As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout the regular season, as well as any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals. (Separate threads will be set when the 2 biggest meets of the year get near to starting up - the MPSF (Conference) Championships (2/28 & 2/29) and of course the NCAA Championships (3/13-3/14).)

Edit- Wanted to add info for how athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor T & F Championships. Unlike outdoors, there are no regional championships run to choose who advances. It's merely-
  • Individually, it's just the athletes who earn the top 16 times or marks during the qualifying period who accept the invitation to go the championships for that event.
  • For relays, it's the teams with the top 12 times who accept a bid.
  • Note that there are adjustments made for (1) altitude and (2) facility rating. (An Altitude conversion app and facility conversion factor document can be found in the next link below.)
  • Full explanation of qualifying is at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1ITF .
To keep up with how individual Buffs are placed to qualify, I believe the official resource for times are-
(For awhile, last season's results are probably more indicative of potential qualifying marks. Links to last season's results are:
Edit 2 - Just for reference purposes, here are the results from last year's major championships:
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Mainly for my own purposes, just some reference rough MINIMUM goals for times (including both net (sea level) and Boulder converted times for track) at various events based on the last couple years' minimum qualifying times for those who could qualify for the NCAA Championship. (Didn't bother in races/ events where I don't foresee the Buffs having a chance at earning an NCAA qualifying time/ mark.) :
Note- these are all GUESSTIMATED based on the last 2 years results, so these times might be faster or slower than what ends up being the qualifying time this season. Also, I just looked for the 16th fastest time (or 12th for relays) for each event. (Sometimes, athletes may elect not to compete in the event, so that could make these times a LITTLE quicker than required based on qualifiers below 16th who may have ended up qualifying in prior or this season.)

Women : Guesstimated sea level time to qualify (Boulder converted altitude equivalent) -
60M Hurdles - 8.09 (8.07)
400M - 52.75 (52.64)
800M - 2:04.50 (2:05.33; this is based on 2018, which was 1 second quicker than last season.)
Mile - 4:35.15 (4:42.12)
3000M - 9:03 (9:18.69)
5000M - 15:42 (16:11.26)
DMR - 11:00 (11:11.48)
4X400M - 3:32.61 (3:32.17)
Pentathlon - 4,082 (in 2019; 4,121 in 2018)

Men : Guesstimated converted sea level time (Boulder altitude equivalent) -
Mile - 3:57.65 (4:03.67. Based on 2018; 2019 was ~1 second slower.)
3000M - 7:51.91 (8:05.55)
5000M - 13.41 (14:06.50)
4X400M Relay - 3:06.17 (3:05.73)

Release: December 04, 2019

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program begins the 2020 indoor track and field season this weekend when members of the jumps, sprints, combined events and throws compete at meets at Colorado School of Mines Thursday and Friday as well as the Air Force Holiday Open Friday.

This weekend will see the debut of 10 Buffs including Tamia Badal in the 60 hurdles, Ryan Charles in high jump and Avery McMullen in the pentathlon. On the throwers side, Lars Atkinson, Henry Carlson and Clayton Castro will all make their indoor debuts after redshirting last year. They will be joined by four true freshmen on the women's side in Elena Opp, Jane Powers, Gya'ni Sami and Lauren Whyrick at the Air Force Holiday Open. Tyler Sconce will be the only non-freshman competing for the throws.

The hurdle squad will also feature Val Welch, Dani Johnson and Kellen Monestime. Welch and Johnson are coming off of NCAA performances in the 4x400 as well as Preliminaries in the 400 hurdles. Jeremy Cody placed third in the USA U20 Championships this summer in the high jump and will debut his season as the Mines meet alongside Kylee Harr. Both sophomores are 10th in school history in the event. They will also be joined by Giancarlo Narvarte in the high jump while Cheyenne Cheshier competes in the triple jump.

First on the track will be Davis Butte and Wyatt Rhoads in the heptathlon alongside McMullen's debut in the pentathlon.

This will mark the first meet of the season and a test before the winter break. Colorado will host the 2020 Potts Invitational on Jan. 10th and 11th, this year open to more than just the local Division I teams. The Colorado Invitational Jan. 30 – Feb. 1 will feature stricter competition with event standards appropriate to that of top-75 on the NCAA descending list last season.

Looks like a great start to Avery McMullen's CU athletic career-

(Per last season's performance list (https://cubuffs.com/documents/2019/3/11//2018_19_Indoor_Track_Performance_List_FINAL.pdf?id=12416), her score would have been the 3rd highest point total (and just 2 points behind 2nd) by a Buff last season, and that team included two great senior Buffs who both ended up being 2 of only 24 women nationwide to qualify for last season's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon.)

