Figured I'd start this thread now as the 1st news has been released, the announcement of which Buffs will be competing in what events at next week's Western region preliminaries (prelims, in that well-known western hub of Fayetteville, Arkansas, (I'll probably put the actual announcement news in a separate post so as to keep this initial post for links to the Championship preliminaries and, eventually, finals.)

Go Buffs to the 29 student-athletes accepted to compete at the preliminaries!!!

***The USTFCCCA announced via a tweet on 6/7 that Wednesday's main coverage has been moved to ESPN2.

In addition, it looks like, per the ESPN app, that there will be individual feeds for each field and multi-event provided (through ESPN3). Edit - See post #32 for the complete scheduled individual event coverage (including links).

Edit -
Wanted to add that earning All-American status in track and field is very much a meritocracy, with honors purely based on how one finishes in the Championships. The top 8 Finishers in every event in Eugene will automatically be named 1st team All-Americans, the next 8 are 2nd Team and the remaining 8 in Eugene are named Honorable Mention.

Article on the 29 Buffs who've been accepted to compete at next week's prelims. (The top 48 marks in each individual event and top 24 times in each relay for the Western Region who accepted entry in the various events were accepted.)

Note that the multi-events are not competed at preliminaries. Instead, the top 24 individuals based on scores this season who accepted entry will be competing in the finals in Eugene. For CU, sophomore Avery McMullen ended up #20 in points this season in the women's heptathlon, so is the 1st Buff to qualify for Eugene.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will send 29 student-athletes to the NCAA Track and Field West Preliminaries next Wednesday through Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.

The women's squad, fresh off a second-place finish at Pac-12s, will have 16 women competing with 18 total entries, while the men will have 13 men combining for 14 entries.

The four Pac-12 Champions, Abby Nichols, Madie Boreman, Micaela DeGenero and Eduardo Herrera, were all eligible to double up at the NCAA Championships but have all elected to focus on one race. Nichols, who was named the Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Year yesterday, will focus on the 5,000-meter run where she is ranked second in the NCAA and ninth in NCAA history. Boreman will focus on the steeplechase, seeking her third All-American finish in the event. DeGenero, the defending NCAA Mile National Champion, will race the 1,500-meter run only and seek the mile/1,500 double, while Herrera has elected to race the 5,000-meter run as well.

All of the athletes heading to the Preliminaries will seek a top-12 finish to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championship June 8-11 in Eugene. One athlete competing next weekend already has her ticket punched, Avery McMullen. The heptathlete is heading to Eugene in the heptathlon as one of the top-24 athletes in the NCAA. She also was ranked high enough to compete in three events individually at the Preliminaries, the high jump, the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles. After the original list came out Wednesday, McMullen was the first athlete out in the hurdles, but after Thursday she was in the hurdle race and decided to forego the high jump. She will double in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles Thursday, both of which have a 5 p.m. MT start time.

There are four other athletes doubling up in individual events, all in the 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run. Emily Covert and India Johnson will go after the distance double for the women while Andrew Kent and Charlie Sweeney will attempt it on the men's side.

Five other athletes will double up with an individual event and relay, all competing in the 4x400-meter relay. Aaron McCoy, Garrett Nelson, Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak will all compete in the 400 hurdles and their respectful 4x4, while Tyler Williams is racing the open 400-meter dash along with the relay. They are joined by Ian Gilmore, Kellen Monestime, Jaida Drame and Grace Jenkins on the relays.

There are three other field events being competed in along with McMullen's long jump. Dominique Williams will be the first athlete competing at Preliminaries in the men's hammer throw Wednesday at 9 a.m. MT. He is joined by Noah Bouchard in the men's high jump as the CU men in field events. Kylee Harr and Allie Routledge will both be the women's representatives in the field in the high jump.

