(I plan on continuing to use and update this thread and post as, hopefully, the Buffs advance in the tournament.)

It's a few days until Buff SOCCER (10-3-5 overall; 4-2-5 in Big 12 play), the #9 seed in their 1st season back in the Big 12, head to Kansas City to begin its trek towards being Big 12 tourney champions with a 1st round match Wednesday afternoon that will end up being a quick back to back against the #8 seed Utah Utes (8-5-5, 5-3-3). (The Buffs just ended regular season play with a scoreless draw against the Utes this past Friday night.)

The winner of the CU-Utah match is scheduled to play a quarterfinal match, also starting at 1:00 PM MT, Saturday afternoon against the #1 seeded/ #9 ranked (as of 10/20) TCU Horned Frogs (14-2-2, 9-0-2), who have a 1st round bye.

All tournament games are scheduled to be played at the CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, I believe the only women's soccer- centric pro stadium in the country, and home to the NWSL's KC Current squad. It's very new, with the Current's 1st match there held this past March.

As with all CU home soccer matches and all conference tilts, all tourney matches are slotted to be streamed on (the premium) ESPN+ platform. (Links and more information about coverage for each CU game will be added further down in this post.)

In the current RPI rankings (dated 10/26/24, https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi ), CU is #62, while the Utes are at #80 and the Horned Frogs #14.

Go Buffs!!!

Nytes Named Goalkeeper of the Year, Three Others Earn All-Conference Honors

Colorado opens the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday in Kansas City

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
Colorado's standout goalkeeper, Jordan Nytes, headlined the Buffaloes' Big 12 All-Conference honors on Tuesday, taking home her second Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Year to go along with being named First Team All-Conference by the league's coaches.

Faith Leyba was also selected First Team All-Conference on Tuesday, while Juliauna Hayward earned Second Team and Jace Holley earned All-Freshman honors.

"We're really pleased that coaches across the Big 12 recognized our players," head coach Danny Sanchez said of the team's honorees.

Colorado Opens the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday
The Buffaloes will take on Utah in a rematch of last Friday's 0-0 scoreless draw in the first round of the 2024 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship at CPCK Stadium in Kansas City.

Colorado enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed, finishing the year 10-3-5 overall and 4-2-5 in the Big 12. Utah closed the year 8-5-5 overall and 5-3-3 in conference play.

The Buffs totaled 20 shots on Friday against the Utes but got outshot 10-8 in shots on goal. Colorado had three corner kick chances in the final minute of play in the first meeting and out-totaled Utah 11-2 in corner opportunities.

"I think we're so familiar with Utah, and they're very familiar with us," Sanchez said of the rematch. "I don't think there will be any big surprises, even though we only played them five days earlier. They had a really good ending to their season and have been playing really well. I expect Wednesday's match to be similar."

Wednesday will mark CU's first conference tournament since leaving the Big 12 after the 2010 season. The Buffs' last Big 12 Tournament match was a 0-0 first-round draw that saw Texas A&M advance 5-4 in penalties. Only three current Colorado players, Nytes, Lola Stanley and Greer Maguire, have ever played in a conference tournament.

"With the exception of three players, nobody in our program has played in a conference tournament," Sanchez noted. "It's similar to the NCAA Tournament and a one-and-done scenario. We know what's at stake when we get there."

CU has had trouble finding the back of the net lately, having gone the last four games without a goal. The Buffs have only dropped one of those four contests, playing to an 0-1-3 record down the stretch.

"We've been really good defensively and have been very difficult to score on," Sanchez said of the last four matches. "Now, in this knockout scenario, there will be a winner. We know what we have to do to get results."

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. MT. Chuckie Kempf and Sarah Gonzalez will call all the games on ESPN+.

It's win or go home for the Buffs. Their RPI is down to 62, so anything short of winning the Big XII title means an end to the season.

The Buffs tied it up in the 73rd minute on a H. Leyba goal (assist to Miranda)!

Still 1-1 in the 85th minute.

heck of a goal by Eva. holy cow. Nice to see the steaks are over and now we need to beat TCU

Late Heroics Advance Buffs in Kansas City

Colorado scored two unanswered goals to down Utah

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

KANSAS CITY –
Colorado sophomore Ava Priest blasted the game-winner in the 86th minute to complete the 2-1 come-from-behind win over Utah at CPKC Stadium on Wednesday. The Buffaloes scored two unanswered goals in the second half to shatter their scoring drought and advance to the second round on Saturday.

Utah led 1-0 after the first 45 minutes in the windy conditions as the Buffs' offensive struggles continued to plague the team in the opening half.

"I'm really proud of the group," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the win. "I know coaches say that, but when you've gone through the stretch we've gone through, you have to keep believing. That's all we said at halftime. At this point, you give up that early goal, but the soccer gods were on our side a little in the second half. Those things even out over time."

Hope Leyba ended CU's four-match scoreless drought and tied the game in the 73rd minute, sparking the Buffs the rest of the way. Priest's shot from an off angle on the near sideline continued to sail and found the far-side netting to propel the Buffs to victory.

"It was a great effort from Hope on the first goal, and then Ava was just fantastic today," Sanchez continued. "Jordi [Nytes] was big time [for us]. Credit Utah. It was a match that could have gone either way, just like Friday, and today was our day."

Colorado (11-3-5) was outshout, 16-12, by Utah in a reversal of Friday's regular-season finale. The Buffs won the battle in the offensive end on the day, out-earning the Utes 8-2 in corner chances.

"If you go through a stretch like we did and you're losing every game 4 or 5-0, that's one thing," Sanchez expressed. "But when you're tying or maybe getting lucky to get a draw, the players have belief because they are a good team and they're talented. It wasn't a tough sell to say that at some point it's going to be our time."

