For the 1st time since early January, Women's basketball (14-6 overall, 5-4 in Big 12 play) gets 2 straight home games as they work to improve their already great record (10-1) at the CUEC. 1st off it's a visit from the Texas Tech Lady Raiders (TTU; 14-9, 3-7) Sunday afternoon, followed up with the Arizona Wildcats (14-9, 5-5) heading up to Boulder for a Wednesday night contest.

In the latest NET rankings (as of games played 1/31; available at https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is now at #62, while TTU is at #84 and AZ #57.

For I believe the 1st time this conference season, Sunday's game is NOT on ESPN+, with ESPNU slotted to show that one. Then, Wednesday's game is back to the usual ESPN+. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Just waking up in the morning where I'm at in the Far East. Extra impressive the team got the convincing W short-handed.

Way to go Buffs!

Watched the second half on TV. Good job by the Buffs on responding to TT's run and getting the lead back to double-figures and then holding it. As was pointed out above, three Buffs were out including back-up point guard Kennedy Sanders.

Turnovers were fairly even to the 21 committed by CU didn't hurt too much.

Liked the big threes by Garzon and Betson.

Can this team get to 20 wins? They're at 15 right now with 8 conference games left.

This team is doing better than I thought in terms of wins and losses.

Buffs Continue to Roll at Home

Colorado improves to 11-1 at home this season

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado extended its win streak to three games in front of a season-high crowd of 4,953 at the CU Events Center on Sunday. The short-handed Buffaloes took down the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 67-51, with only eight players in the rotation.

The Buffs (15-6, 6-4 Big 12), down leading scorer Frida Formann, controlled the afternoon, leading the contest for all but a span of 2:38 in the first quarter. CU's lead grew to 18 in the fourth quarter as the team shot 51.0% from the field and poured in seven 3-pointers.

"We went through so many adversities during the season, even before the conference [season] even started," grad transfer Lior Garzon noted about being short players. "Just really knowing each other and being there for each other. I think we're doing a really good job. It doesn't have to be loud and go crazy, but we know exactly what we need from each other. And I think once we all just bring it to the court, this is all that we need. I know you're not going to see us go out there and go crazy like, "Oh my god", like that. But the little things that's what make us so good. I think that's what really helped us today."

Garzon led all players with 17 points, hitting 3-for-6 from behind the arc and 5-for-11 from the field.

"It felt really good," Garzon said of her performance. "As a shooter, you always want to see the ball go through. I just trust the process, I know the work I put in, and I know the coaches told me never to stop shooting the ball, no matter what. I just take it in, go to the court, play with confidence, and keep going."

Junior Jade Masogayo continued her dominance in the Big 12, hitting 6-of-7 from the floor, fueling her 14-point effort. Freshman Tabitha Betson led Sunday's three-player bench unit with a season-high 11 points. Freshman Grace Oliver finished just shy of her first-career double-double, totaling seven points and a team-high eight boards. Fifth-year Sara-Rose Smith was also big on the glass for the Buffs with seven total rebounds.

"I said to the team in the locker room, 'Most of our wins are team wins,' like somebody did great here, and somebody did great there, and it's very much a collective effort, which I think is really awesome to do," head coach JR Payne expressed. "Especially in front of your alums that are back in town. So [I'm] really proud, these guys were great [Garzon and Betson], and everybody seemed pretty good today. Proud of our team today."

Texas Tech (14-10, 3-8 Big 12) was limited to 17 field goals and a 32.1 field goal % on the day behind leading scorer Jasmine Shavers' 16 points.

Part of Sunday's action was celebrating the program's 50th anniversary season. Alums from all five decades of Colorado basketball returned to the court at halftime, with the 2002 Elite Eight team getting special recognition.

"What an awesome weekend for us to be celebrating 50 years of women's basketball here at the University of Colorado," Payne said of the celebration. "We had so many alums back, and they were able to spend time with each other. They were able to spend a little bit of time with our team. I think part of our spirit today, as we played, was that we had those guys back supporting [us]."

Frida Formann was out too. They played with a rotation of 8 players.

The team pulled together and got the win. Impressed with shooting over 50% for FG's.

I am being sent a 50th Year sweatshirt and the tumbler. An online acquaintence managed to buy them yesterday.

Getting to Know the Buffs: Tabitha Betson

Getting to know the new players throughout the season

By: Macy Mohlenkamp, Athletic Communications Student Assistant

BOULDER –
On Wednesday, the Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team closes out its two-game homestand with a familiar foe, Arizona, at the CU Events Center.

The Buffs have 10 new faces on the team this season, and CUBuffs.com will feature 'Get to Know' spotlights on all 10 players throughout the season.

