I usually start and maintain one thread each season to report on and discuss all regular season results and other news about one of CU's most storied sports programs, the men's and women's cross country teams. As usual, this thread will be used for the regular season only, and then, gods willing, I'll create separate threads for the Pac 12 and NCAA Championships. (Pac 12's are scheduled for Friday, October 29th.)

Figured I'd start this thread now, as yesterday the team released its schedule for the coming season. Note that cross country and track and field are the sports that, at least based on my experience, are most likely to have adjustments to their schedules even after the season begins. In this case (as makes sense with the pandemic still with us), the schedule looks a little light right now, so I'd think it's possible a race or two MAY (???) be added late (if of course the pandemic situation allows it).

Best wishes to the men's and women's teams!

It's only one month until the scheduled season opener (in Laramie)!

Note - One great thing I'm seeing in the schedule is that regionals are again scheduled. I hope this means that XC is going to go back to using its points (KOLAS) system to determine which teams have earned their NCAA Championship berths. (Last season, the teams had to be selected via a selection committee's judgement for the 1st time due to Covid-19.)

BOULDER — The 2021 Colorado cross country season will start on September 3, with the Buffaloes heading to the Wyoming Invitational in Cheyenne, Wyo.

CU will then travel to another pair of meets, the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on September 18, and the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on October 15 in Tallahassee, Fla., before the postseason.

The Pac-12 Cross Country Championships will be on October 29 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and for the fifth consecutive year, it will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Network. More details about the races will be released at a later date.

The Buffaloes have two weeks off before returning to the state of Utah for the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, November 12 in Provo, Utah. BYU will host the meet at East Bay Golf Course. The top two teams in each race will automatically advance to the NCAA Championship, November 20 in Tallahassee, Fla., as Florida State will host the meet for the first time.

Also, noticed the team released its coming year roster. Of note to me:

  • It looks like all the top seniors from last season seem to be coming back (which the NCAA is allowing due to last (weird Covid-19) season). This includes the 3 women's seniors who competed at last season's NCAA's (and were 3 of the top 4 Buff finishers there if I'm reading the results right), as well as the 3 men's seniors who competed at NCAA's (and were 3 of the top 5 CU finishers).
  • I believe I've already covered them individually in the Olympic Sport recruiting class, but wanted to mention in general terms it's a BIG incoming class for the men, with 9 freshman showing on the roster. (Coach Wetmore mentioned 10 in his press conference, so don't know if there's another one still to be named, or if he was rounding off.) The women's frosh class is 3, which per Coach Wetmore in the press conference is closer to usual (he said 4 per gender is normal).
  • Transfers, especially grad transfers, seem to be becoming a bigger deal every year, and it's definitely true this season, with Coach Wetmore in his press conference saying there are 3 new men and 2 new women transfers. (I'm only seeing one new women's transfer (Ms. Orre from Cornell), so be interesting to see who the 2nd one is.)

Between the teams returning almost everyone, obtaining some nice transfers, and some key runners having off-days at last season's NCAA Championships, I'd GUESS both the men and women will hope to exceed by quite a bit their rankings in these initial pre-season polls.

NEW ORLEANS — With the 2021 NCAA Cross Country season a few days from beginning, the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has released its preseason polls and the University of Colorado has both programs selected in the top-15.

The women's team will start the season ranked eighth after recording a seventh-place finish at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championship on March 15, 2021. The Buffs return all seven runners from that NCAA team including All-American Abby Nichols who led the team with an 18th-place finish.

CU picked up 256 points in the poll, just six fewer than seventh-ranked Alabama (250) and 10 less than sixth-place Arkansas (260).

There is not much surprise the preseason favorite is the reigning NCAA Champion, BYU, as they recorded eight first-place votes (out of 11) and 322 points. The NCAA runner-up, NC State, received a pair of first-place votes and 318 points. Stanford, which finished third at NCAAs, recorded the final first-place vote and 308 points for third. New Mexico (293) and Michigan State (281) round out the top five, respectively.

In the men's rankings, CU came in 12th, moving up two positions from their 14th-place finish at nationals with 200 points. Like the women, they return all seven harriers from that team and look to improve on their finish.

