2022/23 INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD season news and discussion (NCAA Indoor Championships in Alburquerque Friday-Saturday, March 10th-11th)

Article after the team ended its indoor regular season, highlighted by a shool record performance by one of their freshmen.

Now onto the Indoor Championships for at least a couple Buffs, and onto the outdoor season (1st meet for CU showing as scheduled to begin March 17th in Pueblo) for the rest of the team.

SEATTLE — The University of Colorado track and field program has another young rising star after true freshman Isaiah Givens shattered the school record in the men's mile here Saturday in the final day of the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite.

Givens became the youngest Buff to break the 4-minute mile barrier two weeks ago at the Husky Classic when he ran 3:59.57 seconds for fifth. Two weeks later, he dropped nearly four seconds to take the victory in 3:55.99 seconds, nearly a second faster than Eduardo Herrera ran at this same meet last year for the previous record.

The true freshman settled into fourth and followed the pacers through the quarter around 62 seconds and the halfway mark at just near 2-minutes. With the pacer dropped off at the 800 mark, Givens took the lead and never looked back. He crossed the three-quarters mark at three minutes, then hammered home a 56-second final 400 meters.

Givens mark is 19th in the NCAA this season and the fastest amongst true freshmen (second in total freshman to redshirt freshman Nathan Green of Washington). Now Givens must wait and hope that three others ahead of him decide to focus on another qualified event and earn his way to the NCAA Indoor National Championships through scratches. He's got a great chance with nine guys ahead of him qualified in other events between the 800, 3,000 and 5,000, including Stanford's Ky Robinson and Washington's Brian Fay who are qualified in three events. There are also 10 men in the mile ahead of Givens that are a part of the top-six teams in the distance medley relay and may decide to aim for a national title in that instead of running the mile prelims and the DMR in the same day.

The Buffs added three more marks to the history books in addition to the school record. For the women, Avery McMullen was the highest placer with a third-place finish in the long jump. She bettered her own third-best mark in CU history to 6.07 meters (19-11).

The women's 3,000 did not conclude until Saturday, but Friday Ella Baran finished fourth in the invitational section of the 3,000 in 8:57.67. She now sits 19th in the NCAA in the 3,000 but is ninth in the 5,000.

Finishing his second day of competition, Nick Bianco moved up to fourth in CU history in the heptathlon with a score of 5,307 points. Bianco had a big second day and moved up four positions in the overall standings to fourth after clearing 16-00.75 in the pole vault for a second-place finish in that event.

The meet concluded with both 4x400-meter relays finishing top five with the men placing fifth in 3:09.75 and the women placing fourth in 3:38.92.

Two Buffs should be heading to the NCAA Indoor National Championships March 10th and 11th in Albuquerque. Baran is through in the 5,000 while McMullen dropped to 16th in the pentathlon and will have to wait the weekend to make sure no one passes her. The scratch period should be finalized this coming Wednesday with Givens on the bubble in the mile, Baran on the bubble in the 3,000 and McMullen in the pentathlon.

Wanted to mention the 1st "business" of the NCAA Indoor Championships, the declaration of which athletes scratched in events in which they qualified, was today, and a couple good news items for the Buffs:

  • As was noted in the article I quoted in the most recent post above, multi-eventer Avery McMullen was in the precarious 16th postition for the women's pentathlon with some conference meets still pending, with only the top 16 student-athletes who declare for all individual events getting to go to the Championships. Thankfully, no higher point totals were earned last weekend by other pentathletes, so she stayed at an auto-qualifying position without needing any one else having to scratch, and per one of the links below has accepted her entry into the Championships..
  • New CU indoor mile record holder Isaiah Givens time from last weekend was only #19 in this season's top performers'list. However, enough other runners ahead of him have chosen to scratch so that he will be going to the Championships (in Alburquerque).
So overall, those 2, along with distance runner Ella Baran in the 5000M, will be the 3 Buff representatives in the Championships that will be competed March 10th-11th.

BOULDER — The Colorado track and field program will be sending three individuals to the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships March 10-11 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Graduate transfer Ella Baran qualified through in the women's 5,000-meter run, pentathlon school record holder Avery McMullen is in for the pentathlon and true freshman Isaiah Givens qualified through in the men's mile. All three will earn All-American status once they start their races with the top eight earning First Team All-American honors and the ninth through 16th athletes earning Second Team All-American honors.

McMullen is the veteran of the group, returning for her second-straight indoor appearance. She finished as a First Team All-American last season after finishing eighth overall. She backed that up with a 12th place finish outdoors in the heptathlon. McMullen had the ninth-best mark in the NCAA up until last weekend when she dropped to 16th on the list following conference championship weekend. She sat out last weekend in the pentathlon but is coming off a school record in the 60 hurdles this season and an appearance at the USA Indoor Championships where she finished 8th in the pentathlon and fifth in the 60 hurdles.