Next up is freshman Tabitha Betson.

Why did you start playing basketball and how old were you?

I actually started because of my brother. He started playing, and I just wanted to be just like him. So I was like, 'Give me a basketball.' I was six, actually. I was really little.

Can you share your experience representing Australia in the U17 World Cup?
That was really insane. We were away for, like, a month because of COVID. We had two tournaments in one, but it was amazing. As soon as I got that phone call that I made the team [I started] crying, I was bawling. I ran, and I told my mom. It was just an honor to represent Australia and one I hope to be able to have again.

Why did you choose to study in the United States?
I always wanted to play college basketball. I don't know what it was, but since I was like eight, I was like, 'I'm playing college basketball.' I don't know who I knew. I don't know how I knew about it, but I was just like, 'I'm going to the US, and I'm playing.'

What made you choose CU?
The coaches. Honestly, I love the coaching staff. I had a really good connection with JR during the recruiting process, and I think they're amazing coaches. I felt like I had so much to learn from them. Also, the community is amazing. That was a really big thing. Just on my visit, it just felt comfortable. I came [to CU] and I knew I could go here, and I knew this is where I wanted to be.
...

Betson and the Buffs will be back in action on Wednesday at home against Arizona (7 p.m. MT/ESPN+).

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Feb. 8, at Iowa State (ESPN+/3 p.m. MT).

Buffs scored the last 7 to take that largest (8 point) lead of the game into the half. Good to see at least 1 of the 4 who had to miss the last game, PG Sanders, was able to come in and play 6 minutes in the 2nd quarter after missing the last 3-4 games.

Edit - Masagayo with a great start, as she already has a double double (14 points and 10 rebounds) along with 3 blocks.

Buffs Topple Old Rival, Arizona

A double-double from Jade Masogayo helped CU to a fourth straight win

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Junior transfer Jade Masogayo poured in 19 points and snagged a career-high 14 rebounds as she helped Colorado over familiar foe Arizona, 56-47, Wednesday night at the CU Events Center.

Wednesday's win extends the Buffs' streak to four in a row as the team improves to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in league play.

"Proud of our team tonight; we're a resilient bunch," head coach JR Payne expressed after the win. "We're facing adversity with injuries and different things as well as pressure and some turnovers. I was very proud of how we responded. As far as just making some really big plays, big defensive rebounds, and big plays at the end of the shot clock. A lot of different people contributed in a big way tonight."

Masogayo helped the Buffs early on, clinching her double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and added three blocks by halftime. The Forth Worth, Texas, native finished 6-for-13 from the field and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Lior Garzon was the only other Buff in double figures, closing with 12 points.

"I didn't really realize how many points and rebounds I had," Masogayo noted. "I was just playing my game. I wasn't really thinking about shying off or anything like that. I'm just trying to stay as aggressive as I can."

Colorado held the lead for over 30 minutes, overtaking Arizona by the end of the first quarter, and built an eight-point lead at halftime. CU's advantage grew to 15 points late in the third quarter, but the Wildcats slimmed the deficit down to four midway through the fourth quarter. The Buffs got timely baskets down the stretch from Garzon and Wetta to keep CU in front and secure the win.

Arizona (14-10, 5-6 Big 12) was led by Isis Beh and Skylar Jones, who both had 12 points in the loss.

Payne and Co. were without the services of leading scorer Frida Formann for the second consecutive game.

Watched in person last night - first time since the UNC game early in the season.

Buffs won due to great half court defense and defensive rebounding. And I really do mean great. Arizona shot 32.7% and only pulled down 4 offensive rebounds with no second chance points. Basically AU was one and done when they took a shot. CU pulled down 34 defensive rebounds and AU only scored on 30% of their possessions.

So why was the game close? Arizona ran a lot of trapping zone press and much of the time CU turned the ball over. It was tough to watch. And it was the same mistakes over and over. Dribbling into a double team or picking up the dribble in the wrong spot. When Wetta wasn't in it was really bad.

Had CU had any competence v the press they would have won by 20+ points. The Buffs turned the ball over on 30.9% of their possessions.

Still, CU was scrappy and didn't down on themselves and when AU was making a run late in the game the Buffs overcame their turnovers just enough.

Masogayo's play was the highlight of the game. She had and official double double and radio team was calling it a triple double because she also was fouled 10 times.
They were terrible against the press. Carol Callas said that once we through the ball down low, it's never coming back out. That was the way players last season made so many threes. So teams collapse on the player with the ball and cause turnovers.

We let them get too close in the 4th quarter, but managed to get the W,

Now they play Iowa State on Saturday. Two teams on the bubble according to Charlie Creme.

The team definitely misses Frida.