Northern Arizona, the men's 2020 NCAA Champion, is the preseason favorite, picking up 10 first-place votes and 328 points. Second-place Notre Dame received the other first-place vote for 308 points while BYU, which finished seventh at NCAAs, moved up to third with 299 points. Oregon (288) edged Stanford (285) for fourth, pushing the Cardinal to fifth.

In the NCAA Mountain Region rankings, the Buffaloes are both third. The women are behind BYU and New Mexico, which placed sixth at nationals, while the men are just behind Northern Arizona and seventh-place finisher BYU.

The first meet of the season for Colorado is Friday, September 3, as the Buffs will travel north to Cheyenne, Wyo. for the Wyoming Invitational. Both teams will race a 5-kilometer course. The women will go first at 6 p.m. MT and the men will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Preview for the 1st races of the year coming up in less than 2 days (1st race is at 6:00 PM MT), and the season in general-

"
BOULDER — Less than six months after racing at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships March 15, 2021, in Stillwater, Okla., the University of Colorado will start the 2021 campaign.

Both the men's and women's teams were not satisfied with their finishes during the 2020 season and are excited for the opportunity to get going and race in a more typical atmosphere. The women were seventh at NCAAs, while the men were 14th; both placed second at the Pac-12 Championships on March 5, 2021.

Training for the upcoming season got underway in August and now with the first meet looming, it is fair to say there is a "normal" feeling in the air.

The opening race of the campaign will be the Wyoming Invitational in Cheyenne, Wyo., on Friday, September 3. It's been a race the Buffs have opened their season with the last few years (except for 2020) as it is a great way to gauge where everyone's fitness is and what work needs to be done in the next eight weeks before nationals.

A new meet this year is the addition of the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., September 18. The Cowboy Jamboree is one of the longest-running meets in the country and usually attracts some quality opponents, making it a good early test for CU. One month later the Buffs will head to Tallahassee, Fla., for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on October 15. Florida State will host the meet as the Seminoles will host the NCAA Championship for the first time in November.

Pre-Nationals is the final test before the postseason starts. Utah is the host of the Pac-12 Championship on October 29, in Salt Lake City and then BYU will host the NCAA Mountain Region Championship two weeks later on November 12. The NCAA Championship will take place on November 20, in Tallahassee.

The schedule is about as normal as CU can get. But there is something unusual when it comes to the rosters. Due to the transfer portal, this year there are many new faces on the team which include many graduate transfers and freshmen that could help both teams.

'We will have three male and two female experienced people joining our squads that could help our varsities immediately," head coach Mark Wetmore said at CU's annual fall sports media day. "Then also, we've had a successful year with young people, with true freshmen. Most noticeably on the men's side where we have 10, usually we have four. So there are a lot of new faces."

Those new faces join an already talented group of runners as the Buffs did not lose a single scorer or letterwinner from the 2020 season.

On the men's side, there are two returning All-Americans in Eduardo Herrera and Alec Hornecker. Herrera also won the 2020 Pac-12 men's individual crown and has the chance to become the first CU male to win back-to-back individual titles since Jorge Torres won three straight Big 12 titles (2000-02). In addition to his win at conference, Herrera recorded a runner-up finish at the FSU Winter Classic and a third-place finish at the Battle Born Collegiate Challenge. Hornecker was the No. 2 scorer for CU at the first three meets of the 2020 season, finishing eighth, seventh and 11th, respectively, before leading the Buffs at NCAAs. His 11th-place finish came at conference.

CU's other returning scorers are Hunter Appleton, Jace Ascebrenner, Jake Derouin, Ethan Powell, Paxton Smith and Austin Vancil, who, along with Hornecker, was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team.

The women return an All-American in Abby Nichols who placed 18th at the 2020 Championship. She led the Buffs at nationals and at the Battle Born Collegiate Challenge. Nichols also earned All-Pac-12 Second Team honors with an eighth-place finish, three spots behind teammate Rachel McArthur who was fifth overall to earn first team all-conference honors. McArthur was the team's leader in two races – the other being the season opener, the FSU Winter Classic, where she was also fifth.

Colorado's other returning scorers are Madie Boreman, Elizabeth Constien, Emily Covert and Micaela DeGenero as all four scored in at least one of the four varsity meets. Boreman and DeGenero both joined Nichols on the All-Pac-12 Second Team.

