So happy I get to start this thread, as CU, the Pac 12, etc. have felt it's safe in this pandemic era to post schedules for the postponed 2020 cross country (XC) season, as well as schedules for both indoor and outdoor track and field!

Go Buffs!!!

In this thread, we can discuss anything that happens during the regular season for cross country and indoor track and field.

Since it's a few months off, I will set up a separate thread later near when outdoor track and field regular season starts.

I will set up separate threads for each race and meet when the post-season begins:
  • Per the below, IF the schedule goes relatively as planned, the Pac 12 XC Championships are scheduled for March 5th (in Tacoma), while,
  • at least based on the below, there is no MPSF (Conference) Indoor Track and Field Championships this season, so the only post-conference thread I'll start for that sport will probably be for the NCAA Championships which are scheduled for March 12th-13th in .Fayetteville, Arkansas.

BOULDER — After an abrupt end to the 2020 season last March, the Colorado track & field and cross country programs will get back to competing, starting at the end of January.

The indoor track and field team will kick off the schedule on January 21 at the Air Force Invitational. The three-day event at the U.S. Air Force Academy will include the pentathlon, heptathlon, field and track events, providing a chance for everyone to compete after the extended break in competition.

After the meet at the USAFA, the Buffs have two more indoor meets scheduled in Fayetteville, Ark., the Arkansas Invitational (January 29-30) and the Tyson Invitational (February 12-13). Arkansas is also slated to host the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 12-13.

During the indoor season, CU's cross country teams will begin action, starting on February 5 at the FSU Winter Cross Country Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. Just over two weeks later, the Buffs will have their final tune-up before the postseason begins, racing at the High Roller Invitational (Feb. 20) in Las Vegas.

Washington will host the Pac-12 Championships in Tacoma, Wash. on March 5 and the season will come to a close on March 15 at the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., just two days after the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program returns to the track this week at the Air Force Invitational, marking the first time since the NCAA Indoor Championships were canceled in March of 2020.

The Buffs will send their sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers Friday and Saturday, but prior to that action will begin on Thursday in the first day of the heptathlon for freshman Nick Bianco and the first pentathlon for four others baring the CU jersey – freshmen Elise Gillett and Kara Lucyk, redshirt freshman Jada Green and junior Cheyenne Cheshier. The only Buff with prior collegiate combined-events experience will be sophomore Avery McMullen.
...
"

A few of my own meet specific and general Buff teams notes -
  • As usual in these early meets, it largely features field and shorter distance running athletes. With the traditional strength of the Buffs in the multi-events, but It sounding from the preview like the crew will be largely young and/ or inexperienced, be fun to see how they do.
  • Throughout the indoor season, it will be interesting to see what if any middle distance or distance runners race on the track:
    • Will they all just be fully invested in cross country so no Buffs run in the 800M or longer?
    • Or will some runners, especially those who are more specialists in the middle distances (800M/ mile) , possibly be running more on the track rather than cross country? (Although, with there not being any conference championship in indoor track while there is one for cross country, I assume that may move more runners towards XC.?.)
    • And, health dependent (they both had to miss last indoor track season), 2 of the Buffs who might be most likely to be able to compete at a national level, Sage Hurta and John Dressel, are out of cross country eligibility. Hopefully one or both are healthy and motivated enough to be able to put a good effort towards this indoor season or, if that's not possible, outdoors later in the academic year.
  • From reading the Air Force website, it sounds like they set up a meet just last month, scheduled for Feb. 25th through the 27th, that they hope will take the place of the championships for the many teams, especially in the region, whose conferences have had their own championships cancelled. Although the Buffs don't even have it on their schedule right now, be interesting to see if some Buffs end competing there,

Don't know if it's added thing or I missed it originally- just noticed the Buff schedule has a link for live video coverage for the Air Force meet-

(I've watched a meet or two in the past where the "coverage" is just an unattended camera that just sits there without any movement in the picture, and no commentary. Be interesting to see if this video will just be that or not. Either way, still MUCH better than nothing, and is appreciated!)

Edit - looks like there' also an updated (and more detailed than I previously linked to) schedule for this meet - https://goairforcefalcons.com/documents/2021/1/19/2021_AF_Invitational_Time_Schedule.pdf
In general, it's (All times Mountain):
Today (Multi-events only) - Action begins at noon.
Friday - Completion of men's heptathlon and start of field events at 9:00; Running events begin at 1:00.
Saturday - Field events begin at 9:00; running commences at noon.