Nytes, the newly minted Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Year, made six saves in the win.

Utah (8-6-5) took the 1-0 lead with a goal from Katie Callaway and had five saves from Kasey Wardle.

The Buffs will look to avenge its 6-1 loss to TCU when the two teams meet in the second round on Saturday (1 p.m. MT/ESPN+).

Notes
Wednesday was the Buffs' first Big 12 Tournament win, beating Nebraska 1-0 in the first round on Nov. 5, 2008 (the team drew with Oklahoma State in the next game, 1-1, advancing on penalties…Priest's goal was her third game-winner of the season…Leyba's goal was her sixth of the season, tying her with James for the team lead and giving her a team-high 14 points on the season (6 G, 2 A)…Miranda's assist was her first point of the season…CU's first goal snapped a scoreless streak that reached 449:50, dating back to Priest's last goal against Texas Tech on Oct. 10…Colorado is now 7-9-5 all-time in the Big 12 Tournament…The win was Nytes' 24 as a Buff (5th all-time).

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez

On breaking the scoreless drought – "If we turn around and win this game in penalties and were' still 0-0, I think maybe there's a little less belief. But the fact that we got a couple of goals and Shyra in the first half, normally she buries those. To be fair, she's been out half the year, but we could feel it coming. There's no doubt about it. It was almost like a weight off our shoulders to get that one, and then Ava got the game-winner late. She was fantastic today. We'll build off the momentum from today. We'll be ready to go. We have two full days off, and at this time of the year, there's no being tired."

On the lineup going forward – "I thought our players off the bench were fantastic today. If you look at their [Utah's] sub minutes, they basically sub two players. Emerson [Layne], Claire [Curran], Lola [Stanley], Mal [Allen], Angelina [Moschetti] all gave us big minutes today. Then Greer [Maguire] helped shout the game down at the end. We'll be ready to go [on Saturday]."

On TCU – "They're the winners of the league for a reason. They have the Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and about 10 all-conference selections. They're deservedly a top team in the league this year. But when you get in these situations, one game knockout match, anything can happen, and we have to believe and continue to fight. But we're going to have to play our best match on Saturday."

Sophomore Ava Priest
On staying positive – "I think it says a lot about our team. I think we've been through a lot of adversity recently. This really showed that we can come together. All of us have fight in us, and all of us are going to fight to the very end in every single game."

On moving forward to Saturday – "I think rest and recovery over the next two days and then get ready for TCU this Saturday. It's a big game. They're obviously a good team, but so are we. I think it'll be a good competition."

On the last game against TCU – "I think we just have to come together as a team and carry this momentum that we got from today. I know we can do better than that [last game]."

Looking up the updated RPI ratings (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi) after yesterday's results, the Buffs moved all the way up to #47, so are at least are or getting close to being a tournament bubble team. (TCU''s now at #13, so obviously a win against them would be HUGE and possibly/ probably get them into the tourney..)

Colorado Eyes Redemption Against TCU

The Buffs and No. 7 Horned Frogs set for second meeting of the season

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

KANSAS CITY –
Colorado soccer knew what was in store for itself if the Buffaloes were to advance to the second round of the Sports Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship. The No. 9 seeded Buffs downed the eight-seeded Utah Utes on Wednesday, earning a shot at redemption against top-seeded and No. 7 ranked TCU on Saturday.

Kickoff at CPKC Stadium, like Wednesday, has been moved up to 10:45 a.m. MT (ESPN+) to avoid the inclement weather forecasted for Saturday in Kansas City.

Colorado (11-3-5) earned the chance to take on the Horned Frogs after its come-from-behind 2-1 win against the Utes. Hope Leyba and Ava Priest scored the Buffs' goals, snapping a scoring drought of nearly 450 minutes.

The Buffs and TCU clashed in Boulder on Oct. 5. Colorado, then ranked No. 14 in the nation, was on a 10-game unbeaten streak. Emerson Layne started the match off quickly for the Buffs, getting the game's first goal in the second minute.

From that point on, it was all TCU the rest of the day as the match ended in a lopsided 6-1 decision for the Horned Frogs.

"They're [TCU] winners of the league for a reason," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the win over Utah. "They have the Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and about 10 all-conference selections. They're deservedly a top team in the league this year. But when you get in these situations, one game knockout match, anything can happen, and we have to believe and continue to fight. But we're going to have to play our best match on Saturday."

The loss to TCU dominoed the Buffs to a 0-2-4 end to the regular season, dropping CU out of contention for a first-round bye this week. Colorado's defensive efforts kept the Buffs afloat with three shutouts in the streak but totaled just one goal in the last six matches.

Despite the struggles down the stretch, Colorado remained positive, hoping for a chance at redemption.

"I think it says a lot about our team," Priest noted. "I think we've been through a lot of adversity recently. This really showed that we can come together. All of us have fight in us, and all of us are going to fight to the very end in every single game."

Wednesday's win was CU's first Big 12 Championship win since beating Nebraska in the opening round in 2008. CU is now 7-9-5 all-time in the Big 12 Tournament.

TCU (14-2-2) catapulted up the rankings since the two teams last met. The Horned Frogs come into Kansas City as the Big 12 regular season champions on a 12-match unbeaten streak.

Saturday's winner will advance to take on the winner of BYU vs Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

This season, like the 2022 season the sum was less than the parts. It had a lot of experience and talent at keeper, backline, midfield and forward. This teams had more than enough individual talent to finish in the top four in the Big XII and make a run to the conference tourney final as well an at large NCAA bid.

Things fell apart beginning the the 1-6 loss at home to TCU. Didn't get to the game, so I don't know what happened andd why it had a lasting impact.