Just as the Buffs have gotten better with experience, transfers and newcomers, it is to be expected their opponents have gotten better as well.

The Pac-12 is always one of the best conferences, if not the best conference, in the country for distance running. This year should prove no different with eight programs, four men's and four women's, ranked in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. On the women's side, Stanford leads the league at third and Colorado is eighth. Washington is 10th and Oregon State comes in at 22nd. The men are led by Oregon at fourth, but Stanford is right behind at fifth. The Buffs are 12th, one position in front of Washington (13th).

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The 2021 NCAA season was set to begin for the University of Colorado men's and women's cross country teams on Friday evening at the Wyoming Invitational but mother nature had ideas in mind, causing a couple of delays with heavy rain and lightning.

The women's 5-kilometer run at Little America Golf Course, which was pushed back 30 minutes from the original start time, was completed. But the men did not have a chance to run their 5k as heavy rain after the women's race forced their race to be pushed back again, and after a lightning delay, the race was postponed.

Race officials rescheduled the men's race for Saturday at 7:30 a.m. but CU would be unable to make the trip again, meaning the men would have to wait to open their season until the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on September 18.

WOMEN'S RACE
As a race, the Wyoming Invitational was successful for the CU women, who are ranked eighth in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. Running a mixture of athletes in uniform and unattached, the Buffaloes took second (34) in the team standings, just two points behind Colorado State (32). Colorado placed six total runners in the top 10 and of those six, four were in uniform.

Emily Covert led CU, finishing second overall in 17 minutes, 17.8 seconds. She was less than half a second behind Colorado State's Claudia Burgess (17:17.4) who took home the individual crown and was a split second in front of another CSU harrier, Lauren Offerman, who placed third (17:17.9).

India Johnson raced unattached for CU but recorded a strong performance as she placed fourth overall in 17:19.2. The Michigan State transfer was a little over a second off the lead pack of three.

The Buffaloes also recorded the sixth, seventh and eighth positions. Madie Boreman led that trio, finishing sixth in 17:28.1. Annie Hill was seventh (17:30.5) and Rachel McArthur placed eighth (17:31.1). Another unattached Buffalo, Hannah Miniutti, finished just behind the group in ninth (17:36.8).

Colorado had another two uniformed harriers finish in the top 20 as Kaitlyn Barthell was 11th (17:42.5) and Elizabeth Constien placed 17th (17:55.9). The Buffs' other runner in uniform at the meet was Anna Shults, who recorded a 33rd place finish (18:35.4).

There were several additional unattached Buffaloes racing Friday evening. Elliot Pribramsky finished 30th (18:32.6) while Whitney Valenti was 38th (18:58.8), leading a pack of three more Buffs across the finish as Bella Longo was 39th (19:07.0), Camille Jackson was 40th (19:08.0) and another new transfer, Elle Orie, was 41st (19:09.0). Karina Andersen was the final unattached runner for CU, crossing the finish 57th (19:53.1).

BOULDER — The University of Colorado will continue its cross country season this weekend with both the men's and women's teams racing at Oklahoma State's Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The meet will take place on Saturday, September 18, at the OSU Cross Country Course. The men's 8-kilometer race will start at 7:30 a.m. MT (8:30 a.m. CT) and the women will follow with a 6k run at 8:15 a.m. MT (9:15 a.m. CT). This will be the second time the Buffs have raced this course this calendar year as the 2020 NCAA Championships were run there on March 15, 2021.

"We have never been to the Jamboree before but we did run on the course in the strange last Covid year," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "We are learning about the course because the NCAA Championships are there in 2022."

Live results for the meet are available here.

This will be the first time Colorado's men have had a chance to race this season since heavy rain and lightning caused several delays at the Wyoming Invitational, forcing the Buffs to wait another 15 days to start their 2021 season. The women will be running their second meet of the season having already raced at the Wyoming Invite.

Solid start for the men's team as they unofficially finished 3rd, ahead of one (Tulsa) of the teams ranked ahead of them coming into this race. Was a little nervous around the halfway point, as presumed team leader Eduardo Herrera vanished from the splits, but it must not have been meaningful (often a timing chip falls off), as he ends up with a great 2nd place overall individual finish.

The women's race has evidently begun. (Live timing hasn't reflected anything yet, and is still only showing the men's results.)

