College Football News, Rumor & Humor

BYU is the entity suspending him.
And have to give them some credit, this isn't the first time they have suspended a prominent athlete for violation of their conduct code when that athlete could make a significant difference in their teams performance.

In the past they suspended a basketball player, Brandon Davies, who would have helped them in the NCAA tourney, they suspended a football player Reno Mahe, who was good enough that after later returning played in the NFL, and they have suspended others in similar situations.

Sometimes they are hard to figure out but they deserve credit for being willing to stand by their policies even when it could cost them wins. This in contrast to a few "powerhouse" programs that have been willing to ignore criminal behavior for star players.

BYU signed the #1 HS MBB recruit in the country last cycle and they just got a verbal from 5* QB Ryder Lyons (beat out Oregon among everyone else). BYU is throwing around crazy money right now and seem to be all in with building their athletic programs, so it surprises me that they are actually sticking to their honor code on this. I could see a 2 game suspension so they can say they adhered to it, but they had to know 7 game suspension was going to push him out of the program altogether.

I don't know who their QB1 is now, but the Buffs schedule and path through the Big 12 got a lot easier without Retzlaf

I heard Lyons was likely never going anywhere other than BYU. STRONG LDS family.

They are pushing hard though in recruiting.

The Mormons have seen what Notre Dame has done for the Catholic Church in terms of exposure and they want in on it. They would love to put a national championship in either football or basketball out there for the public to see, to legitamize them as a "major" university in the public view.

Yes the have the NC from 1984 but that wasn't taken seriously by most fans, with the college football playoff it they could win some playoff games it would be huge for them. Suspending top players does indicate that they take their codes seriously.

Interestingly, no CRIMINAL charges have been filed.

By admitting to consensual sex, he's broken the honor code. Period.

By leaving BYU, and transferring, I'd be concerned with the partiality of the courts in Utah County (90% LDS). And that concern would extend to the possibility of criminal charges perhaps being filed.

I'd actually consider serving the suspension and appealing to the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility once he's through the case in UTAH while still attending BYU. He's got to get through these charges and avoid criminal charges for sure...

The case has been withdrawn and dismissed today

Dee, Frank, and Dennis decide that people can forgive anything (the Holocaust, Floyd Mayweather’s woman-beating), except child molestation. Dee: “What about the Catholic Church?” Dennis: “They did sidestep bangin’ kids pretty masterfully. But they have billions of dollars at their disposal.”

Nice fall into the trap.

The child molestation scandal in the Catholic Church was horrible and is still being dealt with but the idea that the Church is some center for abusing kids is patently false.

The Church is now one of the most progressive orgainzations both in the US and worldwide in protecting children. Studies have shown that Catholic priest are far less likely to molest than members of the general public. I spent a career in public education and it is exponentially more common there than in the Church.

Three things though made the Church an ideal target for legal action and media attention. One was that because of the position of trust held by clergy members, especially priests, any violation of this trust is much worse. Second and biggest is simply that the lawyers saw money. The Church had assets that could be taken in court with of course the giant contingencies going to the legal teams that won the cases. Small denominations didn't have enough money to be worth suing, government entities like schools had govenmental immunity to being subject to large judgements. Third is that a significant number of people simply don't like the beliefs of the Church and support anything that goes against it.

The sad thing is that the Church wasn't and isn't some giant depository of wealth. In many cases the money to pay judgements came directly from services that benefit the community. Schools in poor areas where the public schools are failing, hospitals, soup kitchens and food banks, support services for victims of domestic violence, homeless services, etc.

Certainly the Catholic Church like any organization run by humans has it's failings and it's areas in need of improvement but I can tell you from one who has direct experience in the Church that no major organization is more serious about preventing child abuse right now than the Church is.
