CU Men's basketball (7-0) tries to keep its season opening win streak going as it has one home and one road game scheduled in the coming week. 1st off, this coming Monday the Cal Baptist Lancers (CBU; 6-0) head to Boulder for a game scheduled to start at 7:00 PM MT. That's followed up with a short ride to the northeast for a tilt with the Colorado State Rams (CSU; 6-2) Saturday (12/6) in Ft. Collins beginning at 3:00 PM MT.

Not that they mean much if anything, but just for a little reference - in last season's final NET rankings (for games played through 4/7/25; available at https://stats.ncaa.org/selection_rankings/nitty_gritties/43833), CU was at #87, CBU was #174 and CSU #42. In this season's VERY EARLY Massey ratings (https://masseyratings.com/cb/ncaa-d1/ratings ), CU is at #35 , CBU #102 and CSU #75, while Pomeroy (https://kenpom.com/) has the teams at #'s 65, 138 and 68, respectively.

As is true for many home games (especially in the pre-season), The Monday game is scheduled to be available on an ESPN+ stream. Meanwhile, the CSU game Saturday is slotted for the CBS Sports Network. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Cal Baptist #138 KenPom, but looks very competitive.
Tad mentioned several times post-game, that we need to get the fans out supporting the team. Students should be back

Cal Baptist has a very short bench though, and had 2 starters play all 40 minutes against OSU, and a third play 37. CU should be rested, and motivated. Hopefully Tad gets to the bench early, and plays a more uptempo game than he likes. I know defense and rebounding travel, but CU is home, play fast early, and capitalize on Cal's travel, our altitude, and their short turnaround.

Bummed we can't make this one, hope it's a good, loud environment Monday!

Anybody have any idea why the line moved 2 pts in 12 hours. Was -10.5, now -12.5. And I don't need the cheeky "Because people bet it" BS answers. Thanks.

Since the women's team is not going to have a great year, I will jump on the Tad bandwagon. Watched the last game and will watch this one tonight. Go Buffs
The main difference is the PG play. Tad grabbed one of the best PGs from the portal while JR Payne failed to do so. I still think the women's team got a pretty promising freshman class, they will be competitive if JR get a good PG from portal next year.

Betting account is getting low. Bet Buffs will be ahead by less than 5.5 at the half.
I think we'll win by 3 - 5.

Game day!

THE BUFFALOES: Colorado is 7-0 for the first time in six years after claiming the 2025 Acrisure Holiday Classic title in Palm Desert, Calif. The Buffaloes defeated San Francisco in the first game, 79-69 on Nov. 27, and then just over 24 hours later defeated former conference rival Washington, 81-68, for its ninth multi-team event preseason tournament and first since 2019-20.

Overall the seven-game winning streak is Colorado's best since an eight-game run at the tail end of the 2023-24 season where the Buffaloes set the single-school record for wins with 26. Colorado will be looking for its first 8-0 start to a season since 1949-50.
...

ABOUT THE LANCERS: California Baptist is 7-0, the best start to a season in the program's NCAA Division I era. CBU started off a five-game road trip in fine fashion, defeating Oregon State, 75-69 on Nov. 29. The Lancers will also face BYU and Utah on this trip. CBU averages 75.4 points on 45 percent shooting. The Lancers are one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, ranking fourth in the country in rebounding margin (+14.3) and 17th in offensive rebounds at 15.0 per game. CBU allows 63 points per game, ranking 18th in the nation.

Graduate guard Dominique Daniels Jr leads California Baptist at 17.8 points and 4.5 assists per game. Senior guard Martel Williams averages 15.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Williams led the Lancers against Oregon State with 19 points. CBU has five players averaging at least five rebounds per game led by Thomas Ndong (7.3 rpg) and Jonathan Griman (7.0 rpg).

THE SERIES: This will be the first meeting between Colorado and California Baptist.

Another Surprisingly Tough Opponent Tonight! Cal Baptist: KenPom#130/AdjustD#97/4th in Rbding Margin/18th in Pts Allowed; Good Size (3 guys 6'10+ average 6-7 Rbds; plus 3 guards average 4-5 Rbds/each) & recent improvement in shooting. 5 of their 7 Seniors or Grad students are in guard rotation. But as noted above: Guards Play Heavy Minutes, So Maybe Vulnerable to Mile High Pace? From "other games" post:

Deep Dive on Big12 KenPom Rankings:
-Top-7 NCAA Tourney locks?:
Iowa St #4/AdjustedD#3/AdjustedO#15; Frosh: Toure is European Guard playing great & 2 Bigs that fit system better than recent Bigs.
Houston #7/D#2/O#32; Frosh PtG Flemings Injured; lack quality depth; but Coach Sampson seems OK w/ primarily 7 man rotation.
'Zona #9/D#11/O#9; May finally have elite D? Most Frosh dependent team: 2 starters & 4 in Top 8-man rotation. Best Front Court in US?
BYU #12/D#22/O#6; 3 Frosh behind Dybantsa & Keita in frontcourt. Can Kevin Young maintain D as good as O/Recruiting-like Tommy Lloyd?
KU #20/D#9/O#52; Surprisingly good guard-play depth; w/ Frosh PtG Peterson & 1 other guard Injured; Frosh: Tiller learning PF & 2 W/Fs.

