Wanted to give a BIG GO (AND SKO) BUFFS to the Buffs (and all the other athletes) competing at the Olympic Games!

As the games progress, I'll hopefully find and post schedules whenever Buffs are getting close to compete.

(As noted in the title, I'll be planning (and assume others interested will also) on posting as live results come in for any action, so those who plan to record/ DVR action, or want to be surprised when they watch tape delayed broadcasts (assuming NBC will be doing that some with the time difference?), may want to avoid the thread on days when Buffs are competing.)

Per the list provided in the below Pac 12 tweet below, there are 5 Buffs athletes (out of 318 athletes and current coaches from the Pac overall) competing over the next few weeks.

Per the article ( https://pac-12.com/article/2021/07/20/pac-12-represented-318-olympians-tokyo-games) accompanying the list, out of the 318 Pac 12 athletes and coaches at the Games, "only" 123 are part of the U.S. team, showing the great international presence in the Conference of Champions.

The 5 Buffs listed on the Pac 12 list (Full list at https://pac-12.com/olympics/tokyo-2020/olympians-list) :

Best wishes for SAFE, SUCCESSFUL and POSITIVE experiences to all the Buffs, and for that matter ALL the athletes from around the world, competing at these games, and BIG thanks for providing entertainment to us in these pandemic times.

Preview Article now out.

Wanted to note they're listing a 6th Olympian Buff compared to the Pac 12 list's 5 I referenced in the original post, with Jake Riley, racing in the men's marathon, being the added Olympian.

From that article, the dates and times when the various #ForeverBuffs are scheduled to compete are listed within sentences in the article. (For track events, note the steeplechase has 1st AND final rounds. If not noted in the quote from the article, I've put the #ForeverBuff competing in parentheses at the end.). In order of the Buffs competing:

  1. "Action begins for the Buffs with (Morgan) Pearson in the men's triathlon at 3:30 p.m. MT on Sunday, July 25 (6:30 a.m. July 26 in Tokyo). "
  2. "Women's mountain biking is next on the schedule for midnight in Colorado on Tuesday, July 27. " (Erin Huck)
  3. "After those first two events, CU alums turn to the track where (Joe) Klecker opens in the men's 10,000-meter run with his race scheduled for Friday, July 30, at 5:30 a.m. MT (8:30 p.m. Tokyo)."
  4. "Friday, July 30, is the busiest day for CU fans as (Morgan) Pearson competes in the mixed triathlon at 4:30 p.m. MT (Saturday at 7:30 a.m.)."
  5. "Next on the track will be (Emma) Coburn and (Val) Constien, both of which are coached by CU alums. Coburn is coached by her husband Joe Bosshard, while Constien is coached by CU coaches Mark Wetmore and Heather Burroughs. The two will compete in the steeplechase prelims at 6:40 p.m. Saturday (7/31) (9:40 a.m. Tokyo Sunday) with eyes on the finals."
  6. "The (steeplechase) final is scheduled for Wednesday, August 4, at 5 a.m. MT (8 p.m. Tokyo time), the final track event for CU Olympians." (Possibly Coburn and/ or Constien.)
  7. "(Jake) Riley will close out the events for CU Olympians with the men's marathon scheduled for Saturday, August 8, at 4 p.m. MT (Sunday at 7 a.m.)."

Note - The full schedule (you have to click on the sport you're interested in to get to the detail) can be found at https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/en/results/all-sports/olympic-schedule.htm
  • Believe the default of the schedule for me was that originally Tokyo time was listed, but it did give the option of changing it so all times listed were based on my "local computer".
  • Note that the Olympics calls track and field "Athletics", so that's where the schedule, start lists and results will be found for the running Buffs.

1/2 way through the final leg of the triathlon (the 10Km run), and #ForeverBuff Flora Duffy is in the lead by 47 seconds!

Hope she can keep it up!
(She gained 30 more seconds over the 2nd place runner from the 2.5Km to 5.0Km time checks, so unless she blows up, it's looking like gold is a definite possibility.)

According to the broadcast, Duffy graduated from CU in 2013 and now splits her time between Boulder and South Africa. First gold medal for Bermuda (pop. 72,000). She was absolutely dominant in the run.

Just a reminder that the next #ForeverBuff in action is scheduled for midnight tonight (edit- MT), when mountain biker Erin Huck is scheduled to attack the cross country course as a member of the U.S. team. (IF I'm reading the live results page linked to below, she may be bib #24.)

Per https://www.bicycling.com/racing/a37095669/how-to-watch-2021-tokyo-olympics/,

"
The mountain bike events take place at the Izu MTB Course, which is about 150 kilometers from Tokyo. The course measures 4.1 kilometers, with a 1.3-km starting loop, and features five climbs and 150 meters of elevation. In the women’s race, France’s Loana Lecomte is the heavy favorite. Lecomte won the U23 world title last year, and she’s undefeated on the World Cup circuit this year, having led every lap of every race this year. However, don’t count out defending Olympic champion, Sweden’s Jenny Rissveds or up-and-coming American star Haley Batten.
"

Looks like live results should be available at https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/oly...results-women-s-cross-country-fnl-000100-.htm .
(Based on results for Ms. Huck showing on the Olympic website if I click on her name, looks like a finish in the teens would be a good result for her. Of course, "on any given day...".)

Next up for the #ForeverBuffs is Morgan Pearson this afternoon at 4:30 PM MT (7:30 AM Saturday Tokyo time) in the triathlon mixed relay, where he will be part of the U.S. team.

For those (like me) who don't know what this is- per https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Triathl...elay-to-Make-Its-Debut-at-Tokyo-Olympic-Games :

"
Each of the 17 countries on the start list will field a Mixed Relay team of two men and two women, with the order as: female/male/female/male. In the Olympic race, each athlete will complete a super-sprint triathlon consisting of a 300-meter swim, draft-legal 6.8-kilometer bike, and 2-kilometer run before tagging off to the next teammate.

Isn't Emma Coburn in a prelim for the steeplechase tonight?

Yep.

Below tweet links to an article with more on Val Constien's story, who along with Emma Coburn is scheduled to race their Round 1 steeplechases this evening beginning at 6:40 PM MT. (An earlier article which features a Q & A with Ms. Coburn can be found via a link in post #14 above.)

From the heat sheets available at the live results link provided below, Ms. Coburn is in Heat 1, scheduled to start at 6:40 PM MT, while Ms. Constien's Heat 3 is supposed to begin at 7:10 PM MT. The top 3 finishers in each heat auto qualify, with the next 6 fastest finishers among all 3 heats earning time qualifiers into Wednesday's final.

Live results should be available as the races commence via links at https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/oly...event-schedule-women-s-3000m-steeplechase.htm .

The steeplechase heat #1 has begun. (Edit- No news for those following the Olympics, but still wanted to mention it's TOASTY in Tokyo, with it already at a humid 90 degrees, even at around 10:00 in the morning in Tokyo.)

Perfect situation for Ms. Coburn, as she and 2 others quickly went ahead of the rest of the runners and built a BIG lead, so she was able to use the other 2 as pacemakers and, when they had a safe big lead going into the last lap, she just cruised home to earn the "easy" 3rd place auto qualifying spot for her heat!

Now- hope Ms. Constien also qualifies for the final!

Val Constien ended up being in the slowest heat but was able to stay in the lead group of 5 that broke away a little bit, and looked to have auto qualified with the 3rd or 4th best time qualifying time while finishing 4th in her heat!

Less than 15 hours until Ms's. Coburn and Constien race in the 3000M steeplechase final. (Hope I can get myself up early enough to see it live at 5:00 AM MT.)
