Thought I'd add this tidbit to his profile.

He just played on the State Championship RUGBY team for East.

I think this is Lex (in red far right) in an East game against the Glendale Raptors this spring.

Scout has Lexington at OG. Rivals has him at DE, and ESPN has him at OC.

ESPN just recently posted his eval. Here it is.
Smith has the size we like to see for the center position at the major level of competition. However his and his athleticism, explosion and playing strength must improve for him to succeed at the next level of play. Appears to have some stiffness in his hips and not explosive snapping and stepping; his pad level is too high and he is unable to get movement when single blocking, will need help with strong nose tackles; will have problems blocking quick 1st and 2nd level defenders. When asked to pull / trap or pass protect his athletic limitations will need to be assessed. At times this player will show a tough aggressive attitude however overall playing strength and athletic quickness must improve if he is to successfully compete at the next level of play. Smith does not project high at the major level of competition. With time and a red shirt year his physical and athletic skills could be improved upon, allowing him to compete for a starting position at a lower level of competition.

The latter part of that quote makes him sound like a throwback to the Barnett era skill wise.

Are we sure we need this caliber of player?

Of course most don't seem to take in stock in the experts evaluations and maybe he has a big heart that will make up for his lack of ability.

Me, I'd take a pass on him for now.

We know Lex was ranked #2 at CU's camp.

I don't know that I put that much weight on some ESPN guy watching three or four plays from a highlight reel. I'm not going to agree or disagree with them, just saying I don't know that their evaluations are all that helpful. As Dave Plati said once, it can be some guy in his pajamas sitting around his parent's basement. There aren't any credentials given to tell us if the person who is evaluating knows what he is doing.

The big issue here for me is are these flaws correctable? Playing stiff is something I'm sure the staff can correct. But Lungbill seems convinced that Lexington just doesn't have the talent to play in the Big 12. I'm not a coach so I'm really not sure. But ESPN definitely isn't the last word when it comes to recruiting.

Everyone I've talked to (online or IRL) that follows Colorado high school football has said that Lex Smith is a player. Add in that he performed very well at the CU camp this summer and that Denver East has been putting out some good players for us. I think we find a scholarship for Lex, and he ends up being a good player at CU.

As far as position, reports are that he's been focusing on cutting bad weight so he can bulk back up with good weight. I think he's eventually a DT for the Buffs (though he could be a strongside/34 DE).

The CU coaches have seen him in person, and maybe they'll follow his senior year. They should have a good idea at that point if he's the guy.

I have seen a lot of East games when he was playing, but unless you are there to watch a specific player, it's hard at this point to recall one guy. Hildreth, Thornton and Jeff Hampton/Matt Judish (now @ CSU Pueblo) stood out, for example, during plays. And Michael Waddy and Lex Smith were notable for their size alone, but I can't give any insight on what kind of player Lex really is.

Sure, I see what you guys are saying.
I just thought I'd be the foil here on this kid.

I'm not really all that enamored with him as a top choice for next years class and I'd hate to see us start to settle for less automatically because Hawkins hasn't had much proof in the pudding yet. I want Hawkins to shoot for the moon wherever possible and practical.

I agree. If Collins wants to run the 3-4, he needs a big DT to clog up the middle of the line. Lexington seems like a project, but do we have time for one?

It seems weird to say, but we absolutely have time for projects at DT. Guys like Lex (and Sealii Epenesa or Foi Foi from Hawaii) would have time to develop at CU. With Nuckols greyshirting, our 2010 DT depth chart looks like this:

Seniors - Eric Lawson
Juinors - Eugene Goree; Curtis Cunningham
Sophomores - Will Pericak; Nate Bonsu
Freshmen - Ed Nuckols + 2010 recruits

Barring attrition, no one we're bringing in at DT for this class has to be ready for a significant number of snaps until his RS Sophomore year. You'd definitely like to find guys who are ready to compete from day one, but with the new depth at CU it's not the end of the world if we bring in hard working, high character, good athletes that we need to develop for a couple/few years.
