CU Women's basketball (Last season - 21-13 overall; 9-9 in regular season conference play) opens their 2025/26 season this Thursday evening hosting the New Mexico Lobos (UNM; Last season -18-14, 11-7 in the Mountain West).

New Mexico opens their season tonight hosting Northern Arizona, which will let them get rid of some rust and butterflies before facing the Buffs, while also giving CU some film on this season's Lobos. Unlike the Buffs, it looks like New Mexico is returning a lot - namely, 4 of their 5 starters from last season (who were also 4 of their 5 top scorers). They had 2 players right around 15 points per game last season, including the one non-returner (who graduated) to this year's team. It will be interesting to see how they play, as those 4 returners as listed in their roster are not that tall (5'5", 5'8", 5'9" and 6'1").

Looking at the all-time record (per page 195 of https://cubuffs.com/documents/2025/10/28/2025-26_Colorado_WBB_Record_Book.pdf), the Buffs lead the series 8-6 overall, with UNM winning the 1st 6 and then, starting in March 1979, the Buffs have won the last 8, with the last meet-up being back in November of 2013. (All 6 of the losses were while both teams were part of an "Intermountain Conference", with the 1st Buff win in 1979 occuring during that conference's post-season tournament.)

Not that they mean much if anything, but just for a little reference - in last season's final NET rankings (for games played through 4/6/25; available at https://stats.ncaa.org/selection_rankings/nitty_gritties/43771), CU was at #56 and UNM #156.

As is scheduled throughout the season for home and conference road games, this game is scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a premium ($) subscription to that service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

The game was nip and tuck through the 1st 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter, but then CU started asserting its authority, outscoring UNM 26 (!!!)-10 the final 6 minutes of the quarter to take a 66-48 lead into the 4th quarter.

Buffs keep on working in the 4th and get the win 84-59.

Very nice start for the CU career of senior transfer (from Rhode Island) Anaëlle Dutat, who logs a SOLID double double with 16 points (on only 12 shots) and 13 rebounds while leading the team in minutes with 32 (no one else had more than 25).

Way to go Buffs!

There are some nice pieces there, it looks like we will be a solid team this year. What impress me though is the freshman class, Greer, Crook and Gooden is a very nice core group to be built on.

Buffaloes Overcome Lobos in Season Home Opener

Senior forward Anaëlle Dutat records first double-double of the season

By: Macy Mohlenkamp, Athletic Communications Associate

BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) defeated New Mexico (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West) in the Buffs' 2025-26 season home opener, 84-59, at CU Events Center on Thursday, Nov. 6.

The Buffaloes saw a slow first half and entered the third quarter leading the Lobos by one. Colorado fell into an aggressive offensive groove during the third, scoring twice as many points as New Mexico. CU carried the momentum into the fourth quarter to defeat the Lobos.

"Really proud of our team and how we played, how we competed," head coach JR Payne stated. "You never really expect the beginning to be beautiful — and it wasn't — but we made some really great adjustments at halftime, defensively in particular. What I said to the locker room is this stat sheet is like a coach's dream — to have so much balance and feel that so many different people on the team can contribute in lots of different ways, which, of course, they did. I am just really proud of how we are starting the season off."

The Buffs had an overall field-goal percentage of 45.3% and a free-throw percentage of 85.7%. Colorado held New Mexico to an overall field-goal percentage of 34.4% and 18.8% in the fourth quarter.

Great team win. Dutat and Crook stood out. Crook’s 12 pts and 7 rebounds were in 23 minutes. And she’s a true frosh….

These Buffs did not seem like this was their first game playing together. Another example of the work that this staff puts in.

9 Buffs in double digits in minutes including 4 freshmen. Also, 5 players in double figures led by transfer Anaëlle Dutat with 16.

Some positive stats for the Buffs:

Only 10 turnovers to 21 for UNM

Points off turnovers: 27-7

Rebounds: 48-36

Points in the paint: 50-24

Free Throws: 12-14 for 85.7%

The only negative was three-point shooting where CU went 4-20 for 20%. This was a concern I had coming in. They need multiple players to step up on the perimeter.

Louisville is ranked #20. They lost to UCONN a few days ago 79-66 in Annapolis, MD

Hoping the free throw % continues.

Concerned about 3 point defense. We will be facing a lot of teams who shoots lots of 3's. J's teams have yet to do a good job of defending the 3. Hopefully this team can defend the 3.

The 3pt differential is my biggest concern with this team. I worry we'll see losses where our Buffs win rebounding, turnovers and 2pt/FT shooting but get beat on long range shots.