The rest of the athletes will all compete in one event on the track. In the 10,000-meter run, Austin Vancil, Paxton Smith, Hannah Miniutti and Kaitlyn Barthell will all join the doubling athletes. Gabrielle Orie is joining Boreman in the women's steeplechase while returning All-American Rachel McArthur is joining DeGenero in the 1,500. Noah Hibbard will be the lone male Buff in the 1,500.

The Buffs will all face different qualifying scenarios in their events. The field event athletes will all be competing for a top-12 mark, and in the high jump they will only jump until there are 12 remaining athletes. The sprint and hurdle athletes will compete in the 'first round' of 48 athletes and seek a top-3 finish in their heat or one of the six next-fastest times to move on to the 'quarterfinals'. In the 1,500, the three athletes will be in one of four heats and look to finish top-five in their heat or have one of the next four fastest times to advance to the quarterfinals.

For the 10,000, one big heat will be run with athletes seeking a top-12 finish. In the 5,000-meter run and 1,500 quarterfinals, two heats will compete with athletes needing a top-five finish or next two fastest times to advance to Eugene. The rest of the sprint races, relay and steeplechase will all compete in three quarterfinal heats needed a top-three finish in their heat or next three fastest times.
...

All of the events will be live streamed on the SEC Network, available to ESPN+ subscribers.

From the National Weather Service (https://forecast.weather.gov/MapCli...SA&textField1=36.0718&textField2=-94.1557&e=0), looks like the 1st 2 days, especially, are predicted to be rather cool, with it comfortable on Friday and then warm (esp. with what I assume will be high humidity). Hopefully they can get tomorrow in timely, as the dreaded (for outdoor sports) possible thunderstorms are referenced:

"
Wednesday
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 68. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Wednesday Night
A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Thursday
Showers likely, mainly before 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 62. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Thursday Night
Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
Friday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
Friday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 54. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
Saturday
Sunny, with a high near 84. South wind 5 to 10 mph.
Saturday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 64. South wind around 10 mph.

How is Fayetteville, Arkansas in the West?

I thought that was funny too.

In the NCAA's defense, I was curious so did a quick Google search and per a map I found, based on population of the 48 continental U.S. states, Arkansas would be a border state on the western side of the U.S. (Source - )

So today Avery and Miceala along with Abbey and the distance runners. #GoBuffs

FYI: I considered Arkansas to be in the South. I've been there. It's definitely southern.

Article after yesterday's events. (Bummer for Buff Andrew Kent in the 10000M, who looked to be in decent shape until he got tripped by a fallen runner in front of him with only a mile or so to go and fell too far behind to have any chance to come back. Hopefully he isn't hurt and can come back in the 5000M he qualified for on Friday.)

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Colorado men's track and field team advanced two 400-meter athletes to Friday's quarterfinals here Wednesday in the first day of the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Tyler Williams and Aaron McCoy both advanced, Williams in the 400-meter dash and McCoy in the 400-meter hurdles. Both men finished fourth in their heats with Williams running the 20th-best time in the first round at 46.43, while McCoy advanced with the 19th-best time in the hurdles at 51.43 seconds.

Both men had to wait a while to find out their fate, having both come in the first heat of six. They were a part of the next six fastest times to advance, and now have a busy Friday with their quarterfinal races and the men's 4x400-meter relay.

The CU women take over tomorrow beginning with Avery McMullen in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. Micaela DeGenero and Rachel McArthur will then compete in the 1,500-meter run first round before Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak compete in the 400-meter hurdles. The evening ends with the women's 10,000-meter run where Emily Covert, India Johnson, Hannah Miniutti and Kaitlyn Barthell will all look to finish in the top-12 and advance to the NCAA Championships.

BOULDER – University of Colorado track and field senior Micaela DeGenero was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Seven First Team, the association announced Thursday afternoon.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America program is the longest-running and most prestigious academic and athletic award for student-athletes. All nominees must have a GPA of 3.30 or above and be a starter or important reserve in their respected sport.

DeGenero was the 2022 NCAA Mile National Champion and has a 3.90 GPA pursuing her Master's in Technology, Cybersecurity and Policy. She had a 3.69 GPA in her undergraduate program.

