Championships Thread- Skiing at the 2021 NCAA Championships (Last Rokos led Buff team; Francona and Jackson, New Hampshire; Wed. 3/10-Sat. 3/13)

Congrats to Filip Forejtek for earning a 2nd place/ podium finish in the men's slalom! (After leading the 1st run, he ends up SO close (.06 seconds behind) the winner (from Vermont).)

Buff Joey Young, who had to hike up the mountain in his 1st run, didn't start his 2nd; hope he's OK.

Overall, not much was resolved from the men's slalom. Unofficially, the Buffs only came in 5th (with 56 points), but points were widely spread out, so that point total was only 10 behind the event winner's (Montana State) 66 total. The Utes finished in 4th with 58 points, so the Buffs didn't make up any ground towards 1st place.

Article after yesterday's action as we head into today's finale, which is scheduled to start in ~5 minutes.-

FRANCONIA, N.H. – Junior Filip Forejtek and Stef Fleckenstein both earned first-team All-America honors as the Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team remained in second and closed the gap on Utah in the slalom competition here Friday at the NCAA Ski Championships at Mittersill-Cannon Mountain.

Forejtek took second in the men's race, just seven-hundredths of a second from a National Championship, and Fleckenstein finished fourth in the women's race to give her two first-team All-America honors here at the Championships after her second place GS finish on Wednesday.

Freshman Louis Fausa finished 11th in the men's race, missing out on All-America honors by just two-hundredths of a second, and on the women's side freshman Cassidy Gray, Wednesday's gold medalist, took 13th with sophomore Emma Hammergaard had the second-fastest second run in the field to move up into 16th place. Senior Joey Young was disqualified on the first run.

The women's scored 64 points, third most in the field behind Denver and Vermont, and 16 points ahead of Utah's total of 48 points. Despite Young not finishing, the men scored 57 points, fourth best in the field behind Montana State, Denver and Vermont, and 26 points ahead of Utah's total of 31 points. The Utes Wilhelm Normannseth was disqualified in the first run while Gustav Vollo self-reported a DQ in the second run.

As it stands, the Buffs picked up 121 points and cut the Utes lead from 66.5 points down to 24.5 points with one day of competition left, having a 398-373.5 advantage over the Buffs. Behind CU is Denver, who had the most slalom points on the day, with 346 while Montana State (314.5) gives the RMISA the top four spots and Vermont (299) rounds out the top five.

Women's - http://www.rmisaskiing.com/liven.php?r=1782
Men's - http://www.rmisaskiing.com/liven.php?r=1783
(One thing I'm a little bummed by - often, Nordic races have live results with splits so you can see how the racers are doing on the track (even more this season when all races have interval rather than mass starts), and the announcer did seem to be referencing them in Thursday's races, but I haven't found anything yet online that provided splits. The links above only provide finishing time and results.)

The Buffs racing today, with their bib #'s and scheduled (interval) start times-

Women:
22 Weronika Kaleta CU 10:11:00 AM
28 Ezra Smith CU 10:14:00 AM
32 Anna-Maria Dietze CU 10:16:00 AM

Men:
20 Will Koch CU 12:10:00 PM
38 Magnus Boee CU 12:19:00 PM
40 Oyvind Haugan CU 12:20:00 PM

The Buff women are unofficially finishing 3rd today in team points with 64 (7th, 11th and 12 place individually), with the Utes getting the win (as they have all season) with 86 points, making it more and more likely Utah will be the 2021 overall Champions (although of course anything can and has happened in sports, so who knows ...). The CU women's solid performance today has lengthened CU's point advantage in 2nd, so hopefully, again barring anything very unusual happening, they should be heavily favored to get the overall silver due to the men's Nordic group's strength.

The men's race, the last of the championships, is now beginning. Once again, info on the Buffs racing (bib #, name and start time (converted to MT)) -

20 Will Koch CU 10:10:00 PM
38 Magnus Boee CU 10:19:00 PM
40 Oyvind Haugan CU 10:20:00 PM

Edit-

Unofficially, looks like the Buffs are going to end up 2nd in the overall Championships (Congrats to the Utes for the win).