Still issues with the live timing for the women's race. (They DO now show it live, but they (re-)showed men's results for the 2K mark.)

Live results now fixed- 2 Buffs (Covert and McArthur) showing with an ~6 second lead at the halfway point.

Wanted to mention it will be interesting to see the official "final score" in the women's race, as live timings are a little wonky to me right now, with 12 Buffs showing as possibly contributing to the "main" team's score. (Only 7 per team are usually allowed.) IF there is still work to be done on the team scores, and if the CU coaches picked the "wrong" runners to run on the varsity team, the Buffs may end up with a narrower win, or possibly even a 2nd place finish.

Article after today's races-

"
STILLWATER, Okla. — The Colorado women's cross country team stampeded to victory at Oklahoma State's Cowboy Jamboree Saturday morning, placing seven runners in the top 12.

The Buffaloes, who are currently ranked eighth in the USTFCCCA Poll, scored 30 points in the team race with their five scoring runners all placing in the top 10. The runner-up, Oklahoma State, recorded 35 points as the No. 23 team in the country.

The men's team also did well and recorded a third-place finish behind Northern Arizona (41) and OSU. The Buffs and Cowboys both recorded 64 points but after the tiebreaker, the Buffs moved to third.

CU's men entered the meet ranked 12th overall behind top-ranked NAU and sixth-rated OSU. Tulsa was ranked higher than the Buffs heading into the race at eighth and finished fifth behind Texas, which is receiving votes in the poll.

WOMEN'S GARNET RACE:
The CU women ran a very nice race. The Buffaloes were always in the front of the pack with a group of OSU runners and just seemed to be very comfortable. CU and OSU were by far the best two teams in the field as the third-place team, Utah Valley, recorded 114 points.

"In this field, we would have been disappointed to not be very high up," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "It was not a very deep field. The Oklahoma State women were a little better than what we thought and were probably beating us with a kilometer to go but some of our women came up well on the final hills and we got the win.

"We ran times that are faster than what I expected us to, which is a little confusing because the grass is full and it was a hot day. But Coach (Heather) Burroughs and I will go home and pour over the results. Overall it was a good day. It was what we needed."

CU was led by redshirt Emily Covert for the second consecutive race. She finished third overall in 20:39.6.

"Emily has worked very hard in the last year and a half to battle back into good shape," Wetmore said. "She is not into her best yet, not the best she has in her, but her work ethic, her patience and her vision will have her in a very good place in six weeks."

The Cowboys took three of the top four places. Taylor Roe won the 6-kilometer race in 20:25.9 and Gabby Hentemann was second in 20:36.8. Behind Covert was OSU's Molly Born in fourth (20:41.1).

But five of the next six positions belonged to the Buffs. Abby Nichols, who was running her first race of the season, finished fifth (20:47.1) and India Johnson was sixth (20:54.8). Rachel McArthur crossed the finish in seventh (20:59.4) and was followed by OSU's Kelsey Ramirez, who took eighth (21:09.7) and broke up CU's pack. Kaitlyn Barthell was CU's fifth scorer, finishing ninth in 21:19.0 and Hannah Miniutti took 10th overall for the Buffs (20:20.3). Annie Hill was CU's seventh runner, finishing 12th (21:27.7).

This was the first time Johnson and Miniutti raced in uniform for the Buffs and Wetmore was happy with their performances.

"I'm very pleased with them in uniform for the first time," he said. "India is a graduate transfer student from Michigan State. She was a good runner for them and is a good runner for us. Hannah is a true freshman. We are always a little reluctant to break them out, but there is a space in our team after about eighth and we run 10 at conference, so Heather and I put our heads together and concluded it was time to suit her up. She lived up to our aspirations."

MEN'S GARNET RACE:
The men's field was tougher and despite losing the tiebreaker, it is still a good showing for the first races of the season for the CU men.

"This is a good outcome for this race," Wetmore said. "We came in as the fourth-ranked team; Oklahoma State and Tulsa were both ranked ahead of us. NAU is really good."

It was not a surprise to see Eduardo 'Lalo' Herrera leading the Buffs individually. He finished as the runner-up in the loaded field, finishing his 8k race in 23:36.8.

