OFFICIAL CU vs Utah game thread 10/25/25

It was a bit more complicated than this. This was not long after I graduated and I followed it closely. Mac recommended Bob Simmons (from his staff...it would have been our first Black head coach) but the entire planet was harping on and on about the Wunderkind we had on staff (Skippy) and if we let him go we'd never live it down. So to avoid looking like they didn't know what they were doing...they ended up making a move that proved it.

Then the guitar playing started...and the water rafting...and the discipline eroded and Skippy loved recruiting the skill positions, but less enjoyed recruiting the big Hogmollies...and the rest is history.

(also, to be fair, I don't think Bob Simmons as our head coach would have worked out so well either. It should have been Barnett...)
I was thinking about Barnett and how good he is at analyzing whatever is going on with the Buffs. He sees the issues we have and he was a helluva coach. I was wondering if Prime ever talks X’s and O’s with GB and, if so, he values what a guy like GB has to say?

GB respects HCP as a person and for what he has done to lift up the program. As for being a coach, Gary is too nice a dude to say what he thinks out loud.

It would have to be Prime approaching GB and asking him to be candid. And I don’t think Prime would do that.

It should have been Barnett. Mac saw the lack of opportunity for Black coaches and wanted break that down. Simmons ended up a head coach and was okay but nothing close to what Barnett and some other members of that staff turned out to be.

Skippy was the wonder kid buy nobody took him that seriously except Betsy Hoffman who he charmed into giving him the job. He was the wrong choice but at the same time Hoffman unlike Gordon Gee was listening to the anti-football voices at the university and it would have been hard for anyone to succeed long term with her there.

It is in no way insane to recognize Cignetti is elite. Do me a favor and don't try to put words in my mouth. He set the bar. You can pretend it doesn't exist if you want. He isn't a unicorn, Bob Stoops won a NC at OU in his second year.

I never said anyone could just go out and hire the next Cignetti, simply pointing out he is the benchmark for elite now. He is lapping Prime in the W's department. That pretty much says it all, Prime is not elite as a HC and is probably below average based on his record at CU. If that hurts to hear, sorry, it is reality.
Ya'll wild on here. Bob Stoops was coaching Oklahoma. I'll be back after the Arizona game.

@Darth Snow @Da Lama

I’m ready.

OU was .412 for the five years before Stoops, but I am the one you suggest is insane. it is a pretty good analogy, not perfect, but it shows ramping up to MNC levels can be done, not just by Cignetti. I know Prime is your guy, and that is cool, but as much as I hate it for my Buffs, he is struggling. He is the one who said they were going to dominate, not me.

Coach Mac was not a truly great x’s and o’s guy, correct? He was a Prime type of motivator without the NFL career. Our assistant coaches were amazing and did the heavy lifting and Mac motivated them to be superhuman. Prime needs to fire everyone, or send them to a G5 and ask Saban to help get him a whole staff, especially out of fired guys like Saban did so well
One of the great myths. Mac was a pretty good Xs and Os guy - he was the DC at Michigan. If you ever wanted coach Mac to light up get him in an Xs and Os discussion. He did recognized that in order to be a good HC he had to let his assistants do the tactical stuff, but he still keep his hand in the strategy. He also assembled some great staffs, was a great recruiter, and an excellent motivator. To try to make any comparison to McCartney is unfair to Coach Prime at this point in his career.

One thing Prime is missing is that he did not get mentored in the coaching profession. How many of the top HCs spent time as an assistant under a top head coach? Most of them.

Even after coming to Colorado Mac and Bo remained close and Mac did not hesitate to use him as a mentor when facing tough decisions. I don’t know that Prime has anyone with close to the success Bo had in his inner circle.

Saban? Did Prime play for Jimmy Johnson at Dallas? Bobby Cox in Atlanta? I don’t know if that’s the question but rather is Prime humble enough to reach out?

rough weekend lol
I watched CU put out one of the most embarrassing performances in its history on Saturday. Then I wake up and watch Atlanta get spit roasted by ****ing Miami!? I must have committed numerous cardinal sins in a previous life to deserve this weekend of fandom.

Way different working in a system than playing in a system or having knowledgeable friends.

Some post-game thoughts on how the Utah result could --- could -- end up turning into a positive for CU football.

This points to one thing: you were a CSU alum and God will not let you forget it.

I feel you, but you also have to find a way to change the mercenary culture, and that takes more than different coaches. It requires a new recruiting system, where you don’t ignore high school recruits and you don’t expect that can just go out and get 45 new transfers every year.

Agreed 100%.

Why is CU the school where coaches go for on the job training, and at $10 MM/year to boot?

Coach Mac comparisons oare useless, because...portal. If you are elite, you perform like Cignetti.

If you are sub.500 in year three in the portal era, you are below average.
If you have Mark Cuban bankrolling you, you are elite. Fixed your second sentence.

I can literally explain OU situation to you but it wouldn't matter. You have already made up your mind. I don't have time for the foolishness. At this point, no need to spend any energy on this for me.
