The soccer team (6-2-2 overall, 0-1 in conference) goes on the road for the 1st time in Pac 12 play this season, and it should be a fun challenging one, as they start off with a Thursday night match against the #15 ranked WSU Cougars (7-1-1, 1-0), and then head off to Seattle to face off Sunday afternoon with the RV (Receiving the 27th most votes in NCAA D1) Washington Huskies (6-1-2, 0-1).

Both matches are scheduled to be available to watch on live streams. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Cubuffs.com Preview was released later yesterday for tonight's match - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/9/28/soccer-buffs-looking-to-reset-in-the-palouse.aspx

"
PULLMAN, Wash. — Head coach Danny Sanchez and the Colorado Buffaloes will be six days removed from the controversy of last Friday's match against Arizona State when they take the field against No. 15 Washington State on Thursday (8 p.m. MT/Pac-12 Networks).

In a single-match week, the Buffs dropped a heartbreaker to the Sun Devils with nothing that was in the team's control. A last-second score from ASU left the Buffs ablaze without the opportunity to even the weekend with a second match.

Now Colorado (6-2-2, 0-1-0) has Washington State (7-1-1, 1-0-0) on its plate after the Cougars went from unranked to No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches poll this week.

"The great thing about the Pac-12 is you have 11 quality NCAA Tournament teams," Sanchez explained. "There are always opportunities. We know the quality of Washington and Washington State. We feel they are both NCAA Tournament teams this year. We have a great opportunity on the road to hopefully get some results and some needed momentum before we head back to Prentup next week."

The Cougars are coming off a 1-0 win at Oregon State to open the Pac-12 season last Friday. WSU has not yielded a goal in its last three matches, outscoring opponents 9-0. The Buffs have only scored one goal in the last three matches against WSU, including a 4-1 loss the last time CU visited Pullman in 2019.

"They [WSU] are a great team," Sanchez added. "They are on a really good roll right now. They don't give up a lot of goals and are very dangerous on the attack. It's a huge challenge for us but it will be a great atmosphere on Thursday night so we're looking forward to it."

CU will hope to keep its scoring on track, boasting a Pac-12 best 33 goals this season. The team also leads the Pac-12 in total points (95) and total assists (29). Junior Shyra James is second in the conference with 1.00 goals per game and third in total goals with 10. She's already set a career-high in points with 21, also tops in the conference. Civana Kuhlmann is right on her heels in third with 18 points (7 G, 4 A).

The Cougars are led by Margie Detrizio and her 18 points (7 G, 4 A). WSU boasts four shutouts this season and is fifth in the Pac-12 with.889 goals against average.

Colorado will head to Seattle to close the weekend against at Washington on Sunday.

I had no idea of what the NCAA rules were as far as red cards and subsequent match(es) that then had to be missed. Per the nice buffzone.com (Pat Rooney) preview for tonight's match (https://www.buffzone.com/2022/09/28...punch-to-high-scoring-colorado-womens-soccer/ ), which mainly is a profile on Jenny Beyer, it does note she's (only) going to have to miss tonight's match due to the red card she was given after arguing with the referees at the end of the ASU match after the controversial ASU match-winning goal was awarded. It also says she "is expected to be back on the pitch when the Buffs complete the trip on Sunday afternoon at Washington.".

Assuming the NCAA follows FIFA laws (more or less), Beyer would only be suspended for one match, so it makes sense that she would be eligible to play v Washington on Sunday.

Taylor Kornieck again called up to the National Team for this big international window with matches v England and Spain as they prepare for next summer's World Cup in Australia & New Zealand.

In one of the stereotypical soccer (and some other sports) stories, WSU has huge advantages in every statistical category***, EXCEPT for the one that matters- it's still 1-0 Buffs at the half.

(***WSU leads 17-5 in shots, 5-1 in shots on goal and 4-0 in corner kicks.)

