The last Buff team still in action this academic year begin its NCAA Championships season tomorrow, as they head off to College Station Texas for I'm sure some nice cool weather racing, jumping and throwing at the Western Prelims being hosted by Texas A&M. (The Championships finals are scheduled to be in Eugene beginning on June 9th.)

Per the Watch ESPN schedule (https://www.espn.com/watch/schedule...04c-341a-ba4a-b7b7e44d41a7/startDate/20210526), those with SEC+ access will be able to watch at least some action each day, with coverage scheduled to start at 5:00 PM MT tomorrow and Thursday and 4:30 PM MT on Friday and Saturday.

As with prior years, of the 48 individuals and 24 relay teams who earned the honor of competing at the prelims, only 12 in each event will be advancing to Eugene. (See https://www.ncaa.com/championships/trackfield-outdoor/d1/road-to-the-championships for the NCAA's description of the process. Also want to note that the Multi-Events (men's decathlon and women's heptathlon) don't participate at the Prelims, as the top 24 scorers in those events from across the nation (none are Buffs this season) who accepted entry into the finals in Eugene have already been designated.)

General scheduling notes - For the 1st time, looks like they've scheduled the Prelims the same way as they have the Championship Finals the last few years, with designated/ separate "men's" and "women's" days. For the prelims:
  • Tomorrow and Friday will be when all men's events are competed, while Thursday and Saturday are women's days.
  • For Wednesday and Thursday, field action begins at 12:30 PM MT and track racing begins at 5:00 PM MT.
  • On Friday and Saturday, field action begins at noon MT and track action at 4:30 PM MT.
  • All field events are competed at one time, so those advancing will know within one competition cycle within an hour or two. For track racing, tomorrow and Thursday are largely just 1st rounds, with only the 10000M races those days being prelim "finals" that determine who will be advancing to Eugene.

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER – Colorado track and field is sending a large squad of 25 student-athletes to the NCAA West Preliminaries Wednesday May 26 to Saturday May 29 in College Station at Texas A&M.

The CU women racked up 16 athletes to the prelims across eight different events. The men are sending nine individuals in five different events. All athletes will be battling for a top-12 spot in their events to advance to the 2021 NCAA Track and Field Championships June 9-June 12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The men kick things off Wednesday with a pair of finals as Dominique Williams competes first in the men's hammer throw finals and John Dressel closes out the day with the 10,000 finals. Ronald Sayles will compete in the 400 prelims while Aaron McCoy runs the 400 hurdle prelims.

Thursday will be the first day for the women as Avery McMullen and Jada Green start things off with finals in the long jump and javelin, respectfully. Action hits full force at 5:30 p.m. MT when Sage Hurta leads a group of four CU women in the 1,500. Hurta, the nation's top-ranked 1,500 runner, will run the prelims with Micaela Degenero, Rachel McArthur and Annie Hill as they all try to qualify for Saturday's final. A few hours later will see Eriana Henderson and Abbey Glynn looking to punch their ticket to the final in the 400 hurdles. The night will cap off with the finals in the 10,000 where Abby Nichols, Emily Covert, Elizabeth Constien and Kaitlyn Barthell will all try and earn a top-12 result to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Friday's finals begin much later at 6:10 p.m. for Sayles in the open 400 and McCoy in the 400 hurdles shortly after. Following that, Eduardo Herrera makes his attempt at another NCAA Championships in the 5,000 finals along with Dressel and Alec Hornecker. Sayles and McCoy will close out the men's competition in the 4x400 relay with a combination of Tyler Williams, Kendal Smith and Ian Gilmore at 8:15 p.m.

The final day of competition for the women starts out with a bang as the women's 1,500 finals begin at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Madie Boreman and Alisa Meraz-Fishbein run the final of the steeplechase at 5:10 p.m. followed by the 400 hurdle finals. Nichols, Hill and Barthell will have another opportunity at an NCAA Championship bid in the women's 5,000 final at 7:30 p.m., followed by Henderson and Glynn joining Tamia Badal and Jaida Drame in the 4x400 relay final at 8:15 p.m.

All of the action will be live streamed on ESPN+ and the SEC Network plus with live stats available here.

Article after yesterday's action.

(Congrats to Mr. Dressel for advancing to the finals, and best wishes to him as he tries to double back in the 5000M, and Mr. McCoy as he tries to advance to Eugene in the 400M hurdles.)

"
COLLEGE STATION – Colorado track and field senior John Dressel kicked things off at the first day of the NCAA West Preliminaries here Wednesday evening with a NCAA Championships qualifying mark in the men's 10,000-meter finals.

"John was obviously a seasoned veteran," said head coach Mark Wetmore after the race. "Very calm and patient. Covered all the important moves; ignored the others. I think he had a gear left if necessary. Off to Eugene."

