Spring 2021 TENNIS regular season news, results and discussion (Buffs end regular season hosting Utah for Senior Day, Fri., 4/16,1:30 MT)

Preview of this weekend's matches, as the Buffs are scheduled to start Pac 12 play against the 2 ranked Bay Area teams - #12 Cal Friday at 1:30 PM MT and #28 Stanford on Sunday starting at 10:00 AM MT. Both are currently scheduled to be played outdoors at their main/ usual South Campus facility.

Note- If I'm reading the below preview correctly, this is the 1st time I've seen an indication since the start of the pandemic that some relatively small number of general fans (Not part of a teams' families or friends) may be able to attend these CU matches LIVE!?!
(This is based on the below saying "Colorado athletics will permit 80 fans total at the South Campus Courts. Priority will be given to the friends and family designated by the student-athletes per NCAA rule.".)

BOULDER — Colorado women's tennis kicks off Pac-12 conference matches this week with two of the top teams in the conference, No-12-ranked Cal and No.28-ranked Stanford, this Friday at 1:30 and Sunday at 10 a.m. if indoors and 11 a.m. if outdoors. Both matches are tentatively scheduled at the South Campus Courts.

Colorado athletics will permit 80 fans total at the South Campus Courts. Priority will be given to the friends and family designated by the student-athletes per NCAA rule.

The Buffaloes (6-2) successfully defeated Air Force after tripping up against the team the year before. Colorado is also coming off of a 4-3 loss to Denver, who is now ranked 46th in the nation.
...

Weather for Friday is set at around 53 degrees and sunny with little-to-no wind, setting up the first outdoor match of the season in Boulder. Sunday's morning match will start out around 50 degrees and work up with a slight 5 mile per hour breeze, still good enough for outdoor CU tennis. For more up-to-date information follow the CU Women's Tennis team on Twitter and be sure to check Sunday morning for updated match times.

SCOUTING CAL
The Golden Bears (6-1) have only a loss against No.6 UCLA by way of a 4-0 sweep but have since returned the favor by upsetting the Bruins 4-3 just a month later. Cal also has a win against No.47 Washington State. Cal has two doubles teams ranked and three individuals, but the ITA hasn't updated those numbers since preseason so they are bit outdated.

SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
Stanford women's tennis is the two-time defending national champion, but that is about it for the Cardinal this season as they just started play with the first match against Santa Clara on Feb. 26. The Cardinal started preseason with four ranked individuals and two doubles teams. Stanford hasn't lost a point with 7-0 sweeps of Santa Clara and UC Davis.

Article after today's BIG win-

"
BOULDER — Colorado women's tennis upset No.12-ranked California, 4-3, here Friday afternoon, marking the highest-ranked conference win in program history.

"We just told the team win or lose this match, 4-3 or 3-4, doesn't matter," said head coach Danielle Steinberg after. "We're so proud of the progress this program made today. You know just stepping on the court and believing that not only we belong, but we can win these matches. That's a huge step forward, huge mental step forward for this team. So proud of them. Obviously everything as always starts in the doubles, and how they stepped on the court today and they stepped in, believing. Good things happen when you believe and you play aggressive. We had them on their heels from the get go. Super proud of everyone. In singles today, everyone played well and even the matches that we lost were good tennis matches. At the end to finish, Ky and Maria, I'm so proud of them and that was very tough."

To say things came down to the wire is an understatement. Down their No.2 singles player Sophia Derivan, the Buffs stepped up and none more than Ky Ecton in the No.6 singles match against Erin Richardson. The junior faced deuce match point – not only for herself but for the match – twice in the second set and battled back to take a 7-6 tiebreaker win seven points to three. Her first clinch-defying point came down 5-4 at deuce, and the next came at 5-6. After Ecton tied up the set count she was unbeatable, taking the next six games to sweep the third set and tie up the match overall.

"Ky comes in every day and works hard," said Steinberg. "It's the same attitude on the court. Win or lose every point you're gonna work hard and stay tough and her attitude was unbelievable. She's always unbelievable. She deserved this win."

During the same time as Ecton's tiebreaker was Maria Campos in the No.4 singles match against Hanna Viller Moeller. Campos was in the driver's seat in the second set, up 5-1 when Bui started to fight. Bui ended up taking the next five games and the lead, but Campos pushed to a tiebreaker where she took a 3-2 lead and never looked back, claiming the second set 7-6(3). Fighting exhaustion, daylight and the pressure of the match being on her back, Campos jumped out to a 4-1 lead quickly. She sealed the win and the match just before 5 p.m., celebrating with her teammates immediately after.

Colorado set up the upset in the most unlikely of ways, with two new doubles teams. With Derivan out, Sara Nayar partnered up with Fleur Eggink in the No.1 doubles match for the first time against the 40th-ranked duo of Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov. The shift switched things up in the No.3 doubles match as Campos and Ecton teamed up while Megan Forster and Antonia Balzert took the No.2 match. Nayar and Eggink took the first match 6-3, followed up by Campos and Ecton clinching the first point with the same score.

"That's a testament to our team," said Steinberg on shifting to new teams without Derivan. "We completely changed the doubles but it doesn't matter because they are a team and they know that they can play with anyone and this is also a testament for all the doubles work we do in practice and I'm glad they got rewarded for it today. It is a step up, we were short carded today and I'm super proud of Ky the way she stepped up like that today."

