to 71.25 … Max has a run of 20 straight holes of par or better, the fourth different Buff to have one of that many holes or more so far this fall … Colorado continued to play the par-3s the best in the field (1-over collectively); CU is playing the par-4s at 7-under (second) and the par-5s at 14-under (sixth-best) … CU's 48 birdies are third-most after having the most in round one, trailing Kansas (48) and Boise State (48), but moved up from 11th in pars to fifth (108) … Of the 180 holes by the Buffs, just 24 have been over par (20 bogeys, four doubles).

Looks like the team saved their best for last (for fall anyways) as they finish in 2nd with a record breaking (820) score -

LAHAINA, Maui — The University of Colorado men's golf team finished second here Sunday in the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate, the final team event for the Buffaloes in their fall portion of the 2021-22 schedule.

It was CU's best finish in six tournaments this fall, as it bested a fifth-place tie in CU's own Mark Simpson Invitational last month.

No. 14 Kansas led from wire-to-wire, finishing with a 52-under team score of 800. The Jayhawks started the day with a 16-stroke lead over the Buffaloes, and matched a hot start by CU before pulling away. CU was 14-under at one point but eventually turned in a 10-under 274 to finish at 32-under 820. No. 44 Boise State finished third with an 824 score, while CSU-Northridge and Connecticut tied for fourth with 826 totals.

CU's gross team score of 820 set a school record topping the 828 it had in the Denver's Ron Moore Invitational in 2008. The 32-under in relation to par is the third-best in CU annals, bested only by 39-under in the 2008 DU meet and a 35-under effort in its own Mark Simpson Invitational in 2019.

Colorado has completed its fall schedule as a team; one tournament remains for junior John Paterson, who will represent his native Scotland in the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship. The event is slated for later this week (Nov. 4-6) at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. Twenty countries will be represented by teams consisting of four players – two men and two women. A 54-hole, four-ball stroke play competition, the field features many of the top amateurs from the competing countries, including many playing college golf in the United States. Paterson played in four tournaments (11 rounds) this fall for the Buffaloes and owns a 73.8 stroke average.

NOTES: CU was ranked 79th by GolfStat and 87th by Golfweek entering play here, and should move up in the final all rankings when released in mid-November … The average score was 71.70 for the final round, the highest of the three, as the average over the course of the tournament finished at 71.40 … Thirty-eight players finished under par for the event, with another four even; Kansas was the only other team beside the Buffaloes to have all five players finish in red numbers … Biwer and Eisenbeis finished the fall season with 18 straight holes of par or better; both had actually bogeyed their last hole in the second round … Colorado played the par-3s the best in the field (2-under overall), and played the par-4s second-best at 6-under (only Kansas also played those under par, at an impressive 29-under). CU was 20-under on the par-5s, seventh-best … Colorado finished third in both birdies (68) and pars (166) … The Buffalo five played 270 holes between them, with just 35 over par (29 bogeys, five doubles and a triple) … Colorado's stroke average for the fall (107 rounds) was 72.54; that is just 1/20th of a stroke shy of the school's all-time best fall mark of 72.49 set in 2017 (in 87 rounds) … Four played finished the fall with sub-72 averages: Biwer (70.07), McDermott (71.33), Hughes (71.67) and Max (71.75); Eisenbeis closed with a 73.00 norm … Jason Burstyn has the school record for most eagles in a season with eight in 2012-13; those have been tracked starting in 2011.

Forgot to mention earlier that, in addition to Yannik (see last post), congrats are in order to his twin Jeremy Paul, as he earned his card to the top U.S. "minor league" tour for the PGA, with I'm sure earning his PGA card his next big goal!

Team begins its spring (main) season tomorrow.

Go Buffs!

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team is set to open the spring portion of its 2021-22 season this Friday in the inaugural Wyoming Desert Match Play in Palm Desert, Calif.

It is the first time a CU team will open the spring in a match play event, and the first time in anything other than a dual match since the late 1960s before the sport moved on to mostly tournament events.

"We have been looking forward to starting the spring season ever since we left Hawaii at the end of October, head coach Roy Edwards said. The Buffaloes finished second in the Ka'naapali Classic, their best effort of the fall which saw the team competing mostly with freshmen and is easily the youngest team in school history.

"Starting in Palm Desert and in a competitive match play event will be a great way to lead into the spring," Edwards said. "The weather has been awful so far in Boulder and this is a great opportunity to find out what we are made of competitively without necessarily being our sharpest physically. The best players find a way and I expect this crew to have a great week and this will be a solid springboard into the remainder of the season."

Six players will represent the eight teams competing in the event, with each playing in the same position for all three matches. CU's lineup, in order from one through six: freshman Justin Biwer, freshman Dylan McDermott, junior Kristoffer Max, junior John Patterson, sophomore Adam Matteson and freshman Jack Holland.
...

Colorado is seeded third and will open against No. 6 seed Texas-El Paso. Other matches are No. 1 San Francisco vs. No. 8 Air Force; No. 2 Boise State vs. No. 7 Wichita State; and No. 4 Denver vs. No. 5 Wyoming. The teams were seeded based off their final fall standing in the GolfStat rankings: USF (#29), Boise State (#49), CU (#81), DU (#83), Wyoming (#139), UTEP (#148), Wichita State (#168) and Air Force (#271).

