Colorado adds depth to a position of need
There’s nothing wrong with adding smart depth, and Colorado did just that with the addition of graduate transfer linebacker Shaun Myers out of Northern Alabama.
Myers, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker from Clayton, Ohio, is the type of guy who should be able to carve out a role in coverage packages right away. He started 21 games over the past two seasons for the Lions and totaled 100 tackles during that stretch. His 2023 season was his best statistically, recording 46 total tackles, 2 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions — solid coverage production for a guy who projects as a hybrid coverage backer in the Big 12.
Mayers made national headlines in 2023 during Northern Alabama’s trip to Tallahassee to play undefeated Florida State. Myers used a controversial hip-drop tackle to bring down FSU quarterback Jordan Travis, which resulted in the quarterback suffering a compound leg fracture and dislocated ankle. The injury led to Travis’ medical retirement from football and derailed the Seminoles’ season, acting as the main catalyst for the 13-0 FSU team missing out on the College Football Playoffs.
With just one year of eligibility remaining, Myers will likely be used situationally at Colorado, especially with how thin the linebacker room looked coming out of spring. He probably won’t be a name that shows up on every highlight, but he fits a clear need and gives the Buffs another experienced body with solid instincts in coverage.