Cal began fighting back after taking the first three singles matches in the No.5, No.2 and No.1 matches. With Eggink, Balzert and Nayar down and momentum against them, only the loudest Buff could turn things around. Forster took a crucial first set win against No.26-ranked Ivanov in the No.3 singles match, then with Campos and Ecton battling to tie up their sets and give the Buffs hope, Forster turned up the heat and dominated the second set with a 6-3 win and leaving Colorado to control its fate.

The win over No.12 Cal is the first such win since Colorado defeated No.12 William and Mary in 2007. The only high-ranked win came in 1980 against No.3 Trinity. This is the highest-ranked conference win, with the last such win coming against No.14-ranked Baylor in 2007. Not only is it the first win against a Pac-12 California-based school, it is the first time CU has scored more than two points against one of the teams in modern scoring history.

Colorado hopes to continue the magic against No.28 and two-time defending National Champion Stanford Sunday at 11 a.m.

(Be interesting to see how the Buffs compete against Stanford. Surprised, as the 2 time (2018 & 19) defending NCAA champions they're "only" ranked #28. I looks like they EASILY beat Utah Friday, with only one of the singles matches going 3 sets, and in 4 of the other 5 singles matches the Ute player didn't win more than one game in any set.)

Preview in front of the team's scheduled trip to face the Ducks this Friday, starting at 2:30 PM MT. Looks like Oregon does offer a free live stream (link below).
(Assume there's only one match this weekend as it looks like OSU is the only Pac 12 school that doesn't compete in women's tennis.)

BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis team is set to take on Oregon this Friday in Eugene at 2:30 p.m. MT.

The Buffaloes (7-3, 1-1 Pac-12) are coming off a 1-1 start to the conference that included the team's first-ever win over then No.12 Cal and the highest-ranked win in conference history for the program, all despite missing Sophia Derivan from the lineup.
...

The Ducks this season have a 7-2 record with a 4-3 win against Arizona and a 4-0 loss to No.24 Arizona State in conference. The team's only other loss was the season opener against Gonzaga 4-3. The only identical matchup to compare is Oregon's February 26 4-3 win over BYU, a team CU handled 52 just a week prior.

Oregon is led by Janice Tjen, Uxia Martinez Moral and Rifanty Kahfiani. Kahfiani and Martinez Moral have a 6-1 doubles record while Lillian Mould and Tjen have a 7-0 record. Tjen is 8-0 this season in singles while Martinez Moral is 8-1 and Kahfiani is 7-1.

Congrats to the team for starting to get some recognition- hope they build from this, while staying and getting*** healthy, the rest of the season!
(***For those who didn't catch it (I didn't until reading the post-match article after the Cal match), the Buffs were without their normal #2 singles player (who is also normally part of the #1 doubles team) Sophia Derivan last weekend (she leads the team in singles winning % at 7-1, all at #2, so far this season), so their Cal win seems even more impressive to me. Hopefully whatever kept her from playing was minor.)

The team's in Southern Cal for matches against UC-Santa Barbara tomorrow morning and San Francisco (USF) on Sunday afternoon. (USF is also down south and are scheduled to play Pepperdine Saturday. They also had a scheduled match for next Wednesday at Long Beach State cancelled, so the Buffs and Dons look to have taken advantage of open dates and being near each other to schedule a last minute match, which is scheduled to be played near Long Beach in Lakewood, CA.)

BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis returns back to California for a match against UC-Santa Barbara Friday at 10 a.m. as well as adding a match against San Francisco Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.

The Buffaloes (7-6, 1-4 Pac-12) have lost 22-straight points, tying a school record set in 2014. The team will look to rebound after facing five-straight conference opponents. They will look to Sophia Derivan and Sara Nayar to help turn things around, as the duo have a 6-1 record in doubles and have recently been ranked as the 48th-best tandem by the ITA.
...

This is the eighth matchup against UCSB for CU, who has never taken down the Gauchos. It is the third matchup against USF, with San Francisco getting the win last in 2013.

SCOUTING UCSB
The Gauchos have only competed in three matches this season, a 4-2 win against UC Davis, 6-1 loss to Cal and 7-0 loss to Pepperdine. They were down 3-1 against USC when the match was canceled due to rain.

SCOUTING USF
The Dons are 6-3 this season with a 7-0 loss to Cal, 4-3 loss to San Jose State and a 5-2 loss to Cal Poly. They have defeated UC Davis, Fresno State, Sacramento State and Nevada.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis program hosts Washington at 1:30 p.m. Friday and Washington State at 11 a.m. Sunday, both at the South Campus Tennis Complex.

The Buffs (7-8, 1-4 Pac-12) are on a six-match losing streak and host both Washington schools that were ranked by the ITA last week. The Huskies (9-6, 1-5 Pac-12) have also struggled in conference but have a win over the Cougars (10-8, 2-4 Pac-12) while Washington State has wins over USC and Utah.
....

Fans are permitted to attend the events out at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex but are required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Washington started out the season with seven-straight wins before facing Baylor and losing 4-3. Since that loss the team is 2-6 with wins against Arizona and Portland. UW's top line is impressive with No.52-ranked Vanessa Wong at 14-2 in the No.1 singles position followed by Sedona Gallagher owning a 13-3 record in singles play and Sarah-Maude Fortin at 11-4. Wong and Gallagher had a 5-1 doubles record this season.
