Women's basketball (10-4 overall; 1-2 in Big 12 play) is back home for a couple more Big 12 games. 1st off this Wednesday the team hosts the Univ. of Central Florida Knights (UCF; 7-6, 0-3), followed up by a Saturday matinee against the Kansas Jayhawks (KU; 11-3, 1-2).

In the latest NET rankings (as of games played 1/4 ; available at https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is at #70, UCF #157 and KU #80.

As I assume will be the case for most if not all games hosted by a Big 12 school, both games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription to that paid subscription service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Are you allowed to play the Supa Duba Tuba song?
No, that has been cut for a while.

The decision from Athletics was first for the men's program at the start of the '19-20 season, then quickly expanded to the women's. The SDTC was last performed at a women's game that season. (The last men's performance that I am aware of was for the 2019 NIT game vs Norfolk State, which, as it happens, was an alumni game and I was on the court for that one.)

After Athletics cut it from being performed on-court for bball games, the band director independently decided to cut the song from the band's book (for both football and basketball) entirely. It is no longer performed at all.

That makes me sad as it did the last time I was in Boulder for a game and it didn't happen.

Do they still play Hey Baby? I hear that at games that are televised not from Coors.

Game day!

Getting to Know the Buffs: Erin Powell

Getting to know the new players throughout the season

By: Macy Mohlenkamp, Athletic Communications Student Assistant

BOULDER –
The Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team returns home to the CU Events Center, opening the week against the visiting UCF Knights.

The Buffs have 10 new faces on the team this season, and CUBuffs.com will feature 'Get to Know' spotlights on all 10 players throughout the season.

Next up is freshman Erin Powell.

What was it like growing up in England and playing basketball there?

Growing up in England, it's cold and rainy a lot, but I can't complain. I grew up in a nice little town, a small area, a small school, but really nice. Well, it's small compared to America. Playing basketball there was good. I didn't start until I was pretty old, maybe 15. I played for about four years. I didn't really grow up playing it, but I wish I did. The league definitely isn't as good as it is in America, and it's hard to get exposure. But once you get to the women's league, where you can get exposure, it gets a lot easier, and you have a lot of platforms to play.

Why did you start playing basketball?
My friend watched an anime series called Kuroko's Basketball, and she was like, "Do you want to come to basketball practice with me?" At the time, I played net ball and I just loved sports. I played for a football team as well, because everyone in England does. Then I went to my school practice, and we didn't have the girl's team, so it was just me and her. We went to the guy's practice, and then I loved it, and I just started playing from there.
...

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of basketball?
I'm a big gamer. I got an Xbox at home, and in England, I have a Gamer PC. I sadly couldn't bring it with me. But I love my video games. It just gives me a bit of escape from reality. I like reading and I like going on walks and hikes.

Powell and the Buffs will be back in action on Wednesday against UCF (7 p.m. MT).

Thad Anderson and former Buff Kami Carmann Snyder will have the call on ESPN+.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Jan. 11, Kansas (ESPN+/1 p.m. MT).

That makes me sad as it did the last time I was in Boulder for a game and it didn't happen.

Do they still play Hey Baby? I hear that at games that are televised not from Coors.
I just double-checked and 'Hey Baby' is no longer in the book. I remember last playing it at an alumni event pre-COVID, so it may have gone out when the prior Basketball Band Director shook up the book.

As a side note, Coach Barry had asked the band not to play 'Hey Baby' at women's games when I was in school. It was on a list of cheers and songs we kept to men's games only. After her retirement, the song came back into full rotation for a while.

Of course with my luck, once I start watching it looks like the Knights are the dominant team. Thankfully, the Buffs still have a comfortable 64-45 lead going into the final quarter in spite of an 18-0 UCF 3rd quarter scoring run.

good win. Sloppy 2nd half. Going to miss Forman why en she leaves. She is the only I am confident that will make the shot.

Happy to see Frida get back in the groove. Team still doesn't play as good of defense as I would like to see. This wasn't a very good team and they scored over 60 points.

Between the two teams, there were way too many fouls called. That is more a reflection on the officials than the players.

I saw several players were in street clothes. Assuming they are injured. Does anyone know who they are?

