Pro Track and Field Buffs (& current Buffs in pro races)- 2022 results, news and highlights (Chicago Marathon Sunday, 10/9, 6:30 AM MT start)

3 #ForeverBuffs getting ready to compete at the World Outdoor T & F Championships. Although the Championships themselves go 10 days, looks like all Buffs will be beginning (and in one case ending) their Championships this weekend.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will have three alumni compete at the 2022 World Athletics Championships starting this Saturday in Eugene.

The World Championships is the first in the United States and will feature more than 2,000 athletes from around the world in 49 events across 10 days.

Colorado has three former Buffs competing after winning their respected nation's championships. Emma Coburn will lead the way in the women's steeplechase after picking up her 10th US Steeplechase title in June, along with Joe Klecker who won his first US title in the men's 10,000 in May and Gabby Scott who won the Puerto Rico National Championship in the women's 400-meter dash.
...

Coburn will start things out for the Buffs Saturday at 11:35 a.m. MT in the steeplechase prelims. The other two Buffs will compete Sunday morning with Scott in the women's 400 first round at 12 p.m. MT followed immediately by Klecker in the 10,000 final at 1 p.m. MT. For the women, the steeplechase finals with be at 8:45 p.m. MT on Wednesday, while the 400 semifinals are right before Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. MT. The finals for the women's 400 is Friday at 8:15 p.m. MT.

Sunday's events will be televised between 2 and 4:30 p.m. ET on NBC, and Wednesday's semifinals and steeplechase finals will be on the USA Network. Sunday's two events can be caught an hour earlier on Peacock and NBCSports.com, both of which will also feature Wednesday's events.

Emma Coburn's semi-final/ 3000M steeplechase heat race is scheduled to begin at 11:35 AM MT this morning, with CNBC showing this morning's session. (Coverage throughout the Championships is on various NBC stations (see below for a helpful link), as well as, thankfully for me, on the Peacock app.) Per https://worldathletics.org/competit...omen/3000-metres-steeplechase/heats/startlist , she's in heat #1 (of 3). Also per that link, "First 3 of each heat (Q) plus 6 fastest times (q) qualify to Final".

#ForeverBuff Kara Goucher is providing expert analysis commentary on the various NBC Network channels for the distance races at these Championships, and is providing a daily schedule for distance races on her Twitter account.

Emma Coburn advances!

As with the other 3 U.S. steeplers, she finished 4th, so just out of the auto-qualifying position. However, she ended up with the 2nd fastest qualifying time of the non-top 3 auto-qualifies, so easily advances to Wednesday's final.

Article after Ms. Coburn's race today -

"
EUGENE, Ore. — Colorado alum Emma Coburn earned a berth in the 2022 World Athletics Championships 3,000-meter steeplechase final Saturday when she finished fourth in her preliminary heat at Hayward Field.

While only the top three finishers in each of the heats earned automatic finals berths, Coburn ran a 9:15.19 in the fastest of the three preliminaries, easily placing her in the group of the next six fastest qualifiers.

Overall, Coburn's time was the eighth-best of the day.

The finals will be held Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. (MT).
...

Two other CU alums will compete Sunday.

Gabby Scott, running for Puerto Rico, will run in the first round of the women's 400 meters at noon (MT). Joe Klecker, the U.S. 10,000 champion, will run in the 10,000 finals at 1 p.m. Sunday.
"

After Ms. Coburn began the Buffs' campaign at the meet yesterday, the other 2 #ForeverBuffs competing at the World Championships race today:
  • at 1:00 PM MT, Gabby Scott (competing for Puerto Rico) is scheduled to race in the heats (1st round) of the 400M sprint, with her showing as being in lane #4 of heat #1 (of 6). (Per live results, ''First 3 in each heat (Q) and the next 6 fastest (q)" will qualify for this Wednesday evening's semi-finals (scheduled to begin at 7:45 PM MT).)
  • at 2:00 PM MT, Joe Klecker is scheduled to be racing in the 10000M finals.

(Note - Main coverage for both of the events containing Buffs competing today is scheduled to be on NBC. Although I'll miss #ForeverBuff Ms. Goucher's commentary on NBC, I may switch over to Peacock's other (AKA International) feed for the 10000M, as they're more likely to show most if not all of the race, not cutting away for ads, interviews or field event updates at vital times like usually seems to happen when NBC covers any longer races.)