Article after today's action. (Always great to see a freshman get a top 10 Buff mark in her 1st competition, and, after I believe battling injury last season, great to see senior transfer Rhodes looking to be healthier this year and also booking a top 10 all-time CU result.) -

GOLDEN – The University of Colorado track and field program finished off the 2019 calendar year on a high-note, led by the performance of heptathlete Wyatt Rhoads jumping into the CU top-10 list as well as Gya'ni Sami in the throws.

Rhoads finished third in the heptathlon at the Mines Alumni Classic and Multi in Golden with a score of 5,061, good for eighth in CU history. The senior transfer started the day off with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.50 seconds, just a tenth of a second ahead of teammate Davis Butte. Rhoads followed it up with a strong third-place finish in the pole vault at 4.30m (14-1.25) as Butte jumped 4.10m. Rhoads held on in the 1,000 to finish eighth with a time of 2:55.57 while Butte didn't start, disqualifying himself from the heptathlon placing.

This wasn't the only strong action at Colorado School of Mines today as the Buffalo women swept the top-three spots in the 60 hurdle finals. Dani Johnson picked up the win in 8.44 seconds, just five-hundredths of a second off her personal best. Valerie Welch started her season with a second-place finish at 8.68, while Tamia Badal opened her career with a third-place finish at 8.82 seconds.

In the field events, Jeremy Cody won the high jump with a jump of 2.07 meters (6-9.5) while teammate Giancarlo Narvarte placed 10th at 1.94m. Kylee Harr placed fourth on the women's side of the high jump with a mark of 1.62m (5-3.75) while Cheyenne Cheshier placed third in the triple jump at 11.29m (37-0.5).

The throws squad headed down I-25 to the Air Force Holiday Open Friday evening and was led by a pair of fourth-place finishes in the weight throw. Tyler Sconce threw 15.61 meters to place fourth in the men's competition while true freshman Sami threw 16.10 meters to put herself eighth in school history after just one competition.
...

The Buffaloes will return to action in 2020 when they host the 2020 Potts Invitational January 10th and 11th.

Is Gya'ni Sami related to Jalen Sami? Given the unique name, the fact that they both are from the Springs, and that they kinda resemble each other, I'm guessing yes.

I follow Coach Lindsey Malone on Instagram. She seems to be very excited about this group of Buffs.

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Colorado track and field program open the 2020 season this weekend at home in the Potts Invitational with field events Friday starting at noon and running events beginning Saturday at 11 a.m.

Both squads enter the season ranked in the top-12 in the nation after today's USTFCCCA Indoor Track and Field Preseason rankings came out with the women named 12th and the men's team ranked 10th.
...

This weekend will see women entered in all events except the 60-meter dash and pole vault, while the men are represented in events except for the 60, mile and both horizontal jumps. For the women, half of the NCAA qualifying 4x400 team will be in the 200 with Eriana Henderson and Dani Johnson running in both and hurdling. Freshman multi Avery McMullen will also compete in both those events while Kylee Harr will join McMullen in both the 200 and high jump.

In the distance events, Karina Mann will run the 800 and mile, being joined in the mile by Kaitlyn Barthell who will also run in the 3,000 with Liz Constien.

Cheyenne Cheshier will be the only Buff in the horizontal jumps, competing in both the long and triple for the women. Colorado will also have a quartet of freshmen throwers in the weight throw with Gya'ni Sami, Jane Powers, Elena Opp and Lauren Whyrick. All except Powers will double in the shot put as well.

For the men, the 400 and 3,000 will be large focuses on the track with Kendal Smith, Nathan Hoy, Garrett Nelson and Wyatt Rhoads all in the open 400. Eduardo Herrera leads Paxton Smith and Josh Torres in the 3,000.

For field events, the men's high jump will be highly contested with Jeremy Cody, Ryan Charles, Giancarlo Narvarte and Davis Butte all jumping. The Buffs will have another throwing quartet, this time in the men's shot put with Tyler Sconce, Clayton Castro, Henry Carlson and Lars Atkinson. All of them will double in the weight throw except Carlson.
"
(With the Buff teams' typically not wanting to "burn" red shirts early in any season, be interesting to see if there are other Buffs (especially freshmen) who may also be competing at this meet who just aren't noted in the preview article.)

Congrats to the field athletes for some solid marks in today's action-

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program opened the 2020 calendar year with three new entries in the CU top-10 record books, led by sophomore high jumper Jeremy Cody's victory and personal best 2.12 meters (6-11.5).