DeGenero earns her first CoSIDA Academic All-District selection with the Buffaloes after she earned her second All-American finish this indoor season. In 2021, DeGenero finished as an All-American in the outdoor 1,500-meter run and continued her season into the USATF Olympic Trials where she was a participant in the 1,500. DeGenero will compete in the 1,500-meter first round this evening at the NCAA West Preliminaries where she is a favorite to advance to the quarterfinals and ultimately to the NCAA finals in Eugene.

DeGenero will automatically be eligible to become an Academic All-American. The District 7 is composed of 12 women and 11 men from Division I schools in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Colorado track and field program advanced Emily Covert and India Johnson to the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships here Thursday evening in the women's 10,000-meter semifinal at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

The redshirt freshman Covert never fell out of qualifying position in the race, finishing sixth overall in 33:45.65. Johnson, a junior, battled back from the middle of the pack to finish 10th overall in 33:52.44.

At the halfway mark in the race, Covert made a move to the front to push the pace, then with 2,000 meters remaining followed a chase pack of eight. By the bell lap she was safely in fifth and cruised to a qualifying spot. Johnson made a similar move, keeping with the chase pack before taking the front of the pack to finish in her qualifying spot. Both women will also run in the women's 5,000-meter run Saturday.

Also in the race, true freshman Hannah Miniutti finished 32nd in 34:57.44 while Kaitlyn Barthell finished 40th in 35:57.19.

Three other CU women advanced to quarterfinals to keep their NCAA Championships hopes alive. Micaela DeGenero took the top spot in the women's 1,500 heading into Saturday's quarterfinals along with teammate Rachel McArthur who finished 20th.

DeGenero took to the front in the second heat and stayed there for the first half of the race. On the final curve she took the lead, then temporarily allowed a runner by her before ultimately taking the final lead in the last 20 meters. Her time of 4:17.78 was the top qualifying time of the afternoon. McArthur was in the final heat and started in around third. She took the lead in the bell lap, fighting a group of five down the backstretch. Around the final curve she held inside position but allowed runners to pass her on the homestretch as she was safely in qualifying position at 4:20.93 seconds.

The other woman to advance was Abbey Glynn also advanced in the women's 400-meter hurdles, finishing third in her heat for an automatic qualifier spot and 16th overall in 58.04 seconds. Her teammate Emma Pollak finished 35th in 59.79 seconds. Both women will be in the 4x400-meter relay Saturday.

The day started out with Avery McMullen doubling in the women's 100-meter hurdles and women's long jump. The sophomore didn't have much time between the two events as she was in the last heat of the women's hurdles when the third heat of the long jump began. McMullen ran 13.95 in the hurdles to finish 43rd overall and jumped 5.96 meters (19-6.75) on her third and final jump to finish 30th in the long jump.

The sophomore was the first Buff with a ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, having qualified as the 20th-best heptathlete in the NCAA. She opted out of the women's high jump that she was also qualifying for on Saturday in the West Preliminaries.

The final two days of the NCAA West Preliminaries are set with six men and a relay competing Friday along with 10 women and a relay on Saturday. Tomorrow will begin with Noah Bouchard in the men's high jump at 2:30 p.m. MT, followed by Tyler Williams and Aaron McCoy in the 400 and 400 hurdle quarterfinals, respectfully. Eduardo Herrera, Andrew Kent and Charlie Sweeney will all race the 5,000-meter semifinal before Williams, McCoy, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson and/or Kellen Monestime finish the meet out with the 4x400-meter relay.

Unless the men's 4X400M team pulls a major upset, looks like the Buff men's team is going to be shut out of the opportunity for any of them going to the Eugene Championships final, as in an upset, none of the 3 entered in the 5000M advanced. Heartbreaking in the 1st (Slower) heat, as the 2 Buffs in that heat (Kent and Herrera) finished in 6th and 7th (less than 0.2 seconds behind 5th), with only the top 5 earning automatic qualifiers to Eugene.