Buffs’ Offense Asserts Itself Early in Win Over UCF

CU led for the entirety of the night in its return home

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The Colorado offense took care of business in its return home to the CU Events Center on Wednesday. The Buffaloes scored the first 13 points of the night and never looked back, sending UCF packing 81-62.

Colorado (11-4, 2-2 Big 12) totaled 31 points in the first quarter, setting the tone for the remainder of the night. Frida Formann scored 12 of her team-high 22 points in the opening quarter. She hit her first 3-pointer of the night to open the scoring and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field to help catapult the Buffs to 31 points in the first 10 minutes.

"I think it was really good," Formann said of the team's hot start. "I tried to instill in us – it's a statement. A team like that is also just trying to find some success somewhere. You can't let them in a little bit. So, I think it was a really good statement from the jump of controlling the pace, playing our game and playing great defense. It was a really fun way to start the game that first quarter."

The Buffs led from the open and never let UCF get back within single digits after the first five minutes of the night.

"[I'm] proud of how we played tonight, proud of our response coming off two difficult losses on the road," head coach JR Payne stated after the win. "I thought we were pretty resilient. We got a stretch in the third quarter, which was not our best, but I thought we really stuck together and stayed together, which is really important when we're taking on heat from another team, which was good. Lots of different production and lots of different contributions for many different players, both starters and from the bench, which continues to be a really good thing for us. Any victory in the conference is a great victory. So, we're very happy."

Jade Masogayo (16) and Nyamer Diew (10) also closed in double figures. Colorado's offense got back into form after a slow go of things last week in Texas. The Buffs hit 51.8% from the field, marking the sixth game time the team has shot over 50% in the previous eight games.

The Buffs hit eight of their 10 3-pointers in the first half and put up a season-high 32 attempts on the night. The Black & Gold controlled the paint with a 32-16 advantage and outrebounded the Knights 31-28.

UCF (7-7, 0-4 Big 12) resuscitated its offense in the third quarter. The Knights outscored its first-half total by three points, totaling 24 in the third quarter. Kaitlin Peterson led the visitors with a game-high 24 points, doing most of her damage at the free-throw line with 15 makes on 17 attempts.
...

Masogayo closed out the night with seven of the team's 17 points in the final quarter. She went 5-for-6 from the line as she battled with UCF's Hannah Gusters. Gusters picked up four of her five fouls in a little over five and a half minutes of action in the quarter before fouling out.

"She's a lot bigger than me, but I just did my best to push her out of the paint as much as I could," Masogayo said about the matchup with Gusters. "And I had a lot of help from my teammates just trying to sink in and help off me. So, it was a good team effort."

Up Next
The Buffs will continue at home this week with a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks.

WBB 50th Season Highlights: Kansas

Colorado secures first Big 12 win under new head coach

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The 2024-25 season marks Colorado's return to the Big 12 Conference and a renewal of traditional and historic rivalries.

As part of the celebration of Colorado women's basketball's 50th anniversary season, CUBuffs.com will look back at historic matchups.

The Game: Colorado vs Kansas, Jan. 10, 2006

Colorado, under first-year head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller, entered the matchup with KU with a 0-2 start in the Big 12. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks started the season with 12 consecutive wins and came to Boulder with a 12-1 overall record.

Colorado Grabs First Big 12 Win, 74-65 Over Kansas

BOULDER -
Jackie McFarland and Jasmina Ilic each had 18 points and hot second half shooting propelled Colorado to its first Big 12 Conference win in the Kathy McConnell-Miller era with a 74-65 decision over Kansas on Tuesday evening at the Coors Events Conference Center.
...

Colorado (11-4, 2-2 Big 12) looks to complete its first home sweep of the Big 12 season when it clashes with Kansas on Saturday. Kansas (11-4, 1-3 Big 12) picked up its first Big 12 win last week at Oklahoma State.

Saturday will be the 70th meeting between the two programs. KU has a three-game advantage in the series, 36-33, but the Buffs are 18-12 on their home court.

Thad Anderson and former Buff Kami Carmann Snyder will have Saturday's (Jan. 11) call on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. MT.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Lots of offense in this one so far as the Buffs take a 41-35 lead into the half. (KU is living and dying by the 3 so far with 17 of their 25 shots being from beyond the arc. The Buffs have been more efficient from there as both have made 6, but the Buffs have done it on only 9 attempts.)

