Thoughts on the early Big 12 games

Oklahoma State 24, Kansas State 14: Oklahoma State should have won this by a lot more after a mistake-plagued first half, but on the road without their best receiver, Oklahoma State will definitely be happy to escape with a win. They needed a big game from Kendall Hunter to win this and got it, with 143 yards on 28 carries for his 18th career game over 100 yards. For all of Blackmon's absence, the Cowboys other receivers played pretty well, especially Bo Bowling, who used his opportunity to grab eight passes for 92 yards.

Iowa State 28, Kansas 16: Kansas had some hope with a 9-7 halftime lead, but the defensive problems that have plagued them all season showed up in the third quarter, when Iowa State took control of the game with 21 points in the third. Kansas didn't score again until a garbage time touchdown in the final minute. Kansas can probably take some encouragement from playing like it did in the first half--especially on the road--but it was still a convincing loss. Based on how the last three weeks have gone, though, it's definitely a step forward for the Jayhawks. Meanwhile, Iowa State is a win over Colorado away from bowl eligibility. Incredible.

Texas A&M 24, Texas Tech 14: Ryan Tannehill might have put Jerrod Johnson on the bench for awhile with this performance. Texas A&M's closing stretch of its season is brutal, and it needs a win badly in this one, otherwise it faces a very real chance of failing to reach bowl eligibility. Tannehill is the reason the Aggies are up at halftime, completing 24-of-31 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns at the half. For all the Aggies problems running the ball (12 yards on 15 carries), Tannehill has pushed them over the top. They may need that running game to pick up in the second half to play with a lead, though, and stave off a Texas Tech comeback.