-Seem a little vulnerable:
Tx Tech #22/D31/&O#30; Inconsistent D & Guard Play; Soph PtG Anderson may need decision-making help? Miss Injured 6'8 Mosley; 6'11's Soph Bamgboye & Frosh Akuentok only front-court depth behind Toppin. 6'6 225 Watts not the small-ball 4-man Darrion Williams was.
Baylor #25/D#76/O#13/ SOS#31-Tough!; Current 7-Man Rotation W/ 3 Injured; Rataj is 6'8, 230 pounds & listed as Guard starts at 5 & Powell off the bench only real size now; 2 Front Court injuries may not extend bench to 10? But 6'11 Bodo Bodo may make 8 or 9 man-rotation?

-Lot of teams w/ arguments to be in NCAA Bubble Convo? NonCon to clarify more, or wait for Jan. upsets? 1-2 more bids? Ok-St Favorite?
TCU #50/Adj.D#15-Tough!/Adj.O#102; Playing D! More girth than height: Start 6'8 245 Edmonds; 6'7 246 Punch; & 6'7 225 Lelevicius. W/ 6'6 232 pound wing Robinson off the bench; With C Malick Diallo out for season, have used 6'10 216 CC-Transfer Salatchoum in spot-minutes.
Ok-St #52/O#58/D#59//AdjTempo#4; Great Pace & Balance, between D&O, & balanced team scoring; shooting at every spot. Go 10-12 deep; Front Court D may be big weakness: 3 slower-footed Bigs.+6'8 210 Coleman 4th F. Best Interior-defender is 11th-man 6'7 230 Jennings.
K-St #54/Tempo#16/O#46/D#91/SOS#62; Paced O & 3Pt strong; Inconsistent/especially D; Big Wings; Only True Big 7'2 254 Buca off bench.
UCF #60/O#37/D#115/Tempo#120; 90-Pt scoring games; Good size & shooting. But weak D & turn-overs? Johnny Dawkins to save his job?
CU #62/O#39/D#105/Tempo#165; Obviously Improved D key; Elite Passing/3Pt/Ball-Care/2nd Unit Pace/Interior Passing-especially Rancik.
Opponents: CSU#68/O#20; Standford#88/O#109/D#78/Pace#72; Washington#57/O#70/D#49; Providence#73/O#56/Pace#12; SanFran#92

-These 2 Elite-D teams need to show more consistent production; not sure they can go .500 in league?
Cinci #70/D#6/Tempo#49; Miss Jizzle James' 3Pt, as Day Day Thomas only guard hitting 3Pt. Baba Miller Injured, Thiam/Miller/Abaev great starting front court+McKinely off-bench. 4th Big Dzellat needs time? Shorter bench didn't stop loss to East. Michigan; Wes Miller hot seat?
WV #74/D#34- new coach Ross Hodge seems similar to mentor DeVries: wants tough, gritty, D-1st guys. Good start w/ this team & recruits.

-Start Recruiting for next year!
ASU #84/O#64; Improved O (2nd year) for D-minded coach, & now better-fitting Bigs, May Be Too Little/Too Late to save Hurley's job?
Utah #123; Can't see new coach Alex Jensen staying down for too long; as a player he was tough & Hi-IQ; wants similar high character/ family culture; D-first; NBA-style, free-flowing, paced O, w/ lots of passing & cutting. Learned under 1 of best to do it: Rick Majerus.

Tad on KOA saying Malone is doing the upper classman leadership role, strong voice, getting the guys going. Says Dak is right behind him and developing that leadership.

also saying rebounding will be key. They lead the nation in defensive rebounding and avg 15 O rebounds

Since the women's team is not going to have a great year, I will jump on the Tad bandwagon. Watched the last game and will watch this one tonight. Go Buffs

My favorite thing about college basketball is every year we play at least one team that I’ve never heard of before

Whoever guarded Elijah for them on his first basket looks like he's not going to be able to handle him tonight. Their guards look fairly good to me thought.

Poor crowd showing again. Really a bummer. I try to leave my bias at the door on this one, but I fully believe that RG’s pure neglect and dismantling of the student relationship with basketball is a big part of this. Bball tickets are typically pretty reasonable. And soooo many of the students that graduate from CU stay in the Denver area. Not getting drawn into the sport while at school for the last 12 years is probably at least 80,000 potential fans RG never worked to gain.

Cal Baptist has one legit dude. One. The rest of the team is out here to set picks and get rebounds and they are just fine with that.
