BOULDER — After two weeks on the road, the Colorado lacrosse team is back at home this weekend to close out the first half of Pac-12 Conference play against Stanford and California at Kittredge Field.

The Buffaloes host Stanford on Friday, March 25, at 4 p.m. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Network. Then on Sunday, March 27, Colorado hosts Cal at 1 p.m. That game will be streamed live on Pac-12 Plus.

ABOUT COLORADO: The Buffs are 6-2, 1-2 in Pac-12 play. They are receiving votes in the latest IL Women/IWLCA DI Coaches Poll and the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
...

ABOUT STANFORD: The Cardinal is 5-4 overall and leads the Pac-12 with a 3-0 record. Stanford is ranked No. 24 in the latest IL Women/IWLCA DI Poll and is No. 18 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll. SU started the season 1-4 but then strung together four straight wins, including wins last weekend over Arizona State (19-11) and USC (15-14, OT).

Ashley Humphrey leads the team with 56 points, the fourth-best total in the nation. She has recorded 42 assists (4.67) which leads the NCAA and has 14 goals this season. Annabel Frist is second in point (30) and leads the Cardinal with 25 goals. She is also the team leader in draw controls with 36.

In net, Kara Rahaim has started in all nine games, playing in 491:21 minutes. She has allowed 94 goals while making 84 saves. Her 11.97 goals-against average ranks third in the Pac-12, while her 0.463 save percentage leads the conference.

THE SERIES: Stanford has a 10-6 lead in the all-time series against the Buffs. The Cardinal won both meetings between the two last year. The first game between both teams on March 20, 2021, went to overtime in Boulder. The Buffs lead 9-8 with under a minute to play in regulation. But a turnover by CU with 46 seconds to go gave Stanford the ball back and the Cardinal scored with 22 seconds left on the clock to force overtime. SU scored three minutes into the OT period to win the game, 10-9.

The second meeting in the regular season was canceled due to Covid-19 protocols within the Cardinal program, but the two did meet again in the championship game of the Pac-12 Tournament, May 8, in Stanford, Calif. Stanford won that game, 18-10.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA: The Bears enter the weekend 0-9 and are 0-3 in conference play. They will take on Oregon on Friday, March 25 before heading to Boulder to face the Buffs on March 27. Last weekend they lost to USC (9-19) and played a close game against Arizona State (18-21).

Liz Scott is the leading scoring for Cal with 20 goals and two assists. Amanda Morse is second with 13 goals while Maya Lawliss has scored 11 goals this season. Catherine Roxas and Kennedy Goss have combined for 55 draw controls. Roxas has a team-best 30 while Goss has the second most with 25.

Riley Drulinger has seen action in all nine of Cal's games in net. She has made 69 saves while allowing 144 goals in 472:58 minutes.

THE SERIES: CU owns an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series against Cal. The Bears won the first two meetings between the two programs, but since then, it has been all Buffs. CU won the first meeting in Boulder last season on March 22, 15-4, but the second time the two met in Berkeley, Calif., on April 11, the game was closer, 12-10.

WEEKEND PROMOTIONS: Colorado's game against Stanford on March 25 is the Buffs' annual One Love game for the One Love Foundation. One Love Foundation is a national non-profit organization with the goal of ending relationship abuse. It empowers young people with the tools and resources they need to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities. On Sunday, March 27, against Cal, fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game.

BOULDER – Sam McGee scored four goals on Friday as the University of Colorado lacrosse team upset No. 24 Stanford, 17-16, at Kittredge Field.

Charlie Rudy and Chloe Willard added three goals apiece in the win and Grace Donnelly made nine saves, including a crucial save with 42 seconds left in the game, to give the Buffs their second ranked win of the season.

"For us to come out here today and execute against a really good team in a game we knew we had to win here at home, I'm really proud of all of (the players) for what they contributed offensively, defensively, and throughout," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said.

It was CU's first home win against Stanford since 2018 (18-16). In 2019 and 2021, the Buffs fell to the Cardinal in Boulder by one goal in each game.

"Towards the end, you're trying to focus on the here and now but I'm aware that the last couple of games we've had here (against Stanford) have gone to overtime," Whidden said. "(The past two games) haven't gone our way and we've had leads. For us to be able to hang on, I'm really proud of (the players)."
...

"Stanford did a great job of fighting until the end," Whidden said. "They came back. Their best players were playing well. For a second, we lost a little bit of confidence. For us to come back and make the stops we needed to a man down, I'm proud of that. We did a good job at the end when we needed to. They kept believing in themselves."

With the team coming off a 1-2 stretch in road games against USC, Arizona State and Oregon, Whidden was happy with the way her team executed throughout the game.