Unofficially, Gabby Scott does auto-qualify for Wednesday's 400M semis by finishing 3rd in heat #1!

Sounds like Joe Klecker wasn't ecstatic with his race, but still a solid top 10 (9th) place finish is a solid result for him!

2 #ForeverBuffs in action tonight at the World Championships:
  • Gabby Scott (representing Puerto Rico) running the 400M dash semi-finals starting at 7:45 PM MT. (Per the official start list, looks like she's in heat 2 of 3. Also per that, "First 2 in each heat (Q) and the next 2 fastest (q)" qualify for Friday's final.)
  • Emma Coburn races in the 3000M steeplechase final scheduled to start at 8:45 PM MT.

Overall, coverage of the Championships this evening looks to be on the USA Network beginning at 5:30 PM MT.

Figured I'd update this with news on both ends of the Buff experience, with both #ForeverBuffs and Future Buffs in action.

On the alum-side:
  • Wanted to give a big congrats to Sage Hurta, who won her 1500M race at a meet in Memphis last Friday night while shattering her PR by ~3-1/2 seconds. (That new PR would probably easily be a qualifying time for next year's World Championships, but unfortunately the qualifying period, at least from what I read, didn't start until Sunday, July 31st. Probably not a big deal, as she'll have to run at least that fast if not faster if she wants to be one of the three U.S. qualifiers anyways. (And that assumes she doesn't end up trying to qualify in the 800M, which is what she did at this year's U.S. Championships.))
  • Now I believe a lot of the top athletes have shifted over to Europe where there are 5 or so meets remaining this season in the premiere (Diamond) International track league. I just know about a couple Buffs competing over there over the next week or so:
    • Ms. Hurta is scheduled to race at the Silesia (Poland) Diamond League meet this Saturday at the 800M distance. (Schedule and, when available, results can be found at https://silesia.diamondleague.com/programme-results/programme-2022/)
    • The next Diamond League meet after Poland is always one of the big ones, in Monaco, scheduled for next Wednesday, 8/10 . Emma Coburn is one of the listed entries there in her 3000M steeplechase specialty. (Schedule and, when available, results can be found at https://monaco.diamondleague.com/en/programme-resultats-monaco-en/.)
    • I can't find entries for the later Diamond League meets, but assume the #ForeverBuffs will try to be in those meets if their events are being run and it works for them fitness-wise. (I'd assume the 1st and next major goal for all the top athletes is to qualify for and be in prime condition for the Diamond League Championships, scheduled to be held in Zurich September 7th-8th.)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

On the younger-side, I know of 2 future Buffs who are competing at the Under 20 World Championships, which are being held in Cali, Columbia from August 1st through the 6th. (Comprehensive video coverage has been available so far in the U.S. on the Peacock app.):

  • On the 1st day of the Championships, 2023 verbal commitment Karrie Baloga qualified on time for this afternoon's final in the women's 3000M steeplechase. :Looks like those finals are scheduled for a 4:20 PM MT start.
  • Earlier today, this coming seasons' Buff Addison (Addy) Wiley easily qualified for the finals in the women's 1500M. The final for that competition is scheduled for 3:00 PM MT this Saturday.
Schedule and results for these U20 Championships can be found at https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-u20-championships/cali22/timetable .

Very nice 800M race today in Poland for #ForeverBuff Sage Hurta, as she finishes 2nd only ~0.1 seconds behind only fellow American Ajee Wilson, the defending world indoor champion. Ms. Hurta's time was only 0.1 second off her personal and season record.

Most importantly, this should clinch that she gets to race at the Diamond League Championships in Zurich next month as, per https://worldathletics.org/competitions/diamond-league/standings/2022/women, she is tied for 2nd in points in the event late in the season. (Earlier, I thought I found another standings link that today's meet was the last time a Diamond League women's 800M race was being run this season, but can't find that link now.)

As has been pretty common at these Under 20 World Championships in the distance running events, the women's 1500 meter race final came down to Ethiopia and Kenya, with all their runners (2 allowed for each country) finishing in the top 4. However, incoming Buff Addy Wiley ends up the fastest of the rest, finishing 5th, and I assume should be pretty happy with her time (4:11.43), which is a PR for her at the distance by over 4 seconds, (and would have been the #3 qualifying time in NCAA D1 last season). (Her U.S. high school record in the 1600M set in June (4:26.16) converts to a 4:07.75 1500M per https://ny.milesplit.com/calc?time=4:26.16&event=1600m , but that was in a lower key evening race paced by a pro.)

