Ralphie Report: Colorado Buffaloes unveil Wall of Honor for men’s basketball

NCAA Basketball: Nebraska at Colorado

CU will commemorate the greatest players in program history.

The Colorado Buffaloes have seen better days on the basketball court, and that’s why they’re choosing to look back instead of forward the rest of the season.

The Buffs will soon unveil a Wall of Honor at the CU Events Center. There will be displayed the names and numbers of the greatest players in program history.

Those players are:

Chauncey Billups (1995-97)
Alec Burks (2009-11)
Jim Davis (1961-64)
Spencer Dinwiddie (2011-14)
Burdette “Burdie” Haldorson (1951-55)
Jay Humphries (1980-84)
Cliff Meely (1968-71)
Andre Roberson (2010-13)
Scott Wedman (1971-74)
Derrick White (2016-17)

Those names include NBA Champions, Olympic gold medalists, All-Stars, Players of the Year, and a whole list of all-conference selections and accolades of the sort. They’re legends of the game, at least in Boulder, and every one deserves their one write-up when their number is revealed. (Stay tuned.)

The first to be honored will be Haldorson, Meely and Davis during the Buffs’ January 28th home game against Arizona State. After that, Humphries has his own ceremony on February 8th when the Buffs play the #7 Houston Cougars. The rest at TBD.

Ralphie Report: Source: Cowboys looking elsewhere from Deion Sanders

Oklahoma State v Colorado

Jerry Jones is zeroing in on another candidate.

Colorado fans can now breathe a collective sigh of relief.

After multiple weeks of flirting between Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, it looks as though Coach Prime will not be the next head coach of America’s Team.

According to reports, Jones is now expected to hire Brian Schottenheimer, the current Cowboys offensive coordinator and son of legendary NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, as the team’s next head coach. The deal is reportedly expected to be finalized as soon as Thursday evening.

Why should this matter to you as a Colorado fan? First and foremost, that means the flirting between Jones and Sanders should come to an end.

Reports came out in early January that Jones’ ideal candidate for the head coaching job of the Cowboys was Sanders, and Sanders didn’t shy away from the rumors.

“To hear from Jerry [Jones] is delightful and intriguing,” Sanders told NFL reporter Adam Schefter in a statement. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing.”

Sanders ended the statement by reiterating his support for Boulder, saying he loves where he is at with the Buffaloes.

“But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community,” Sanders told Schefter.

With Jones and the Cowboys looking elsewhere, it seems extremely unlikely that Sanders will head to the NFL for the 2025-26 season. Anything is possible, but it looks like Coach Prime is here to stay in Boulder.

Ralphie Report: Q&A: Colorado heads to Tucson to face the Wildcats

NCAA Basketball: Colorado at Arizona

Zachary BonDurant-USA TODAY Sports

We teamed up with our Arizona Wildcats sister blog to answer your most pressing questions

Things are not going super great for the Colorado Buffaloes.

Bad news: CU is 0-7 in Big 12 play, cannot stop turning the ball over, and can’t find a way to stop the bleeding.

Even more bad news: The Buffs’ next game will be at McKale Arena in Tucson to face off against the Arizona Wildcats, where the Buffaloes have never *officially* won a game. (Sabatino Chen got the shot off)

There is no good news, sorry.

To help preview CU’s upcoming game in the desert, we teamed up with our friends at Arizona Desert Swarm, our U of A sister site at SB Nation.

The lovely folks at AZ Desert Swarm asked us their most pressing questions about the matchup with the ‘Cats and what’s gone wrong for the Buffs this season, and Sam Metivier, our resident Colorado basketball expert and historian, is here to answer them all!

Be here to check out the Q&A HERE and keep up with Ralphie Report for more Colorado hoops content.

Ralphie Report: Buffaloes lose to BYU, fall to 0-7 in Big 12 play

NCAA Basketball: Cincinnati at Colorado

Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

Colorado can’t wake up from their current nightmare.

Every time the Colorado Buffaloes have taken the court during Big 12 play, it’s felt like Groundhog Day. Turnovers, bad shooting, and poor execution have doomed CU for a seventh consecutive game, this time in an ugly 83-67 loss to the BYU Cougars.

The Buffs, now 0-7 in Big 12 play, are living through a nightmare that they seemingly can’t wake up from. Ranked 344 out of 364 Division I teams in turnovers per game ahead of Tuesday’s late-night matchup, Colorado didn’t do themselves any favors against the Cougs.

CU opened the game sloppily, turning the ball over seven times in the first 10 minutes. Thankfully, some stellar shooting helped the Buffs overcome their early mistakes. Colorado shot 11-15 from the floor to open the game, going bucket-for-bucket with BYU and keeping things competitive early.

When BYU’s offense started to sputter, Colorado put their foot on the gas. CU ripped off a 14-0 run, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Julian Hammond, to build their lead to 10 points with 5:44 to play in the first half.

Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end for the Buffaloes. CU would proceed to miss their next 16 shots from the floor, essentially handing the game to the Cougars. BYU coach Kevin Young's shifting from man-to-man to zone defense confused the Buffs, leading them to take ill-advised shots and dig themselves into a massive hole. By the end of Colorado’s cold streak, BYU had outscored CU 39-6.

That 39-6 run effectively ended the game with about 14 minutes to play in the second half. Colorado needed to find a way to string together some stops to even have a miracle of digging out of their 23-point deficit, which never happened. BYU hit 19 of their 28 FG attempts in the second half, including six of their 12 three-point attempts, to cruise to an easy 83-67 victory.

Turnovers once again played a large role in Colorado’s struggles, coughing the ball up 16 times against the Cougars. Although the Buffaloes were able to force 14 BYU turnovers of their own, their 0-16 shooting slump proved to be too much to overcome.

Colorado’s lax perimeter defense is another reason this game got out of hand so quickly. The Cougars shot 46% (11-24) from behind the arc, with six of those triples coming during the 39-6 run that doomed the Buffaloes.

BYU did throw Colorado one bone, being foul trouble. BYU racked up 22 total fouls against the Buffaloes, but Colorado could not capitalize, as none of BYU’s players fouled out and CU only shot 66.7% (18-27) from the line.

Julian Hammond once again led Colorado in scoring, tallying 17 points on Tuesday night. Trevor Baskin came off the bench and proved to be a force off the boards, racking up a team-high six rebounds.

With their 0-7 streak to start conference play, this stretch ties for the longest losing streak in Tad Boyle’s 15 seasons coaching the Buffaloes. It doesn’t get any easier from here either, as the Buffs have to travel to Tucson for a road matchup with the red-hot Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, who are 6-1 in Big 12 play.
