Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread

The reports of SS not doing well in the interviews surprised me.

I got the impression that HCDS has been very focused and supportive of getting his kids into the NFL. They certainly have the resources, so it's curious that he wouldn't have had all the coaching possible to prepare for those interviews.

... You can nitpick every QB in this draft but this seems personal.
The idea that 30 NFL GMs would intentionally make a draft decision detrimental to their teams over something personal seems incredible.

Colin Kaepernick says hi.

...
I know the popular narrative is that every NFL team colluded to blacklist CK due to racism, and that's certainly possible. I also think it's fair to question if his bad season followed by 3 knee surgeries was a factor. I'm guessing those GMs had more access to the medical reports than the public.

I think rascism is real and affects many things in the news. I don't think there's reason to conclude rascism is the driving factor in either of these cases. I do understand it's tempting to go there when we're talking about a black person being perceived as not being treated fairly.

IMO here are the reasons that Shedeur fell in the draft:
  • Holds the ball too long,
  • Takes too many bad sacks,
  • Not particularly elusive, or great running the ball.
I'm guessing Shedeur is either going to be an absolute bust or an absolute stud in the NFL. Nobody has seen him behind an NFL OL, so it is really hard to tell. However, if some of the issues (above) are on him, and not a below average OL (or WRs not being able to separate off the line), he is really going to struggle in the NFL since he's never going to escape NFL defensive pressure.

I'd also agree with Medford's comments that Shedeur is generally unliked outside of the Colorado fan base. I'm not even sure how that is a controversial statement here. Fair or not, outside of my friends who are Colorado football fans, I don't know a single person who has anything good to say about Shedeur. My guess is that there are few NFL GMs or scouts that are going to put their job on the line to take a chance on a guy who is probably disliked by their team's fan base, and has some question marks about his game.

He'll likely go to a crappy team in the 2nd round. There won't be any pressure to start the guy on day 1, and everyone can take a deep breath and let his career play out the way it's going to play out.

This will certainly be an interesting thread to reflect back on in a few years.
He is Geno Smith.

Dude.

Dude, if I believed the entire NFL was colluding to promote a racist agenda, I wouldn't watch or follow that league anymore.
The entire league was colluding to keep out the man who started the kneeling trend that offended a very large chunk of the NFL’s core fanbase. Whether you think those actions were rooted in racism is up to you.

The people you’re referring to who don’t like him are fans who don’t know him and have never spoken to him. Every media member who has spent time with him, whether local or national, have had nothing but positive things to say. One anonymous source comes out saying things that come off so personally that they sound like a CSU or Nebraska fan talking **** and that means he’s generally unlikable?
We all form opinions about people who are in the public eye that we've never met and have never spoken to. I mean, I ****ing HATED Johnny Manziel. I thought he was cocky, brash, and an overrated douche bag. I wasn't alone. Lots of people hated that guy. While Shedeur and Johnny as QBs don't have anything in common, there are a lot of people that see their confidence as arrogance (e.g. "money fingers" vs "Rolex arm") which turns them off, especially if you're not absolutely blowing the doors off of every opponent you face. Johnny had other issues that made him even more unlikeable, but I think you get the point.

I personally don't have an issue with Shedeur's confidence. By all accounts he is a great teammate, hard worker, smart, and stays out of trouble. But there is a giant group of people (NFL fans) that are actively cheering against him, and that was true before the one anonymous source said bad things about him in the pre-draft interviews. I mean we all remember the posts here in 2023 about how much we loved all the Colorado Haters, yeah?

I understand that a lot of people who don’t know him and have never spoken to him have an opinion about him and how he comes across. My point is that anyone who knows him and has spent time around him have nothing but good things to say.

Personally I just think it’s more about the spotlight and media circus that comes along with him. He’s not a can’t miss pick and he comes with a lot of pomp and circumstance that most NFL GMs and HCs probably don’t want to roll the dice on.

Shedeur is our guy. He's a buff. He's a good teammate and broke his ****ing back for our entertainment. If you don't like him, **** you
I like him. Sat behind him at a BB game. Personable. Funny.

I also see faults in his game and why GMs may be wary of some of his personality and his daddy.

Some may be waiting on next year’s class.

Overheard 2 women in my office this morning talking about Shedeur - and they're not even sports fans. However, they had strong opinions that he didn't get picked because he's way too arrogant just like his dad. That's the narrative.
Indeed it is. It’s part of the narrative. Not all, but certainly part.

SS stayed true to himself. Rolled the dice on his style, bravado, and QB coach. Ward stayed pretty quiet and went #1. Feels like the league does not want brash rookies right now. SS either focuses on proving them all wrong or it eats him up

Not at all surprised that would be the main street narrative. Conversely, I think most Colorado fans would say that he probably didn't go in the first because he holds the ball too long and isn't elusive.

The good news is that 1) he doesn't need first round money, and 2) he'll have every opportunity to prove the haters wrong (or right).

This thread has turned to racism. Are some saying it plays a part in 2’s fall? I don’t think it has. I could be wrong.
I think its a hard argument to make with the Shedeur situation when the first overall pick was a black QB.

Edit: But it is clear that there is a huge pile of racists that have a specific issue with a brash, confident black QB like Shedeur. I don't think that's a surprise

I mean, it is also a tough draft year with so many teams picking a first round QB last draft.

But I'm not worried - I've seen what he does and I'm sure that S2 is going to be just fine, and some team will be very happy to have him

I have a hard time thinking that black QBs might be downgraded on race when both starting QBs in the last SB were black, the #1 overall pick the past 2 years was a black QB, and last year's ROY was a black QB. There are likely cases of racist individuals in NFL front offices who have prejudices about black folks and had Shedeur's personality hit a bunch of their trigger points, but the argument is thin that him being passed on in the 1st round by every team was racially motivated.

Last year was a good class. This is a weak QB class. Next year will be better.

He (and Prime) also brought in a ton of fans from the HBCU world. So my point with the meme yesterday wasn't so much about a particular political group, but about the tendency of mediocre white men to reflexively hate Shedeur in the same way they reflexively (and conversely) loved Jim McMahon, Ric Flair, John Daly. There's definitely a theme there & it's not political per se.
Can I love Shedeur and the other 3?