With one heat still to go, the men's 4X400M team is already eliminated from consideration as one of the time qualifiers. They still ran a GREAT race, finishing with a season's best of 3:05.50 which, per the Buff record books (https://cubuffs.com/sports/2004/2/11/track-field-records.aspx), looks to move them up to 2nd all-time at CU. (The fastest was a 1994 team that included the later infamous Carruth.)

I misspoke above (after a couple disqualifications). Great news on the advancement to Eugene!

FAYETTEVILLE – At the 11th hour, the University of Colorado men's track and field team secured a bid to the NCAA Championships here Friday night in the men's 4x400-meter relay.

The men originally finished fifth in the first heat, running the second-best time in CU history of 3:05.50 seconds. After the three heats finished, CU sat 13th overall and was looking at the first NCAA Championships without a CU man since 1991. A late protest disqualified UCLA and BYU from the first heat for stepping outside the lane line, moving the Buffs up to the third automatic qualifying spot in the heat.

Facing the end of the team's season, the final attempt to earn a spot in Eugene came down to the quartet of Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson and Aaron McCoy. After the first handoff the Buffs held the lead with Williams handing off to Gilmore. Gilmore held the lead until the final 30 meters when he was passed as the Buffs fell to fourth handing to Nelson. Nelson was passed on the backstretch and handed off in sixth after having to battle by teams. McCoy took the stick on the anchor in sixth but was unable to catch the front pack as the top four teams all finished under 3:04. McCoy finished fifth in the heat as the Buffs ran 3:05.50.

Williams opened the race running 46.45 on the lead off leg, followed by a 46.24 second split by Gilmore. Nelson was clocked at 47.05, followed by McCoy anchoring with a blistering 45.51 split.

The men's 4x400-meter relay is the first men's relay to advance to the NCAA Championships since the 2010 men's 4x100-meter relay.

McCoy and Williams both ran earlier in the day in the individual quarterfinals as well. Williams went first in the men's 400-meter dash, finishing 20th overall in 46.13 seconds. McCoy finished 16th in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 51.26 seconds.

The highest individual finishers for the men were Andrew Kent and Eduardo Herrera in the first heat of the men's 5,000. The two went out in the first heat and took the early lead with Kent and Herrera trading leads for the first six minutes. The Buffs lined up shoulder-to-shoulder to help box out some of the athletes moving up on the outside, but they continued to drop. At the 10:30 mark, Kent made a move to the front with Herrera following behind him. They held that until with 500-meters remaining Herrera took the lead. He was passed on the homestretch as the men fell down to sixth and seventh with Kent running 13:39.32 for sixth in the heat and 13:39.49 for Herrera in seventh.

The second heat went out much faster with Sweeney working to stay on the back of the lead pack. With 800 remaining, the pack picked up the pace as Sweeney crossed 14th in his heat and 28th overall in 13:55.27. Kent and Herrera were bumped out of the time qualifier, falling to 14th and 15th, respectfully.

Also for Colorado, Noah Bouchard cleared 2.05 meters (6-8.75) in the men's high jump to finish tied for 36th.

The women take to the track tomorrow already with three tickets punched to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The women will have a pair in the high jump, 1,500 and steeplechase and three in the 5,000. Abbey Glynn will also compete alone in the 400 hurdles before finishing the meet in the 4x400-meter relay.

Both Buff women (DeGenero (1st place in heat 1) and McArthur (4th in heat 2) auto-qualify with top 5 finishes in the 1500M quarterfinals to advance to Eugene!

And the Buffs also go 2 for 2 in advancing runners to Eugene in the 3000M steeplechase, with Boreman auto-qualifying by finishing 2nd in heat #2, while Orie is the fastest time qualifier (running out of heat #1) in a PB (personal best) time!

