After the #22 ranked Buffs (23-8, 14-6) had a comfortable win over Georgetown, and #14 ranked FSU (17-6, 11-4) defeated #13 seed UNC-Greensboro 64-54, they're scheduled to meet in a 2nd round matchup at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum(***) in Indianapolis this Monday, with tipoff scheduled for 5:45 PM MT. TV coverage is scheduled to be on TBS, with Brad Nessler, Steve Lavin and Evan Washburn on the call.
(***Was curious so checked and, per Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Farmers_Coliseum), the Coliseum, located on the Indiana State Fairgrounds, is the basketball home venue for Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), as well as a minor league (ECHL) hockey team.)

Per an FSU article I read, CU and FSU have never met before. (The Buff schedule currently links to a game (easy win) back in November 2007 as being against FSU, but when I go to the Buff record book, looks like that was actually against Florida A & M.)

Go Buffs!!!

FIRST LOOK FSU: Florida State, the No. 4 seed in the East, hung on to defeat UNC Greensboro, 64-54, in another first-round game Saturday.

Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles won despite going 0-for-9 from 3-point range, as forward RaiQuan Gray scored 17 points. FSU led by just one, 51-50, late in the game but put together a closing 13-4 run to seal the win.

Colorado fans may remember Hamilton from the old Big Eight, when he coached at Oklahoma State from 1986-90.

FSU (17-6 overall, 11-4 ACC) finished second in the ACC regular season standings, then lost to Georgia Tech, 80-75, in the ACC tourney championship game.

The 6-8, 260-pound Gray is the Seminoles' second-leading scorer (12.2 ppg) and leading rebounder (6.6 rpg). Guard M.J. Walker leads FSU in scoring (12.5 ppg) and the Seminoles have five players averaging at least nine points per game.

Florida State averaged 78.3 points per game this season while holding opponents to 69.6 per game. The Seminoles averaged nearly eight 3-pointers per game this year while shooting 38 percent from long range, and they outrebounded opponents by nearly five per game, averaging 37.4 boards per contest.

Hamilton, who has led FSU to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 in the previous two NCAA tourneys, is nursing a ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered before the tournament began.

Is it Monday yet? No advanced analytics here, I just read with anticipation while watching another B10 implosion.

CU NET15 FSU NET 25
CU vs ranked 3-1 FSU vs ranked 2-0
FSU average points per game are better, by about as much as opponent points per game are lower for the Buffs.

Really hope with the quick turnaround FSU scouting focuses on the Round 1 game and decides to sell out against the 3 ball. Would love to watch CU defense do its thing as Battey, Walton, Jabari and Horne take turns heading to the paint to draw contact and get us to the line.

Another long day and a half ahead. Better start drinking! :)

NCAA apparently does not license streaming audio. Maybe @DBT can tune to KOA and give us all his phone number.

Buffs Ready For NCAA Second-Round Matchup Vs. Florida State

By: Neill Woelk, Contributing Editor
Release: March 21, 2021

INDIANAPOLIS — After opening the NCAA Tournament on Saturday with an early game, the Colorado Buffaloes were glad to see their second-round contest notched for an evening tipoff.

The fifth-seeded Buffs, 96-73 winners over Georgetown, face fourth-seed Florida State on Monday in a 5:45 p.m. (MT) game at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

The extra time Monday will give 23-8 CU a chance for a morning shootaround and take one more look at the scouting report Colorado's coaches prepared for Leonard Hamilton's 17-6 Seminoles.

"It's going to be a different animal than Georgetown," head coach Tad Boyle said of the Buffs' first-ever meeting with Florida State. "A whole different set of personnel … You know (Hamilton's) teams are going to be long and athletic. You know they're going to be well-schooled defensively."

Hamilton, whose first head coaching job came at Oklahoma State in the late 1980s, then spent 10 years at Miami before coaching in the NBA for one year. He then moved back to the college ranks to take the reins at FSU, where he's been for the last 19 seasons.

