BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team seeks its first conference win of the season when it hosts Arizona Friday at 7 p.m. (MDT) and Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m. (MST).

The Buffs (8-12, 0-10 Pac-12) are on a 10-match skid, the third-longest streak in school history. Despite this, they are still ranked 69th in the nation in RPI but need to finish with a .500 record to be eligible for postseason competition. The team has the added benefit of closing out the second half of conference play with six matches at home.

Colorado has struggled to find an offensive presence in the Pac-12, averaging less than 12 kills per set while opponents are averaging 15. Justine Spann has been the largest contributor with four kills per set in conference play. Sterling Parker is second with 65 kills while Elissa Alcantara has 47 and both are averaging more than two kills per set.

The team has also struggled in efficiency with a Pac-12 hitting percentage of .178 with opponents hitting .282. Meegan Hart, Jenna Ewert and Parker are the only Buffs in conference hitting greater than .200, led by Hart's .291.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Arizona (12-10, 2-8 Pac-12) is coming off its second conference win against Oregon at home. The team's only other Pac-12 win was against Colorado at home at the beginning of October in a sweep. Paige Whipple leads the team with three kills per set but has a .100 hitting percentage. Middle Devyn Cross has 91 kills and a .406 hitting percentage, making her one of the biggest threats to the Buffs. The Wildcats as a team are hitting .187 and allowing opponents to hit .243. UofA is averaging 12.5 kills per set led by senior setter Julia Patterson who is averaging just under 10 assists per set.

Defensively, Emi Pu'a leads the team in Pac-12 play with 131 digs (3.64 per set). The Wildcats blocking has taken a significant hit in conference play at just 1.6 per set led by Cross' 25 total blocks.

SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
Arizona State (13-8, 5-5 Pac-12) is on a three-match win streak that includes back-to-back reverse sweeps when they were down 0-2 to Washington State and won in five and repeated the process against Oregon at home. They also swept Oregon State at home.

The team is without a definitive star but has five individuals averaging between 2.03 and 2.58 kills per set led by Jada Burse's 2.58. All five hitters are between .183 and .230 hitting percentage as well. The Sun Devils are hitting .227 as a team with opponents hitting .251 in conference play. Defensively, Courtney Leffel commands the back row at 4.11 digs per set. ASU also struggles to block with just 1.78 team blocks per set compared to their opponent's 2.44.

Vs. Arizona (Friday, 7:00 PM MT) : Match is being shown live on the Pac 12 Arizona channel. For those whose Cable/ Satellite/ Cord Cutting subscription includes access to that Pac 12 channel, assume the match can also be streamed through a link at https://pac-12.com/womens-volleyball/event/2019/11/01/arizona-colorado .

Vs. ASU (Sunday, 1:00 PM MT) : Match will be viewable via a free live stream available at https://pac-12.com/live/cubuffs (as well I assume somewhere on the Pac 12 App?).

Live stats for both matches should be available at https://cubuffs.com/sidearmstats/wvball/summary .

Buffs fall apart late in the 3rd after leading 23-20 with the last 4 points scored by arizona being on Buff hitting errors out. We're going 4 as the Buffs lose a tight 4th 23-25.

CU is still obviously still fighting hard, and hopefully can finish it off NOW in the 4th.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team picked up its first win in conference play Friday evening in a five-set, 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 15-11) thriller against Arizona in Boulder.

Colorado (9-12, 1-10 Pac-12) had a quartet of freshmen lead to the win over the Wildcats (12-11, 2-9 Pac-12), led by Elissa Alcantara's career-high 22 kills with an outstanding .425 hitting percentage. She led all players with 23.5 points and even added to a pair of blocks and dished out an assist.

Joining Alcantara was Sterling Parker who hit .364 for 16 kills. The quartet was completed as both Alcantara and Parker subbed out with Jill Schneggenburger and Katie Lougeay, respectfully, to give CU a 1-2 freshmen punch in the front row offensively and stout defense in the back row. Both Lougeay and Schneggenburger had 10 digs in the match and Schneggenburger added a pair of aces.

Colorado was also led by Meegan Hart who had 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage along with six blocks. All of the offense was generated by Jenna Ewert who was an assist shy of tying her career-high, totaling 61 total assists in a double-double performance with 11 digs along with five blocks.

The Buffaloes passing game was on point tonight led by senior libero Rachel Whipple's 24 digs. She and Hart also added a pair of aces. Colorado put together a complete match with solid passing leading to wonderful decisions by Ewert and capitalized by strong hitting from the freshmen duo of Parker and Alcantara.

On The Match

Well, a little monkey off our back so I happy to get the win. I thought we started the match out really strong, we were serving and passing really well. We thought that they were going to short serve us a lot which they did but we handled that really well in the first two sets. They got away from it as the match went on because we were siding out at a really high level. That's a really good team that is really well coached. They have a couple of starters out with injuries, so they have done a really good job with what they have. They are really efficient and block especially well. I thought that we had a chance to get them in three but we lost a little bit of our composure. But I thought that we played a great fifth set and closed it out. Now we get to celebrate it for a couple of hours then get back to work.

