Does anyone have any clue what this is or why the players were holding it up at the Utah game?

I read about this. When a player makes a mistake on the field, they are held out for a drive. They also, are required to hold that bar over their heads as punishment. If they let it drop below their head, they must start all over again until another drive has finished.

You serious Clark? That's some Full Medal Jacket (hilarious) punishment right there, if true.

JFC, some of you are gullible. It was Hawk who used to have non-practicing players move a pile of dirt around. Mel is the anti-Hawk.

Ok so what the **** is it then? Apparently they were passing it around and holding it over their heads.

It is a reference to the movie Unbroken. There is a scene where he has to hold a plank above his head in a POW camp to motivate the other prisoners. The item he is holding above his head is a 4x4 wood plank, it's shining because it is wet. They only did it for this game.

Source: Asked a friend that plays football for CU, he isn't sure why they did it. But that's the answer.
