Ralphie Report: Buffaloes lose to BYU, fall to 0-7 in Big 12 play

NCAA Basketball: Cincinnati at Colorado

Colorado can’t wake up from their current nightmare.

Every time the Colorado Buffaloes have taken the court during Big 12 play, it’s felt like Groundhog Day. Turnovers, bad shooting, and poor execution have doomed CU for a seventh consecutive game, this time in an ugly 83-67 loss to the BYU Cougars.

The Buffs, now 0-7 in Big 12 play, are living through a nightmare that they seemingly can’t wake up from. Ranked 344 out of 364 Division I teams in turnovers per game ahead of Tuesday’s late-night matchup, Colorado didn’t do themselves any favors against the Cougs.

CU opened the game sloppily, turning the ball over seven times in the first 10 minutes. Thankfully, some stellar shooting helped the Buffs overcome their early mistakes. Colorado shot 11-15 from the floor to open the game, going bucket-for-bucket with BYU and keeping things competitive early.

When BYU’s offense started to sputter, Colorado put their foot on the gas. CU ripped off a 14-0 run, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Julian Hammond, to build their lead to 10 points with 5:44 to play in the first half.

Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end for the Buffaloes. CU would proceed to miss their next 16 shots from the floor, essentially handing the game to the Cougars. BYU coach Kevin Young's shifting from man-to-man to zone defense confused the Buffs, leading them to take ill-advised shots and dig themselves into a massive hole. By the end of Colorado’s cold streak, BYU had outscored CU 39-6.

That 39-6 run effectively ended the game with about 14 minutes to play in the second half. Colorado needed to find a way to string together some stops to even have a miracle of digging out of their 23-point deficit, which never happened. BYU hit 19 of their 28 FG attempts in the second half, including six of their 12 three-point attempts, to cruise to an easy 83-67 victory.

Turnovers once again played a large role in Colorado’s struggles, coughing the ball up 16 times against the Cougars. Although the Buffaloes were able to force 14 BYU turnovers of their own, their 0-16 shooting slump proved to be too much to overcome.

Colorado’s lax perimeter defense is another reason this game got out of hand so quickly. The Cougars shot 46% (11-24) from behind the arc, with six of those triples coming during the 39-6 run that doomed the Buffaloes.

BYU did throw Colorado one bone, being foul trouble. BYU racked up 22 total fouls against the Buffaloes, but Colorado could not capitalize, as none of BYU’s players fouled out and CU only shot 66.7% (18-27) from the line.

Julian Hammond once again led Colorado in scoring, tallying 17 points on Tuesday night. Trevor Baskin came off the bench and proved to be a force off the boards, racking up a team-high six rebounds.

With their 0-7 streak to start conference play, this stretch ties for the longest losing streak in Tad Boyle’s 15 seasons coaching the Buffaloes. It doesn’t get any easier from here either, as the Buffs have to travel to Tucson for a road matchup with the red-hot Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, who are 6-1 in Big 12 play.

Ralphie Report: CFP Update: Buckeyes beat Notre Dame for the National Championship

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 20 CFP National Championship - Notre Dame vs Ohio State

A look at the conclusion to the CFP

The National Championship for the 2024 season wasn’t expected to be particularly close. The Ohio State Buckeyes entered the game as seven-point favorites. Early on, they showed exactly why. With playmakers at every position on both sides of the ball, the Buckeyes consistently found ways to involve their key contributors and dominate the game.

OSU started out hot. They scored repeatedly and quickly, building a commanding 28-7 lead early in the second half. At that point, everything seemed to be spiraling out of control for the Fighting Irish. However, Notre Dame found ways to claw back into the game, limiting the Buckeyes to field goals and scoring critical touchdowns of their own. The Irish managed two touchdowns in the second half, converting two-point conversions on both, which pulled them within a single score in the fourth quarter. For the first time all night, the game felt competitive.

Despite the momentum shift, Ohio State ultimately slammed the door on Notre Dame’s comeback hopes. A late Buckeye field goal in the fourth quarter put the game just out of reach, securing their victory. The final score was 34-23, and Ohio State celebrated their first national championship in a decade.

Key Players

Will Howard: The Buckeye quarterback capped off an outstanding playoff run with a poised performance in the biggest game of his career. Howard completed 17 of 21 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t try to play hero ball and avoided turnovers, effectively managing the offense and solidifying his draft stock.

Quinshon Judkins: Judkins made a strong case for NFL scouts to take notice. While he didn’t see heavy usage in this game, he made the most of his 13 touches, racking up 121 yards and two crucial touchdowns. His ability to break open big plays was instrumental in Ohio State’s victory.

Here’s a look at his biggest run of the night, a 70-yard house call that put Ohio State up 28 to 7:

Jeremiah Smith: The true freshman receiver has already established himself as one of the top wideouts in college football and made an early case as a Heisman front-runner for next season. After a quiet performance in the semi-final, Smith bounced back in a big way. He tallied 88 receiving yards, a touchdown and further cemented his reputation as Ohio State’s premier deep-ball threat.

Ralphie Report: Colorado ranked #25 in season’s final AP Poll

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 28 Valero Alamo Bowl - BYU vs Colorado

The Buffs managed to squeak into the final poll of the 2024-25 season

The voters have spoken. The Colorado Buffaloes are officially among the nation’s top teams for the 2024-25 college football season.

After a 9-4 finish to Deion Sanders’ sophomore season in Boulder, the Buffs managed to barely squeak into the final AP Poll of the season, ranking as the 25th-best team in the nation.

Colorado fell five spots in the poll from 20th to 25th after their blowout loss in the Alamo Bowl to BYU, but that wasn’t enough to knock them outside of the AP Poll. CU beat out teams like Navy, LSU and Louisville for the final spot on college football’s most prestigious poll.

Yes, CU’s season ended unceremoniously, but that doesn’t take away how good the Buffs were in 2024. After going 4-8 in 2023 and 1-11 in 2022, Sanders and company dragged CU back to relevance for their on-field performance in one year alone, crushing most of their Big 12 competition and bringing a Heisman Trophy back to Boulder.

This is now only the second time in the last 22 years that Colorado finished the season ranked, with the last time being in 2016 when the Buffs finished ranked 17th. Thanks to the efforts of players like Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig and many more, the foundation has been laid in Boulder, and now it’s time to build upon it.