Dressel ran an incredible race, sticking with the chase pack and sitting around 14th through the first 8,000 meters. The senior jumped up to fourth with the final move and closed to finish comfortably in seventh, three seconds ahead of the final qualifying position.

This marks Dressel's second trip to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 after competing in the distance double two years ago in 2019.

CU also had Aaron McCoy advance to the 24-person final in the 400 hurdles after he finished third in the third heat. The top-three marks in each heat qualified through for the final along with the next six fastest times. McCoy ran 51.36 seconds which was tied for the 27th-best time of the day.
...

The women take to the track tomorrow a dozen competitions that all begin with Jada Green in the javelin at 12:30 p.m. MT. Colorado will also compete in the long jump, 1,500-meter prelims, 400 hurdle prelims and conclude with the 10,000 finals at 8:10 p.m.

All of the action will be live streamed on ESPN+ and the SEC Network plus with live stats available here.

Edit- And, article from yesterday evening after the women began their Regional -

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/5/27/track-and-field-nichols-qualifies-for-ncaa-finals.aspx

"
COLLEGE STATION – Colorado track and field senior Abby Nichols became the first CU woman heading to the NCAA Championships in Eugene in June after finishing ninth in the women's 10,000 here Thursday evening in the second day of the NCAA West Preliminaries.

"It's really hot and humid here, nobodies very surprised," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "Everybody was doing the best they could to manage it. It started out a reasonable pace, unlike the men's race last night, this was conservative and careful across the board. Then it wound up, attrition happens. Abby ran a smart race, being careful with a slightly sore leg and being careful of the heat. Through is all you need here, all that matters is top-12. So, very pleased with her and pleased to get her through to Eugene."
...

The CU women put on a show in the 400 hurdles this evening with Eriana Henderson and Abbey Glynn both qualifying through to the finals in fine positions. Henderson posted the fourth-best mark of the prelims in 57.93 while Glynn ran 58.45 to post the seventh-best qualifying mark. Both finished second in their heat, a feat they will hope to repeat on Saturday to punch their tickets to Eugene.

Colorado also put three women through to the finals in the 1,500 as Sage Hurta and Rachel McArthur ran a perfect team race in the fourth heat to take the first two automatic qualifying marks in that heat in 4:19.86 and 4:20.05, respectfully. Micaela Degenero also qualified through in the third heat as she finished second in 4:22.05, good for 18th overall. Annie Hill also ran the 1,500, finishing 35th overall after being a last minute addition as the 48th qualifier. She ran 4:29.84 to finish 35th overall and will turn her attention to the 5,000 on Saturday.

"We were hoping for that," said Wetmore on the five finalists. "I think it was reasonable to hope for those three to get through in the 1500 and for Abby and Eriana to get through the hurdles, so now we have to wait 40 hours and do it again."
...

The men close out action tomorrow as Aaron McCoy competes in the men's 400 hurdle finals starting at 6:55 p.m. Closely behind, Eduardo Herrera, John Dressel and Alec Hornecker will compete in the men's 5,000 final then McCoy will join with Ronald Sayles and a combo of Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore or Kendal Smith to finish out the men's 4x400.

All of the action will be live streamed on ESPN+ and the SEC Network plus with live stats available here.

Just went in to catch a little of the meet and, shockingly for Texas this time of year-

Looks like it's going to be a LATE night for the men, especially the 5000M and 4X400M relay folk.

Looks like they've given up hope on getting any more action in today. (The only things completed today, per live results, were 3 field events (none of which had Buffs participating).)

Coach Lindsay Malone had video of the rain in her Instagram stories. Lightning and pouring rain. No way they could have safely had the events happen.

Unofficially***, they didn't QUITE run fast enough to time qualify for Eugene (missing by less than a second with a 5th place finish in their heat while running faster than a Baylor team which auto-qualified in another heat), but big congrats anyways to the men's 4X400M relay team (believe it was Williams, McCoy, Gilmore and Sayles), as they look to have become the 2nd fastest relay team in Buff history with a 3:06.04 time. (The fastest team is from 1994.)

(***As I type this, the event is showing as being "under review".)

Edit to add associated tweet-

Very nice result in the women's 1500M, as all 3 Buffs who'd advanced from the 1st round also qualify for Eugene. Sage Hurta hung out in the pack in her heat until the last 200-300 meters, then cruised past to earn the win. Ms's. Degenero and McArthur also auto-qualified in 4th and 2nd, respectively, in their heats while also both running personal bests.

2 more very good results for the Buffs as both Eriana Henderson and Abbey Glynn auto-qualify in their heats of the 400 meter hurdles, finishing 3rd and 2nd, respectively, and have earned trips to Eugene!

Ms. Glynn also sets a new personal best.

