BOULDER—A 10-day break in the action for the Colorado Buffaloes comes to a close when Southern Methodist comes to the CU Events Center on Friday (6 p.m. MT).

Colorado (9-0) was last in action on Dec. 7, handing Southern Utah a 34-point loss on its home court. CU took some time off during the week, allowing for the team to focus on their final exams.

"Our schedule [with finals] didn't fluctuate that much, other than having several days off," head coach JR Payne explained. "We got back from Utah and I think we had three of four days off. But our practice time remained close to the same based on the final schedules. We were fortunate it was still early afternoon, so that didn't change too much.

"The biggest thing I think is just the lack of sleep, staying up late studying and things like that. We're just glad that they're over. I'm sure we did really well as far as grads and things like that."

The Buffs have two games leading up to the holiday break and then jump right into Pac-12 Play with Oregon State on New Year's Eve.

"We definitely will stress that [two remaining games]," Payne added. I think we're just very excited to play again. Tomorrow our focus will be on that. The hardest thing all year, every year, is the game right before Christmas. I think we have a very veteran group, so I'm not worried about it but we definitely will remind them that it's important to get all the planning done ahead of time so that the focus is on the game when the time comes."
...

"I think we have a pretty competitive group that likes to get after it no matter what we're doing," Payne described. "We'll do black against white in practice and it will be competitive. Everyone is trying to win and there will be something to it."

SMU (4-5) has had the same 10-day break as the Buffs. The Mustangs defeated Delaware 61-55, on Dec. 7, snapping a two-game losing streak. The Buffs own a 2-0 record over SMU but haven't met since the 2016-17 season.

San Francisco (5-5) will have a few extra days of rest before Monday's contest. The Dons last played at Cal State Fullerton (53-62) on Dec. 7. Colorado is 4-2 all-time against USF. The Buffs have won the last three, dating back to the 2006-07 season.

Friday's game will be broadcast across the Pac-12 Networks. Cory Lopez will have the call on the Colorado Radio Network and the Varsity Network app starting at 5:30 p.m. MT. Monday will be a live stream (CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB) with tip set for 1 p.m. MT.

Soles4Souls
Colorado women's basketball is collecting new and used shoes and clothing on Friday, December 17 at 6:00 p.m. All donations will benefit Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that turns unwanted shoes and clothing into opportunities. New shoes and clothing are distributed to people in need across the U.S. and internationally. Used goods help people launch and sustain their own small businesses selling donated shoes and clothing. Buffs shooting well so far, and defense performing well. It's 21-10 at the end of the 1st quarter.
(Live stats seems to be frozen at the 3:29 mark right now.)

Buffs continue to grow their lead (although it was pretty even the last few minutes); it's 41-19 at the half.

Live stats still delayed, currently showing 4:53 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Buffs had a rough start to the 3rd as SMU rattled off the 1st 8 points. The Buffs came back to get the lead up to, I believe, 23, but then SMU got the lead down to 17 at the end of the quarter (55-38).

The Buffs have come back and dominted the 1st part of the 4th quarter- it's now 66-42 with around 7 minutes left in the game.

Watched on TV (hope to go in person on Monday). There were times when it was clear that the Buffs had been coming off a long layoff. This was most pronounced in the third quarter when the Buffs were sloppy and they were playing as if they had won the game in the first half.

Individually, I was very impressed with Quay Miller. She was highly efficient and had a variety of very effective moves one v one. Her 20 points tonight came off of 8-8 shooting from the floor including 2-2 for three point range. She looks like she is going to be critical to the Buffs' success in conference play.

Also, Kindyll Wetta had a large impact on the game without scoring. She's very confident with the ball in her hands and doesn't make many mistakes. Tonight she had 5 assists, 3 steals and no turnovers in 25 minutes.

Wetta has been impressive all season.

I hope Sherrod is not injured. The team needs her in the conference run.

At the game . . . Buffs struggled at both ends in the second quarter. Dons were hitting lots of treys, Buffs couldn’t get the ball inside.

Buffs end up cruising in this one by dominating the 2nd half, with the final score ending up 80-56 55.

Way to go!

Now about 11 days until conference play starts with a trip to Corvallis (and then Eugene) for a scheduled New Year's Eve game with the Beavers.

Mya got two files in the 1st quarter and didn't play in the 2nd quarter. When she is out for that long, it shows.

Except for the 2nd quarter, the Buffs played well.

We will learn a lot on that Oregon trip.

Yup. She needs to be in the game and out of foul trouble. Same for Miller. In fact they more often than not need to be in at the same time. They are the two that are most likely to be consistent scorers for the Buffs.

At this point, Miller looks to be playing at an all-conference level. Watching her is person today, she can impact the team in a variety of ways. Hitting treys, driving, posting up, passing, and being a theft artist.

Yes, both need to be in the game. Hope Formann gets out of her shooting slump.

Still impressed with Wetta. At this point Sherrod is a better point guard, but Wetta is a freshman who is learning quickly. Nice to have a true back up point guard.

Finau is much better as the off guard than at the point.

Formann really needs to get her shot back. It seems this entire season she's 12-54 from three point ladn.

In the game v USF yesterday I felt Wetta was the best point guard. She has a good understanding of what is needed in terms of tempo and also is very good good in directing things in the half court. And she just doesn't turn the ball over much. In the 11 games the Buffs have played so far she has 10 turnovers v 24 steals and 35 assists.