This will be Ella Baran's first NCAA Division I Championships on the track, but she is no stranger to the championship stage. Baran qualified for four NCAA Division III Championships, including winning the indoor mile last year. She was an All-American for the Buffs in cross country this season with a 30th-place finish and is ninth on the descending order list in the 5,000.

Givens is earning his first trip to the NCAA Championships and will become the first true freshman male to earn an All-American honor since Ben Saarel. Givens, who redshirted cross country, broke the 4-minute mile barrier at the Husky Classic for the first time at 3:59.57, then two weeks later destroyed the school record by dropping nearly four seconds to 3:55.99. Givens was 21st on the descending order list but will enter the championships as the 15th-best runner in the field after scratches.

BOULDER — Three Colorado track and field student-athletes will begin competition at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.

Avery McMullen starts things off Friday morning in the women's pentathlon. The school record holder in the pentathlon and the 60 hurdles will run the hurdles at 10:20 a.m. MT to start off her five-event day. She then goes on to compete in the high jump at 11:30 a.m., the shot put at 1:30 p.m., the long jump an hour later at 2:30 p.m., and finishes off the pentathlon in the 800-meter run starting at 3:40 p.m.

This is McMullen's second NCAA pentathlon and third championship appearance. Last year she was eighth in the pentathlon, earning her first-ever First Team All-American honor. She followed it up with an appearance in the heptathlon outdoors. McMullen enters the championships as the 16th-seeded athlete in the field.

Shortly after the pentathlon wraps up, Ella Baran runs the 5,000-meter final beginning at 5:05 p.m. Baran was the NCAA Division III mile national champion last season before transferring to CU. She earned an All-American finish in cross country and is the ninth-ranked athlete in the field.

This will be Baran's first tactical race experience in the black and gold and has a strong chance to improve on her ranking. Baran became just the second woman in CU history to run under nine minutes in the 3,000 this season and has the speed and experience to close with the best of them.

The final race for the Buffs Friday comes with true freshman Isaiah Givens in the mile prelims at 7 p.m. Givens will be in the second heat and have the benefit of knowing what times need to be beaten to qualify through to the finals. Givens will be seeking a top-four finish in his heat to automatically move on to the finals Saturday, but could move on if he finishes top-six in his heat and earns one of the two next best times qualifier positions.

Givens is coming off an extraordinary winter where he ran a personal best of 4:06 in the mile at altitude in Boulder, then cracked the 4-minute barrier for the first time at the Husky Classic. He shocked everyone when he ran 3:55 and broke the school record in the mile at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite and earned his spot as the 15th seeded athlete in the mile.

All three of the Buffs at the championships will earn All-American honors with the top eight earning First Team honors and the ninth through 16th place athletes earn Second Team honors.

Both days of competition are available for ESPN+ customers to stream. Live results can be found here.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Colorado track and field closed out the 2023 indoor track and field season here Friday at the NCAA Indoor National Championships with two women earning All-American honors.

Avery McMullen got the day started in the pentathlon where she finished 12th overall for a Second Team All-American honor. McMullen scored 4,149 points, placing highest in the hurdles where she was fifth in 8.33 seconds. McMullen followed it up with a seventh-place finish in the high jump at 1.75 meters (5-8.75), then 15th in the shot put at 11.30m (37-1).

McMullen was seventh heading into the final event after finishing ninth in the long jump at 5.95 meters (19-6.25). She finished 13th in the 800 in 2:27.17 for her final 12th position.

Graduate transfer Ella Baran was next on the track for the Buffs. She finished 15th overall in the 5,000-meter run in 16:48.53 to earn a Second Team All-American honor.

Baran fell into 11th overall off the start as everyone bunched up. She dropped to the back of the pack through the first 1,000 meters as the race started out slow with the first 1,600 meters in 5:22 with all the women three wide across two lanes. Baran came through the 2K mark at 6:48, just a second and a half off the lead. The leaders changed to pick up the pace with 11 laps to go as the pace dropped from 41-43 seconds a lap to 39s. Baran moved up to 12th with eight laps remaining, then started to move up positions with 800 remaining to 10th. She fell to 15th in the final four laps as her pace fell off the 39 second laps.

True freshman Isaiah Givens was unable to compete in the men's mile due to an illness.

The Buffs finish up the indoor season and transition to the outdoor season next weekend with a few athletes heading to Eugene to compete at Hayward Field.
