Winter 2021 indoor track & field season & cross country regular season news and discussion (Sage Hurta NCAA Indoor Champion!!! final 3/13,5:00)

Sage absolutely crushed the field. Was Alex a rabbit for her?

Based on the times, I'd GUESS so. (Of course, 1% of the time it could also have been injury.)

Another amazing run for Ms. Hurta in, I believe, only her 2nd race (after her 800M Buff record setting performance a couple weeks ago) in a long time. Looks like it's a huge CU record improvement for her, as the CU record books showed her prior mile best as 4:38.39 (from way back in 2017). (She remains at #4 in the CU records book, but much closer behind only 2 World Champions and Olympic medalists in Simpson and Coburn, and a hopeful young pro and Buff great in Dani Jones.)

(I was also following probably the top collegiate meet this weekend, the Tyson Classic (hosted by Arkansas), and Ms. Hurta JUST kept the NCAA lead, as the winner of that race (from Arkansas) just won in 4:31.83.)

"
AMES, Iowa – Colorado track senior Sage Hurta owns the top mark in the nation in the women's mile after running 4:31.80 Saturday here to break the facility record at the Harry Hoak Track.

Hurta had a rabbit through the 709 meter mark at 1:59.45, already six seconds ahead of the rest of the field. In fact, Hurta and the rabbit led by nearly two seconds through the first 209 meters. Hurta cruised to the victory, 16 seconds ahead of second place.

The senior destroyed the nation lead of 4:35.69, set by Arkansas junior Lauren Gregory. She also owns the second-best mark in the nation in the 800, setting up the middle distance double.

"Having the leading time in the mile wasn't my focus, and I won't be heart broken if someone comes along and runs faster," said Hurta. "However, I'm glad that I'll have event options going into the NCAA meet, and a few weeks to get fitter."
...

"Like her 800 of two weeks ago, Sage was without much help," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "She is still rusty, after a long time away from a racing season, but this was a good run. It may end up leading the NCAA, and it is about 4th all-time at CU. The three ahead of her had a lot more help. Now she will do a few more weeks of work, then decide what to race in Fayetteville."

The Buffs also competed in the hurdles and men's pole vault today at the Colorado School of Mines. Avery McMullen led the hurdle crew with a win in the women's 60 hurdles at 8.74 seconds, followed by Jada Green at 8.89 and Elise Gillett at 9.29. Heptathlete Nick Bianco placed fourth in the hurdles and the vault, running 8.66 seconds and jumping 4.41 meters (14-5.5).

Flotrack nicely provides a video of Sage Hurta time trialing her way (with pacer assistance ~1/2 the race) to the NCAA #1 mile time so far this indoor season-

Awesome news for cross country fans that, after having its NCAA Championships behind a pretty obscure pretty expensive pay wall (Flotrack) for at least the last 2-3 years, that starting this year (and going through at least 2023), they are going to be shown somewhere on ESPN's networks (this season's on ESPNU) and/ or streaming platforms!

NEW ORLEANS - The USTFCCCA has combined efforts with ESPN and is pleased to announce that the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be presented live via telecasts on ESPN's linear channels and through ESPN's online platforms through at least 2023.

"We look forward to showcasing the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on ESPNU this spring and in the years to come," said Dan Margulis, ESPN senior director, programming & acquisitions. Both indoor track and field and cross country are scheduled to be in action, with the cross country races I believe being BIG as the Buffs (both men's and women's teams) work towards qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado cross country teams have one final opportunity to race before the Pac-12 Championships on March 5, and this one will be a pretty decent indicator as to where both teams are heading into the postseason.

CU is set to compete at the Battle Born Collegiate Cross Country Challenge, Friday, February 19, at Craig Ranch Regional Park in Las Vegas. USA Track & Field is hosting the event, which has brought in some of the top teams in the nation. There are eight races, split into four colors, with two per gender.

The women's field includes Stanford, Northern Arizona, Washington, New Mexico, Utah State, Boise State and Utah.

The forecast for Friday in Las Vegas is sunny with a high near 66 degrees Fahrenheit. When CU starts its first race at 10 a.m., the temperature is expected to be about 55 with winds from the east around 5 mph.

I'd say a very solid finish for the men in their "A" race, as they finish in 3rd, and individually Eduardo Herrera continues his impressive season, also finishing 3rd. (The "A" women's race looks to be about 5 minutes in.)