Edit 2 - From the Air Force website, Some entry lists are also available:
Thursday (Multi- event competition only) - https://goairforcefalcons.com/documents/2021/1/20/Startlists_Thu_s_Combined_events.pdf

Preview as the men's and women's teams head to Arkansas for the Arkansas Invitational this weekend. This meet should have great competition to help spur the Buffs to some top times and marks.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field is heading to what will hopefully be the first in three-straight meets at the University of Arkansas, the host of the 2021 NCAA Indoor National Championships, this Friday and Saturday at the Razorback Invitational.

The Buffs are coming off of a strong rust-buster at the Air Force Invitational. Things ramp up this weekend as Colorado only has two more meets left on its schedule to qualify for the NCAA Championships. CU will throw it's full force at every event, focusing mostly on sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws.

Possibly CU's strongest bet at an NCAA qualifying time will come in the women's 800 with the season debut of Sage Hurta who hasn't suited up for Colorado in a track jersey since the 2018 NCAA West Preliminary Round. Hurta ran 2:00.99 to win the 2019 Music City Distance Festival 800, an outdoor school record for CU.
...

Colorado will take next weekend off of the track events as the cross country squad opens its season at the Florida State Winter Cross Country Classic on Feb. 5.

Cross country season preview now out in front of Friday's scheduled openers in Tallahassee -

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/2/1/buffs-ready-for-unusual-cross-country-season.aspx

"
BOULDER — While no two seasons are ever the same, the 2020 NCAA Cross Country season will likely be an extremely unique case. The University of Colorado cross country teams will start the 2020 season in February of 2021. And the Buffaloes are not the only team to start the delayed many other NCAA Division I schools postponed the start of several seasons this past fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But there were some schools and conferences that raced their usual season, August through October. But the big prize, the NCAA Championship, did not happen on November 21, 2020, in Stillwater, Okla., as originally scheduled. To accommodate those postponing seasons, the NCAA moved the championship back to March 15, 2021, but kept the location the same.

With so many teams having already completed their regular seasons, there will not be a regional championship following the winter round of conference championships to select the teams that will move on to nationals. Instead, it will be a selection committee.

"This year's selection to the NCAA Cross Country Championships is purely subjective and in the hands of a committee who will meet on March 6," CU head coach Mark Wetmore said. "It will look at the performances of all of the teams in the country going all the way back to September and select the field of 31 teams based on just rankings. All of the conference meets will be the most heavily weighted performance."
...

Another unusual aspect of this season is that the cross country season will be going concurrently with the indoor track season. The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship is scheduled March 12-13, in Fayetteville, Ark.

While it's a little unusual to run two seasons at once, it can't be ruled out.

"Every coach in the country is looking at that chessboard strategically," Wetmore said. "Some I suppose will begin indoor track seasons, see how their individuals are looking, see how their teams are looking, and decide whether to use those individuals in cross country races eventually. We will do it the other way around. We will start with a cross country season. See how the individuals look and see how the teams look, withholding the option of switching somebody like a Lalo Herrera or a Rachel McArthur, quickly over to an indoor track qualifying attempt. But our distance runners are beginning the season as cross country runners."
...

"

Also, not on the original schedule, but it looks like some of the track and field team will also be in action this Friday and or Saturday in Golden.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams are ranked in the spring*** pre-season poll!

(***Added "spring" since some schools (believe at minimum those in the SEC, ACC and Big 12) already had fall seasons which included conference championships. If they choose to do so, they are also competing this spring, many with a goal, I'm sure, of reaching and exceling at the NCAA Championships.)

BOULDER — It will be a busy weekend for the University of Colorado cross country and indoor track & field program with both squads competing this weekend.

The cross country teams will start off the action on Friday, February 5, at the FSU Winter Classic, in Tallahassee, Fla. Florida State is hosting the meet at Apalachee Regional Park, starting at 9 a.m. EST. There are four races, two per gender, and the Buffaloes have athletes entered in the Garnet races. The men will race an 8,000-meter course, while the women will run a 6,000-meter course.

