BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team will kick off the 2019 Pac-12 conference schedule this Wednesday and Friday with trips to Salt Lake City and Corvallis to take on No. 18 Utah and Oregon State.

Colorado (8-2) is coming off of a perfect 3-0 weekend in the Colorado Classic Tournament. The team set a school record for a four-set match hitting percentage against Oakland at .490, led by tournament MVP Meegan Hart's .833 school record individual hitting percentage in a four-set match and for a sophomore. Senior Justine Spann had more than 50 kills in the tournament and freshman Sterling Parker hit greater than .400, with all three being named to the All-Tournament team.
...

The team plays both matches at 7 p.m. MT on Wednesday and Friday and will be on Pac-12 Network.

SCOUTING THE UTES
Utah (8-3) is on a three-match losing streak after starting the season 8-0. The team picked off former No.7 Kentucky in the first weekend in a sweep, followed up with a five-set win against No.23 Cal Poly. The final win came against Pepperdine, then the team lost three straight to former No.6 Pitt, Cal Poly and former No.12 BYU. All three matches went four or more sets with the Cal Poly rematch coming in a five-set loss.

Utah is hitting .248 this season while holding opponents to a .161 hitting percentage. The Utes' block will be the largest obstacle as the team is averaging 3.2 blocks per set behind Berkeley Oblad's 55 and Phoebe Grace's 52 this season. On the offensive side of the ball, All-American Dani Drews leads things with 181 kills and is averaging 4.5 kills per set. Outside of her, outside Kenzie Korber has 126 kills, then the production drops off significantly with Oblad third on the team with 83 kills.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Oregon State (6-5) is on a three-match losing streak after coming to Colorado last weekend and dropping a five-set match at UNC, a four-set match to No.22 Colorado State and a four-set match to Cal Poly. The team also has losses to Oklahoma and Indiana, with wins against New Mexico, Gonzaga and Seattle most recently.

The team is led by Maddie Goings and Kory Chesire who have 103 and 102 kills this season. The Beavers are hitting .229 this season with opponents hitting .200. They are averaging 2.71 blocks per set behind three individuals with just over 33 blocks this season.

CU is not ranked this week which does not bother me but Oregon is and they are 4-5. That seems weird.

Obviously VERY early, but Buffs take an early timeout as the utes get the 1st 4 points in the 1st set.

May be near a (unfortunate) record, as the Buffs already take their 2nd timeout as the utes match starting point run is now 7.

Definitely one of those times I appreciate volleyball uses sets rather than just points, as the Buffs get rolled in the 1st 11-25.

Come back strong Buffs.

The Buffs, with I'm sure some assist from tough serving, are the beneficiary of multiple ute hitting errors early in the 2nd. Timeout utah as the Buffs lead 6-1.

The utes tied it at 12, the Buffs came on to get a few point lead back a few times, but now it's tied again at 18. Timeout CU.

Buffs fell back quite a bit in the 3rd, but the utes call a timeout as CU goes on a nice little point run. Utes still up 16-19.

Buff block coming alive and they take a 21-20 lead in the 3rd. utes take their 2nd timeout.

Utah completes the sweep- it was 25-23 in the 3rd.

Good to see the Buffs playing them tougher after the 1st set. (Assume there were some nerves with the 1st Pac match, especially for the younger players.)

kind of thought this would happen. I think this year will be up and down with this young team. Need to play well against Oregon St this weekend

They looked lost in the first set, like wide eyed freshmen. Then they seemed to get their act together better for sets 2 and 3. Utah is a good team and was definitely the better team last night.

Re tonight's match- just to support what might sometimes be thought to be a cliché- you'd better not take ANY matches for granted in the Pac 12. OSU, picked to finish last in conference, beat their rival (and #24 ranked) Ducks in 5 last night. To keep the clichés going- the Buffs had better bring their "A game" tonight.

CORVALLIS, ORE. – This Friday the University of Colorado women's volleyball team travels to Corvallis, Ore., to take on Oregon State, but for freshman defensive specialist Savannah Perry it will also be a sort of homecoming.

Like some students walking the campus, Perry is a legacy with numerous family members having graduated from CU. Perry's story is a little different though, as she is the great granddaughter of former CU football coach and Hall of Fame member Dal Ward. 22 members of her family have attended CU following Ward's employment. His name and likeness is forever instilled in the Buffs culture after the academic building on the North end of Folsom Field was dedicated in his name.

"It's really special, every time I walk in see his picture on the wall," said Perry. "His picture is also up in the Events Center so I try to look at it every time I come in, knowing that he is looking down on me and he is proud of me and that I get to continue his legacy. He left such a great legacy at the University, I want to make my own but I also want to build on his."

Perry moved back to Corvallis with her family when she was four and lived there for 10 years. She has deep roots in the area, including being coached by Oregon State's assistant volleyball coach in club. Her return home will be something special as family members and friends return to her great grandfather's alma mater to watch Perry take on the Beavers in a Buffs uniform.

"I love Corvallis, even though I don't live there currently, that's where I consider home and where I grew up. I played in Gill (Gymnasium), I use to have gymnastic competitions there, have private volleyball lessons with the volunteer assistant at Oregon State. It is really cool that he (Ward) also played in Gill. I have played and now I get to go play a real volleyball game there. It is really cool to go and compete where he did."

Ward, a native of Oregon, began his college football career at Oregon State in the 1920s where he started every game of his career and was eventually inducted into the OSU Hall of Fame in 1997. As of 2007, he was one of only three multi-sport athletes inducted, having earned eight varsity letter in football, baseball and basketball where he was a captain of all three squads.

There is no easy match in the Pac-12.

So much for watching much college football or any B1G volleyball for the time being. Dish and Fox Sports are having contract issues and the channels are no longer in my lineup. I didn't even know Fox had anything to do with the B1G

Do not know the connection between Fox and B!G network but I have a feeling this will not last long. Dish will lose to much money not having fox during The NFL season and people start cancelling. The game will be tough. I see Oregon St beat Oregon the other night. Need our freshman to play at a higher level than wednesday

I just got home, and it's tied 1 set to 1, as the Buffs just lost the 2nd 18-25 after winning the 1st 25-22.

Justine was playing out of her mind but was getting very little help from the rest of the team. Poor serve receive by the others; poor defense by the others; lack of a block after the first set. Really need to be working on serve receive and defense

yeah, not a good match. As Jesse said after the match. They have to concentrate and do the little things right and when they do they are a good team.

The team has not blocked well all season. Spann can not win matches by herself.

It's hard for freshmen to replace All Americans.

Hopefully they can get better before next weekend.

think the lack of real competition except for CSU may have lulled them into shining they were better than they are. They will be better by the end of the year, hopefully they will make a huge leap by next week

Iowa didn't provide much competition but the Illinois match was supposed to. I think Illinois is still ranked, but their season has been disappointing for them so far.