In a tight race (only one point different each from 3rd-4th-5th), the Buffs women finish 5th. Their top finisher from their 1st/ last race didn't race today. Hope all is well with her.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — In a final tune-up before the postseason begins, the Colorado cross country teams turned in a pair of top-five finishes at the Battle Born Collegiate Challenge on Friday at Craig Ranch Regional Park in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

CU's varsity teams ran in the yellow races, which were billed as the fastest of the meet. The No. 10 men finished third behind second-ranked Northern Arizona and fifth-rated Stanford. NAU recorded 20 points to win the race, while the Cardinal picked up 48 points. CU ended up with 70 points, besting fourth-place Southern Utah (101) by 31 points.

"Teams are juggling indoor track and cross country and using the weekends however they feel is best for their team to get their people to both nationals," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "So Iowa State was entered here and withdrew. BYU at one time was entered here and withdrew. Notre Dame also withdrew and the Washington men. So the faster men's race was depleted a little bit over the last few weeks."

In the women's race, the No. 5 Buffaloes placed fifth with 102 points, but were just two points from third-place. No. 4 New Mexico won the meet with 60 points, while No. 6 Stanford was second with 85. No. 16 NAU came in third with 100 points and No. 4 Boise State was one point behind with 101 points.

Individually senior Eduardo 'Lalo Herrera turned in the best performance for Colorado's men in the 8-kilometer race, finishing third, while the women were led by graduate transfer Abby Nichols, who finished eighth in the women's 6k race.
...

UP NEXT: The postseason begins as Colorado heads to the Pac-12 Championships at University Place, Washington, March 5. The women will race first at 12 p.m. and the men will follow at 1 p.m.

USAFA — The Colorado track and field team competed at the Air Force Collegiate Open here Friday, posting many personal bests while hurdlers Tamia Badal and Jada Green moved up the record board in the 60 hurdles.

Badal ran a personal best 8.57 in the hurdle finals to place third. Her mark moves her up one spot to eighth on the CU record books with the five-hundredths of a second best. She was joined by Jada Green who placed fourth in 8.71, good enough for 10th in school history. Valerie Welch placed sixth and Elise Gillett finished in seventh.

Preview article out as the indoor track and field team once more heads down to the Air Force this Thursday- Saturday, this time for what will probably be the last indoor meet of the year for most if not all the Buffs competing***.

BIG thanks to the Air Force for all the hosting they've done so far in this pandemic- affected season, and for creating this meet as a Championships style substitute for all the typical "real" conference championships (including the Buffs') which have been cancelled.

***Per the TFRRS performance list (https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/3157/2020_2021_NCAA_Division_I_Indoor_Qualifying_List/2021/i) which is used by the NCAA to select the 16 individuals and 12 relay teams who get to compete at their Championships in each event, Sage Hurta (who isn't competing this weekend) is the only Buff right now who would qualify, as she's got the #1 time in the mile and #3 time in the 800M. (Due to schedules, assume she'll be choosing to race one or the other, not both). As the article I quote below notes, probably Avery McMillan, who currently sits #19 in the women's pentathlon, is the most likely other Buff who might be able to qualify with a great performance Thursday. Although, of course, if any of the top Buffs have a GREAT breakthrough, there might be a chance for them to advance, although with no other athletes being in the top 70, it would take a BIG improvement.

(More on qualifying rules can be found at http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1IT.)

Of course, for all the Buffs competing, it's still about competing for points at THIS meet to help the Buffs have a strong finish, and/ or to try to hopefully get some personal records (PR's) and meet or exceed whatever goals they set before the season began.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field is set to conclude the 2021 indoor season regular season at the Championship At The Peak this Thursday through Saturday, hosted by the Air Force Academy.

The Championships will serve as the replacement as neither the MPSF nor the Mountain West are hosting indoor conference championships this season. All Pac-12 and Mountain West schools are invited along with others such as SMU, Idaho, Northern Arizona, Tulane, Wichita State, Northern Colorado, Grand Canyon and others. The meet begins Thursday with the heptathlon and pentathlon and continues Friday and Saturday. The meet is being run under strict COVID guidelines that limit entries to 500 athletes and only runs four events consecutively with less than 125 athletes at track level at one time.

The meet will be scored with Championship trophies and shirts being given out along with four field and track outstanding athlete awards.

