So happy I get to start this thread, as CU, the Pac 12, etc. have felt it's safe in this pandemic era to post schedules for the 2021 men's golf team. (The team typically also participates in many fall tournaments, but I didn't hear of any, other than maybe a Buff team only tourney or two, this past semester. The main fall on-course news, as can be viewed below in the quoted parts of the article, was from some individual Buffs competing in tournaments.)

In this thread, we can post any news and discuss anything that happens related to the team leading up to and during the regular season.

As usual, I hope and plan to set up separate threads for each post regular season tournament which, IF the schedule holds, begins with the Pac 12 tournament that is hosted by Cal this season, and is scheduled to begin April 26rd in Santa Rosa, California.

Competitive Slate Awaits 13 Team Members

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team is set to open its 2020-21 season the latest since the pre-World War II days as the Buffaloes will compete in back-to-back February tournaments in Palm Desert, Calif.

Colorado head coach Roy Edwards is beginning his 15th season as coach of the Buffaloes, as he is fourth in longevity among CU's current coaching staff behind Richard Rokos (skiing, 31st year), Mark Wetmore (cross country and track, 26th season) and Anne Kelly (women's golf, 24th year). Edwards' roster is 13 players deep, as all four seniors from the '19-20 team that saw its season cut short due to the pandemic electing to return for an additional crack at a final season.
...

"We are incredibly excited about the schedule we have put together for the 2021 spring season," Edwards said. "We've got one of the most competitive schedules of any college golf team in the country. We have got a group of guys that are really excited to get out and compete after the season last year that was cut off in mid-March.

"I would like to make a special mention to all the wonderful people in the athletic department that have allowed us to get to this point," he added. "A lot of people deserve credit, but special thank yous to our trainer Kari Kebach and strength and conditioning coach Steve Englehart have gone above and beyond."

There are eight returning lettermen, led by the four second-time seniors, Daniel O'Loughlin, Ross Macdonald, Victor Bjorlow and Andre Leveque; senior Cole Krantz, two juniors, Kristoffer Max and John Paterson, sophomore Adam Matteson and two redshirt freshmen, Jack Hughes and Canon Olkowski.

There are three newcomers to the program, graduate transfer Chris Bornhorst, who comes to CU from Babson (Mass.) College, and freshmen Jacob Mason (Holy Family High School in Westminster) and Ryan Mendez (from San Diego's Torrey Pines High).

NOTES: There were no fall tournaments in college golf due to the pandemic, but many players from around the country competed on occasion in regional amateur events, including many Buffaloes … "Despite college golf being shut down since March, several guys on the team have continued to play high-competitive schedules and their games have really developed as a byproduct of those efforts," Edwards said … Canon Olkowski had the most success, as he finished second on the points list in the Saguaro Amateur Series (which was co-created by Edwards); he had four top 15 finishes in series that spans the full calendar year, topped by a second place finish earlier this month in the Saguaro Amateur (69-69-68—206, -10), one shot out of the lead … Victor Bjorlow tied for second in the Colorado Golf Association's Fall Amateur, where Cole Krantz tied for seventh and Kristoffer Max for 11th; Bjorlow finished third earlier this week in the Copa Andalucia in Spain … John Paterson tied for third in the Fort Collins GCAA Amateur with a 72-68-67—207 (-3) effort … Jacob Mason finished third in the Colorado Junior Amateur (held at Commonground GC in Aurora) … Ryan Mendez tied for sixth in the inaugural Silverado Amateur (Napa, Calif.) … And last summer, Ross Macdonald reached the finals of the Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship for the second time in three years, while Jack Hughes made the semifinals and Andre Leveque advanced to the round of 16 … Daniel O'Loughlin's career average of 71.71 for 98 rounds currently stands as the best in school history, topping Jeremy Paul by one-one hundredth of a stroke (71.72); he is the only player in school history with at least two seasons with sub-72.0 stroke averages, and he recorded three: 71.54 as a sophomore, 71.90 as a junior and 71.65 as a senior.

The team becomes the 2nd to last (lacrosse starts next week) at CU to begin play, as they have a BUSY start to the season tomorrow, scheduled to be playing in back to back tourneys (both in the Palm Springs area) with only one day between them.

(Note- They say below they actually started the season with a dual tourney against Wyoming this past Thursday. However, it was so low key they haven't even posted results, so I'm going to treat it as equivalent to the team sports' often having "exhibition" games/ matches before their seasons start, so I'm considering tomorrow as the REAL start to the season.)

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team is set to finally embark on its 2020-21 season, as collegiate competition has resumed and finds the Buffaloes set to compete in three events beginning this Thursday in Palm Desert, Calif.

Only CU's lacrosse and the outdoor track teams have yet to compete in the 2020-21 school year. When the Buffs open play Thursday afternoon with the first of a three-round creative dual match against Wyoming, it will end a span of 337 days with no collegiate competition for the Buffaloes because of the pandemic.

Colorado head coach Roy Edwards is in his 15th season at the reins of the program, and he potentially has one of his best teams to date. With all four seniors off last year's team opting to return for another year due to the NCAA allowing an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has his largest roster in his tenure with 13 players.

After the Wyoming dual competition, the Buffs open tournament play in The Prestige, Monday through Wednesday of next week; then next Friday (through Sunday), CU will participate in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The Prestige will take place on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West (7,156 yards, par-72), while Wyoming's meet will be on the Classic Club course (7,305 yard, par-72).

Traveling to the Southwest are seniors Daniel O'Loughlin and Victor Bjorlow, both in their second attempts at a senior year, juniors Kristoffer Max and John Paterson, sophomore Adam Matteson, redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski and graduate transfer Chris Bornhorst.

"Needless to say everyone involved in the program is excited to get the season underway," Edwards said. "The team is very motivated to get out and compete as a team again and represent the University of Colorado. We have a wonderful trip to Palm Springs planned that features a match and two of the best tournaments so far this year for us to compete in. Since early summer, the message from the top in our athletic department through our direct support staff has been to find a way to safely play and compete and here we are with the opportunity to do just that.

"A lot of people put in a lot of work and sacrifice to make that happen," he continued. "We thank everyone involved in getting it done for us. The team has been working very hard and we expect a strong spring for many of them, both individually and collectively. If we have a laser-focus on what we have control over – attitude, work ethic, course management, preparation, and others – we will be in position to have a great season. As we have started, the team has done a great job of doing just that."

O'Loughlin has been CU's No. 1 player for the last two seasons, and if his career had ended last spring, he would have finished as the school's all-time stroke average leader with a 71.71 mark for 98 rounds, just edging Jeremy Paul's 71.72 (138 rounds). So he'll have a chance to finish as the record holder with a closer number of rounds to Paul's.

Leaderboard for the Tournament ("The Prestige at PGA West") scheduled to start tomorrow (2/15) - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=21240
(Note - this looks like a LARGE tourney, with 24 schools competing, including 9 (all but Utah and Washington teams) from the Pac 12.)

Possible leaderboard for the tourney ("Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate") scheduled to begin Friday, 2/19 - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=21898

(As I type this, the Buffs sit at +2 for the day and +9 overall, and are in 16th (out of 18 teams), ~1/2 way through their round.)

Looks like the team had one of if not their top finishes of the year!
(They finish in 3rd out of 23 teams, behind only #28 SDSU and TCU. They finish ahead of the other 3 Pac teams competing (#36 Stanford in 5th, Oregon in 8th and UCLA in 17th).)