On Dealing With The Losing Streak
Regardless of our record or the scoreboard, we show up every day and work hard. I have been especially proud of that, I don't think that anyone has tossed in the towel. You can see Justine Spann limping off the floor tonight, she is putting her body on the line. Daniel Price was also putting her body on the line. Rachel is asking for extra reps during the week. I mean we are trying to get better so really happy about that. We have a lot of young player that this is a new experience for. Most of them are used to winning a bunch so dealing with that and the growth process that we are going through is stressful. I think that they are doing a really good job growing through that process.

On Carrying This Momentum Into Pac-12 Play
We can play at a really high level, we have shown that in a couple of matches. We have top 25 wins on five with Cal on the road, we can do a lot of good things. We just have some lows that we have to find a way to get out of and that is what we are working on every day. This team is really good about match preparation and really good about knowing what they should be doing and why. When we do that, we can be really successful.

On The Freshmen
We have seven freshmen, four of them who play fairly consistently. Jill started out as a six rotation outside and did a great job early. She had to deal with some injuries and she is doing a really nice job in the back row for us. Alyssa, like we mentioned, had some monster matches, this match for over 20 kills and hitting four hundred or whatever it was, that is really hard to do. And then we have Katie who missed the first month and a half of the season with an injury. She is coming back and has given us a lot of stability in the passing lanes. Savannah has come off the bench to serve and has done a really good job there. Sterling should be in here as well, she had huge numbers. When she is good, we are really good. Our younger kids are going through the process and growing up; they are going to have some highs and lows but eventually we are going to have more highs.

Zoe was dressed and participated in the warmups so I would guess not injured. I think when Katie returned to the lineup, Zoe got bumped from the role she had been playing.

BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes women's volleyball team put together its second consecutive win in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) sweep against Arizona State Sunday afternoon in Boulder.

Colorado (10-12, 2-10 Pac-12) pulls into a tied for 11th in the Pac-12 and earn their first sweep against ASU (13-10, 5-7 Pac-12) after dominating the floor with a .287 team hitting percentage and holding the Sun Devils to .147 hitting.

The largest contributor to the Buffs' success today was middle Meegan Hart who put down 11 kills without hitting an error for a .688 hitting percentage. The redshirt sophomore also added a pair of aces and helped with a block assist. She was joined by Justine Spann and Elissa Alcantara who each had seven kills, along with Sterling Parker's six.

Setter Jenna Ewert had another huge night with a double-double to lead the team in both assists and digs. Ewert dished out 26 assists, put up a dozen digs and had five kills without an error for a .556 hitting percentage.

On the defensive side, Danielle Price led all players with four blocks and added a pair of kills on two swings for a perfect hitting percentage. Rachel Whipple tied Ewert with a dozen digs and added an ace.

The Sun Devils struggled to find offense against the Buffs' block, working three different setters out in their 6-2 system and even running a rally without a setter in all together. The team found success after bringing in Noa Miller in the second set and starting her the third. The sophomore had 11 assists. Senior outside Ivana Jeremic had eight kills for a .316 hitting percentage while Iman Isanovic had nine kills for a .278 hitting percentage. ASU hurt themselves with 20 attack errors and nine service errors compared to CU's 11 and four, respectfully.

With the wins, the Buffs look to carry the momentum on the road for four-straight Pac-12 matches. Colorado found themselves in a similar situation last season with four Pac-12 road matches and needing to win three of them to qualify for the tournament. This year the team has another four home matches on the back of that and is aiming to get to a .500 winning percentage as they sit two matches back at the moment. The first test will come Thursday evening in Pauley Pavilion against UCLA at 8 p.m. MST.

On The Match
I thought that it was a really fun match to be a part of for our players, the first two sets especially. We played with a lot of energy, we served and passed exceptionally well, and Jenna moved the ball around. It was really fun volleyball to watch. I think that Arizona State is a great team and they're having a great season, they are going to be a tournament team. The third set was a little bit more of a dog fight, and we knew that going in. We knew that they were going to play hard and we had to keep our focus. We lost a little in the middle of it, but we came back at the end and were able to close it out. It was a great weekend, with a weekend sweep, and hopefully it is something that we can build on.

On What The Weekend Sweep Mean For The Rest Of The Season
No one likes to be winless, so it was nice to get the monkey off our back there. It is hard to feel like we are playing well when we aren't getting the results, even though I think that we have done some really good stuff. It is nice to get the result and hopefully that translates into us taking that on the road with us. At the end, we talked about how we have a really high level in us and we need to achieve that high level consistently over time. If we can do that then we can play with anybody.