Wow- what a job by Abby Nichols. After having already qualified for Eugene in the 10000M, she has the power left to run the 2nd fastest last lap in her heat of the 5000M to pass quite a few runners and finishes 2nd in her heat, which will allow her to attempt a double at the Championships final!
(Unfortunately, none of the 3 other men or 2 other women running the 5000M qualify to advance. Especially tough for Eduardo Herrera, who finishes 6th in his (slower) heat, when the top 5 auto-qualify.)

Best wishes to those who advanced- hope they successfully stay healthy and tune everything up so they can give their best performances when the Championships begin in a week and a half!

"
COLLEGE STATION – The Colorado track and field women qualified seven student-athletes through to the 2021 NCAA Championships here Saturday evening at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

The women had a stellar day, qualifying three women through in the 1,500, a pair in the 400 hurdles and one in the steeplechase and 5,000. In total, CU will compete eight individuals in nine events at the NCAA Championships in Eugene.

"The women had a great weekend all the way around," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "Everybody either made it through or ran better than their ranking. Eriana came in ranked 11th so had a good day to make it through but Abbey was a big excitement also getting through. Then Abby Nichols doubling back and running great, very good 5k/10k double for her. So yeah, the woman had an excellent weekend."

The 1,500-meter trio started things off for the Colorado women. Alone in the first heat, Micaela Degenero had to deal with a trio of Stanford and Arkansas runners. She stuck around the eighth spot, then outkicked three athletes to take the fourth-qualifier spot in 4:12.36, passing Christina Aragon of Stanford and Olivia Howell of Illinois.

In the second heat, Sage Hurta and Rachel McArthur went straight to the second and third spots from the gun. McArthur took the lead while Hurta held the final transition with 800 remaining. Hurta took the lead with 200 meters remaining with McArthur in third around the bend, but the CU women finished 1-2 in 4:12.01 and 4:13.25, respectfully.

"That was very big (to get all three women through)," said Wetmore. "We thought each one of them is good and each one of them should be thought of as a contender. But to get three out of 12 is a pretty tall order. It was the highest we could have hoped for and we got it. And they ran fast"

The Buffs women also qualified through both Abbey Glynn and Eriana Henderson in the 400 hurdles. Henderson was the first through, picking up the third automatic qualifying spot in the second heat. She was the beneficiary of a fall by another athlete but would've made it through anyways with her time. Freshman Glynn picked up her first ticket to the NCAA Championships after she finished second in the third and final heat in 58.02.

Madie Boreman is now making her return to the NCAA Championships, nearly four years after her runner-up finish. The senior picked up the first of the 'next three-fastest time' qualifier spots after running 9:50.97 in the steeplechase to finish fourth out of the first heat. Her time ended up eighth overall and was faster than two of the automatic qualifiers out of the third heat. Alisa Meraz-Fishbein also ran in the first heat, finishing 36th overall in 10:37.07.

"She was in the final in 2017 and interrupted in all kinds of ways for a few years," said Wetmore on Boreman's return. "She's worked very hard in the last six months to battle back into this thing. We're pleased that she made it."

Earning her second qualification was Abby Nichols who ran an excellent 5,000-meter race and finished second overall in 15:58.03. Nichols let Washington's Haley Herberg take the lead and work hard, while Nichols stuck with a pack of seven for a majority of the race. Slowly individuals kept dropping but Nichols held on, then with 300 meters left she began to move up the pack. Stanford's Julia Heymach passed Herberg with 200 left in the race and Nichols covered the move and finished the final 100 meters passing BYU's Whittni Orton to finish second.

"Abby ran the 10,000 and ran very well," said Wetmore. "She's been nursing a sore leg a little bit and we weren't sure this was the right thing to do but she said, 'I'm here, let's do it.' And then, once the gun went off, she was just a terrier, she's a quiet killer."

Also for the women in the 5,000, Annie Hill finished 15th in the first heat in 16:39.13 and Kaitlyn Barthell ran 16:43.76 to finish 16th in the heat. The two finished 28th and 31st overall, respectfully.

The women ended the amazing day with the women's 4x400 relay of Jaida Drame, Henderson, Tamia Badal and Glynn running 3:38.42 for seventh overall in the first heat. Their time is good for seventh in school history and finished 17th overall.

"Well the women's 4x4 ran their fastest time of the year, one of the fastest times ever at Colorado and that was not too long after the two women were in the 400 hurdles so all around, very good day," said Wetmore.

Aaron McCoy was the first CU athlete on the track today as the men's finals got pushed to Saturday due to rain on Friday. McCoy finished 21st in the 400 hurdles in 53.26 seconds.

The men's 4x400 of Tyler Williams, McCoy, Ian Gilmore and Ronald Sayles ran 3:06.04 for the 12th-best time on the day, unfortunately not qualifying to the NCAA Championships. Williams had an amazing first leg from the ninth lane, giving McCoy the baton around fourth. The men, who were sitting in a qualifying spot in the final heat, held tight until the handoff to Gilmore where Arkansas snuck by and took the final time qualifier as no more moves extended to the end. The mark is the second-fastest relay in school history.

