Games thread- MEN'S BBALL opens Pac 12 play hosting ASU (Thursday, 12/1/22, 6:30 PM MT) & visiting Washington (Sunday, 1:00 PM MT)

On basketball….

In crunch time, I want KJ, Lovering and Hadley on the court. The other two spots can go to whomever is playing well but those three are required from now on. They’re the only ones that don’t terrify me on defense right now and it hits a new level.

The Tad lineup thing… I’m sure there’s a reason he’s doing this but hell if I can figure it out. I’m guessing he’s hoping that someone steps up and rises to the occasion but yeah… might be time to start pruning the rotation down. And I’d start with the Ivies honestly.
This, absolutely this.

Going forward I'd divvy out PT along these lines:

Starters (in order of court time)
Simpson
DaSilva
Hadley
Lovering
Gabiddon (lesser of 2 Ivy evils)

Bench (in order of appearance and court time)
O'Brien
Hammond
Ruffin
Clifford
Wright

I do feel for Tad a bit. I'm positive he thought he'd get WAAAAAAAY more from that second group than he is.

Wright is our best 3 point shooter. We need all the scoring we can get.

Wright doesn't do anything else well, besides shoot the 3. He gives more back on defense and failed driving attempts than he gives us on 3s.
It's give and take at this point. We don't have 5 guys that can play good offense and good defense. And Wrights role should be 3 pt specialist, I agree he's doing too much.

I'm thinking this is a must win game. Weird so early in the season. Very worried about our mental state. They are playing very solid basketball and we have demons up there. Thinking this is where the W/L back and forth streak ends.

Preview in front of tomorrow's game up at Udub - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/12/3/mens-basketball-buffs-head-to-washington-for-pac-12-showdown.aspx

THE SEASON: Colorado is 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-12 Conference after dropping its league opener with a heart-breaking 60-59 decision to Arizona State at the CU Events Center on Dec. 1.

The Buffaloes had a 15-point lead at halftime but a season-high 20 turnovers and cold shooting in the second half snapped Colorado's five-year run of winning its conference home opener. Colorado scored just 21 points in the second half, shooting 29 percent from the field and 56 percent from the foul line in the final 20 minutes.

The loss snapped a 30-game home winning streak for the Buffaloes when holding their opponent to 60 points or less dating back to a 56-54 setback to Utah on Jan. 8, 2016.

Colorado followed a win with a loss for the fourth time this season. The Buffaloes haven't put together back-to-back wins since the final game of the 2021-22 regular season (at Utah) and quarterfinal of the Pac-12 Tournament (Oregon) – a span of 10 contests.

Colorado is averaging 72.4 points per game, ranking fourth in the Pac-12. The Buffaloes are shooting 42 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range. Colorado is allowing 68.3 points per game, ranking second-to-last in the Pac-12. Opponents are shooting just above 40 percent. Colorado is second in the Pac-12 in steals, recording nearly nine per contest.
...

ABOUT THE HUSKIES: Washington is 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-12. Similar to Colorado, the Huskies were edged by one point in their opener, falling 66-65 at Oregon State. Washington's defense has been strong, holding opponents to 64 points per game on 38.7 shooting. Only one opponent - Cal Baptist - has reached 70 points against Washington this season. The Huskies are third in the Pac-12 in scoring defense and 3-point defense (.259) and second in blocked shots (6.4 bpg). Offensively, Washington averages 69.8 points while shooting 44 percent from the field.

Senior forward Keion Brooks, Jr., leads Washington at 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, ranking in the top six in the Pac-12 in both categories. Freshman guard Keyon Menifield averages 9.9 points and has a team-best 12 3-point field goals, primarily off the bench. Junior center Franck Kepnang averages 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds and ranks third in the Pac-12 at 1.9 blocks per game.

SERIES RECORDS: This will be the 34th meeting between Colorado and Washington with the Huskies holding an 19-14 advantage. The teams split their series last year with both winning at home. Washington has won 13 of 15 all-time meetings in Seattle, including the last six. Colorado's last win at Alaska Airlines arena was a 64-47 decision on Mar. 5, 2015.

Yeah. And i hate we're in the position so early.

Think a lot of CU fans are going to be distracted by the football news and I'm feeling compelled to double my energy that goes to supporting the hoops team at this crucial junction.

Figured the zone would be a problem 4 us but playing so tenative and sloppy. No one playing plus minutes except Hadley. And Wash playing w/o 2 starters. But hey Prime Time!

Watch - we'll let Meah play 7+ minutes with 4 fouls and dominate the paint - cause we refuse to attempt to foul anyone out

Can't make free throws
Can't inbound the ****ing ball
Won't foul out their big
Can't beat a zone. Again.

I knew this was going to happen. Even made some coin on it. That said, we have 4 players on this team that are worth a sh!t. In the spirit of Coach Prime, at the end of the year I wouldn't blame Tad for cutting up to 6 players and starting fresh with the incoming Frosh and 3-4 transfers. Some of these dudes just don't have it. Tad signing the 2 Ivys and not getting a legit forward to partially replace Battey is one of his biggest blunders since he got here.

Allen and the Wake Forest euro would have made this a very different looking team

also, surprised no one has mentioned the loss of Key yet. the sum of the parts of the Ivys are not making up for his production

Key's production isn't what's missing

Leadership is what's missing.

No one is in charge of this team, and that includes Tad.

No one takes any ownership in the complete crap product being put on the court. No one is willing to step up and say 'not on my ****ing watch"

TDS is a joke of senior leadership, and the ivy's don't play enough to lead anything.

KJ apparently idolizes Iverson, cause as long as he gets his, don't ****ing care about winning.

LL only person even attempting to lead, and ****ing Tad leaves him on the bench for the last 10 mins of every ****ing game

Understandable frustration and criticism probably, albeit maybe a little too harsh.
This has obviously surprised Tad too, but its his job to right the ship somehow and soon. I hate the zone but it worked for W, and last night USC switched to it in 2nd half to come back to shut down a decent OSU lead to win. Apparently with few exceptions, like Hadley, KJ, (LL maybe) no one is sitting themselves apart from anyone else still. Thats why we have such a looked rotation.

The only thing here I disagree with is KJ.
