O'Loughlin--AFA--2017

Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Host Arizona State owns the first day lead with a 18-under par score of 262, with Clemson three back at 265, followed by Arizona in third (268) and Illinois and Kent State tied for fourth at 269. Colorado turned in a 2-over team score of 282, which has the Buffaloes 13th in the 15-team field, which features schools from four time zones, a rarity. While 20 strokes out of the lead, CU is just 13 out the top five and the Buffs have been known to have many a great second round down here in the desert. The Buffaloes are coming off a victory in Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitational. "We didn't play our best, but did a good job of keeping ourselves in the round, which is really important when you're not clicking on all cylinders," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Everyone was competing, we just managed our scoring more than anything today. Everything was just a touch off, tee balls, wedges, short games. But we have two more rounds to turn it around. We have some opportunities to beat some good teams, but we'll need to play better." Senior Daniel O'Loughlin led the Buffs here Friday, as he is tied for 20th after firing a 2-under 68 on the 7,081-yard, par-70 Mirabel Golf Club course layout. He had one of 11 eagles in the field, which he made on the par-5 17th hole to get into red numbers for the round. He also had a birdie, 15 pars – second-most in the field – and a single bogey. Senior Victor Bjorlow carded an even-par 70 to stand in a 42nd place tie. He recorded three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys for his round, as he turned at 1-under par before a couple of early bogeys on the back nine pushed him over par; he rallied with a birdie on 17 to get back to even. Junior Cole Krantz is tied for 49th after fashioning a 1-over 71; he had three bogeys, 12 pars, two bogeys and a double, the latter coming on the par-4 ninth following two birds on the previous three holes. Sophomore John Paterson is tied for 64th with a 3-over 73 after leading the Buffaloes at Air Force with a ninth-place showing. He had two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys Friday; he opened with two of those bogeys on his first four holes, but quickly got back to even with both of his birds on the next three holes. He made the turn at even but had the other three bogeys on the back nine. Sophomore Kristoffer Max rounded out the CU performers Friday, struggling to a 9-over 79 that unfortunately landed him in 75th, or last place. He managed only one birdie with 10 pars, as four bogeys and three doubles did him in overall. Illinois' Jerry Ji and Kent State's Josh Gilkison are tied for the lead after posting 7-under par 63 scores; Ji had seven birdies while Gilkison had eight and one bogey on their days. The second round is set for Saturday, as the Buffaloes will tee off at 8:50 a.m. MDT off No. 10, and will be paired with Utah and Kent State. The third and final round will commence Sunday morning. NOTES: The average score for Friday was 69.43, as 41 turned in subpar rounds with another seven shooting even-par 70s … Colorado was third in the field with 60 pars, but was last with just 10 birdies … As a result of the latter, the Buffs were tied for 11th in par-5 scoring (4-under), 13th in par-3 scoring (3-over) and 14th on the par-4 holes (plus-12) … Just who or what is Maui Jim?