"The men's four by four finished one spot out," said Wetmore. "They ran the fastest time of the year I think they ran the second fastest time ever in Colorado. And for an hour, the team in front of them was being protested, so it was a real nail biter or perhaps a hoof biter. I didn't see it, Burke didn't see it, it just popped up as under review. Of course you don't want to wish for something bad on somebody else, but if there was a foul or somebody ran out of their lane we'd want our team in. It was a long hour then dismissed but they ran really well those guys."

The men's 5,000 didn't go as well as planned. Stuck in the first heat alone, Eduardo Herrera went out with a slow paced heat and paid for it as he was passed in the final 250 meters by two runners and finished sixth, one spot out from an automatic qualifying mark. The second heat, which included John Dressel and Alec Hornecker, went out much faster to take the two time qualifying spots by six seconds as Herrera finished 15th overall in 14:01.69, followed by Hornecker in 24th in 14:16.43 and Dressel in 30th in 14:25.30. Dressel will be the lone male representative in Eugene after qualifying in the 10,000 Wednesday evening.

"Lalo got stuck in the heat with a lot of really good kickers," added Wetmore. "Then it went slow. He didn't kick brilliantly. But he's looked tired for a couple of weeks, I think maybe I didn't do the year perfectly with him. He was in monster shape in October and very good shape in April, and I think it was just a bridge too far."

"Overall very good day for everyone, one disappointment in Lalo and I got to feel that was on me," said Wetmore.

Colorado will return to action June 9-12 at Hayward Field for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

EUGENE – Colorado track and field sends eight student-athletes to the 2021 NCAA Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the newly renovated Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Buffs will compete one man in the championships, John Dressel, who start things off in the 10,000-meter final late Wednesday night at 8:38 p.m. MT. Dressel is the 17th-ranked individual based on time but is a seasoned veteran that will give a strong push for an All-American finish in his final race on the track as a CU athlete.

Following Dressel's performance, the show turns to the seven CU women in eight events on Thursday and Saturday. Colorado will have an off day Friday in Eugene as there won't be any men competing.
...

All of the days and events will be televised and streamed on the ESPN app in some form. Dressel will be on ESPNU Wednesday evening or ESPN2 depending on delay. Thursday's women's action is all on ESPN2, and the final day of action on Saturday will be on ESPNU. Live results will also be available here.

at around 2/3rd's into the 10000M race, looks like around 14 runners remain in the lead group, including Buff John Dressel, out of 24 who started.

John Dressel with a solid race (and a great time***) finishes in 12th in what was easily the fastest NCAA 10000M Championships race in history, with the top 10 finishers beating the former meet record time.

***Looks like his time (28:03.87) moves him up to 2nd all-time in the Buffs record book, and is his personal best by around 38-39 seconds!

Congrats to him!

EUGENE – Colorado track and field senior John Dressel concluded his lustrous career for the Buffs here Wednesday evening at the NCAA Championships in the finals of the men's 10,000-meter run.

Dressel finished 12th overall in the second-best time in CU history at 28:03.87. The senior was just two seconds off the 41-year old NCAA meet record of 28:01.30 held by Suleiman Nyambui of Texas-El Paso in 1979. Patrick Dever of Tulsa won the race in a new meet record of 27:41.87.

The senior started out the race in 10th, sitting there through the first 10 minutes of the race. A group of 14 athletes broke out through the 5,000-meter mark around the 14-minute mark, an incredibly fast pace that was quickly rivaling the NCAA meet record. With four laps to go the pack broke out with just 11 runners as Dressel led the chase pack nine seconds behind the lead pack in 12th. Dressel finished in that position, nearly catching Iowa State's Wesley Kiptoo who led for most of the race.

"That was a hard one to process," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "John ran his fastest ever, and one of the fastest ever for anyone at CU, maybe second fastest, but 12th will certainly be a disappointment for him, and he will just miss the Trials standard by a few seconds. He had a great career for Colorado, many time All-American, and never ran poorly on a big stage. He has been a great team member. I think he has still some big running coming."

Dressel's mark destroyed his previous best by nearly 40 seconds and took down Ted Castaneda's second-best time in CU history by 27 seconds. Dressel's mark trails only Dathan Ritzenhein's school record of 27:38.50.
...

Dressel was the lone male representative and now will hand off the show to the Colorado women. All seven athletes are in action tomorrow with six in prelims. Abby Nichols will race the women's 10,000 final tomorrow evening at 7:08 p.m. MT.

I watched that race last night - Dressel looked like he was really struggling compared to the rest of the runners so to find out that he got a PR just shows how elite those times were. Looking forward to watching the rest of the Buffs compete. I love T&F.
