After last week's scheduled conference opener was cancelled, the Bay Area schools are scheduled to head to Boulder this weekend to start Pac 12 play, with a rare Saturday/ Monday combo planned. The Buffs (2-2, 0-0) are scheduled to host the #19/20 Cardinal (2-0, 1-0) on Saturday, then the Golden Bears (1-4, 0-2) on Monday.

Note - Unlike what I saw the last week or two offered for tennis and soccer, looks like lacrosse is still not letting general fans attend; it sounds like it's limited to invited family and friends of the team. (I'd guess at least one reason for this is that the sideline the fans are on at Kittredge Field are much narrower than the stands for tennis and sidelines at Prentup.)

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER — Colorado will have a second chance to open up Pac-12 Conference play this week when it plays host to a pair of league opponents.

The Buffaloes will play No. 20 Stanford on Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m. After the cancelation of their Pac-12 opener against Oregon last Friday, March 12, due to COVID-19 protocols in the Ducks' program, this will now be the conference opener.

Two days later, on March 22, Colorado will host California at 2 p.m. It will be the first game for CU broadcast live on Pac-Networks this season.

Both games will be played at Kittredge Field.

The game against the Cardinal will be streamed live on CUBuffs.com; links to the stream and live stats for both games are available on the lacrosse schedule page.

Colorado (2-2) is fresh off a 14-5 win against San Diego State. The two faced off on March 14 and saw Sadie Grozier and Charlie Rudy each record five goals in the win. They are tied for the team lead with 13 goals apiece, but Grozier has a team-best 16 points with three assists, while Rudy has one assist for 14 points. Julia Lisella has played all 241:15 minutes in net. She has an 8.70 goals against average and a 52.7 save percentage.

ABOUT STANFORD: The Cardinal is 2-0, 1-0 Pac-12, with wins this season against UC-Davis (16-9) and Arizona State (15-9). SU is currently tied for 20th in the IWLCA Poll.

Ali Baiocco has a team-best 12 goals this season, as well as 16 points through two games. Jay Browne has handed out five assists to lead SU and has four goals. The Cardinal has used two goalkeepers this season, each playing a full 60:00. Trudie Grattan allowed 10 goals and made 10 saves, while Kara Rahaim has allowed eight goals and has seven saves.

THE SERIES: Stanford owns a slight 8-6 lead in the all-time series against the Buffs, which includes a 3-2 record in Boulder. The last time the two teams met in Boulder, the Cardinal outlasted CU in overtime, 13-12.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA: The Bears are 1-4 this season, which includes a 0-1 mark in conference games. The win was against Fresno State (14-12). There is a common opponent between Cal and CU as both have played San Diego State. CU defeated SDSU 14-5 on March 14, while Cal lost 12-1 on Feb. 28.

Quinnlyn Mason has recorded 14 goals through five games and has two assists for 16 points. Marissa Kuberra and Megan Mix each have eight goals. In goal, Riley Drullinger has played 262:28 minutes. She has a 16.46 goals against average and a 41.0 save percentage.

THE SERIES: The Buffaloes lead the all-time series 6-2. The Bears won the first two meetings in 2014 and 15, but since then, it has been all CU.

HOME ATTENDANCE POLICY: Colorado lacrosse attendance at Kittredge Field is limited to player and coaches families in accordance with NCAA and PAC-12 spectator policies. All other spectators will be prohibited from attending on-site. The game will be streamed for free and can be found at CUBuffs.com.

UP NEXT: The Buffs head out on the road for the first time since their first two games of the season. CU will first head to Los Angeles to take on Southern California on March 26. Then the Buffs will head to Tempe, Ariz. for a contest against Arizona State on March 28.

Just started watching this one after the soccer match, and it looks like the defense and goalies are winning so far, as it's only 1-2 Cardinal with around 10 minutes left in the 1st half. (Stanford did recently have a goal disallowed due to a stick violation.)

Edit- and frosh Stokes ties it up at 2 for the Buffs with around the 9 minutes left in the half.

It's 6-4 Buffs with ~22 minutes left, even after they've turned it over the last 3 times in the offensive zone.

(I'm heading off to visit with family, so won't be able to post the rest of the game.)

This one was close for most of the 1st half (tied 3 all with around 10 minutes to go), but the Buffs score the last 6 to take a 9-3 lead into the half.

Keep up the confident intensity Buffs!

The Buffs continue to keep the lead, although Cal finally scored a couple goals recently after a long draught- it's 12-5 with around 22 minutes still left.

There is a personal school record alert on this one, as Charlie Rudy already has 7 goals, and the school record is 8 (for one game, co-held right now by Rudy and Kiernan).

Buffs get the win 15-5!!!

(Charlie Rudy didn't get another goal, so ended with 7. This was partially because she earned a yellow card and was on the penalty chair for 2 minutes, and then Coach Whidden was able to give her bench players some game experience for AT MINIMUM the last 5 minutes or so, so Rudy wasn't on the field for quite awhile during "garbage time".)

BOULDER – Colorado recorded a season-high 15 goals on Monday as it recorded its first Pac-12 win of the season, defeating California 15-5 at Kittredge Field.

The Buffaloes (3-3, 1-1 Pac-12) were led by junior Charlie Rudy's seven goals, but she wasn't the only one putting in the work as five other Buffs scored goals in the win. Ashley Stokes tallied her first hat-trick with three goals and Bailey Hawkins had a pair of markers. Devon Bayer, Zoe Lawless and Sydney Zimmerman each added a goal for CU to give the Buffs a great offensive edge.

But it wasn't just offense where the Buffs did well. CU really limited Cal's opportunities. The Bears only recorded three goals in the first half, compared to nine for CU. Cal took 10 shots in that first frame and while three made it on net, three were stopped by CU's goalkeeper Julia Lisella and the other six were not on goal.

"I thought we did a good job defensively, again strong 1-1 defense down there to limit Cal," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "Offensively, we did a better job sticking to the plan but we have to clean things up and get a bit more dynamic as we head into this weekend."

The second half was very similar with Cal recording 12 shots, but once again the Buffs shut the Bears down, allowing only two goals. Lisella made six saves, totaling nine for the game for a 60.0 save percentage.

"I think consistency and Julia go together," Whidden said. "You know what you are going to get from Julia on a daily basis. Sometimes you get a lot more than you expect and I think you saw that on Saturday and I think you saw that again today."
...

KEY STAT: Rudy was close to tying her career-high of eight goals, which doubles as the school record, but was able to rest on the sidelines while Whidden was able to let some other players get some valuable playing time, which will bode well for CU as the season wears on.

"The way we and the way our conference is playing, we need more girls to step up so that we can finish games strong and with energy," Whidden said. "We struggled a little bit with that against Stanford. Today was a day where we wanted to get some more of our players in there because we are going to need them after playing two games in a weekend and in a year where we haven't been playing very much."

NOTABLE:
  • Charlie Rudy has scored in 11 straight games dating back to the season opener of the 2020 season.
  • Sadie Grozier has recorded at least one point in each of CU's six games this season.
  • Colorado has scored a man-up goal in five of six games this season.
  • The Buffs have now won the last seven meetings against Cal and own the all-time series 7-2.
  • CU cleared at 100%. The Buffs were 14-14 in the first half and were 11-11 in the second half.
