Volleyball Off Season News (Black and Gold Scrimmage 8/19 @ 3:00; 1st match, hosting UNLV, Aug. 25th.)

In the portal. Does the Covid year still apply?

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but for the NCAA eligibility clock (5 years to play 4 with the possibility of an additional year or more for injury exceptions) - it is being calculated as if the 2020-21 academic & athletic year never happened.

Yes, it is. So Jill is hoping for greener pastures for a season.

While Jenna Ewert's transfer to Texas got her a national championship ring, she didn't play much. She didn't play in the in the Final Four. Only played 35 sets all season and had 47 assists on the season. The not playing must have been difficult for her.

For the non revenue sports, I imagine the motivation is either (1) pursuing a national championship, or (2) leveraging that final year of eligibility into a good graduate degree.

Wanted to note the spring training period has begun. (Assume we'll hear what spring training matches are scheduled sometime within the next month or so.)

Also, as I did for soccer when I started their off-season thread, wanted to give a quick summary of the team's past season:

Record - 20-11 overall; 12-8 in Pac 12 play, which equaled them ending up in a 2 way tie (with Washington) for 5th place in the conference. They were 13-3 at home, 5-7 on the road and 2-1 in neutral site matches.
RPI - Before the NCAA Tournament began***, the Buffs were at (and received NCAA tourney spot partially because of) a #44 RPI (per https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi). (***For some reasion, while soccer's NCAA page lists RPI for all schools AFTER their NCAA tourney completed, volleyball still lists the ratings as of the end of the regular season.)

NCAA tournament - The Buffs were sent to a sub-regional hosted by #4 regional seed Baylor, where CU lost in the 1st round to Rice (1 sets to 3, 24-26 26-24 16-25 14-25).
This was the 1st season where the selection committee increased its rankings system so that each of the 4 regions were given 8 seeds rather than the 4 in prior seasons. Under this new system, the Buffs were still unseeded, while Rice was a #5 seed.

Massey Rating - #29 (Unlike RPI, this is the rating AFTER the NCAA tournament concluded.)

Pablo Rating - #28 . (The Pablo ratings are considered the best ratings system per the knowledgeable folks over at the Volleytalk forum. Although the ratings overall are proprietary (they require a premium subscription to richkern.com), per the https://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/92087/2022-ncaa-bracket-massey-comparison?page=1 thread, the Buffs were at #28 after tournament selection (and BEFORE the tournament itself).)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team celebrated their Fall 2022 accomplishments at their year-end banquet in the Arrow Touchdown Club today.

The Buffs closed out the year with a 20-11 overall record, marking the first time the Buffs won 20 matches in one season since 2017. Colorado earned their best conference record since joining the Pac-12, going 12-8 and finishing tied for fifth in the conference. The Buffs' impressive regular season play and crucial wins over ranked teams like No. 19 Illinois and No. 21 Washington helped the team qualify for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2018. The team's defeat of No.21 Washington made program history as it marked the first time that the Buffs had defeated Washington while in Seattle. Another historic moment occurred when Colorado earned victories against both UCLA and USC in the same weekend at the CU Events Center. Prior to that, the Buffs had never defeated both LA schools on their home floor in a single weekend.

During the banquet, the team handed out a number of volleyball and team awards.

Volleyball Awards:

Lexi Hadrych was honored with the Offensive MVP award. She led the team in kills per set throughout the season with 3.25. She notched 361 total kills throughout the season for a .242 attack percentage, and the outside hitter had three matches where she earned at least 20 kills. Hadrych also finished 15th in the Pac-12 for kills per set and was named as an All-Pac-12 honorable mention for the first time in her career.

Meegan Hart earned the Defensive MVP award by being a crucial first line of defense for the Buffs all season long. She averaged 1.21 blocks per set, ranking her at fourth in the Pac-12 and 57th in the NCAA. The middle blocker earned 138 total blocks during the season, finishing second in conference and 49th in NCAA rankings. This season, Hart was granted first team All-Pac-12 honors, selected for the First-Team Pacific South All-Region by the AVCA, voted an All-American by VolleyMag, and was chosen as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week twice. The grad student finished her MS Organization Leadership degree in December.

Kelley Levaggi was chosen as the Scout Team MVP. The award is given to a versatile player who helps to prepare the starters for the different kinds of opponents they're going to face each week. The right side set a career high in kills on senior day against Utah, earning seven. Levaggi graduated in December with a major in Psychology.

Savannah Perry earned the Heart of the Buff award by displaying the ideals and core values that are established in the volleyball program on a day-to-day basis. The defensive specialist earned 133 total digs this season, with a season high 13 digs taking place in a five-set thriller against Oregon. Off the court, Perry is one of eight recipients for the Student Leader of the Year Award. The senior graduated in December with a major in Integrative Physiology.

Team Awards

In addition to honoring individual players' success on the court, the program also recognized student athletes' performance in the classroom. Perry was recognized as the Academic Student-Athlete of the Month in October and Emma DeSensi claimed the award in January.

Senior Speeches

Last, but by no means least, each graduating senior had an opportunity to talk about the program and their teammates. In their speeches, the seniors touched on how they felt extremely at home in CU's volleyball program and how their teammates aren't just teammates; they're lifelong friends. The seniors also thanked all of the coaches and support staff who made the 2022 season a major success, in addition to expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to play at Colorado.

A good-size incoming freshman class, along with a grad transfer at probably the main position of need, hopefully helps lead the team to a strong 2023 season!
(As I've noted a couple other places in Allbuffs, but not in this thread, grad transfer Howard and freshmen Jordan and Bolles are already in Boulder in class and practicing with the team, so hopefully will be even more ready and able to contribute if called upon next fall.)

