Matchup Preview

Hope you don’t have work tomorrow because the #20 ranked Buffs are kicking off their Pac-12 tournament run against Oregon State in the middle of the night. While the Buffs anxiously awaited news of their first opponent, Oregon State took care of business last night against a strong USC squad. The Trojans had the Buffs number in Boulder earlier this year, cruising to a 17-point road victory, meaning that the Buffs have a more favorable matchup against Oregon State. Despite beating them by 19 on the road, Colorado can ill afford to overlook this matchup. The postseason is all about who gets hot and when, especially when factors such as the neutral site are accounted for.

At face value, being an 11 seed isn’t overly intimidating, but the Beavers made quick work of a strong USC team and have strung together some solid efforts of late. The Buffs are going to have a tough time putting them away as they have shown a lot of resilience and fight. The Beavers found themselves trailing late against USC and battled back to close the game on a 21-6 run. They know how to hang with most teams and, despite what the record column might say, a lot of their games came down to the wire. It has only been a month since these two teams met in Boulder, but this time Oregon State is much more energetic and focused.

The Buffs have all the key pieces to take care of the Beavers and have shown they can hang with the best of the best. The Buffs need to kill any Oregon State momentum by setting the tone early with their signature lockdown defense. When the Beavers came to Boulder a month ago, the black and gold stampeded out of the gates and held firm the rest of the game. Grabbing momentum early is key, especially due to Oregon State’s recent success, as a repeat of February 2nd would be in the Buffs' best interest.

The Buffs need a consistent effort from the whole team in order to win. Center Quay Miller and guard Jaylyn Sherrod will have big games, coming off of receiving All-Pac-12 honors, as their seasoned resumes come in handy during March. Outside of these two consistent contributors, seeing who steps up in the big moments down the stretch will be fun.

If the Buffs win tonight, they will face the winner of Washington State and Utah tomorrow night at… 9:30 pm 😐

Pac-12 Network always makes it tough but tune in if you can and support the ladies as they start their journey for #1!