Cody capped off a stellar opening performance after winning the meet on his second clearance of the day at 2.06m (6-9) then immediately putting the bar at 2.12 meters (6-11.5), exactly one centimeter better than his best performance last season. The sophomore cleared the bar on his first attempt and pushed the bar to the 2.15 meters, the A standard for the USATF Indoor Championships this season, where he missed all his attempts. The mark moves him into eighth in school history.
...

The other two top-10 marks came from a pair of freshmen in the women's weight throw. Gya'ni Sami led the Buffaloes with a third-place finish at 16.30m (53-5.75), improving her eighth-best mark in school history by more than seven inches. Jane Powers jumped into the top-10 one spot behind Sami with a toss of 15.56 meters (51-0.75), good for fourth overall.

Colorado also had the highest collegiate finisher in two more events with Cheyenne Cheshier winning the women's triple jump in 11.55 meters (37-10.75) and Tyler Sconce placing second in the men's weight throw with a toss of 17.28 meters (56-8.5), nearly a two-meter improvement. Sconce was second to Caleb Penner who competed unattached and won the event in a toss of 17.38m (57-0.25), just three-quarters of an inch from tying the 10th-best mark in school history.

The Buffs also had strong showings in the men's pole vault and women's high jump. Wyatt Rhoads placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.25 meters (13-11.25) while teammate Davis Butte was fifth with the same mark. Kylee Harr and Avery McMullen went 3-5 in the women's high jump, both clearing 1.66 meters (5-5.25).

The Buffaloes continue action tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the start of both the men and women's shot put as well as running events.

There aren't that many chances to see the T&F teams at a home meet in Boulder; today is one of those days.

Article after today's action.
(Note- also wanted to give props to a few of the non-uniformed (potential redshirt) Buff athletes who don't get recognized in the below article but had solid results, most notably to me some of the true freshmen men's distance runners who had some solid finishes in the 3000M run, led by Coloradan (from Morrison) Austin Vancil's 3rd place finish, and grad transfer (from CSU) Ronald Sayles winning the 200M.) -

BOULDER – The Colorado track and field program concluded the final day of the Potts Invitational with a pair of wins on the women's side Saturday in the Indoor Practice Facility.

The women's hurdle squad stole the day with all five women advancing to the hurdle finals where Dani Johnson took the win at 8.44 seconds. Right behind her was Valerie Welch who was just two-hundredths of a second off her best last season. Freshman Tamia Badal became the ninth-best performer in school history after she ran 8.73 to finish fourth while freshman pentathlete Avery McMullen ran 8.82 to finish fifth. Eriana Henderson overran the first two hurdles, throwing off her momentum as she finished in eighth after qualifying with the second-fastest mark of 8.67 seconds in prelims.
...

On the men's side, Kendal Smith and Eduardo Herrera picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in their respected events. Smith led a trio of 400-meter runners from Colorado as he finished second in 48.42. Freshman Garrett Nelson opened his career with a fourth-place 48.77, running virtually alone as he built up a huge gap from the start. Nathan Hoy rounded out the top-five at 49.14.

Herrera ran 8:29.93 for his first 3,000 at altitude in a CU jersey, finishing second overall. Paxton Smith dropped 12 seconds off his personal best to finish fourth in 8:35.68.

Colorado returns to action next week at the Air Force Invitational Thursday through Saturday. After that everyone takes the following weekend off in preparation for the Colorado Invitational January 30th to February 1st.

Have to mention there's already been some tough news regarding the women's team as Sage Hurta, who was probably one of the main student-athletes expected to contribute big points for the women at the NCAA Championships level, made an Instagram post a day or two ago saying she won't be able to compete this indoor season due to injury (a tibial stress fracture). (Source - https://www.thestridereport.com/post/breaking-colorado-sage-hurta-out-for-season; also see her post below.)

As always with injury to any Buffs (and all people in general), wish her a complete and speedy recovery, and hope it includes minimal to no pain and inconvenience.