Now I assume the great CU coaches take over helping her train (although based on her results to date assume she's already been getting great coaching), with the cross country teams scheduled to officially begin racing in less than a month. (Although, my impression is Coach Wetmore and company typically start runners off VERY slowly when they've had a busy summer like Ms. Wiley has had, and she's a freshman to boot, so I wouldn't be shocked if she doesn't toe an official race starting line until very late in the season, if they don't decide to redshirt her.)

I was able to catch the Monaco Diamond League meet this afternoon, and all 3 #ForeverBuffs had what I'd consider solid days (although I'm sure they would find room for improvement). In order of their races:

  • Sage Hurta set another great Personal Record (PR, 1:57.85) in the women's 800M by almost 1/2 second, as she finished 2nd in yet another race against tough competition.
  • Joe Klecker finished 9th in a tough 3000M, missing his PR at the distance by less than 1/2 second.
  • Emma Coburn had to pretty much do the pacing in her 3000M steeple race as the official pacemaker went rather slow through the 1st 1K (Ms. Coburn nudged her a time or two to try and speed her up) before she took over until the last 200M or so, and she still ended up setting her season's best by almost 3 seconds while finishing 4th (and JUST being passed for 3rd in the last meter or so).
(As mentioned in an earlier post, full results can be found at https://monaco.diamondleague.com/en...ule#ScheduleInit#Monaco2022_CURRENTEVENT_JSON .)

Congrats to #ForeverBuff Sage Hurta, and best wishes to her at the Diamond League Finals (which are being held in Zurich September 7th-8th).

This Friday is the Brussels Diamond League meet, the final Diamond League event before the finals in Zurich.

The main part of the meet is scheduled to be available on the Peacock App in the U.S., with coverage beginning at noon MT.

I can see 2 #ForeverBuffs competing in Brussels:
  • At 12:13 PM MT, Emma Coburn in the 3000M steeplechase.
  • Then, at 1:15 PM MT, Joe Klecker is in the 5000M.
In addition to their main goal, which I always assume is just to have good races and race their best, assume both may also be looking at possibly earning enough points on Friday to qualify for the Zurich finals:
  • Right now, Ms. Coburn looks to be just out of a qualifying spot as she's showing in a tie for 11th in the women's steeple standings with 6 points, just 1 point behind 2 runners tied for 10th, with the top 10 in points after Friday earning a spot at the starting line in Zurich. (She's technically in 11th alone right now, as she owns the tie breaker (highest finish in a race in a Diamond League race this season) over the other runner with 6 points.)
  • Mr. Klecker is farther back, in 17th place in the men's 5000M standings, and currently 4 points behind the runner currently in 10th place, so will have to have a GREAT race against a GREAT field in Brussels to even get close to qualifying for the finals.
Note - I'm assuming anyone healthy who qualifies for the finals will likely race in them, but have never looked into how common scratches are.)

(The qualifying information above is my interpretation of rules provided at https://www.diamondleague.com/rules/ , in combination with the current standings at https://worldathletics.org/competitions/diamond-league/standings/2022/women . For each regular season meet event, the winner earns 8 points, with the 2nd-8th finishers earning one less point for each place they finish behind the winner (so that, for example, the 8th place finisher only earns 1 point).)

Track and field season is technically done for 2022, and will be quiet until indoor season begins in 2023. However, marathon (and road racing in general) season is still going strong, and one of the 2 major annual U.S. marathons, Chicago's, is Sunday.

Looking at the list of elite entrants ( https://www.watchathletics.com/article/12180/chicago-marathon-2022-men-s-and-women-s-elite-fields), there are at least 5 #ForeverBuffs scheduled to compete. On the women's side, they are Laura Thweatt, Sara Vaughn, Carrie Verdon and Makena Morley, while John Dressel is racing on the men's side.

Best wishes to all!

Per an information page at https://www.watchathletics.com/schedule/watchlive/6369 , NBC 5 in Chicago is showing and streaming the marathons on their app, beginning at 6:00 AM MT. (It looks like the 1st waves are scheduled to begin at 6:20 AM MT, and the elite runners are in the wave that begins at 6:30 AM MT). It also looks to be viewable on the Peacock app.