Within their disciplines, both the CU Nordic men and Alpine women had the most points in these championships. With those groups represented this year at NCAA's (so not even counting others on the roster and any incoming freshmen) with 3 freshmen, 2 sophomores and 1 junior, the future looks bright for the Buffs.

Still UNOFFICIAL results-

Not all under his tenure, but #100 still has a nice ring to it for Coach Rokos to retire on after his 31 years as the Buff coach!!!

Wish him only the best going forward.

And, of course, once again congrats to Mr. Boee!!!

JACKSON, N.H. – Sophomore Magnus Boee capped one of the best seasons in CU history by winning the men's 20K freestyle race, his second individual National Championship in three days and the 100th in Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team history. The Buffs put up a valiant final-day fight for the title and in the end finished second to Utah by 31.5 points here Saturday at Jackson Nordic Center to close out the 2021 NCAA Ski Championships.

The Buffs lead the nation in individual championships and are the first school to reach 100. Boee's win is also the 10th of his historic season, tying the record for all men's skiers in CU history that was first set over 60 years ago by Dave Butts in 1960. Only Line Selnes and Maria Grevsgaard, both women's Nordic skiers, have won more races in a season, each with 11.

The Buffs entered the day 24.5 points behind the Utes, a tall task given the Utes strength in Nordic, particularly on the women's side. The Utah women, which posted a perfect score of 111 points on Thursday, were again boosted again by a 1-3 finish but the Buffs hung with them, as freshman Weronika Kaleta finished seventh while junior Ezra Smith took 11th and sophomore Anna-Maria Dietze 12th. The Utes won the race 86-64 over the Buffs to open up a 46.5 point advantage with the men's race remaining.

WHAT IT MEANS: It's never the Colorado Ski Team's goal to finish second, but a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships is still a great accomplishment. Along with 20 National Championships (19 NCAA, 1 AIAW), the Buffs have 13 more runner-up finishes at Nationals. Since 2006, the Buffs have four National Championships, seven runner-up finishes and just three other finishes, two third place and one fourth. The Buffs have finished four of the last five NCAA Championships as the runner-up. Given everything that had to happen this season, even having a season is an accomplishment in and of itself, much less staying healthy enough to compete at a high level and prepare for the national championships.

UP NEXT: The 2021 college season is complete, but several Buffs will likely continue to ski competitively. The U.S. Alpine National Championships will take place in April in Aspen, and some more continental cup or World Cup races may be on tap for several Buffs.

RICHARD ROKOS NOTES:
  • Today marked the final competition for Richard Rokos as CU's head coach, completing his 31st season at the helm of the program and 35th season at CU. He finished his career with eight National Championships, 20 RMISA Championships and 73 meet wins, compiling an astonishing dual record of 1,547-186 (.893).
  • Rokos' skiers have won 46 Individual National Championships, 65 Individual Regional Championships, and 364 race wins while compiling 290 All-America honors.

Richard Rokos: "I was hoping for it. Utah has a women's team that has recruited so good for the next four years. They have girls one through three capable of doing every single race and it is scary. We'll have to do some extra work for the next couple of years. Otherwise, the rest of the team is in good shape. To beat those three or four Utah girls will be tough."

"Second place makes you always a little hungry. There is still room for improvement and goals for us to meet. I am excited that we got to that level and we still have a place to go. There is room for improvement and we can start with a new title, a new place to go and a new team. I think it is well set right now."

"Emotional is not the right word. I just went around because we won here in 1995. Fredrik Landstedt is the Director of Utah skiing and he was my assistant. He was a Nordic coach and we celebrated a national title right in the same place as the Nordic race. There are a lot of good memories. It is more of thinking back and saying, 'That was a hell of a time.' It is not over. I know I'll be around in some capacity helping or advising. We will see. I am not giving any limits to myself. I am done with university, but I still have a place to go to help them. I am excited about that part."