"After the last two weekends, we needed to get some confidence and momentum back," Whidden said. I think we did that here today. Now, we have to continue to build off it because no game is going to be easy for us in this conference. Every game is as important as the next, so this was a good win for us. We've got to keep this going if we want to be where we want to be at the end of the season."

Colorado is now 7-2 (2-2 Pac-12), while is Stanford 5-5 (3-1 Pac-12).
...

NOTEWORTHY: Sam McGee's four goals in the games were a career-high.

UP NEXT: The Buffaloes play Cal at Kittredge Field Sunday before they go to the Bay Area for contests at Stanford (April 1) and Cal (April 3).

"Cal's a good team," Whidden said. "Their record doesn't show that they are a good team. They have good players, and they play hard in the Pac-12 and compete. We're going to enjoy this (win) for a little bit. The (players) need to enjoy it after a couple of tough weeks we had on the road and build their confidence. We will get refocused tomorrow on Cal. We know this win means nothing if we can't win on Sunday. We know winning at home is important. We see these guys again next weekend at their place, so we've got to take care of business here. We'll make sure we're refocused and ready to go."

nice win. Really need to work on not letting teams back in games. Nice save at the end by Grace D.

It was 5-2 after the 1st, and the Buffs have added the next 4 to go up 9-2 with -10 minutes left in the half.

Grozier already has 5 goals.

This one got a little nervy for awhile, as Cal got within 4 with over 10 minutes remaining, but CU scores the last 2 to GET THE WIN 16-10.

Way to go BUFFS!

Very useful weekend.

Same teams at their place next week, right?

Yep. Big Friday game upcoming @ Stanford, followed up with a Sunday game in Berkeley. At the halfway point of conference play, the Buffs, at 3-2, are tied with ASU in the Pac 12 standings, and 1 game behind USC and the Trees,

After next weekend, CU's final 3 conference games are all in Boulder. After conference play and before the Pac tourney, the Buffs still have a BIG game for NCAA Tourney purposes (at least for at-large selection purposes) as they are scheduled to go to and play #6/9 ranked Denver on 4/27. (It will be interesting to see where the Buffs stand when the 1st RPI ratings are released for the season, which I assume should be within a week or two.)

BOULDER – Sadie Grozier scored six goals for the Buffaloes as the University of Colorado lacrosse team defeated the California Bears 16-10 at Kittredge Field Sunday.

Grace Donnelly recorded an impressive performance in net, tallying 14 saves.

Coming off their 17-16 win against No. 24 Stanford, CU had a 3-0 run in the first quarter and a 5-0 run in the second quarter to race out to a 10-2 lead at 8:37 in the second quarter.

"It's our ability to stay focused and stay committed to the things that got us that lead," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "We played well for most of the game. We could have done things better to make things easier for us in the end. We've got to continue to work on executing on Sundays after playing a tough game on Friday."

Cal would respond, as it cut CU's advantage to five (10-5) with 12:57 left in the third quarter. The Buffaloes responded with another 3-0 run to take a 13-5 lead with 8:20 remaining in the third. The back-and-forth continued as the Bears used a 5-1 run to get within four of the Buffaloes, 14-10, with just over 10 minutes to play in the game.

"We are playing a competitive schedule in the Pac-12," Whidden said. "You've got to expect that the (opponent's) going to respond. For us, it's our ability to stay focused and stay committed to the things that got us that lead and execute in the moments that we need to execute."

Colorado kept that focus, as the team buckled down defensively and got timely goals from Sam McGee and Grozier. The Buffaloes' defense did not allow a goal in the final 10:28 of the game.

"As the game came down to the end, we were composed and we did a good job being in control and finishing, which is big for us," Whidden said.

Whidden said the team accomplished its goal of going 2-0 during this weekend's homestand.

"Coming in this weekend we knew we had to have a big weekend at home," Whidden said. "It's important in conference play to win at home and compete."

Colorado improved to 8-2 (3-2 Pac-12). California is now 0-11 (0-5 Pac-12).
...

NOTEWORTHY: Grozier's six goals tied a career-high. It was the fourth time she has scored six goals in a game (third this season).

UP NEXT: The Buffaloes embark on a road trip in the Bay Area this week against Stanford (April 1) and California (April 3).

"It's always an interesting thing to turn around and play them again," Whidden said. "The nice part for us is there's not that much work we have to do in terms of learning something new. We've already prepared for them this weekend so it's a little bit easier to prepare for the same teams next weekend. At the same time, you have got to do something a little bit different or it's going to be a little bit harder for you to get the same result. We'll be ready for that."

good game. CU needs to start putting teams away and not let them stay around and close the gap. The Cal goalie in the second half had some nice plays but really stopped their momentum when she committed the foul and gave CU an open net. Friday night will be a huge game against stanford