NICE win for the Buffs as a battle of very efficient looking and nice shooting offenses goes to the Buffs 84-76.

Many nice stories in this one. Smith was huge on the boards, finishing with 19. (The school record is 22, and Smith had 17 midway through the 3rd. She ended up out-rebounding the KU TEAM, as they finished with 18.) Also great shooting from the team outside, ending 9-15 from 3, and Masagayo, who is a VERY strong and graceful post player with good hands, ended up with 20 points in spite of foul issues limiting her to 21 minutes.

Way to go Buffs!

Sara Rose was a monster on the boards yesterday. Congrats to her.

Masagayo is a pleasure to watch.

It's great to see Kennedy Sanders and Grace Oliver are looking good. Sanders was the only freshman from last year to stick around and Oliver is a freshman (I think).

Career-Day for Smith Helps Buffs Past Kansas

Sara-Rose Smith snags 19 rebounds in 84-76 win

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado's offensive momentum spilled over into Saturday with four Buffaloes reaching double-figures, and Sara-Rose Smith dominated the glass with a career-high 19 rebounds as the Buffs handled the visiting Kansas Jayhawks, 84-76.

Smith accounted for almost half of CU's 39 rebounds and had eight of the team's 14 offensive boards. The 19 rebounds tied the fourth most in a game by a Buff and the most since Quay Miller had 19 against Oregon State in the 2022-23 season. Saturday was the fourth time a CU player had 19 rebounds in a game. The fifth-year senior added eight points and two assists to her totals.

"I think I said to a couple of our assistant coaches, 'Man, I really just need to go out there and be a dog today.'" Smith said after the win. "For the past couple of days of practice and before the game today, I said, 'Sara, be a dog,' and that's what I wanted to do. That's how I wanted to go out, and I mean challenge accepted. I can't be doing this anymore; I cannot do these 2.1 rebound games—like that is not me. That's not who I want to be, and that's not my role on this team. So, getting up extra possessions and stuff like that for my team, I'm really happy that I was able to pull that out today."

Colorado (12-4, 3-2 Big 12) led by as many as 18 in the third quarter on its way to a second consecutive game of over 80 points. Jade Masogayo finished with 20 points, one off her career-high and the most she's had in her first year as a Buff. Lior Garzon and Frida Formann accounted for six of CU's nine 3-pointers, finishing with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Nymaer Diew finished 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 behind the arc to get 11 points off the bench. Kindyll Wetta quarterbacked the Buffs' offense with eight of the team's 21 assists.

"I'm really proud of so many great individual performances in the in the box score, but also collectively as a team," head coach JR Payne expressed. "I thought we did a great job in the third quarter. I think we were all pretty focused on having an aggressive, organized third quarter after the last game when we weren't as great in the third, but then also just being able to respond collectively when things aren't necessarily going our way is really important because this is such a good conference that you're not going to come out and roll anybody. There's always going to be runs that are made against you, and we have to be able to respond, which I thought we did. Proud of our game today."

Colorado was able to limit the Kansas (11-5, 1-4 Big 12) offense to almost exclusively three players. Elle Evans (28), Regan Williams (17) and S'Mya Nichols totaled 60 of the Jayhawks' 76 points. The CU bench, which got contributions from Kennedy Sanders, Ayianna Johnson and Grace Oliver, outscored the KU bench 22-4.

"It's always a nice challenge for me just to play against a player like that [Nichols]," Wetta explained. "But very big, very physical team as a whole, they [CU coaches] prepared us very well for this game and what kind of players we were going to face."
...

Up Next
Colorado will travel to the Eastern time zone next week for a pair of games. The Buffs will open the week on Wednesday at West Virginia.

Notes
Saturday was the 70th meeting between Kansas and Colorado…The win snapped a six-game losing streak to KU…Colorado improves to 34-36 all-time against Kansas…Smith's first rebound of the day was the 500th of her career…CU's 81.8% shooting in the third quarter was the second quarter of the season over 80.0% (also 81.8% in 4th quarter against WVU)…CU had 44 points in the paint, its fourth game this season with 40+ points in the paint…Formann had a career-high eight rebounds…Masogayo tied career-highs in FGM (9) and FGA (14)…She leads CU with 12 games of 10 or more points this season.
