Starting QB?

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and since the poll of the day is somewhat relivant I'd like to know what everyone else thinks.

Assuming that the starting QB has truely not been decided and Tyler and Cody are close to equal, who should start?

My gut feeling is that, with our focus on the run and our inexpeience at WR, the QB should have the ability to be like a 3rd RB when called on. I am not a fan of playing 2 QBs and I believe the starter needs to be able to both throw a decent ball and be able to run if the defence does not respect that option. I'm not saying we should go back to the option (although I do miss it), I just think with the new running attack our QB should be dangerous as well.

Hansen showed last year he has that ability and he should know the passing game well enough by now to take advantage of that, so thats my pick (i know I have no real word but...). what about everyone else?

Just my personal observations from the couple practices I saw, but Cody is the better QB. We need him to take the next step up.
 
After going to the few practices I went to, I think Cody should start. I really like Hansen though and I believe he has more upside. But Cody is more accurate and doesn't get happy feet as easily.

But If I really had my way I would run the flex-bone with Hansen at QB, Sumler at FB and Scott and Speedy at the wings.

:stupid: Plz yes. Hansen needs to calm down, and this program doesn't have the time left in it right now to go through his growing pains.
 
Loblaw makes an excellent point. The shield makes the QB.

End of discussion as far as I'm concerned.
 
Recent reports have been that Hansen has really stepped up since practices closed. If the competition is near even, I'd much rather have Hansen at QB. Bigger guy, stronger arm, better runner. And it's not like he's got a low football IQ. He's a coach's son who was able to come in and produce as a true freshman last year. Plus, Cody's the perfect type of guy to have available to play in relief.

I won't be upset or worried if Cody keeps his job (I think he's a good QB), but if Tyler is able to beat him out I believe this team's potential elevates to another level.
 
Boy, I like CH's moxie, leadership, football knowledge and intangibles. And here it comes, BUT his production really began to taper off about halfway through '07. My theory has been that enough tape is out on him and DC's know they can crowd the box because CH isn't likely to beat them over the top. IMO, that is why Helfrich went shotgun dipsy-doodle last year. Theoretically, that O should have played to many of CH's strengths, (smarts and accuracy on the short to medium pass) but it lacked the one thing a spread really needs...a QB who is a threat to run.

CH will be the starter. I'm not saying the N word (nepotism, not the other one) but then again, I never played on any sports team where the coach's son wasn't the QB, pitcher, SS, point guard. TH will not only have to beat out CH, but really beat him out to be the man. JMO. That's a shame because TH has much more upside. Snowbunny is probably right though, DH won't take the risk growing pains will cost him a W this year with the natives as restless as they are....

A legit concern. I cannot get that '08 FSU game out of my head.:cry:

I also agree with Buffnik. If the coaches feel it is close, go with Hansen.
 
It will be Cody, and he will remind us more of his 3,000 freshman season instead of his 1,000 yard sophmore slump if our O-line and rushing attack is whats advertised.
 
Cody is a great kid, well versed in the offense, accurate and a leader. He is just not, physically, a div 1 qb. Everyone outside of Colorado recognizes that.

Hansen has more upside. Give him the ball.

No need. I can name the overthrow of Moyd against FSU right off the bat. He also missed a TE in the same game.

Yes. And how many were droppd the year before? He needs time to set his feet, agreed. But can't is far to strong. Plus, hansen is far less accurate

That was a great throw by CH, no doubt. When CH does go deep successfully, it is usually into man coverage, where the WR has beaten the coverage. Yes, I recognize WVU wasnot in man on that play. Perhaps you can dig it up since you are more facile at the internet than I, but go back and look at the KU game in '08. CH went deep on a sideline pattern late in the first. The FS came from the middle of the frickin' field and picked the ball at the sideline. Rainbows. Anything over 25 yards is a rainbow, just like the clip you found above. Remember the overthrows at FSU? CH has to heave it to get it deep, his accuracy suffers and zone coverage with quality safeties make for huge problems. He'll be the starter, and I believe he'll be reasonably successful as a game manager with a strong running game and lots of play action. It will be largely dink and dunk and that's OK. TH has a much more live arm IMO, as did Ballenger. It is CH's job to lose, so you don't need to break into tears just yet.

Hansen may be less accurate, but let's not pretend Cody's accuracy is anything to brag about:

Watch Pat White in that video and Tell me you wouldn't like to have that kind of threat from the QB position.

I like Cody, but MY idea of a college QB is a dual threat. If Cody has worked on that part of his game (and I think during the spring I read that he was working on it) great!!! but if Hansen can throw just as well and has a better running game, I would go with him. I know he has had tendency to rely on his feet but I'm sure he is getting better and when he does take off and gets good yardage more than not, who cares?

To be fair, Cody did have a lot of balls dropped in 2007 and last year he didn't have the time. I think a lot of people really forget what Cody did for us in 2007. He is not a bad QB, and he did lead us to wins over CSU, OU, TT and NU in '07. He also had one of his best games against NU last year, unfortunatly it was ruined by a tipped pass.

Cody's stat line from that game:

14 of 24 (58.3%), 249 yards, 1 td, 3 int, 8 rushes for -33 yards (long of 2).

That better be his worst game if he starts this year.

Hansen played under the same conditions last year (as a true freshman no less). People don't seem willing to give him the same pass that Cody gets for last season. A bit odd to me.

For some reason I thought he did better than that. Anywho, Cody has shown a lot more than Hansen. The only thing I trust in Hansen is his runnign ability. His decision making and accuracy are worse than Cody's.