The event will take place at the Classic Club, a 7,322-yard, par-72 layout. Two matches will be played on Friday (CU's tee times are set for 8:48 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. MST) with the final match at either 8:00 or 8:48 a.m. Saturday.

Biwer To Represent CU In Genesis Collegiate Showcase

Biwer will go from Palm Desert to Los Angeles to play in the 8th Annual Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase on Monday, Feb. 14 at Riviera Country Club.

Biwer will represent Colorado, which is one of 23 schools to enter a collegian in the event. Other schools with a player in the field are: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Jose State, Southern California, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, UNLV, Wake Forest, Washington and defending champion Wyoming. The Pac-12 has the most schools in the field with seven.

"What a great opportunity for Justin and our program at Riviera on Monday," Edwards said. Many thanks go out to a couple of special Buffs close to our team for making this happen." Those are alums Steve Shaw and Doug Nock; Nock lettered for the Buffaloes in the 1980s. Those two will join Biwer and a yet-to-be determined PGA Tour player to compete against other college-am teams in a best-ball round; the winner will receive a $50,000 donation to the school's golf program. In addition, the top collegiate finisher will earn an exemption into the Genesis Invitational, set for later in the week, also at Riviera and hosted by Tiger Woods.

PALM DESERT — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened its spring season here Friday, earning a split in its two matches in the inaugural Wyoming Desert Match Play.

The Buffaloes dropped the morning match against No. 6 seed Texas El-Paso by a 4-1-1 count, but rebounded to defeat No. 7 seed Wichita State, 3-2-1 in the afternoon.

"It was a bit of an up and down day," head coach Roy Edwards said. "We really played poorly in the morning except for Jack, but the guys did a nice job in the afternoon to come out and gut out a win over Wichita State. The event is taking place at the Classic Club, which features a 7,322-yard, par-72 layout.

The Buffaloes will face off against the University of Denver in the fifth place match that will commence at 8:24 a.m. MST Saturday. Host and No. 5 seed Wyoming will play No. 2 seed Boise State for the event's title.

"Denver has a strong veteran team and it should be a great match," Edwards predicted of Saturday's match for fifth place.

The team ended up 2-1 this weekend after a TIGHT win over DU yesterday.

The Buffaloes defeated the University of Denver in the fifth place match, 3-1-2, using a strong finish to outdistance the Pioneers. CU won two of three matches here, but a quarterfinal loss to UTEP relegated the Buffaloes to consolation rounds. The first-time event took place at the Classic Club, which featured a 7,322-yard, par-72 layout. Host and No. 5 seed Wyoming won the title, defeating No. 2 seed Boise State.

As expected, it was a close match as CU was seeded No. 3 and Denver No. 4, with the Buffs ranked 81st in the final fall Golf Stat rankings and the Pioneers 83rd. Four of the six matches weren't settled until the 18th and final hole.

The team finished around mid-pack (tied for 9th out of 20 teams) in the tourney that ended yesterday - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/3/4/m...-ninth-in-wyoming-desert-intercollegiate.aspx

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't make up any ground here in Friday's final round and remained in a tie for ninth place as the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate came to a close.

No. 55 Charlotte, trailing by two shots entering the day, used a blistering 18-under 270 score to finish at 25-under par with an 839 total. The 49ers saw all five of their designated scorers turn in rounds in the 60s in posting the best single round score of the event by some 10 strokes (the 49ers had 29 birdies Friday; no other team had more than 19 in any round). No. 42 Nevada, the second round leader, finished second, some 18 strokes back at 857. Host Wyoming and New Mexico State tied for third (865) with Long Beach State rounding out the top five (866).

Colorado and Texas-Arlington tied for ninth with 10-over par 874 scores; CU had opened with a 288 and was tied for sixth, and had dropped to ninth after a 294 Thursday before closing with a 292 in the final round.
...

"It was a good event for Justin. He did a really nice job of managing his game," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Overall, it was a disappointing team finish. Our 'good' was really good, but we had way too many unforced errors and penalty shots. We have to be better when we aren't at our best."

Charlotte's late round charge was led by two of its players who shot the low rounds of the day. Ben Woodruff claimed medalist honors with a 5-under 67 that led to a 10-under 206 total; he bested teammate Matt Sherpstene, who carded a 6-under 66 and finished at 8-under 208. The pair accounted for 11 of the 18 strokes the 49ers were under par Friday.

The Buffaloes will remain on the west coast and travel south Interstate 5 to San Diego take part in San Diego's Lamkin Invitation on Monday and Tuesday. Biwer, Holland, Max, McDermott and Paterson will represent Colorado.

NOTES: The average score Friday was the lowest of the three rounds – 73.79 – which lowered the figure for the entire event to 74.29 figure for 239 rounds … Colorado played the par-3s the fourth-best in the field (1-over), the par-4s 13th-best at 35-over and the par-5s at 8-under, 12th-best (scorers only) … Colorado made the seventh-most birdies (47) and tied for 13th in pars (163); Biwer had 12 birdies to lead the team, McDermott 11, while Paterson led in pars with 42 … Biwer's team-leading stroke average rose just a bit, from 70.07 to 70.28 … The Buffaloes now own a 64-34-2 record against other Division I teams this season … CU entered the meet ranked 82nd by GolfStat and 83rd by Golfweek.