Showers are likely, starting at 7 a.m. EST and continuing through the races. The temperature should be around 60 degrees Fahrenheit when the first race starts and winds are predicted to range from 6-8 mph. Live results can be found at https://live.pttiming.com/XC-PTT.html?mid=2119. There is no live stream available.

Schedule (all times EST):
9 a.m. – Garnet Men's 8,000m
9:30 a.m. – Garnet Women's 6,000m
10 a.m. – Gold Men's 8,000m
10:30 a.m. – Gold Women's 6,000m

CU's throwing, jumps and combined events squads will compete Feb. 5-6, at the Mines Front Range Meet #2, in Golden, Colo. In total, 15 women and nine men will compete in every discipline of field events along with the combined athletes competing in the 60 hurdles.

Action begins Friday at 4 p.m. with all field events, followed by the hurdles at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

More info (From the article quoted below) -
Cross country:

Host's (FSU's) Meet info - https://seminolesweb-8b76.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/2021-Winter-XC-Meet-Information.pdf
Men's main race is scheduled to start at 7:00 AM MT, while the women should start around 7:30 AM MT.
Live timings link - https://live.pttiming.com/XC-PTT.html?mid=2119
The above link does have lists of runners, but for the Buffs it has pretty much everyone on the roster, so can't tell who the starters might be yet. Per the FSU meet info document linked to above, the Buffs can race 7 runners (per gender) "varsity" squads in the top (Garnet) races. In addition, up to 7 more (assuming space is available) per gender could compete in "open" races which are scheduled to start at 9:00 AM MT (men's) and 9:30 AM MT (women's). (The later assumes FSU hasn't changed their minds, as they currently aren't showing any open races in the above Live Timing's link.)

Indoor track and field:
Schedule - https://minesathletics.com/documents/2021/2/3/ITF_Meet2Schedule_Final_2021.pdf (Interesting, with only and all field events scheduled on Friday, and only track races scheduled for Saturday.)
Live results (already includes list of entries and start lists.) - http://results.tfmeetpro.com/Colorado_School_of_Mines/Mines_Front_Range_2_OPEN/
Live video (looks like multiple streams may be available for fans of various field events, with one stream for Saturday's track events. No audio commentary for any of the streams.) - https://portal.stretchinternet.com/csm/

In a season where there are less chances to compete against other top schools, and it featuring a regular (for other sports) selection committee that's going to select NCAA Championships squads, rather than the normal mathematical points system the sport uses in "normal" years, it's important to take advantage of any opportunities to impress, and the cross country teams did that today!

Congrats to the women for the win and the men for the tie for 2nd!

And, in what is almost a cliché when talking about elite programs like the Buffs, some of the hardest (while hopefully still being supportive) competition is who gets to represent the team in the top limited entry Championships at the end of the season, and the 2nd set of races (that followed the "A" races I shared the results with in my prior post) showed there will be, as there always is, many choices for the Buff coaches to make this season as to who will don the black and gold unis at the Pac 12 and, hopefully, NCAA Championships!

Nice extensive article after today's cross country races-

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/2/5/c...in-at-fsu-winter-classic-men-place-third.aspx

"
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — If the start is any indication of how a season is going to finish, it's going to be another great campaign for the University of Colorado cross country teams.

Colorado's women won the Garnett 6,000-meter race at the Florida State Winter Classic on Friday morning, while the CU men placed third in the Garnett 8k race in their first races of the season.

While the competition might not have been what the Buffaloes are used to, there were several decent teams in the mix, including Pac-12 rival Stanford, which bested the men 67-98. On the women's side, it was a narrow victory for CU against the Cardinal, with the Buffaloes earning the 72-77 win.

Individually Eduardo 'Lalo' Herrera led the men with a runner-up performance, crossing in 23:03.4. Rachel McArthur was the top woman, placing fifth overall (20:19.9).
...

"Overall we did a little better than we thought," Wetmore said. "There are a lot of young people when you pour through all of the years [on the results]. You are going to see a lot of freshmen and redshirt freshmen, so good stuff coming in a month and coming in the next few years."

UP NEXT: The Buffs head to Las Vegas for the High Roller Invitational, February 20.

Article from today's indoor field action, highlighted by sophomore multi-eventer Avery McMullen moving up to 3rd all-time in the indoor long jump records. (#'s 1 and 2 are from way back in 1982 and 1996.)

