Buff volleyball (2-0, 2-0, Receiving votes (RV) in this week's coaches' poll) hopes to continue its season this weekend as they host the Golden Bears (0-4, 0-4) at the Events Center. (I've been trying to hold off posting these match threads too early with the pandemic delays, but with almost every Olympic sport team in action this weekend, thought I'd post this now while I have more time, especially since there's a preview article already out.)

(Note- Cal is having to "roster up" hard this season, but still took a set against both the teams they've played so far (UCLA and Utah, the favorites to end up conference champions). They lost both of their middle blockers from last season (both were All-Pac 12 1st team honorees) to transfer. In addition, their other All-Conference 1st team player, an outside hitter who led their team in kills and points per set last season and from what I understand is also an elite defensive player, has chosen to concentrate on their beach team this season so isn't playing indoors. They also had an incoming transfer from Arizona who was 2nd in their team in kills last season who also decided to concentrate on beach. (Although hopefully it is/ was is not serious and she'll be good to go in Boulder, they also have a freshman outside hitter, who's leading the team in kills per set so far this season, who did not appear in their last match's box score.))

Both games are supposed to be available via free live stream. (More details below.)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado volleyball team returns to action after a week off with a pair of matches against Cal Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at noon here.

Colorado (2-0) is one of three unbeaten teams in the Pac-12 if Stanford is included without having played a match. The Buffs trail No.8 Utah (4-0) in the standings. Cal (0-4) is one of three teams in the conference without a win, including Stanford and Arizona.

SCOUTING CAL

Cal is searching for its first win of the season after facing No.22-ranked UCLA (now 18th) and No.8 Utah. In both matchups Cal took the second set of the first match, including a crazy 39-37 second set win against UCLA. Every second match was a sweep. The Golden Bears are hitting .138 in four matches while their opponents are hitting .321.

The team is led by Lydia Grote and Katarina Pantovic with 32 and 30 kills, respectfully. Grote also leads the team with a .299 hitting percentage. On the defensive side of the ball, Bella Bergmark has a team-best 12 blocks and Lexi Gruszczynski has 36 digs.

Don't know if it's a coach's decision or health-related, but two different starters for the Buffs, as Kuehl is starting instead of Hart as one middle blocker and Neverdowski instead of Alcantara as an outside hitter. (As I type this, Alcantara is now in.)

It's 7-6 Buffs early.

Buffs lose a tight 1st set 24-26.

As @Bmixer noted, Meegan Hart is in street clothes. I believe the announcer said she is injured, but should (or was it may?) only be out 2 weeks (or so?).

For the 2nd set, Alcantara is in the starting lineup.

Buffs come back STRONG to tie the match by taking the 2nd set 25-15.

(Looks to me like whoever's doing volleyball's twitter account needs to get together with those from other teams to get some graphics going. Also weird that, unlike prior seasons, and for all the other Buff teams, they don't include a tweet with the starting lineup.)

Buffs get the 3rd in dominating fashion 25-10 to go up 2-1. Finish it off NOW Buffs!

Note- the announcer has said that the Buffs did get permission (I believe they said from Boulder County) to have 100 fans at the match today. Sounds like the permission was given recently, as he looked around and GUESSED there might be only 25 or so actually there.

We're going 5, as Cal ups its play and the Buffs, after 2 easy sets, seemed to relax early and had some sloppy points, and the Bears get the 4th 22-25.

Sorry to quote myself, but did want to mention that, late in the stream, the announcer did clarify that the 100 spectator limit only allows for family and friends of the team to attend matches.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team defeated California, 24-26, 25-15, 25-10, 22-25, 15-6 here Friday night at the CU Events Center.

Colorado (3-0, 3-0 Pac-12) has now won its first three matches for the third time in four seasons, but is 3-0 in conference games for the first time since 2001. Cal dropped to 0-5 both overall and in league play, as the Buffs have now defeated the Bears 10 times in the last 13 meetings.

The Buffaloes snapped a 10-match losing streak when they lost the opening set, dating back to the end of the 2018 season; CU was 0-8 in such situations last season (2019).
...

The second of the two-match set between the Buffaloes and Golden Bears will be this Sunday with a Noon (MST) start, thus avoiding a conflict with the Super Bowl that kicks off around 4:25.

NOTES: Colorado, in its 35th season as a varsity sport, will be shooting to open a season with four straight wins for the sixth time in its history and for its eighth 4-0 start in conference play, last achieved in 1998 when the Buffs opened 7-0 in Big 12 conference matches … Colorado now leads the all-time series with Cal by a 12-7 count (10-7 with both as members of the Pac-12); the Buffs lead 8-3 in Boulder … Alexia Kuehl CU's 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman, made her first career start, subbing for an injured Meegan Hart at middle blocker … The 25-10 margin in the third set was CU's largest since a 25-7 edge in the second set of a 3-0 win over Maryland-Baltimore County in September 2019 … Jesse Mahoney is now 72-57 as head coach of the Buffaloes in five seasons at the reins of the program (41-19 at the CU Events Center, 18-14 in matches that go five sets) … Boulder Country Health officials gave the go-ahead for a handful of friends and families of the coaches and players to attend the match … Cal had opened the year with two losses each to No. 22 UCLA and No. 8 Utah (outscored in games, 12-2), while CU swept Oregon State (6-1 in games) and was off last week as the schedule had called for two matches at Stanford before the Cardinal canceled their first four of the season due to COVID issues … The Buffs head out on the road for the first time this season after Sunday's match, with contests at Washington State on Feb. 11 and 13.

In the shot they showed of the crowd, the first shot had 4 people. 3 of them had the masks on wrong. There were 4 or 5 rows until the next group.

The announcer said that Danielle Price opted out.

The announcer didn't know the time between sets 2 and 3 is 5 minutes, not 10. He said it was shorter due to covid.

It was a fun match to watch. Rachel Fara is a beast. Hit .667 for the match. She is getting her master's degree in chemical engineering and has applied to get her doctorate.

really like Fara. She has been a difference maker this year an she is so physical at the net. Did not know what she was studying but good for her. The team looks bigger and stronger. I remember seeing Kuekel last year and she look so thin, she looks like she has put on some thickness and it just looks more like a pac 12 team than last year

I read about these student athletes and appreciate the fact that they do so outstanding well both athletically and academically.

The Buffs are up 16-11 in the scoreboard- there's now been an ~10 minute delay, evidently (maybe per the announcer?) because of a question on one team or the other's rotation error.?.

Edit- and after all that time- nothing changes,
