Moved for discussion since I know I'm not alone in worrying about attendance this year. Although the #1 worry I have has been the students. Even with the schedule issues, they've been a shell of their former selves.

It is no longer a "cool" thing to do, and I believe the admin has not fostered an environment that encourages the students to show up. Call it bribery if you want to, but it worked.

I bet you half fast would gladly pay for a couple thousand shirts if you let them plaster their logo all over the back of them. Come in with the shirt get a free drink or 10% off a sandwich or something like that.
 
The one thing I cannot stress enough (and yes, I did write this article) is that students have never, ever, ever gone to games over breaks. I have pictures from 2012 and 2013 that prove it if you're curious. The only game you can judge the students for so far is Fort Lewis, and I can hardly blame them for not showing up for that. The BYU game wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. The first real chance for a big student turnout will be Oregon State a week from tonight.

Not that it would have mattered this year, but I does anyone know if the AD tries to sell off a portion of the student tickets over break?
 
In years past, yes. There wasn't great enough demand this year, even for the Utah game, to do that. We all had to claim tickets for the Oregon State/Oregon/Georgia games two years ago so they could sell the rest.
 
Do the students spend much at the concession stands? I think the AD should step up again and get the student section packed and loud. Give shirts away, give other crap away, have drawings. If students DO spend money at concessions, a big increment in that revenue can offset what the AD spends to promote. And longer term a consistently packed student section likely creates demand and filling in the regular seats. And a full, energized student section, full other sections should result in higher sponsor revenue from corporate sponsers/advertisers.
 
Students make the environment. When they're there, the place is electric. When they're not, it's just a bunch of 35-year olds (and older, MUCH older).
The ticket price thing is legit, but by itself isn't the reason for the massive drop in attendance. Get the students back. Do whatever it takes.
 
Absolutely. Student sections are the main difference between a college and pro atmosphere. Part of the "pageantry" that includes school traditions, the band, etc.

I'll take a standing-room-only student section with plenty of empty seats in the rest of the arena every time over the opposite situation.

RG -- do what you've got to do to get students filling their seats.
 
It hasn't helped these big matchups have been on break for the students. A lot of students won't be back until the 10th.