Another NICE Buff race, as sophomore Glenn sets a big personal best (over a 1/2 second better than her previous best) to earn the 3rd auto-qualifying spot to Eugene (7th fastest time overall in these regionals) in the 3rd heat of the 400M hurdles!

Looks like her time also moves her up to #2 all-time in the Buff record books.

As the Regionals come to a close, it's been a very good day overall for the Buffs, with another 3 Buffs qualifying for Eugene in the 5000M, with Nichols (1st in heat 2) and Covert (5th 4th in heat 2) auto-qualifying, joined by Johnson who qualified on time out of Heat 1. (Both Covert and Johnson were doubling back after already qualifying for the 10000M finals this pastThursday, so props to them for having the legs left to qualify for a 2nd race at the Finals.)

And, for the 2nd time in 2 days, a Buff 4X400M relay team, this time the women, advances to Eugene after somebody protested the results for another team that had initially qualified. (Initially, the Buffs were the 1st team to miss out on qualifying, but it looks like Iowa was disqualified.) The team also set a season's best in the Buffs last event of this meet.

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Colorado women's track and field team advanced eight student-athletes and a relay to the NCAA Outdoor Championships here Saturday evening.

Colorado was perfect on the track in individual events, advancing all eight women that ran, then finished out 12th in the 4x400-meter relay to qualify.

Defending NCAA Mile National Champion Micaela DeGenero was the first Buff to qualify through, winning her heat in the women's 1,500-meter run in 4:18.93 seconds. She started the race sitting in second but quickly fell to eighth. Waiting and watching, DeGenero moved up to third with 500-meters left, then tried to take the lead at the bell from Stanford's Christina Aragon. DeGenero was finally able to make the pass down the backstretch with 200-meters remaining, then Arkansas' Krissy Gear tried to steal the win before DeGenero kicked past her in the final few meters.

In the second heat, Rachel McArthur sat fifth through the first 300 meters before falling to seventh halfway through the race. She was sixth with 500-meters remaining when a group of eight women broke out at the bell. She quickly moved to fifth with the group, then passed up to fourth in the final homestretch where she crossed fourth in 4:19.55 to secure her second bid for the Buffs in the 1,500-meter run.

The track turned to the steeplechase where Gabrielle Orie went out in the first of three heats. Orie started out eighth and moved up to sixth a quarter of the way into the race. A group of five broke out as Orie lost contact with the pack, but she passed a runner in the final lap to finish fourth in the heat in 10:03.31. She had to wait two more heats, but finished ninth overall with the fastest time qualifier.

In the second heat, Madie Boreman took the lead and stayed there for most of the race. She strung out the pack to five halfway through the race, then had dropped it to four with three water jumps left. With 500 meters left, Wisconsin's Alissa Neggemann took the lead from Boreman, who safely cruised to second in 10:02.36 seconds.

Abbey Glynn was next, running a clean race through the first 300-meters in the 400-meter hurdles. She was third coming off the curve and was temporarily passed by an athlete, but was able to pass for the third automatic qualifying spot in the final 10 meters
of the race. She crossed in a new personal best of 57.05 seconds, bettering her second-best mark in CU history.

The final individual event was the women's 5,000-meter run with India Johnson and Emily Covert doubling back from their 10,000-meter qualifying marks along with Abby Nichols who is second in the NCAA in the event. Johnson was up first in the first heat, sitting 12th through the first mile. She worked her way up lap-by-lap, then dropped a 73-second last lap, the second-fastest in the heat as she crossed the first line in sixth in 16:16.83. Like Orie, Johnson had to wait to see if her time would good through.

