In a way it seems like the season is pretty young (to me anyways), but it's already Senior Day weekend for the lax Buffs (3-5, 1-3), as they look to finish their home schedule STRONG by hopefully competing hard and getting wins over the Trojans (6-3, 3-1) and Sun Devils (7-2, 4-1), both of whom defeated the Buffs at their schools' last weekend. (CU's regular season ends with 4 straight road games..)

(Note - Unlike some of the other CU sports (tennis and, to some extent, soccer spring to mind), per the below preview article no general fans are allowed to view either of these games live. (As I wrote previously, I'm GUESSING this may be because of the pretty narrow sidelines on the spectator side of Kittredge Field.?.))

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER — Although there is over one month until the Pac-12 Conference Tournament, May 5-8, the Colorado lacrosse team will wrap up its home schedule this week at Kittredge Field with a pair of rematches against conference opponents Southern California and Arizona State.

First up, the Buffs (3-5, 1-3 Pac-12) will face USC (6-3, 3-1) on Friday, April 2, at 1 p.m. That game will be streamed for free at CUBuffs.com.

Then on Sunday, April 4, CU will take on ASU (7-2, 4-1), which is also slated for a 1 p.m. opening draw. It will be televised live on Pac-12 Network with Justin Adams providing the play-by-play.

Colorado faced each of these teams last week on the road, suffering losses to both. CU played USC first in L.A. on March 26, and despite a career-high five goals from Zoe Lawless, the Buffs fell 18-12 at McAlister Field. On March 28, Charlie Rudy led CU with seven goals as ASU defeated the Buffs, 16-11, at Sun Devil Stadium.
...

SENIOR DAY: Colorado will honor its 10 seniors and one graduate student on Sunday, April 4, following the game against Arizona State. Those players who will be recognized are Devon Bayer, Eliza Cahill, Anna Collawn, Haley Farella, Sadie Grozier, Zoe Lawless, Julia Lisella, Macaul Mellor, Kate White, Madi Wifall and Aine Williams.

HOME ATTENDANCE POLICY: Colorado lacrosse attendance at Kittredge Field is limited to player and coaches families in accordance with NCAA and PAC-12 spectator policies. All other spectators will be prohibited from attending on-site.

ABOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: The Trojans are currently third in the conference standings after the halfway point with a 3-1 mark. Like CU, they had one game canceled due to COVID-19 protocols, that being against Stanford.

USC ranks in the NCAA top 10 for draw controls per game (17.22, 5th) and Maddie McDaniel's 10.56 draw controls per game leads the country. Through nine games, Izzy McMahon leads USC with 26 points (13g, 13a) and is coming off back-to-back hat trick games. Kelsey Huff has 22 points (17g, 5a) and is third on the team with 14 draw controls.

Ella Heaney tops all Trojans with 20 goals and leads the league with a .667 shot percentage (seventh nationally). Lizzy Wagner leads field players with 18 ground balls and has been disruptive on the crease with 11 caused turnovers. Goalie Riley Hertford leads the team with 23 ground balls. In goal, she is averaging a 42.4 save percentage and has allowed 11.95 goals against.

THE SERIES: USC leads the all-time series 8-3, but the series is tied 2-2 in Boulder. CU won the very first meeting between the two teams in Boulder, which was a 12-11 overtime victory. The Buffs also won a 10-7 decision against the Trojans on April 6, 2018. The last time the two met in Boulder was on March 16, 2019. USC took that game 11-5, but CU won the following game in L.A. on April 5, 2019 (9-8), splitting the 2019 series.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE: The Sun Devils are currently second behind Stanford in the Pac-12 standings. ASU is 4-1, while the Cardinal is 4-0 as it had its game against USC canceled on March 14.

There are three Sun Devils who have recorded 20 or more goals and eight who have recorded 10 or more goals this season. Carley Adams leads the way with 34, while Kerri Clayton has scored 22. Emily Glagolev ranks third on the team with 20. The Sun Devils are averaging 17.6 goals per game which leads the Pac-12 and are holding their opponents to 11.6 per game. Berkeley Bonneau has played 513:46 minutes in nine games. In that time, she has allowed 99 goals and has made 87 saves for a 46.8 save percentage.

THE SERIES: CU owns a 4-1 mark in the all-time series against ASU as the Sun Devils won their first game against the Buffs on March 28, 2021. Prior to that meeting, the Buffs had not lost to ASU since ASU had become a Division I program.

UP NEXT: The Buffs head to the Bay Area for a pair of games against Stanford and California. CU will first meet up with Stanford on April 9 before playing Cal on April 11.

Looks like a great comeback W for the Buffs, as they were down 5-8 at the half and, I believe, 6-11 at one point in the 2nd, but then score the last 7 to defeat the Trojans 13-11!!!!

BOULDER – Down 11-6 with 25:42 to play in the second half, the Colorado lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals to finish the game and upended USC 13-11 on Friday afternoon.