Highlight of the goal-

And, Dani Hanson's been tough in goal, which I'm sure is even more impressive given the VERY wet conditions. One of her saves -

CU is doing a better job than in recent matches of being physical in their defensive half of the field and this they've limited WSU chances.

Glad that Civana is able to play and Jade Babcock-Chi came off the bench in the first half.

I just don't understand soccer rules sometimes- a long WSU pass goes looping into the box and SOFTLY towards goal, one of their players runs into our goalie, but the pass goes in and is allowed- no goalie interference called.

It's 1-1 in the 78th minute.

Overall, got to be considered a solid result (especially given the statistical disparity), as the Buffs end up tying #15 WSU (who had won 7 straight) in their house, with 1-1 being the final.

Now they need to recover and bring their best against the Huskies on Sunday!

1-1 final score. Buffs lucky to not to have lost by two or three goals, at the same time, I am not sure about the goal WSU scored. Looked like Dani Hansen was fouled.

CU was massively outplayed in the second half giving up chance after chance.

For the second consecutive conference match the Buffs conceded a controversial goal in the second half. Fortunately, they didn’t lose the match this time. CU 1, WSU 1.

Props to Civana Kuhlmann for taking her one clear chance very well and finishing in the 11th minute. Collecting the ball in the box running to her left and then hitting the shot with her left foot she found the left side of the net. Two Wazzou defenders may have obstructed their keeper’s line of sight just as Kuhlmann hit the ball.

Unlike the loss last week to Arizona State, the Buffs were more physical with WSU in the first half and thus really limited the quality of their shots, most of which were off target or blocked.

THe second half was very different for both teams. ASU was able to hold more possession and create a number of quality chances. CU, much like they have in recent games, were not able to string passes together or create scoring opportunities. Some of the stats tell the story here. WSU had 12 corners and nine shots on goal to CU’s one corner and two shots on goal.

Ironically, Wazzou’s goal came in the 78th minute when Bridget Rieken hit a flighted cross into the box where it looked like Dani Hansen was going to make a play on the ball only to be run into by another WSU player. A foul wasn’t whistled and the ball bounced into the net.

Sunday afternoon CU’s trip to the NW will be completed with their match v Washington.

The match has begun and Washington has scored to make it 0-1 around 10 minutes in.

Live stats are frozen in the 31st minute, but unfortunately looks like the Buffs are down 0-2 at the half.

Pending a miracle comeback, doesn't look good in this one as it's now 0-3 huskies with only ~21 minutes to go.

The Buffs (Webb) did get one goal, but udub also got another, so 1-4 is the final.

Going to have to shake this one (and the 2 other Pac matches where the Buffs were possibly screwed out of 3 points) and get ready for the Oregon schools, who are heading to Boulder next weekend.

I didn't get to watch much of this match, so I can't comment on the details. But the Buffs are in in big trouble in terms of making the NCAA tourney.

Yesterday, in what I believe was the 2nd official RPI release of the season, the Buffs are at #61 - https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi

Interesting to me that because of the Washington schools' good records (and possibly aided by how their prior opponents may have performed this past weekend?), in spite of their 0-1-1 weekend, the Buffs actually moved up quite a bit from the initial (9/25) RPI release, which had them at around #77 or 78 (per ).

For those who don't know, probably one of the best soccer bracketologists I've found online, Chris Thomas, says at http://rpiford1wsoccer.blogspot.com/2022/09/current-actual-rpi-ratings-for-games_27.html , that at the end of the regular season, historically:
  • An RPI of 30 or below has guaranteed an NCAA tourney bid, while
  • the other at-large bids are usually chosen from among teams that are somewhere within the 31-57 range.
  • Looks like it might not be a realistic consideration for CU this season, although there are many matches left, but he also says that to earn one of the 16 seeds (and therefore have the chance to host the opening 2 rounds of the NCAA tourney), a team has had to end the regular season with an RPI or 26 or better.
