STREAK: Lost 10 • LAST 10 MEETINGS: 0-10

BOULDER – The Colorado women's basketball team (11-4, 2-1 Big 12) goes back on the road this week to face No. 16 Baylor (13-3, 2-1 Big 12) on Jan. 8 at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas, at 6 p.m. MT.

The Buffs will face the Bears for the 23rd time in program history, and CU looks to snap a 10-game losing streak to Baylor. The Buffs-Bears rivalry dates back to 1980, when Colorado started on a five-game win streak. Last season, the CU met with Baylor twice – the Buffs fell most recently, 84-62, at CU Events Center on Feb. 19, 2025.

On New Year's Eve earlier this week, the Buffs hosted Arizona for their conference home opener. CU flipped the script from its previous loss to ASU, getting out ahead of the Wildcats early in the first quarter and leading the whole way. Four Buffs managed double-digit points for the eighth and ninth games this season, including senior forward Anaëlle Dutat, who had her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds against the Arizona Wildcats.

TIP-OFF (TL;DR)
  • CU is led by 10th-year head coach JR Payne, who has led the Buffs to a 175-120 (.593) record as CU's eighth head women's basketball coach. Coach Payne has been extended through the 2028 season and has led the Buffs to three NCAA appearances, two WNIT appearances and one WBIT appearance.
...

  • As a team, the Buffs are third in the Big 12 for steals per game (11.27), fourth for offensive rebounds per game (13.5), fifth for free throw percentage (73.5%), sixth for rebounding margin (8.0) and seventh for scoring defense (59.5).

ROAM WITH THE BUFFS: The Buffs' game at No. 16 Baylor will be streamed on ESPN+. The Buffs are on the radio via the CUBuffs.com website and Varsity app for every game. The pregame show, Buffs Warm-up, starts a half-hour before tip and includes a pregame interview with Coach Payne. At halftime, stay tuned for a get-to-know interview with players and coaches. Colorado broadcasts on the iHeart Radio station, 'Denver's Talk Station' AM 630 KHOW. Available on the Varsity app. Fans can also follow Colorado games through live stats with links available at CUBuffs.com.

SIC 'EM: (cont.) The last time CU defeated the Bears was in 2004 in Waco, Texas, where the Buffs beat them by 10, 69-59 (Jan. 7). A Buffs win in Thursday's matchup would be its first since returning to the conference in 2024.

Not that they mean much if anything, especially this early in the season, but just a few ratings and rankings for reference purposes for CU and its upcoming opponents (as of whenever I'm typing this):

(1) In the NET rankings (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is at #63 (up from #71), Baylor #28 and OSU #32.
(2) From what I found via a QUICK Google search, another component is Strength of Record. Per the search, one of the resources available to the public for this is Warren Nolan's SofS ratings (I chose based on NET option; available at https://www.warrennolan.com/basketballw/2025/sos-net). As I type this, CU is at #53 (unchanged from last week), Baylor #41 and OSU #70.
(3) KPI (the Kevin Pauga Index, as of 12/24; https://faktorsports.com/) is another rating used by the Selection Committee. In that, CU is at #?? (From #53 last week), Baylor # and OSU #. (The website wasn't working as I type this.)
(4) Finally, in the Massey ratings ( https://masseyratings.com/cbw/ncaa-d1/ratings), CU is at #49 (up from 57), Baylor #20 and OSU #34.

Many upsets last night in Big 12 WBB. That average look Cincinnatti team destroyed Iowa State and made them look like they have no idea of what they are doing.

that was an ugly game from both teams. CU struggles on offense and loses a game that Baylor was trying to give them

Quote from JR: Twenty-eight percent from the floor isn't going to be successful very often

This is an understatement.

If you only score 52 points, not many games will be won. When you hold the other team to 56 points, you should win the game. You don't when you can't hit the broadside of a barn and have no one you know is a consistent shooter.

This team is not very good. I hope JR has some $$$ to recruit better players when the invetitable jump to the portal happens in the spring.

Tough end to this one as CU fought to get a 49-45 lead with ~6 minutes left, but only score 2 points in the next ~5-1/2 minutes (before scoring 5 in the last 20 seconds), and OSU gets the win 56-63.

This is not working. Would love to be more positive, but this offense is not working at all. JR mentioned in the coaches show on monday night her offense is designed to be continuous motion and anybody can score. She has to start recruiting like that then. CSU mbb has the type of motion offense and the coach goes out and gets 2 pure shooters. Everybody on the court can shoot and 2 are in the top 5 of the NCAA in 3 point shooting. I like some of these players but there is nobody and nothing on offense that any team is scared of. Could of had 2 road wins

Spacing is horrible when you can't shoot from 3 and the other team can go underneath every screen.

JR may have to start running more ISO and 2-woman game with clear outs.

That and maybe extend the defense and take more chances along with pushing pace after giving up a basket for a secondary break opportunity because this team needs easy transition points.

No, it's not even close to working. Biggest problem is we don't have any player who can consistently shoot the ball and score, let alone make a 3. The 3 point shooting problem has been evident all along. Losing Sanders didn't change that.

The defense is good enough to win, but this team has no offense. None whatsoever.

Candles? That is not much of a giveaway.
Better than a sharp stick to the eye. 🙂

I also thought it was kind of lame, but I'm supportive of doing something rather than nothing. Especially when I don't know that anything was planned or budgeted for this year. Baby steps.

I doubt if anything was budgeted.

If you can, please go watch this game. Right now, they have a opportunity to beat Iowa State. Two starters, a forward and a guard are out with injuries, and they have lost every game since Baylor beat them. The team can't figure out how to get the ball to Crooks and the other players have not had to score this season. Their bench is not deep and it shows.

this offense is hard to watch. They look so confused and nobody but Wooten is confident enough to shoot. This is another winnable game that the bad offense and 20% shooting will doom them again. Not doing a bad job on Crooks but need to score points.

give them credit. they worked and got the win. I did not remember Maave playing in the second half. did she get hurt. Get game by Wooten and some cloth 3s by TB. heck of a effort on Crooks by everybody. She is going to need a cold tub after this game