CU is set to compete its full force of athletes across 19 events, beginning with Nick Bianco in the men's heptathlon and Avery McMullen, Jada Green, Elise Gillett and Kara Lucyk in the women's pentathlon.

McMullen is currently sitting one position out of NCAA Championship competition in 17th in the nation with a score of 3846 in the pentathlon. Her personal best of 3914 would move her up to 11th, though there are about a dozen athletes currently sitting with greater than 3800 points between the 11th and 22nd spot in the nation. McMullen's aim will be to break the 4,000-point barrier for the first time, which would put her in the top-10 in the nation. If McMullen were to hit on all her current indoor personal bests across the five events, her pentathlon score would put her at 4047, just 25 points from the CU school record.
...

The meet will be live streamed (goairforcefalcons.com/AFTrackFieldTV) and have live results (goairforcefalcons.com/TrackFieldResults). Following the conclusion of this meet, NCAA Championship hopefuls will continue indoor prep while the rest transition to outdoors that is set to begin March 19-20 at the tentatively scheduled Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder.

Article after yesterday's events-

Last article of the regular season after today's action.
(I think I'm going to include the NCAA Indoor Championships in this thread since I believe the Buffs will only be represented by one athlete, Sage Hurta.)

"
USAFA – Colorado track and field concluded action Saturday evening at the 2021 Championships at the Peak, hosted by the Air Force Academy.

The women placed 11th overall with 22 points scored, while the men placed 13th with 13 points. The largest point getter was sophomore multi Avery McMullen who scored 10 points for the women.

McMullen, who placed third in the pentathlon on Thursday, led the way picking up four more points today as she placed sixth in the 60 hurdle finals with a time of 8.63 seconds for three points. She also picked up a point in the high jump where she placed eighth with a jump of 1.70 meters (5-7).
...

Colorado will send just Sage Hurta to the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 12th and 13th in both the mile and 800. McMullen was in 13th in the pentathlon following her performance Thursday but has since dropped to 20th in the nation following the conclusion of the BIG TEN, SEC and ACC Championships.

Still about a week and a half away, but the 1st news regarding Sage Hurta representing the Buffs at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Teams needed to tell the NCAA who was going to run in what events. Ms. Hurta qualified for both 800M and mile events, but given the schedule it wouldn't make since to race both. The NCAA just released those decisions for the championships (which can be seen at https://www.flotrack.org/events/6866642-2021-di-ncaa-indoor-championships/entries), and it looks like she'll be racing in the mile.

Preview as Sage Hurta heads to Arkansas to represent the Buffs at the NCAA T & F Indoor Championships. As noted below, the prelims for her women's mile is scheduled to start at 6:00 PM MT on Friday, and if she qualifies (she's one of the favorites) the finals are scheduled for 5:00 PM MT on Saturday. (Per the start list in the live results linked to below, she's in heat 2 of 2 Friday evening.)

Per the article, the meet can be seen (via stream) on ESPN3.

"
BOULDER – Colorado track and field senior Sage Hurta will be the lone representative at the 2021 NCAA Indoor National Championships and will compete in the mile this Friday and Saturday.

Hurta enters the final meet of the indoor season with the best time in the nation at 4:31.80. She will compete in prelims Friday at 6 p.m. MT with her eyes on earning an automatic qualifying spot, then look to add her list to the NCAA Champions Saturday at 5 p.m. Hurta's goal on Friday is top-four in her heat or to have one of the next two best times to be one of the 10 that advance to finals.

Less than 10 minutes until the mile preliminaries begin at 6:00 MT.

Again, Sage Hurta is in the 2nd of 2 heats. (ESPN3 streaming link in the post above.)

A little scary near trip or two in traffic earlier in the race, but Sage Hurta ends up cruising with the fastest overall time to win her heat and advance to tomorrow evening's final!

Sage Hurta becomes the 2nd Buff to win an NCAA Champion today (joining skier Magnus Boee) as she wins by ~1.7 seconds after making her move around the half way mark and quickly getting and keeping a 10-20 yard advantage the rest of the way. (Nice running under pressure also, as she breaks her PR (set in February) by over a second.)

Congrats to her!

Ms. Hurta's win earned 10 points for the Buff women, which ends up putting them in a 3 way tie for 20th place overall in the team battle.

Congrats to the Oregon men and Arkansas women for winning the team championships.