In the second heat, Emily and Abby made their way up to fourth and seventh in the first lap. The two Buffs began running shoulder-to-shoulder in the first 800 meters in the seventh and eighth positions. With a faster pace than the first heat, Nichols moved up to third while Covert was in 11th halfway through the race. Utah's Cara Woolnough took the lead and pushed pace, forcing Nichols to move to second to cover and Covert to make her way up the pack to sit third. With three laps remaining, a pack of four emerged with two Buffs in qualifying. The pack built a quick 10-meter lead, then Covert fell off the pace and dropped to fourth as Woolnough and Nichols pushed on. Nichols held onto Woolnough through the bell lap, passing her in the final homestretch and cruising to the win and top qualifying time in 15:49.51. Covert finished fourth in 16:05.75, and Johnson picked up the final time qualifier with a 12th-place finish to advance.

The night ended with the women's 4x400-meter relay as Grace Jenkins, Emma Pollak, Jaida Drame and Glynn finished sixth in the first heat in 3:34.47 seconds, the second-best time in CU history. Unfortunately, they were out of the time qualifying positions after the second heat and were 13th overall with three heats completed, one spot out of the time qualifier like the men were the previous night. Following a protest, Iowa was disqualified from the second heat for stepping outside their lane, bumping the Buffs into the NCAA Championships and giving CU a perfect day on the track.

Two other Buffs competed Saturday in the women's high jump. Allie Routledge was unable to clear the opening height of 1.66 meters (5-5.25), while Kylee Harr cleared 1.66 meters and 1.71 meters on her first try before hitting the bar three times at 1.76 meters (5-9.25). Harr finished tied for 24th in the event.

The Buffs advance nine women to the NCAA Championships with 11 total individual entries and both the men and women's 4x400-meter relays. The 12 women that are heading to Eugene tied the most in CU history and the 12 events that will be is a CU record, beating the 1996 women that had 11 entries with 12 women.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Wetmore

On The Women's Perfect Day
"That's a success rate we would like to maintain."

On The Women's 1,500
"We hoped to get them both through. The NCAA is getting better and better. What used to advance easily does not anymore. Micaela looked quite easy. Rachel's been dealing with a little lower leg problem and bit the bullet hard and still got through for us so the 1500 was as successful as we could have hoped for."

On The Women's Steeplechase
"We were confident that Madie could get through barring any big mistake or mishap. Elle ran as well as she ever has, she might have PRd by a little bit I think in difficult, windy and warm conditions. Got a time qualifier and is of to Eugene and we are very, very pleased."

On The Women's 5,000
"We were confident again, as we were with Madie, that Abby would advance barring a problem. She looked very controlled. Ran down the leader right at the end just for fun. And then India and Emily doubling back after a very hard 10k the other night, surprised us a little bit. We thought maybe they could get through and on a night when people were going fairly fast, hot and humid, they both ran very well and doubled their qualifiers."

On Abbey Glynn And The 4x4
"Abbey had an excellent day because I don't know if there was an hour between the 400 hurdles and when she ran her fastest time ever, got a qualifying mark, came back on the relay and split 51.3 or 51.4. She ran great, but the three women in front of her also did. They ran their fastest time of the year, one of the fastest times ever at CU. Then another little miracle at the end, some team got DQd, we moved up a spot and off to Eugene."

On Both Relays Advancing By Protest
"I don't know if we've ever had one, and so to have two in the same track meet is certainly rare. Unique in our case, and we'll take it."

On The Meet Overall
"That's a fair question because well the women had an excellent meet, the distance men weren't what we hoped for. It was a combination of some bad luck, but also some race tactics we wish we could have back and try a different way. Certainly Andy Kent had a lot of bad luck. He gets knocked down twice, neither of which were his fault. Then comes back in a tactical 5k and just misses. He actually had a good weekend for us just an unfortunate weekend. And then Lalo was a disappointment, but maybe I should have given him a different race strategy. Anyway, the women were great, the men weren't perfect, but overall we're quite happy to be advancing who we did. The men's relay was very good. One of our fastest times ever. Both of Burke's teams are through which I don't think that's ever happened in my time here. More good than bad."

I've updated the original post with info on the Finals (as I've mentioned many times, in Eugene as is the case most years) as there's at least a few links and some info available. (More links will be added as they become available.)