"
GOLDEN – Colorado track and field sophomore Avery McMullen climbed up the record book in the women's long jump Friday afternoon here, moving within four inches of breaking the record.

McMullen had the win from her first jump, leaping 6.02 meters. That wasn't enough for her as she jumped 5.95 on her third jump and then hit the big one on her final jump at 6.04 meters (19-9.75). All three jumps were personal bests for her and she moves to third all-time in CU history with the leap.

McMullen now has the farthest indoor jump for a Buff since 1996, and the third-farthest jump in the past 20 years for a CU woman.

She wasn't alone as Jada Green jumped 5.66m (18-7), Kara Lucyk jumped 5.61m (18-5), Elise Gillett jumped 5.27 meters (17-7.5) and Sarah Aanenson jumped 5.18 meters (17-0).

Another strong showing for the CU women came in the shot put where Lauren Whyrick threw 13.20 meters (43-3.75) and Jada Green threw 12.97 meters (42-6.75). Both are inching closer to the CU top-10 which starts at 45-10.5.

On the men's side, Nick Bianco had strong showings in the pole vault (14-10) and the long jump (21-2.75), both personal bests in a CU uniform.

In the men's throws, Tyler Sconce threw the weight throw 18.24 meters (59-10.25) while Caleb Penner threw 17.96 meters (58-11.25). Neither were personal bests but came very close. Unattached athlete and CU grad transfer Dominique Williams dominated the competition with a bomb of a throw at 19.76 meters (64-10). The mark would have been the second farthest throw in CU history, but unfortunately Williams exhausted his indoor eligibility last season.

Colorado only runs one event tomorrow at Colorado Mines, the 60 hurdles for both the men and women.

Preview for this weekend, with the bulk of the indoor track and field teams competing (mainly field athletes and hurdlers this weekend) are heading back to Colorado School of Mines this Friday and Saturday, while Sage Hurta will be representing the Black and Gold on Saturday at Iowa State.
(Looks like Ms. Hurta's entered in the mile, where I assume she'll be shooting for an NCAA Championships qualifying time (she almost certainly ran an 800M qualifying time last week in her 1st race of the season), while also getting another race "under her belt" as she comes back from injury. Note I might be wrong, as the below preview article says she's also racing the 800M again. However, I don't see her in the Start List for that race, right now anyways.)

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/2/10/track-and-field-buffaloes-competing-at-iowa-state-and-mines.aspx

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field team competes in the Mines Front Range Meet #3 and the Iowa State Classic this Friday and Saturday.

Senior Sage Hurta will be the lone competitor heading to Iowa State where she is entered in the 800 and the mile. Hurta already owns the second-best 800 time in the nation at 2:02.54, ran virtually alone at the Razorback Invitational. She trails only Texas A&M freshman Athing Mu who ran 2:01.07 at the Ted Wilson Invitational at College Station.

The mile mark Hurta searches for is somewhere shy of 4:42, which would put her in the top 10 in the nation. Her personal best in the mile is 4:38.39, all the way back in 2017.

On the men's side, only the throwers, heptathlete Nick Bianco and high jumper Ryan Charles will be competing. Bianco is set to compete in the 60, 60 hurdles, pole vault and long jump. Lars Atkinson, Henry Carlson, Clayton Castro, Caleb Penner and Tyler Sconce are all set to compete in the throws.

The women have a much larger squad competing at Mines, with all the jumps, throws and 60 hurdles in competition. The pentathletes Avery McMullen, Elise Gillett, Kara Lucyk and Jada Green are all competing in the 60 hurdles, high jump and long jump. Green will also compete in the shot put.

Allie Routledge will join the multis in the jumps, while Kylee Harr will compete in the high jump. Cheyenne Cheshier and Sarah Aanenson are competing in both the horizontal jumps.

Bella Braun, Elena Opp, Obi Osafo-Mensah, Jane Powers, Gya'ni Sami and both Meghan and Lauren Whyrick make up the throws crew for the women.

The Iowa State Classic will be streamed on FloTrack.

Wanted to mention for any T & F fans that, like for last week's meet, it DOES look Mines is providing video streams (without any audio commentary) for the meet at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/csm/ . Pole vault (11:00 MT Start- Nick Bianco competing for the Buffs) and track (starting at 1:30 MT) streams will be available.