A few notes on the news-
  • Her post only mentions missing the Indoor Championships. Hope she can recover and have a solid training period for the outdoor season, both for her team, as well as giving her the best chance at competing at her best at the U.S. Olympic Trials in late June.
  • Her post says she's been dealing with this for 3 months, which included the most significant races (Conference and NCAA Championships) of the cross country season. Always impressed with the discipline, toughness and talent of top athletes, and she definitely showed this late last year as she was still able to earn All-Conference and All-American honors (the later with her 38th place finish at NCAA's) in spite of not being at (or near???) 100%.
  • As I had mentioned back at the bottom of post #17, Flotrack (in its 1st early season poll (dated 1/6/2020) had the Buff women as a potential podium team with a #3 ranking (based on a guesstimated 35 points). Since they had Ms. Hurta as their #1 ranked 800M runner and, I'm guessing, at minimum, maybe had her also factored her in as a contributor on a points-earning Distance Medley (DMR) Team, assume the team will now go down quite a bit whenever Flotrack releases its next rankings. Hopefully, however, there are other Buffs who have been putting in the work, in ALL of the track and field events, so as to help pick up some points in the Big NCAA meet (As Gabby Scott did last season in the 400M), and of course also at the (MPSF) Conference meet. (I'm guessing that they probably had all the Buff women's points coming from the DMR, Ms. Hurta, Makena Morley (who scored at both the 3000M and 5000M distances last season), and Dani Jones, who the experts all seem to have as the favorite in whatever race(s) she decides to race at NCAA's.)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program heads down I-25 to Colorado Springs to compete in the Air Force Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Colorado will not have a presence in the first of this three day meet as the team will not compete any combined event athletes in the pentathlon or heptathlon. Action begins Friday for the Buffaloes with Eriana Henderson breaking a two-year hiatus in the women's 60-meter dash for Colorado as she competes in the qualifying preliminaries. Jaida Drame will be the lone 400-meter athlete this weekend while Tamia Badal, Dani Johnson, Samantha Crosmer, Kendal Smith, Kellen Monestime, Garrett Nelson and Nathan Hoy all fill in the 200-meter dash.

The long jump will see Valerie Welch look to defend her title from last season at this meet but will have stiff teammate competition with freshman Avery McMullen and Cheyenne Cheshier present in the jumps Friday. Heptathletes Wyatt Rhoads and Davis Butte will begin a long weekend Friday in the long jump.

Saturday action ramps up for CU as the 60-meter hurdles begin with Monestime, Butte and Rhoads on the men's side while Johnson, Henderson, Badal, Welch, McMullen and Cheshier all compete on the women's side. This will be Cheshier's first time hurdling in a Colorado uniform as she will also compete in the triple jump.

The high jump will be another chance at a title for the Buffaloes as Jeremy Cody is tied for the best entry mark at 2.12m (6-11.5). He will be joined by Ryan Charles, Giancarlo Narvarte and Rhoads. Butte will be in the pole vault. Kylee Harr will join McMullen on the women's side of the high jump.

The throws action will begin Friday with the weight throw where Tyler Sconce, Clayton Castro and Lars Atkinson will compete for the men while the same quartet of freshmen women will continue to push their way in to the top-10 record book with Gya'ni Sami, Jane Powers, Elena Opp and Lauren Whyrick. The shot put occurs Saturday with all the same women except Powers competing as well as all the same men with the inclusion of Ryan Ganson and Henry Carlson.

This will be the last meet of early January as the entire team takes off the following weekend to prepare for the Colorado Invitational.

(Buffs already with some nice scoring performances, as in the 1st 2 individual events completed so far, the Buffs got 3rd (frosh Avery McMullen) and 5th (4th collegian, junior Valerie Welsh) place scoring finishes in the women's long jump, while the men's weight throw results show sophomore Tyler Sconce finishing 3rd and redshirt freshmen Clayton Castro and Laurence Atkinson the 7th and 8th place scoring athletes. (An unattached CU athlete finished 5th.))

Looks like some more field events will be getting ready to start in less than a half hour, while the track racing will be starting at 1:00.

And, the article covering yesterday's action-

Looking at live results, looks like a very nice start to the day, with junior Cheyenne Cheshier in the women's triple jump and sophomore Jeremy Cody in the men's high jump (believe in a personal record (at minimum collegiate) >7' jump) both earning event wins. (Ms. Cheshier passed her last 3 jumps; hopefully that was a tactical and not health-required decision. Edit- I don't believe she runs it often, but she did subsequently run in the prelims of the 60M hurdles, which increases the odds the passing in her later triple jum rounds was tactical.)

Article after yesterday's results-

USAFA – The University of Colorado track and field program notched three victories Saturday in the final day of the Air Force Invitational, including sophomore high jumper Jeremy Cody who cleared the seven-feet mark for the first time.

Cody took the victory at 2.05 meters (6-8.75) on his second attempt, then continued to clear 2.10 meters (6-10.75), also on his second attempt. It took him just one attempt to break the 7-foot barrier at 2.14 meters (7-0.25). Cody's clearance makes him the eighth Buff to clear the mark indoors. He is also just the second CU athlete in the past 27 years to hit the 7-foot barrier.

The CU women took two victories in the final day of competition. Dani Johnson led a stampede of Buffs in the 60-meter hurdles and Cheyenne Cheshier jumped 11.62-meters (38-1.5) in the triple jump, winning the meet on her second jump of the competition.

Colorado enters a two-week break from meet competition in preparation for the Colorado Invitational that begins Thursday, Jan. 30.