"Our team has been in this situation time and time again, and we made our way partway back and we hadn't been able to finish since the beginning of the season at Louisville, this has been a theme for us," Colorado coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "It's about them going out there and actually making the plays at the moment, them trusting each other and themselves, and being aggressive. I thought when we did that we did well on both ends of the field and we need to be able to do that consistently."

CU moved its senior recognition to after the game Friday and whether it served as extra motivation or not, the seniors were a huge part of the comeback, playing a part in six of the seven goals in the 7-0 run. Sadie Grozier recorded three goals and one assist in that span, while Zoe Lawless had two goals.

Overall, Grozier led both teams with five goals and had six points with her assist. Lawless recorded three goals and freshman Morgan Pence added two goals, including the game-winner on a free-position opportunity.

And then there was the strong play in the second half by CU's defense, holding the Trojans to just 10 shots and only seven of those got on goal. Julia Lisella stopped four, while only three made it through.

"We have a huge senior class with 11 and they are such a huge part of this team, leadership, and talent-wise," Whidden said. "When they come to play, when they get confident, and when they believe in themselves, they are really good. When we struggle a little bit with the confidence piece we struggle a little bit as a team. We came out here today focused, they were able to get energy from each other, and again when the confidence builds when we are aggressive, we are a pretty good team."

This is the first time since March 9, 2018, that the Buffs have comeback after being down by seven goals. The last time was against Stanford and the Buffs won that game 18-16.

Colorado improves to 4-5 overall and is 2-3 in Pac-12 play while USC is now 6-4, 3-2.
...

KEY STATS: Colorado's draw control put the team in a position to control this game. CU won 12 draw controls, compared to USC's 14, but was an improvement from last weekend.

"Last weekend we struggled at USC, we struggled at ASU, we knew we had to get better," Whidden said. "Nicole works with them a lot and on strategy. I think we have competitors, I think Kate Burnside is a competitor, she learns from the previous games, she learns about the draw and she comes out there with confidence and competes. I thought our circle people did well as well and that was huge for us."

BOULDER — A sound defensive effort and hat tricks from three different players led the University of Colorado women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 win over No. 20 Arizona State here in an Easter Sunday match at CU's on-campus Kittredge Field.

The win avenged a 16-11 loss to the Sun Devils in Tempe last Sunday, ASU's first-ever win over the Buffaloes. Colorado evened its records overall (5-5) and in Pac-12 play (3-3) with the win, and in the process snapped Arizona State's five-game winning streak, as ASU fell to 7-3 (4-2 in conference games).

The Sun Devils, the nation's second-leading offensive team (17.6 per), were held to their third-lowest goal total of the season, also getting eight fewer shots on goal – 20 – than their season average.

Senior Sadie Grozier led the Buffs with four goals, while senior Zoe Lawless and junior Liz Phillips each scored three times. Junior Chloe Willard had two goals and three assists, matching Grozier's point total of five. They helped Colorado match its most goals this season, previously done in a 15-5 win over California last month.

Arizona State, ranked 108th out of 109th in the nation in fouls committed coming into Sunday (33.9 per game) and had 44 fouls in the first game with the Buffs, committed 23 in the first half (and 38 for the game). Near the end of the first half, ASU was called for its final foul of the half, which proved costly. It drew a second yellow card for its third-leading scorer, Kerri Clayton, giving the Buffs a man advantage down the stretch of the first 30 minutes.

CU capitalized on the call with a goal from freshman Morgan Pence, who scored her fifth goal of her collegiate career with 13 seconds left in the half that gave Colorado a 7-6 lead at halftime. The Sun Devils would never regain the lead, though after CU built a 9-6 advantage, ASU did get within one goal one more time at 11-10.

Draw controls played a role in the outcome; Arizona State, one of the better teams in the nation at winning a majority of those, while Colorado is down the line; ASU had a 20-9 edge the first time they met. But this time around, the Buffs won those battles by 16-12.

Next up for the Buffaloes is the annual San Francisco Bay Area swing, with games at Stanford (Friday, 6 p.m. MDT) and at California (Sunday, 1 p.m. MDT). The Stanford contest will be carried live on the Pac-12 Networks.

NOTES: There are eight seniors and one graduate on the CU roster … Colorado leads the series with Arizona State by a 5-1 count (outscoring the Sun Devils 74-31) and is now 3-2 on Easter Sunday (three straight wins) … The game time temperature was 75 degrees … Colorado had 20 fouls called on it, or 18 less than ASU, with had seven yellow cards to CU's five (the latter all in the first half) … Alan Roach was the game's special public address announcer; related to senior Madi Wifall (her father is his cousin), he's the PA voice of the Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and every Super Bowl since 2007 that didn't involve the Denver Broncos (13 in all) … CU's five wins have been by a combined 32 goals, while its five losses have been by a total of 16 goals, including a pair of one-loss overtime setbacks … Ann Elliott-Whidden, CU's only head coach in its eight-year history, is now 84-45 overall, which includes a 46-16 mark in conference play (21-6 in the Pac-12) and 70-5 when leading at halftime (4-1 in 2021) … After the Bay Area road trip, CU's remaining games are April 23 at Oregon to wrap up Pac-12 play, and a non-league affair at Denver on April 29.