All the best to Jill. We are going to miss the seniors from this past season.
I second that. Impressed by the leadership on that team. Seemed like a selfless bunch that had great chemistry. What are our prospects for next season? Who do you think will step up?

Best wishes to the 3 Buffs heading down to the Springs for the tryouts starting tomorrow. (Don't know if it means much if anything, but Sydney Jordan is the 1st Buff I can remember going to this National Team Program who, as an early forsh arrival this January, hasn't played a point for the Buffs.) -

BOULDER – The Colorado women's volleyball team has selected Lexi Hadrych, Morgan Riddle, and Sydney Jordan to attend the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this Friday through Sunday for the 2023 USAVB Women's National Team Open Program.

"I'm really excited for Lexi, Syd, and Mo to go down to the springs," head coach Jesse Mahoney commented. "We always send a group down to the open tryouts, and they've always had a good experience measuring themselves against some of the best players in the country.

Hadrych, Riddle, and Jordan will compete with hundreds of athletes from across the country for a chance to make it onto the USA's Women's National Team or the Women's Collegiate National Team.

Hadrych, a pin hitter who transferred to Colorado from UCLA at the beginning of the 2022 season, proved to be an offensive powerhouse for the Buffs. She was second on the team in kills with 361 and averaged a .242 attack percentage.

"I'm excited. I did it once my freshman year and I had a good experience," Hadrych commented. "I had shoulder pain the first time I went and had to sit out some, so I'm glad that my shoulder is good now and I'll be able to participate in each day."

Riddle, a junior libero from Parker, Colo., played in eight sets for the Buffs during the 2022 campaign and recorded eight digs.

"I think it's a great opportunity," Riddle said. "Schools from all around the country fly in to play, so it's kind of amazing that we only have to drive two hours. I'm really excited to learn a little bit and play over the weekend. It should be fun.

Jordan is a first year student who got a jump start on her college volleyball career by enrolling at CU after graduating from Ridge Point High School in December.

"I'm just excited to compete and continue to work on the things I'm working on at [spring practice]," Jordan said.

Registration for the program was only open to current and recently graduated college-age athletes born in the years 1998-2004. Players discover if they are selected for a team several weeks after the camp concludes.

Article after Saturday's scrimmage, concentrating on the 3 newest arrivals.

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2023/3/14/volleyball-new-buffs-excel-in-first-spring-scrimmage.aspx

"
BOULDER - The Colorado women's volleyball team played Air Force in their first spring scrimmage of the year at the CU Events Center Saturday morning.

The two squads started the day by competing against one another in various "mini-game" drills before playing three sets to 25 points.

"The most important thing we got out of today was playing somebody else," head coach Jesse Mahoney commented. "It's a little bit of a new environment for us even though we played at home. We haven't had a whistle blow in a while, so creating some anxiety and pressure was good for us. Now we can manage that moving forward."

Colorado added three new Buffs at the beginning of the semester, including first years Sydney Jordan and Avery Bolles, along with graduate transfer Skyy Howard. The scrimmage gave them a chance to play in a CU jersey for the first time.

"It's been really cool to finally play in this gym in front of my family and in front of people," Jordan said. "I feel like it was a really good learning experience as a team.

The outside hitter from Houston, Texas also commented that the spring game gave her a chance to showcase what she's been working on for the last two months.

"I'm trying to hit the way that they've taught me to hit. They've kind of reformed my arm swing and I'm trying to use that," Jordan said.

For Bolles, a libero from Andover, Minn., the scrimmage allowed her to get some nerves out of her system and grow more comfortable playing with the people around her.

"[Playing] felt great, but I was really nervous," Bolles said. "Once I got on the court though, the whole team supported me. In practice, I've been working a lot on changing my form by having my arms angle away from my body and not swinging as I pass. I think that transferred pretty well to today. I didn't get aced at all, so I was happy about that."

Howard, a graduate transfer from the University of North Carolina, said she felt a sense of ease with the team already.

"It felt great and I'm so excited. I already feel like I've been here for years," the middle blocker commented. "I think I started off a little rough [today]. I was hitting low on the net a little bit, but I definitely got more comfortable and started swinging how I'm supposed to."

"I thought all three players did a really nice job," Mahoney said. "With Skyy, you can certainly see what she's capable of physically. Then [Sydney] and [Avery] both played well today. They're still getting comfortable in their surroundings, but they've got a ton of potential."

The Buffs' next spring scrimmage takes place in Fort Collins, Colo. against Colorado State University on April 8th.

Was curious to see if CSU had anything on Saturday's scrimmage since cubuffs.com didn't.

The official CSU website also didn't have anything, but their student newspaper does have an article at https://collegian.com/articles/spor...owcases-new-talent-in-first-home-spring-game/ .

Looks like some potential bad news, as it says "The fifth set ended in a tie after a player from CU went down with an injury and had to be carried off the court.".

Hope it turns out the injury is minor to whomever was hurt, and they recover in a complete and timely way, with minimum pain and inconvenience.

read the article from the CSU student. Saw a highlight video from CSU that had the scoreboard on it. The sets were tied up at 2 and if they did not finish the 5th set due to the injury. How do you win 3 of the first 5 sets

From the below, a little more info on Saturday's schedule - 10:00 AM is a scrimmage vs. the alumni, with the match vs. UNC scheduled for 11:00 AM.

Preview for Saturday's scrimmages, the last of the spring season, (including parking info on what will be a VERY busy day on campus). -

Note that it sounds like the actual scrimmage against Northern Colorado is scheduled to begin around 11:30 AM, with the scrimmage against the alumni still scheduled for 10:00 AM.