There, he's built a consistent winner, taking the Seminoles to eight NCAA Tournaments, with this being their fourth in a row. FSU's last two appearances produced Elite Eight and Sweet 16 appearances.

"He's done an unbelievable job at Florida State," Boyle said. "Florida State is one of the better teams year in and year out that really nobody talks about on a national level unless they get to a Sweet 16 or Elite Eight. Well schooled, hard to score on and this year's team can really score the ball and shoot the ball from the perimeter at a very good rate."

While the Seminoles haven't been overly consistent of late — they've won just three of their last six, including Saturday's 64-54 victory over UNC Greensboro — they finished second in the ACC regular season this year, then lost to Georgia Tech in the ACC tournament finals. Their victories this season include two over North Carolina, as well as wins over Florida and Georgia Tech.

"They're a long, aggressive team," said CU wing D'Shawn Schwartz, who had five 3-pointers against Georgetown. "They like to get out in the lanes so we have to make sure we take care of the ball."

The Seminoles boast a balanced scoring attack — five players averaging at least nine points per game — and are dangerous from long range. FSU averages nearly eight 3-pointers per game while shooting better than 38 percent from long range (16th in the nation).

Guard M.J. Walker leads FSU in scoring at a 12.5 ppg clip, and he's closely followed by 6-foot-8, 260-pound forward Raiquan Gray, who is averaging 12.2 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds. The Seminoles also have a big man in the middle, 7-1, 240-pound Balsa Koprivica (9.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and a solid 3-point shooter in 6-6 guard Anthony Polite (9.5 ppg). Both Walker and Polite are shooting better than 40 percent from 3-point range.

"Good offensively, good defensively, athletic," Boyle said. "They pose a lot of challenges but we've seen good teams all year."
...

TOURNEY OPPORTUNITY: Saturday's victory was just the third opening round NCAA win for Colorado since 1963. The other two came in 1997 (over Indiana) and 2012, when Boyle's Pac-12 tourney champs beat UNLV.

But CU hasn't won two games in an NCAA Tournament since the 1955 Buffs advanced to the Final Four.

"To have a team like we have this year that I think is built for tournament play is exciting to me," Boyle said. "We have to go out and prove it and play well (Monday). Heck of an opportunity and we don't know the next time it will come around. Hopefully more often — hopefully we can knock the door down tomorrow."

SERIES: This is the first-ever basketball meeting betwen Colorado and Florida State.

BROADCAST: The 5:45 p.m (MT) game will be televised by TBS with Brad Nessler, Steve Lavin and Evan Washburn. KOA 850 AM and 94.1 FM will have the radio broadcast with Voice of the Buffs Mark Johnson and Scott Wilke.

Buffs are playing in the 2nd round of the Big Dance today!!!!!

Living in ACC country (North Carolina), I have seen FSU play a few times this year. They’re a hot/cold team, and are a tough out. But, I think CU has the ingredients to really surprise the country tonight (outside of the fan base).

I really like the Buffs chances, and they’re playing with some pretty dope confidence.

76-67 Buffs!

who are they most similar to from teams we’ve played in your opinion? Oregon?
Haven't really played a team like them all year. Bigger than USC (they will have lineups where their smallest guys is 6'6"). As physically talented - or more - than Tennessee, but extremely skilled offensively. Large, strong, athletic guards. Bouncey and large bigs. If I was building a team to make McKinley Wright's life hell, it would look like this one.

They do give up a lot of offensive rebounds, but they also go get a ton of them. We need to turn them over, get tons of free throws, and shoot well from 3.

That's a streak that is long overdue to be broken!

That is a scary description...but sounds like discipline is their weak spot here if they have that size yet still give up O Rebs at a high rate

I’ve got an upset stomach. I’m all nervous and can’t concentrate.

I'm excited for Horne to bounce back tonight, my prediction is the game is an ugly tadball affair, and Jeriah steps up at the right time to pull us through