"He is back where he was a year ago, maybe a little bit ahead of where he was a year ago," said Wetmore. "He's been training really hard. He was patient today. The front guy is running in his hometown, so Lalo just let him go this time. They'll face each other a few more times."

Isai Rodriguez won

Finishing behind him were some new faces for the Buffs. Brendan Fraser was eighth to record a top-10 finish in 23:55.3 and Stephen Jones was 12th (24:02.1). Andrew Kent was fourth for the Buffs, finishing 20th in 24:13.1 and Charlie Sweeney rounded out CU's score, placing 23rd (24:21.8). All four made their CU cross country debuts in this race and it was a pretty good debut for each.

"Brendan Fraser was brilliant," Wetmore said. "Stephen Jones, Andrew Kent and Charlie Sweeney were good for us. There are a couple of little things to fix and we're going to be an even better team in six weeks."

UP NEXT: The Buffs will be back in action on October 15 for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.

"Now we disappear into a block of hard work," Wetmore said.

After the 1st meaningful races of the season this past Saturday, the women stay at #8 in the latest Coaches' poll, while the men move up from 12 to 8.

Article - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/9/21/cross-country-both-cu-xc-teams-ranked-eighth-in-latest-polls.aspx

"
NEW ORLEANS — After getting their first significant races of the season under their feet, the University of Colorado saw both of its cross country teams earn a No. 8 ranking in the latest edition of the USTFCCCA Division I Polls, which were released Tuesday.

The CU women have been ranked eighth since the preseason poll, while the men made their first movement in the rankings. They jumped up four spots from 12th to eighth after finishing third at the Cowboy Invitational, September 18, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Buffalo men tied Oklahoma State's men with 62 points in the team race (the results were updated Tuesday morning on TFRRS.org) however, after the tiebreaker, finished third. Northern Arizona won the meet with 40 points.
...

There was no change in the regional rankings for either team. CU's men remained third behind NAU and BYU while the women stayed fourth behind BYU, New Mexico and Northern Arizona.

Colorado's next race is the NCAA Pre-National Invitational, October 15, in Tallahassee, Fla., which is the site of the 2021 NCAA Championships.

It's the biggest regular season races this Friday, with both the men and women scheduled to send their "A" teams to Tallahassee to compete at the Pre-Nationals***, with the men's main 8K race scheduled to begin at 6:00 AM MT and the women's main 6K race beginning at 6:35 AM MT. Not sure in this case, but some of the non-varsity runners may also be in the open races, which are scheduled to begin at 7:10 AM MT (men's) and 7:34 AM MT (women's).
(***Every season, the school hosting the NCAA Championships later in the season also hosts a regular season event so that interested schools can race the Championships course (although with the regular season men's race "only" being 8K vs. the Championships' 10K, assume they aren't identical). Interestingly, these races are always the same weekend as the legendary Nuttycombe races hosted by Wisconsin, so the 2 major events both get elite fields, but neither gets ALL the top teams.)

As of now, I'm not seeing any video coverage being planned. (Hoping that may change as Flotrack is scheduled to show some High School races being held at the same place, but they say they aren't showing the college races. Hopefully that may (???) mean some stream or telecast is scheduled, but I just haven't found it yet.)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado cross country teams will face several nationally ranked programs Friday, October 15, at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State University is the host of this year's pre-national meet as the host of the NCAA Championship in November. The meet will take place at Apalachee Regional Park.

CU's men are currently ranked seventh in the USTFCCCA Division I Coaches Poll and will race in the men's 8-kilometer Garnet race at 6 a.m. MT against 39 other teams. Twelve of those teams are ranked in the top-30, while another two are receiving votes. Most notably, the poll's top two teams, Northern Arizona and Notre Dame, respectively, will be racing against the Buffs. One other team, BYU, is entered in the race that is seated higher than CU in the rankings as the Cougars are currently fifth.

The Colorado women are the highest-ranked team in the 6k garnet race, coming in at fifth in the latest poll. The next highest ranked team in the race is Pac-12 opponent Utah, which is 10th. In total there are nine ranked teams and another five receiving votes in the field of 36 teams. The women's garnet race is set to start at 6:35 a.m. MT.

There are two open races following the garnet races and the Buffaloes will have entries in each. The open men's race will start at 7:10 a.m. and the women's open race is scheduled for 7:45 a.m.

Live results for the meet are available here.
